Buffer Overrun in Quicktime 7.1.3

I'll start with the basics:
System Config:
-Windows XP Pro SP2 (all updates performed)
-Intel p4 1.7GHz
-1GB RAM
-2x120GB 7200RMP UltraQuiet HDDs
-Nvidia GeForce 6200 128MB AGP (latest Forceware Release)
-SoundBlaster Audigy 2 (latest driver/firmware release)
-HP DVD 840i DVD +/-R,RW Lightscribe Drive
-Netgear Wireless 54g PCI
-USB 2.0 PCI Adapter Card
I have this connected to my home theatre system for audio, and a UXGA Cable to my Samsung 46" DLP HDTV @ 1280x720.
After downloading and installing the updated versions of iTunes and Quicktime (I am using QuickTime Pro), my visualizations in iTunes no longer work, and I am unable to play the TV Episodes of Battlestar Galactica that I downloaded (and were the only reason I upgraded in the first place). Everytime I try to watch either of the episodes I downloaded (or anything in QuickTime), or run the visualizations when listening to music, the video (and visualization) is choppy, cannot be viewed at full screen, and my CPU Utilization spikes to 88% - 93% and I get a "buffer overrun" error message. I am still able to play regular DVD movies, and other .mv4 encoded movies (such as Nero Digital) without any issues at all. If I kill the QuickTime process, CPU utilization returns to normal.
I've tried uninstalling / reinstalling iTunes and QuickTime (separate installs) with no success.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this problem?
Also, on a side note, is there a way to configure QuickTime (or iTunes) to use only the SPDI/F output for Dolby Digital / DTS passthrough to an external encoder. I had to make that adjustment in winDVD for DVD Video playback, and I was wondering if the same is required in order to get 5.1 audio out of TV shows / Movies from iTunes.

  • Quicktime and itunes will not open - buffer overrun in quicktime

I cannot open Itunes. It says it needs quicktime. quicktime will not open. says buffer overrun. reinstalled both itunes and quicktime. both used to run prior to updates. Help.

Quicktime was working on my Vista computer up until a short time ago. I believe one of the Microsoft updates crippled it. I have looked at several forums and read the other threads on this site and from what others have described I really believe now that Microsoft did this with one of their updates. There are many problems with Vista all due to Microsoft trying to force developers to use only their products. Unfortunately they are squeezing us customers really hard.

  • Buffer overrun with quicktime player

    i'm going crazy!!!!!!
i keep getting a buffer overrun when i try to use quicktime player. i have spent the last week trying to figure it out and it's driving me crazy. i just bought my laptop and planned on updating my ipod. when i first got it itunes worked fine but now itunes stops before it starts and quicktime player has a buffer overrun. also in contol panel my quicktime player and itunes icon have a red box around it, is this something to do with why it's not working?
Somebody, anybody can you help me please?

I have the same problem myself. My mom got a new iTouch for her birthday and she gave me her old iPod. I havent been able to update either of them, my quicktime hasnt been working therefore my iTunes hasnt been working for the past 2 MONTHS!!!! Im over trying to fix it myself, spending hours for nothing. Im willing to pay someone to come over and fix it because this is beyond me

  • Buffer overrun in Quicktime

This is just bad programming and Apple should fix it.
No problems with Itunes or playing movies
    just when closing Quicktime.

I really don't know with certainty if it is a problem with QT or Microsoft.
With the first QT update, I'd get the same as you, buffer overrun detected which has corrupted the programs internal state. The second update QT 7.3.1.70 seemed to solve it for me, but I installed that last update a little differently.
What I did was install it to E:\ drive. In the past QT versions would only install to C:\ even if you tryed to install them to another drive, they would automatically go to C:\ my thought back then was QT needed to be installed to the drive the OS was on.
I do not have a OS installed to E:\ which on this computer is a separate HD and not a partition. But QT did install to it and works. So I really don't know what else to tell you. And I've not read any post in regard to the buffer overrun, that has explained it or offered a good solution.

  • Issue with running QuickTime Windows.  Buffer Overrun Error - C++ Library .

Initial problem was Buffer Overrun Error (C++ Library) when clicking on QuickTime after installation. IE. QT would not even open. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831875#appliesto
    I took these steps:
    1. Tried to uninstall QuickTime by itself (it failed).
    2.
    3. Manually deleted apple, itunes and quicktime from the entire system (where ever it let me).
    4.
    5. Manually took out from the registration the apple stuff.
    6.
    7. Left the items in the recycle bin (in case there were any real issues and I needed something restored).
    8.
    9. Performed a registration cure (RegCure).
    10.
    11. Took off my entire Anti Virus.
    12.
    13. Dropped down separately the QuickTime and separately the iTunes on desktop.
    14.
    15. Tried to install QuickTime from one of the two saved files on my desktop, but encountered a serious fault
    16.
    17. It needed the QuickTime Installer to remove QuickTime itself, else it crapped out and nothing happened. This complained for a QuickTime.msi file which was a problem.
    18.
    19. Went to the recycle bin and restored only components which were marked QuickTime Installer.
Removed the QuickTime instead of Repair.
Went to the website and Installed QuickTime 7 directly.
It opened on the desktop after installation.
Installed iTunes separately from the desktop and it opened directly.
    Rebooted my pc.
    Enabled all my Security (McAFee).
Opened one by one the QuickTime and Then the iTunes.
Created a computer restore point with a narrative for the future.
This was a very difficult task and required a lot of steps. I am glad you helped me with the removing part. Its great to have everything working again on my pc.
I hope this was helpful - it took me ageges to fix.

I'm experiencing exactly the same bug. Matter of fact, it's the first time in years that I've run across this kind of 'problem' when using non-beta software from a major player. Too bad. This really reflects poorly on Apple's credibility.

  • Quicktime Buffer overrun in WIndows XP!

    Hi.
I have a problem with Quicktime (7.3). When I try to run the program I have the following error message:
    +"Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Runtime Library+
    +Program C:\....\quicktimeplayer.exe+
+A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrpted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated"+
It happened suddenly without installing anything. I've tryed uninstalling and installing again but the error still showing.
iTunes doesn't run either. By the way, iTunes doesn't show any error message, it just doen't run.
    Any help will be welcome.
    Thanks!
P.S. My OS is WinXP, not crap Vista.

Here is a Macrumors article about Quicktime buffer overflows. The problem described may or may not be the one you are experiencing, and note the name of the site: MacRUMORS.

  • Quicktime 7.2 MS Visual C++ Runtime Library Error "Buffer Overrun Detected"

HIGHLY DISSATISFIED just shelled out the $30 for Quicktime PRO and I can't use it.
Please help when I attempt to run .mov files captured by my digital camera it begins to pixelate badly only a few seconds in and then stops completely and crashes giving me the error message "Buffer Overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programs internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated." The files play normally when other programs w/ .mov codecs installed are used such as Nero, WMP, etc. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate (64bit) with a 1.8 ghz AMD Turion processor, 2GB ram, NVidia graphics. I'm guessing some sort of issue with Windows Vista security and Apple's refusal to be compatible with it -- but I'm no expert.

I'm considering upgrading to Vista. I'd like to see at least an "I don't know why our product is working" response to this question, please.

  • Quicktime problem "buffer overrun detected!"???

sorry if thas has been posted a billion times recently, but i seriously am not that good with computers and can't seem to find a place for help with this. was hoping you guys here could at least point me in the right direction. Also, like i just said, I am not very handy when it comes to computers, so try to keep it plain and simple...
with that being said, I have encountered this problem with quicktime recently, which in turn has caused itunes to not work either. i've tried searching for a fix for days now and have been unsecessful finding anything so far. I heard it has something to do with the new quicktime update not cooperating with some service pack update... im not sure
I tried to delete quicktime but couldn't, now when i try to open quicktime... I get an error message reading :
    Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library
    Buffer overrun dtected!
    program C:\programfiles\quicktime\quicktimeplayer.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.
thanks for any help in advance
    vaio RA710g Windows ME
    sony RA710g Windows ME

I had the exact problem, after I tried updating to the latest version of itune. Now my itune don't work. There are no graphics and no sound. When I open Quicktime it has the exact message "buffer overrun detected...The program cannot safely continue execution and must be terminated."
I tried removing the quicktime program, restoring the computer to earlier dates, disabling my antivirus program first and downloading itunes on a disc and then updating the program. Nothing Works! I talked to a guy at apple support who said he's not allowed to help me since "quicktime is a free program" then referred me to article "302538" which says to disable some items using the System configuration Utility (msconfig) in windows XP. Tried it and it doesn't work either.
Since this problem is happening to so many people, something is obviously wrong with the itune and quicktime program which is mandatory for my recently purchased $300 Ipod. I've already wasted countless hours trying to resolve this problem with very little support from Apple. Apple needs to address and fix this problem.
Please let me know how to resolve this problem! Thank you!

If i click on the Apple Software Update shortcut the progam updates with no problem.

  • Quicktime buffer overrun error with windows

    Hi
I hope that some one out there can help me!!!! I have tried to install the new version of quicktime 7.4 but it won't install. And everytime that I try to open Quicktime player is gives me an error which reads:
    Buffer overrun detected!
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue exection and must now be terminated.
I have tried to uninstall quicktime and reinstall it several times. I have also used recure to try and fix it. If anyone has any more suggestion other than going to the geek squad I would really appreciate it. I have been trying to fix this for a while. Oh, I did try to go back in the recovery too and that didn't work either.
    Thank YOU

  • Quicktime 7.1 buffer overrun when trying to get info from an Indeo 4.4 AVI

Surprisingly Quicktime7.1 can play one of my Indeo video 4.4-encoded Windows .AVI File. It plays and exports flawlessly but when I want to use Get Info the player (or maybe one of the QuickTime DLLs) crashed with a VC++ Runtime Error: Buffer Overrun. All other QuickTime file don't have this problem.

This is what when the situation happens.

  • Quicktime 7.2 - Buffer overrun detected!

The quicktime player 7.2 often crashes down, when i play a quicktime panorama-movie. An error alert appears:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. Buffer overrun detected. Program: C:\Programme\Quicktime\QuicktimePlayer.exe. A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.
Firefox plugin falls exactly the same. With the last version 7.1.6.200 i had no problems like this one.
The panorama-movie can be viewed at:

  • QuickTime 7.2 Buffer Overrun

I am running Vista with all the latest updates on my Mac Book Pro. Recently i have been attempting to get Quicktime and iTunes up and running. iTunes was erroring immediately with the Vista error message stating that iTunes could not start. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling as well as blasting the registry and nothing was helping. So I started looking and found that part of the problem might be Quicktime. So I attempted to launch QT 7.2 on it's own. I was greeted with a buffer overrun error at program launch. Again I went through the process of multiple uninstall/reinstalls and clearing the registry. I still keep getting the same Buffer Overrun error.
    Any ideas out there?
