Buffer parameters

hi gurus
I installed ECC 60ssr2.after installation i configured post installations.next  what are the corresponding parameters we need to increase for buffer performance(sto2)  and workload statistics(sto3).
please send documentation of parameters values for following configuration
           version - ecc 6.0 ssr2
           database - db2 9.0
operating system - suse Linux 10.sp1
           system - I 86 machine
           Ram - 16GB

vasu

Hi Vasu,
Log a call to SAP for go live preparation check.
They will recommend you the parameters values depending upon your server configuration, number of users and the user activity.
I don't think so, some ready made documentation is available for tuning the buffers as per your requirement.
Thanks & Regards,
Nagendra.

  • Buffer Paramater Settings

    Hi Experts,
In our Development and Production systems , we have been Observed that ,
Lot of Swaps at Program Buffer (PXA) Especially Development systems ..
Some times we were experianced Lot of swaps  Export and Import Buffers also
When we saw at ST02 There was less Space at program buffer and export and Import Buffers .. , and also extended meory use is bit high ..
Could you please let me know that . If system is running with more swaps ( in St02) , How can we avoid this Swaps ?
Is there any formula to fine tune buffer parameters  like program buffer, table buffer , Export/Import ,Roll area,HeapMemory to make the system up and running  with good peformance ?
    and also Paging area .........?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Praveen.

    Hi,
Do you take any ofline backups of your developement system ??? if yes then is it weekly or monthly ????if it is weekly need not to worry as the buffer gets reset as system gets recycled.and if theres no offline backups then u need to monitor it atleast a month...then plan to tune the buffer.
Swaps is the number (counter) by which old  objects in the buffer is over written by the new objects from database .
i would suggest to monitor the swaps for a certain period

  • Control ALV: Problem with Fieldcat buffer

I have developed an ALV report using grid controls.
However when i change the fieldcatalog(moving coloumns order and so....) and run again i dont see the effect on the list. I tried logging off and in but still same problem. Also is passed below buffer parameters also.
What could be the issue with controls?
    Any hint/ideas greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • DAQmxWriteBinaryI16 only changes on half-buffer cycles

I need to dynamically change a portion of a continuously generated
waveform while it is being generated. I can do this by making a call
to DAQmxWriteBinaryI16 for example. I notice a half-buffer type of
behavior though. If I'm changing a part of the first half of the
waveform and the waveform is currently generating the first part, then
I do not observe that update until the next cycle of the waveform,
even if I write the new part before the waveform gets to it.
For example, the total waveform has 1000 points. I want to change
points 300 to 350. The waveform is currently at point 50. I make the
software call to change points 400-450 when the waveform is at point
    50. I do not see the changed points when it pas
    es through 300-350.
The waveform goes through 300 to 350 and generates the old existing
points, continues on to 1000, then regenerates again around to points
300-350. Then I see the new points. I am observing this on an
oscilloscope generating a ramp at slow rates.
If I make the change when the waveform is at point 400 or beyond, I
see the change take place on the next iteration around to 300-350.
Same thing happens trying to change a part of the second half-cycle.
The M Series Help > Analog Output > Analog Output Data Generation
Methods > Buffered > states : "Regeneration is the repetition of the
data that is already in the buffer. Standard regeneration is when data
from the PC buffer is continually downloaded to the FIFO to be written
out. New data can be written to the PC buffer at any time without
    disrupting the output."
From what I observe, while it can be written to the buffer at any
time, it does not actually change until the next half-buffer. I
recall the old NIDAQ had h
alf-buffer parameters. Is there any way
around this issue with DAQmx ?

You may want to check out this example.
I think it will do some of what you're wanting with updating values to the FIFO.

  • Swaps in Program Buffer

    Hi Gurus,
When should we tune buffer parameters?.
For example: Swaps for program buffer are 90,000. In which case we have to tune the program buffer?. I know there is no threshold or thumb rule for swaps in SAP system. What will be the base point to tune buffer parameters to reduce swaps?
    Thanks in advance

  • SAP 64bit Linux application server (Linux on Power) memory config issues

    Hello Everyone,
Let me give some background. I have been tasked with replacing our AIX6.1 SAP application server with new Linux on Power servers (SLES11SP3)
Our current production BW application servers (AIX) are running fine given their current setup. We are fine implementing the same size of the AIX systems on the new Linux systems, but we now have more room to grow in the fur, however when I tried to implement the Linux server using the same memory sizing I am getting runtime errors: "TSV_TNEW_PAGE_ALLOC_FAILED" with a specific user created program and process chain. The AIX servers do not run into this issue running the exact same program. When this process runs, it utilizes 3 BTC process for the program.
Using the note 941735, I have tried to correctly setup the system using STD memory implementation, however I have a feeling that I am missing something or setup something incorrectly which is causing the above issue. Looking in ST02 here is the SAP buffer parameters for two of the systems. Perhaps someone might notice something that I am not see or point me in the right direction. Please let me know if more parameters from the profile are needed. Thanks!

Yes sapconf has been installed. sapconf however only sets the kernel settings.
I was able to resolve the issue by having Zero Admin tool using 'es/implementation = map' and setting the PHYS_MEMSIZE to the desired amount. Then commenting out all the values that are defaulted in the 32bit version of the memory management guide for linux and let it size many of the values. Then I simply copied those from st02. I updated the profile with those values to override default for  'es/implementation = std' and commented out PHYS_MEMSIZE as it is not needed. In a nut shell, the following parameters were updated.
    es/implementation = std
    em/address_space_MB = 4096
    em/blocksize_KB = 4096
    em/initial_size_MB = 14320
    em/max_size_MB = 14326
    rdisp/PG_MAXFS = 131072
    rdisp/PG_SHM = 16384
    rdisp/ROLL_MAXFS = 131072
    rdisp/ROLL_SHM = 131072
    ztta/roll_area = 6500352
    ztta/roll_extension = 4000000000
    ztta/roll_extension_dia = 4000000000
    ztta/roll_extension_nondia = 4000000000
    ztta/roll_first = 1

  • Parameter Setting for Windows 64-Bit Windows (Zero Administration)

    Hi All,
I would like to know the advantages behind setting up parameters based on SNOTE 88416 & 1518419.
I will explain our current environment to make understand first. Kindly help us to provide the solution for each parameter to set in Default or Instance Profile accordingly.
We are using Windows 2008 R2 64-Bit with MS SQL Server 2008 in Cluster Mode.
We having 1 CI , 1 DB node, & 2 Dialog Nodes. In this dialog node we have created additionally 1 more dialog node also.
              1. Central Instances        -1 Server          128 GB RAM      Kernel 7.21_EXT_REL 401 Version
              2. Database Instance      -1 Server          128 GB RAM      Kernel 7.21_EXT_REL 401 Version
              3. Dialog Instances          -1 Server          128 GB RAM      Kernel 7.21_EXT_REL 401 Version
              4. 2 Dialog Instances.      -1 Server          128 GB RAM      Kernel 7.21_EXT_REL 401 Version
    Concerns:
        1. Whether we need to do fine tuning for parameters in 2 dialog node server, where we included additionally one more dialog node in that server recently.
( For Eg : em/initial_size_MB has been set 131008 value in 1 dialog node & 2 dialog node its has been set 61440 value )
Kindly suggest us whether we need to divide all parameters values for these 2 dialog nodes ?
        2.  As per SNOTE 88416 - Phys_Memsize scenario, kindly explain the same how to set in  default profile or instance profile. I have attached my calculation, please suggest the same.
It would be great if someone help us.
    Regards,
    Gopinath M.L

    Hi Sriram,
              Thanks for your reply.
    1. Each DI physical server level you have to define the memory parameters.
Yes, we have copied the entire parameters values as same as DI 1 & kept in DI 2.
My question is here, whether we need to share/divide all the parameters set accordingly in instance profile or not ??? If you require i can attach all parameters which has been set in DI 1 & DI 2.
    2. You have to define in the instance profile parameters and as per the SAP Note 88416 base reference of the initial memory and buffer parameters, in a month you have to review the memory parameters,
Please check the below link Memory parameters for SAP on 64 Bit Windows screenshot, which describes to add phys_memsize, need to understand how to add that parameter & calculation whether it should be in Default or Instance profile, where other parameters values will be calculated automatically.

  • Application timeouts w/ subnet devices using 2950 switching

I am having problems with process critical PC workstations that access other workstations and servers.
This consists of a standalone subnet network (static IP's) using a 2950 switch that is also part of a LAN domain.
It appears when there is a LAN issue my subnet workstations experiences problems trying to access it's dedicated servers that are wired all within the subnet 2950 switch.
Could this be that the 2950 switch is looking for the DCHP or domain controller, slowing down my standalone devices?

    No, it's not likely.
The only thing affected by DHCP or domain info would be for managemnt (like being able to telnet into the switch).
Switches see the frame, look at the MACs, and either forward or flood the frame. That's all they do (acting as yer basic plain ol' switch).
Other features, such as broadcast/storm control, bad media (cabling), excessive broadcasts (broadcasts are also propagated out all ports and consume considerable bandwidth everywhere), and other things, like QOS settings, buffer parameters, spanning tree can also have a serious negative impact on your throughput, including many disappearing frames.
SO ... let's start by taking a look at a Show Version, and (at least) a Show Run (sanitized, if necessary).
It would also help if you could describe the nature of the traffic that is being dropped / lost / filtered (i,e., database, large graphics files, multicast streaming, file transfers, etc.
What troubleshooting have you tried so far?
Did it ever work, worked ... but not very well, worked well until you updated the IOS ....
Have you checked your LAN for virus / worm / trojan traffic (getting back to huge broadcasts)?
Are you getting any media errors? (Show interface)
Do you run many-to-one, many-to-many, any trunks? any EtherChannel?
Are you getting any "Duplex Mismatch" errors?
Have you tried another switch (for diagnostics to rule out the workstations & media)?
This ought to be enough to get started. get it collected and post it, then we can take another shot at it.
    Good Luck
    Scott

    Hi,
you don't provide much info on what you did...how about posting your imp-commandline?
And, did you try to use the oerr facility? It says:
    # oerr imp 20
00020, 00000, "long column too large for column buffer size (%lu)"
// *Cause:  The column buffer is too small. This usually occurs when importing
    // LONG data.
// *Action: Increase the insert buffer size 10,000 bytes at a time (for
// example). Use this step-by-step approach
// because a buffer size that is too large may cause a similar
    // problem.
So, for a shot i the dark: take another try with suitable recordlength and buffer parameters.

  • ST02 Export/Import

    Hi
The system was in  ZERO ADMINISTRATION in st02 later for the performance issue we increased the buffer parameters like
    rsdb/ntab/entrycount 40000 KB
    rsdb/ntab/ftabsize   60000 KB
    rsdb/ntab/irbdsize   12000 kB
    abap/buffersize 750000 kB
    rsdb/cua/buffersize 6000  kB
    rsdb/obj/buffersize        12000 kB through rz10
after that in st02 its showing the Export/import twice times
    Export/import          85.03    12,000      5,012      44.43     2,000
    Export/import          85.03    12,000      5,012      44.43     2,000
free directory entries and % free directory's are showing zero
    regards

    hi manoj
As i previously increased the export/import in st02
my query is why its showing twice times in st02 like
hit ratio   allocated    free space     %free space      directory size entries
    Export/import          85.63 ;   12,000         5,147              45.63 ;                      2,000
    Export/import          85.63 ;   12,000         5,147              45.63 ;                      2,000
free directory entries and % free directory's are showing zero

  • Error 1097 after calling dll function which allocates memory inside

    Hello!
When a call one my functions in my dll from LabView, i get an error 1097. My function takes a few arguments and then allocates some memory for measurement.
It's not returning any pointers to that memory area, it is just allocates that memory for itself. I don't know what could be the problem, probably i am missing something.
    Could you help please?
    Best regards,
    Tamas
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Are you sure that the allocate function is the problem?
Error 1097 simply means something inside the external code wrote into memory locations that it was not meant to write. That is usually because of output buffer parameters that are not allocated (large enough) in LabVIEW when passed to the external code fucntion, so the function assuming it received a buffer of a certain size happily writes into that buffer but overwriting other information it should not have.
But that is by far not the only possibility to cause this error. A simple bug in the external code can cause the same problem when a pointer goes astray or such. The fact that you used that library elsewhere already without seeing any problem is unfortunately no guarantee that the function is not buggy. The LabVIEW exeception handling around the Call Library Node has gotten rather picky and can detect violations that do not have to cause visible problems at all. But the violations it detects are real violations so just silencing them is not a good idea, as they could cause all kinds of problems including overwriting vital data structures in your program that either cause a crash later on or simply wrong results in other parts of your program. Especially the last one is a total bummer to debug.
Without seeing much more of your code it is basically impossible to point out where the problem could lie. The particular Allocate function doesn't look like there is much that could be done wrong, but I would assume that you call several other functions too somewhere, which could cause the problem. If you can absolutely positively say that you never ever call any library function with a to short (or unallocated) buffer parameter, then you will have to take it up with the manufacturer of your lib, as it would seem very likely that there is some problem in there.
Also you pass a handle to the library function but your Allocate function does not have this as a parameter! Where does this handle come from? Are you sure you have allocated and prepared it properly before calling this function? A handle is quite often a pointer, although usually a so called opaque pointer meaning the user of the library does not and should not know anything about the structure this pointer points to. It is only known internal to the library.

  • Oracle VM performance issues on OVS 2.2 - java 64bit (jre 1.6) applications

In an effort to move to pvt cloud & thanks to Oracle's database licensing policy on vm's we have decided to use Oracle Virtual Server as the hypervisor, OEL5+ as the database OS, and 11GR2 Grid Single Node RAC with ASM as the database. Our application can be on RHEL5+ or OEL5+ doesnt matter.
Here is my configuration (at present all componets running on only 1 physical server) :
    1. OVS 2.2 on BL465G6 with 32G memory, primary storage repository is off fiber channel from a 3PAR array.
    2. 40G individual LUNs physical disks presented to all application servers (Now i was using shared virtual disks & image files with file: driver and then blktap driver, for both performance sucks with file:driver being worst). I have tried OEL5+ templates, with RHEL5+ para virtualized OS as the current one.
    3. On database side --> ASM disks are physical as well (just converted). Overall, the only filebased images off the repository is one of the middleware servers (MQ) , loadbalancer (Zeus) and Routing Software (Vyatta)
We are running a loadrunner test and here are the following results.
Perf App : physical linux box running appl
Perf DB : physical solaris box running db
Cloud App : RHEL5 paravirtualized vm on phy: disk
Cloud DB : Oracle 11GR2 1 node Rac , Grid Installation , ASM disks are physical , OCR/Vote disks are physical
Perf App with Perf DB     Cloud App with Perf DB     Cloud App with Cloud DB
    140.08s     219.432s     226.476s
Also, i have noticed during the test only 1 vCPU is utilized. remaining stay idle.
I have run several disk benchmarking tests to determine that phy: disk presented is the best option for reads and writes. I have also run tcpdump and removed the loadbalancer and routing software out of the equation by creating a flat single subnet network amongst the appl and dB (both running on the same physical server). Tcpdump shows not much fragmentation or re-transmission and shows a similar pattern what we would see in the physical environment. The application version/ java & jre version is same on both the vm and physical server. Only difference is dB (in physical world it runs on Solaris, here it is running on OEL vm)
Note : On the OEL templates NUMA was turned off. turning that ON yielded an overall performance gain of 30%. Now i need to fine tune further. So my questions based upon my observations are :
    1. vCPU calibration : Can i pin 1 physical CPU to 1 vCPU ? How does this scheduling happen or controlled.
    2. Why is only vCPU showing utilization while all others stay idle. I have 4 to 6 vCPUs per vm
    3. Any tuning to be done at the OVS layer?
    4. Any tuning to be done at the vm's. (Note in our physical environment, apart from hardening the OS and stripping off unnecesarry rpm's we do not modify the kernel neither do we modify any TCP and/or memory buffer parameters)
Oracle support is spending days trying to figure out my issue. I have uploaded OSWatcher data so many times. I need to escalate the case but i have always received better support & information, yet quick from the forum. Any pointers would be helpful.

    What are you missing?
I inherited this app and signing the third party jars is how it was setup, I was wondering the same thing too, why was it necessary to sign the third party jars?
The applet runs in either JRE 1.6.0_13 or JRE 1.6.0_27 depending on the other Java apps the user uses. JRE 1.6.0_13 does not have the mixed code security (so it is like is disable), but JRE 1.6.0_27 does have the mixed code security and the applet will not launch with mixed code security enable, so we have to disable it. With all the hacking going on in the last two years, is important to improve security; so this is a must.
Yes, I always clear up the cache.
Any idea on how to resolve this problem?

  • Datasocket and Shared Variables

I am curious if there is any advantage to using Datasocket to read/write shared variables (as opposed to a direct read/write).  I'm specifically talking networked shared variables here.
Is there any speed advantage to accessing shared variables thru the Datasocket functions?  Since both a direct read/write and a Datasocket PSP read/write talk to the same variable engine I assume they are equally efficient but I'm looking for confirmation here.  I've seen benchmarks for shared variable performance but none of them use DS/PSP to access the variables.
Normally I would not even think of using Datasocket to access shared var's but where I currently work we have a large app that does this and it works great.  I suspect that this functionality only exists in LV8.x for backward compatibility and non-Windows OS compatibility and is not really meant to be used for new, Windows-based apps?   Am I off base on this?
I am working in LV 8.5, BTW.....

    Hello Jared,
Thank you for the reply with clarification.
Based on your comment, I changed the buffer parameters and also tried the programs with two different data types, previously StringArray and now String.
In the attached LV8.6 project, you have all the programs, and shared variable library to review my tests.
There are two sets of two files - each set has a Write Shared Variable and Read Shared Variable file. One set is for StringArray type Shared Variable (named StrArr in the library), and the other set is for String type Shared Variable (named Str in the library).
    String Array example:
    MultipleDS-Write-SharedV-StrArr.vi / MultipleDS-Read-SharedV-StrArr.vi
In my String Array shared variable, I use only 4 element array, each having 4 character strings - meaning 16 bytes per String Array data. I have two loops in the write file, writing to the same variable, an array of 4 strings, each loop continues until the loop index is >0. This means, sometimes, depending on the processor speed, the variable will be written 3 times or 4 times (the variable could have a new value before the loop condition is checked).
So this means, if I have buffer of 100 bytes (16*4=64<100), it's enough for 4 such arrays (of 4 elements, each element with 4 characters) could be buffered to have sufficient time at the client (Read) program to read them.
I am putting 2048 bytes in buffer, which is much more than sufficient in my case.
The writer loops run with 200 ms to wait for each iteration. The reader loop runs with 100 ms in DS timeout and 100 ms in wait timer. This gives results without any loss. However, if I run the reader loop with 1000 ms to wait for each iteration, the data is lost. The buffer is not maintained for 2048 bytes.
In the read program, just to make sure if all data is read or not, I am showing data in two different string indicators, showing data of each loop.
    String example:
    MultipleDS-Write-SharedV-Str.vi / MultipleDS-Read-SharedV-Str.vi
The String Array shared variable didn't show values in the Distributed System Manager. Hence, I created another simple variable with String datatype.
The writer program writes strings of 4 characters, one-by-one, in two loops. Meaning, total 8 strings of 4 characters each are written in the "Str" Shared variable.
The reader program, however, doesn't always display all the 8 strings. Although the wait timer is not high (slow) it still misses some data usually. Data is overwritten even before the buffer is filled (in buffer, I have defined 50 strings with 4 elements in each).
In both of the Read programs, I read using datasocket. I think thought datasocket has more ability to buffer. Earlier I had "BufferedRead" in DataSocket, which I have changed to just Read, because BufferedRead didn't give any special buffer advantage in the Shared Variable reading.
---- This is an update on the issue.
Ok, just while typing the last paragraph above, regarding datasocket, something clicked in my mind, and I changed the DataSocket functions to simple Shared variables (completely eliminating datasocket functions) in the read programs as well. And bingo, the buffer works as expected, even if I have reading loops very very slow, there is no data loss in any of the program sets.
The two changed Read programs are also included in the attached project - MultipleSV-Read-SharedV-Str.vi and MultipleSV-Read-SharedV-StrArr.vi
So this means, I can completely eliminate DataSockets (not even using PSP URLs in DataSocket Open/Read functions) from my programs.
One question here, what will be an advantage of this (or any side effects that I should be keeping in mind)?

  • How Often to Restart an ECC 6.0 Instance?

    Hi,
I have notice that after a few weeks the buffers start swapping a lot in ST02 in our production instance application servers.  The only way I know to fix this is to restart the instance.  1. Is there a way to clear/defragment the buffers without restarting?  2. How often should the instances be restarted?  Our plants run 24x7 so downtime is hard to come by.
Our buffer parameters are set according to SAP Earlywatch recommendations.
    Thank you,
    Shelby

    Hi,
/$sync it will reset the buffer as well as number ranges too. so i recomend /$TAB instead of /$Sync.
/$TAB will just reset the buffer without restarting the system.
