Buffer Underrun problems

I recently tried to burn a DVD project in iDVD. However, the first, third and fourth times I tried it, near the end of "Writing Lead-In", it gave me a "Buffer Underrun" error. (The second time I had tried it, it got all the way to "Finishing..." and froze.) I have no clue as to why this could be happening-- I have plenty (over 150 GB) of hard-drive space and 4.5 GB of memory. Burning the same DVD project to a disk image worked fine. Please help!
Dual 2.3 Ghz PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hey there. Are you burning this to an internal DVD burner or one that is externally attached? This can happen not only due t memory problems but also with bandwidth issues with writing to an external drive.
Also, do you have FileVault turned on? If so, this really screws things up when burning DVDs... I have gotten the buffer underrun message with older versions of iDVD when this feature is turned on.

  • BURNING PROBLEM - BUFFER UNDERRUN

    Hi!
There is a problem: i have brand new G5 quad and i can't burn dvd's from idvd or dvd studio pro - i have same problem - first computer tells me 'writing led-in data' and after a few attempts i have alert about buffer underrun. (The recording device reported the illegal request: Buffer underrun. (0x21, 0x02.))
What funny is - i can properly burn dvd's from finder! Can anybody tell me what is going on? Don't tell me about no name dvd's - i'm using good brand and i can trust them.
PLEASE HELP - I have bought QUAD for dvd mastering and burning.

Are you creating a disc image and burning that to a disc or are you attempting to burn directly to a disc? Unless you need dual-layer support, I would HIGHLY recommend against burning directly to disc. Both iDVD and DVDSP allow you to create a disc image of your projects.
If you cannot burn your disc image to a disc, then chuck the media (not literally) and find yourself a different brand of media. I also recommend using Toast instead of Finder or Disk Utility to burn your disc image with... you have much more control over the burn speed with Toast.
Also, you have burned DVDs using iDVD or DVDSP before, correct? Just want to make sure that this isn't your first stab at it... you might be building your projects incorrectly.

  • Buffer Underrun error message - what is it and how do I fix it ?

I am getting a 'buffer underrun' error message when I am burning to DVD (using iDVD); this means that only soundtrack is fully copied over, but not visuals. Any idea how I fix this ?

  • Formatting Error.. illegal request...Buffer Underrun

    Hi All..
I'm having trouble burning an FCP 5 to DSP 4. I have correctly exported the files to Mpeg-2, using both the File--Export--QuickMoive etc, and/or using Compressor.
    I usually get(something like this)
Fomatting Failed. Unable to format disc, illegal request. Buffer Underrun (0x21, 0x20).
I even tried using idvd instead and it happens there also..
Out of 15-20 Tries with new DVD's each time, it only burned twice. Of those the disc would play but none of the menus worked(that could be a me problem, not linking an assest right)
Is this a Super Drive failure, Hardware Failure
I'm going to try the file on campus, and see if I can burn it there on a different MAC.
I'm sorta new to the Mac Universe, so any guidance would be helpful.
Oh yeah, I'm using a Dual Core 2.0 GHZ G5, with a 1GB of Ram, upgraded Graphic card, Latest Tiger...etc

Are you doing anything else on the Mac whilst you are burning - network access, Internet surfing, screen savers, energy savers of any kind - anything that will demand CPU processing power? If so, don't!
This question came up just about a week ago - run a search for buffer underrun in the forum. The situation occurs when the DVD writer is left waiting for data to be sent to it... it's buffer runs out of data. This is usually caused by the main processor being used by some other process and not being able to keep a steady stream of data being sent to the writer.

  • G5 quad buffer underrun error when burning dvd's

    4 x 2.5 Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)
i just tried to burn a dvd from dvdsp and keep getting a error. it is
    Sense Key=ILLEGAL REQUEST
    Sense Code = 0x21,0x02
    Buffer Underrun
i tried using toast as well with the same result. my dvd drive is also making a lot of noise when it trys to burn. i was able to burn a dvd (data files) using the finder and the dvd burner doesn't make the same noise. i've seen this problem in other discussions and still don't have a sense of what is causing this. some have mentioned bad media, but why would the dvd burner work through the finder and not through dvdsp? or toast?
could this be a software bug or bad hardware?
    any help would be appreciated.
    4 x 2.5 Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   dvdsp 4.0.2

There is a work around. In DVD Pro, "format" with the output device set to disc and the format to ".img". When this is finished, open Disk Utility and "convert" the .img file to a CD/DVD master (.cdr). This file can then be used to burn to a blank DVD. If you click the options arrow in the burn dialog before beginning the burn, you can select a speed other than "maximum". Not elegant, but it works. My HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B DVD drive only succeeds at burning at its maximum rate about 1/3 of the time. However, at 12X it has been quite reliable.

  • DVD writer buffer underrun

My DVD drive in my G5 tower packed in recently, so I bought a Pioneer DVR-115D to replace it. It writes CDs, but won't write a dvd. Every time I try, the system returns a buffer underrun error. I have tried four different media brands, +R and -R, have checked the jumper setting and am about to chuck it out of a window...
Using Toast 8, and the firmware of the drive is 1.12.
    Any ideas, anyone?
    Thanks in anticipation....

With modern media, 4X is probably going to be the slowest you can burn at. Even at a slow speed of 4X, the drive is burning over 5 MB per second. The DVR-115D has a buffer of 2 MB, so the data stream to your burner from the source location can only be interrupted for less than half a second before the buffer runs out of data and you get the buffer underrun error.
I don't think Toast 9 would provide any assistance in this area. This issue is really a hardware problem.
Where is the data that you're trying to burn stored? Local hard drive, shared folder on a network, etc? What else are you working on while burning the disc? What other programs are running?
You shouldn't be getting a buffer underrun error unless your source is very slow, prone to hiccups, or being used heavily during the burn process.
There is a newer firmware version for that drive, version 1.18. I'm not sure it would help, but it's certainly possible.

  • Recording device reported illegal request: buffer underrun

"Errors found during the burning process....illegal request: Buffer underrun (0x21, 0x02)"
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Kim

    Hello Kim,
a buffer underrun occurs when the data stream to the burner is interrupted (i.e. the data is not coming fast enough). As the burner cannot interrupt the burn process, it is being aborted.
This error is commonly associated with burn speed and/or incompatible DVD media. You might want to try to create a disk image and burn that with either Disk Utility or Toast (both apps allow you to control burn speed - iDVD does not).
iDVD 4 disc image burning can be enabled through the patch HPfurz:
    http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/macsupport/mac_help/pages/0015-burn_idvdother.html
burn at slow speed (2x) and use high quality DVD-R media (e.g. Verbatim)
    hope this helps

  • PA, ALSA, QL : buffer underruns and crackling audio

i'm running pulseaudio on up-to-date arch, with gnome atm.
The only way i can get the audio in quake live to stop stuttering (spamming buffer underruns in console ) is to set s_alsa_latency in the game very high (a little too high for gaming).
I found a topic with the same symptons on the QL forum but the solutions presented there didnt work for me (s_mixahead and s_mixprestep, s_alsa_latency, s_alsa_pcm to directly acces the divice, bypassing pulse, and setting pulse to time the traditional way). At least not without using very high values for latency(250ish).
I have also followed the arch pulseaudio wiki and the perfect setup guide from the pa website from start to finish multiple times now, but nothing seems to work.
The install is fresh, i reinstalled yesterday. Before that i had the same setup but everything worked (after some tinkering, although i dont remember what i did back then)
So, i was asking myself, could i change something in pulse to fix this, instead of crapping up the latency? Any help on solving this great mistery is apreciated.

Try specifying period_size and buffer_size - see my config below, for more info.
In my experimentation, flash needs a buffer_size of over 6000, roughly.
    E.g.:
    period_size 1024
    buffer_size 8192

  • Toast Buffer Underrun Error from iDVD .img

    Happy New Year All.
Need help, iMovie project is 3hrs 59mins, disk image appears (7.46GB) and plays fine.
Toast Titanium 7.0.2 gets to Writing Lead-in/Preparing then returns Buffer Underrun Error. Prevention is checked in Recorder settings.
I've gone done to the slowest write speed with the same result.
Strange things is, whether I drag or navigate to .img to mount the disk image, a "1" in the .img title is changed to a "!" in the Toast window, and DVD Player opens up the image. Is this normal?

  • DVD Burn Buffer Underrun

After six full days of frustration, I made a wonderful discovery about why I was constantly getting the buffer underrun notice, in IDvd, ITunes, Toast, Finder and yes Utility Burn!!!!
It was the Media stupid!!! (Thats for me) I was using Apple blanks, Verbatum blanks and TYK Blanks and every time "Buffer Underrun". I finaly bought some Cheap $15 for 50 Memorex Printable 16X's and Hayoo!! they are burning like champs. Happy New Year to ALLL and to All a good night!!

    William,
I appreciate your frustration and am glad that you found a solution, but generally most of us have found Memorex to be inferior to other media. Verbatim still tops my list.
Do a search in these iDVD discussions for media recommendations for more details.
Hope Memorex still works for you, but FWIW, I wouldn't use them again....

  • Buffer Underrun Protection - Simple Question

Hello. I've searched this forum (and Roxio's) for about an hour, and I can't find a simple answer to this question.
I know that to create a stable DVD for replication, I should have Lossless Linking turned OFF. Yet, if I burn using Toast (which many on this forum recommend), should the "Buffer Underrun Protection" be turned on or off?
The wording in the manual is very ambiguous. Can anyone that knows please spread the wealth?
    Thanks
    PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Buffer underrun protection should be on normally to prevent bad burns, have not heard of it being an issue, maybe someone else here has more info,
Make sure you also speak to the replicator on how they want the DVD prepared.

    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   DVD SP 4.0.3

There are a few ways you can use Toast to burn your DVD.
The following way is the best way to use DVD SP and Toast integrated together.
Author your DVD in DVD SP, be sure to have All Regions checked.
When it is all finished, select Build/Format.
Select your appropriate folder to build your VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder, then select output device>Harddrive, then DDP 2.0 is set by default.
You will be prompted to save the DVD.img file to your drive. Rename it to your DVD like MY_MOVIE.img or whatever your DVD is called.
When it finishes building/formatting, close DVD SP.
Open up Toast and select COPY
I have Toast 7 so this is how it works.... (Toast 5 did it differently, but still you need to burn a .img file)
Select COPY, then IMAGE FILE to the left.
Drop your .img file into the main window, hit the RECORD button.
This will bring up a prompt for a write speed.
If you are making a master, it is advised to use the lowest speed possible (1X DVD), if you DVDR will let you.
Some only go as low as 4X. I typically use 4X because i use 16X Verbatim media and it only goes to 4X.
A full 4.37gb DVD at 1X is like 55 minutes. 2x is 27min, 4x is 14 min, and so on.
But this is the best way to make a master.
Then you can make copies from this at a higher speed if you want.
Be sure to VERIFY the disc after it burns. It will prompt you to do so.
You can also use the VIDEO tab and select DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS on the left. I would advise against this method although you can. It has to do with the way DVD SP builds your VIDEO_TS folders. Although you set it to all region, if you just BUILD the project it has a RCM Value (Region Code Mask) of 64 (0 is all region). It has a bug which deselects Region 7. Not sure why, but it does.
So if you Build/Format, it will be RCM Value of 0.
That is why it is best to do an .img file and burn in Toast which is better burning software.
    Hope this info helps.

  • Free Buffer Waits Problem

    Hi there,
    (OS= OL, DB=11.2, RAM=128g, CPUs=16)
I have a large bulk DML operation (using MERGE statement) to populate a cube-like table with about 3,000,000 records per day from about 600,000 records fact table data. It takes approximately 7 minutes to complete. It can be seen from OEM that the wait event: Free Buffer Waits is the main wait event during this operation.
I spent some time googling the issue to find ways to get rid of that, but I'm get disappointed. I dont know now that if there is a problem in my DB parameters or it is related to OS level configuration or even other reasons. The DB is using AMM with 100g as the MEMORY_TARGET parameter and the cube-like table doesnt use ASSM.
Please help me to learn how to handle the problem. This can be said in terms of some checking approaches to control the environment or any other ways.

    @Nikolay Savvinov
No I don't have that. any other monitoring tools?
    @Rob_J
Can you provide me with some links to illustrate this?
    @Jonathan Lewis
I found that wait event in the OEM performance curves. In OEM, the amount of time that some CPUs are dealing with some occurrences is shown in terms of performance curves, I think. In other word, I dont know how to provide you with what fraction of 7 minutes consumed for that wait event. I can tell you things I think useful which maybe non-scientific:
As I mentioned before, I'm using a merge statement. As you know, this statement starts with a evaluation of using clause and then the DB decides on update or insert. I think the wait event is not due to first sub-operation but it is for insert operation and with a lower probability for update. The curve of "Free Buffer Wait" in the configuration class of OEM conforms with this assumption. It does not exists in first minute of 7 minutes. We can assume that the CPUs are calculating the using statement. Then it suddenly raised up to its peak and after some seconds, say 30-40 seconds, it falls down dramatically to a very little amount and goes on this way to eventually fade out at 5th minute. Please help me if there is a more scientific way to express the event.
    Tnx,
    SMSK.

  • Buffer Refresh problem in BAPI_BATCH_CREATE while IDOc Processing.

    Hi All,
I am creating a scenario using IDOC. The scenario has 2 steps.
    1. Create SAP Batch (Tcode: MSC1N)
    2. Create Goods Movement with movement type 309 (Material to Material Transfer)
I am getting all the required information for the above 2 transactions in a single IDOC in SAP R/3.
I have also identified the BAPIs for the above 2 transactions. I am using bapi 'BAPI_BATCH_CREATE' for creating BAPI.
But when I execute the first bapi "BAPI_BATCH_CREATE" it refeshes the buffer and hence, the idoc looses all its data and restarts again. As a result the IDoc is processed again from the beginning.
My analysis is that, when the first BAPI executes Commit Work statement, it refreshes the buffer, and hence the session looses its data. This results in re-execution of IDoc.
Can you please suggest me solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    Atul

Thanks  Madhu for your input, But still the issue is same.
i have added call to the bapi like this
    ELSE.
                  idoc_status-docnum = idoc_contrl-docnum.
                  idoc_status-status = '53'.
                  idoc_status-msgty = 'S'.
                  APPEND idoc_status.
                  CALL FUNCTION 'BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT'
                  EXPORTING
                    WAIT          =
                  IMPORTING
                    RETURN        =
                ENDIF.
one more point here althought i am getting messge after the execution that idoc got processed by FM Z_IDOC_INPUT_ZQMSLD...
still the transaction is running for a long time.....i had to stop it after a long time when there was no response.
Is something wrong with the code?
