BufferedWriter filesize limit
Hi,
Is there a limit on the size of file that can be written with a BufferedWriter/FileWriter?
I have a file which has been mysteriously truncated at 1,196,032 bytes.
For example, I ran the following:
import java.io.*;
public class Test {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
File file = new File("junk.txt");
BufferedWriter w = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(file));
for(int i=0; i<2000000; ++i) {
w.write("All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy");
w.newLine();
w.close();
System.out.println("File length =" + file.length());
file.delete();
}And got the output: File length =88000000

Hello all
I plan to use an applet to send a file to a servlet for file uploading. here is the catch, when I use <input type = file> I was limited to 100 megabaytes. I am trying to transfer upto 800 megabytes - 1gigabyte of data (specifically video). before I start, are there any filesize limits ? Also what type of connection would you recommend for video files this big
ThanksCross-posted :-p

when I try to upload a newly built src package to the aur, it tells me:
413 Request Entity Too Large
This usually means there's a limit set on uploads with nginx, but in my case the file is only 2.3mb; that seems low for a limit on install packages. Anyone know what the actual limit is?No, I'm not sure I'm not breaking their license. Their EULA still displays whenever it runs for the first time, and the software itself is based on a number of other FOSS applications so I doubt they'd have any huge issues. If it's a legal issue for the AUR then I'll take it down.
As for how to best prepare this, I'm sure everyone has their 'best way' and progandy's example may well be a better way than mine. I spent half a day, took the way I manually made it work, and made it reproduce-able for others that might want to use this display client on their Arch systems (admittedly probably very few). If you don't like the way I did it, don't use it; build your own, or if you really care that much I'll let whoever wants to take over the package.
I've used Arch exclusively for personal systems for close to 5 years, Linux exclusively for far longer. People always say 'contribute if you can', and I was just trying to contribute in the best way I know how. I got two screens worth of 'you did this wrong' for my trouble, so my incentive to contribute further at this point is quite low.

1-I've tried to upload a "song" into my 3220, but an error occured: file too big!?
free memory about 850KB, filesize 660KB, and I can't get it in!?
WHY?
2-does someone know where to get some FREE software to convert my .mp3 files into something supported by NOKIA3220?
enjoy burek!1) The 850KB your phone has is segements for use by the phones Messages, Contacts, Gallery and Java applications. Therefore not all of it is available for use in the gallery (where you are storing the song).
2) While your phone only plays AMR files that are intended for voice recordings and not music, you can use the converter tool called SUPER from www.erightsoft.com
Experience and persistence are second to none just ask user one.

External Harddrive Filesize Limit
I bought an external 250 GB Iomega Harddrive to back up big Videofiles. It limits the filesize I can store on there to 4 GB. What am I doing wrong? Should it be formatted differently? If I reformat will I loose information that is already on the drive?
Thanks
Stefan
IMac 20 inch 2 GHz G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9)Your drive is formatted for Windows, FAT 32, you will
have to reformat in order to use its full capacity,
the FAT is limited to a max of 4GB.
You can use <a

/23828>iPartition to save what's on the drive
now, and format the other part for Macs.
Please post back with results,

Thanks for the quick answer. So what do I have to change the format to? From FAT 32 to a MAC specific format? Is there anything in Disc Utility that will help me, or do I have to buy IPartition?
If I start from scratch with a new harddrive can I format with Disc Utility?

Gzip / gunzip filesize limit
What is the gzip and gunzip file size limit is for solaris 9.

Is there a filesize limit with Loader.load()?
I'm loading a 33MB .swf, and my preloader is removed by the Flash Player and replaced by this strange graphic while the swf is loaded.
Yeah you're right, when importing from Illustrator, some of the text came in as TLF fields. It's kind of hard to find all of them, do you know of an easy to way to find all TLF text-fields in the library? Thanks kglad

HDD Formats - Other than 2GB limit, should FAT32 work OK with FCE4?
I know about the 2GB filesize limit, but are there any other limitations when using FAT32 format for my external drive with FCE4?
Have been using this setup for more than six months, but I've got a really weird problem going on with some AVCHD clips I have ingested where the filenames keep changing. Spontaneously. While browsing the directory in Finder!
In FCE, it's resulting in media disconnection issues when I re-open sequences. Completely messes up QT reference files too.
I've seen various references to 'should use HFS+' when using external drives with FCE - but nothing definitive? Could someone set me straight? Have I been misguided in thinking that FAT32 would be okay?
I use the same HDD from time to time with a WinXP computer -- so keeping it as FAT32 is my preferred option. The HDD in question is a LaCie Porsche 160GB on firewire 400.
Thanks in advance
ShaneFCE does not officially support working with FAT32 drives. The drive should be formatted as Mac OS Extended if you are using it with FCE.
The fact that you are getting weird behavior such as spontaneous file name changes indicates that something is amiss. Are you sure you haven't used any non-printing ASCII characters, or ? / \ " | > * in the filenames - that would definitely cause problems.
While I understand your desire to use the drive with both your Mac and your PC, for use with FCE you really should reformat to Mac OS Extended. There is an app called MacDrive that you can put on your PC to read Mac formatted drives. -
Problems getting images to export down to 200kb limit for posting on websites
websites often have a size limit that they can accept when you download an image. For example BPN's forum has a 200KB limit. Since 3.3, I often have problems getting an export from a Canon raw file or DNG down to that size. I get an error message indicating that it cannot create an image that size. Never had the problem on 3.2. (note I can export to email but that is a very small file and I would like files closer to 200KB and within the 1000 x 800 pixels to be downloaded)...thoughts?
I too recently had major problems using filesize limit. I pretty-much never use it m'self, so its a dont-care to me personally, but my conclusion was: its broken.
PS - I did not scrutinize for a long time... - just got a lot of "can not make image" errors when I believed I should not have gotten those errors.
I'd suggest a good scrutinizing followed by an official bug report.
Honestly, I think controlling quality is a better solution, whenever possible (unless you have constraints imposed by an external agency...) The reason: not all photos need the same amount of bits to look decent. So, in general its better to have some photos take more while others take less, and have the average filesize be limited, not individual filesizes.

FILE SIZE LIMIT WITH UTL_FILE?
Hello all,
is there any file size limit using utl_file on SUSE LINUX 5.3
(RDBMS 8.0.5)?
We have created a file with UTL_FILE.FOPEN, put some line into it
(UTL_FILE.PUT_LINE), and close the file (UTL_FILE.FCLOSE).
The file size is never greater than 32 kB.
On 7.3.4 the same procedure works fine with files larger than 1
MB.
Thx

Robert,
There is no limit on the size of the file created using the
utl_file package. It could be the limitation of the shell
above which you are working on. You may verify the filesize
limit of the shell and try it again.

Data filesize is too large - fails to copy to ZenX
I have a Nomad Jukebox ZenXtra (30GB) with 29GB free and am trying to copy a 3GB data file to it to use as a portable hard dri've to share the data with another laptop. When I try to paste it to a data folder on the Jukebox I get the filesize is too big error. What is the single filesize limit's And is there a way to bypass that and put a single 3GB file on the device?
thanks,
SteveCarrying data with my zen xtra has been overall a disapointment. I also encountered this limitation, which is very annoying. Apart from that, there is another irritating side on the nomad explorer software. When I copy a file from van zen xtra to my hd, it first copies it to my temp folder and then to the location on my d-partition where I really wanted it. So when it's done, I have to go to my temp folder and delete the file over there, so that I don't have the file two times on my HD...

Trying to get lighttpd to upload a file through perl cgi
Hi, I'm quite new in these things, so I might be doing something obvious wrong, but I'd like some help on this.
I'm trying to make a webpage where people can upload files, this is the html page (located at /srv/html/index.html):

The site is running over https with a self signed ssl-cert, if that matters. If I try to upload a file, the browser just quickly reloades the page, the filename still in the input field. The file isn't uploaded and the page that the script should display when completed doesn't show neither.
Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this? I'm not getting any errors, it just doesn't work..I haven't used Websphere before so I can't say much about that. Try putting <%@ page language="Java" %> at the top of your jsp page.
Try putting your java files into a package and see if that helps. I read somewhere that Tomcat once had issues with running classes that weren't in a package. Make sure to put the package statement at the top of your Java files if you do.
Websphere says it caught an unhandled exception. Instead of having your method throw and Exception put your code in a try-catch block and then print a stack trace to see if it says anything when it trys to read and write data.
Try{
PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter("doUpload.txt")));
ServletInputStream in = request.getInputStream();
int a=0;
a=in.read();
while (a!= -1){
pw.print((char) a);
a=in.read();
pw.close();
}catch(Exception e){
e.printStackTrace();
}Sorry I can't really give you more help.

Itunes library on external hdd for mac and pc
I want to store my my iTunes library on an external hdd and use it with a Mac and a PC. All changes made on the Mac should be recognised on the PC and all changes made on the PC should although be recognised on the Mac - one library for both.
I already tried to store my library from my PC on an external HDD and then started iTunes on the Mac, pressing "alt". But I wasn't able to open the library. When I choose library.itl, the Mac just opens iTunes without opening my iTunes library.
Any ideas, how I can put all my music, videos and podcasts on the external and then use it on Mac and PC?
Kind regards,
MatthiasThe only format drive that will work with both a Mac and a PC without you using additional drivers is an older format called FAT. Disk Utility can create this. Otherwise if you use Windows' NTFS you need something like NTFS3G or MacFuse, and if you use OSX's HFS format you will need MacDrive on Windows (others may also work for both PC and Mac -- those are just the ones I could remember).
Theoretically the Mac should have been able to read the .itl on the Windows NTFS drive but maybe since it found it could not write to it, it reverted to default.
Note, if anything happens to the FAT32 drive you will need to repair it using Windows. I also assume you aren't usign this drive for huge files because FAT32 has a 4GB filesize limit.
You will have to completely erase the drive to partition and re-format it.

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

Incorrect free space reported on FAT32 USB drive
I'm suspecting this is an issue deeper than Finder, but here we go:
I have an 80GB external drive that connects via USB and is formatted FAT32 (for compatibility with my Windows machine and PS3, so this can't change, unfortunately).
The other day, I noticed Finder reporting that only 15GB were available, which didn't seem right. After doing some checks, it is indeed wrong: I've only used 15GB. I've confirmed this with three different tools: Finder itself (using "get info"), the command 'du -csh' while in the drive's directory in /Volumes, and OmniDiskSweeper. All of them agree: only 15GB have been used, on an 80GB drive. Yet it still say it's 15GB free.
So I did a bit more checking. Figuring that I might not have partitioned it correctly, I had a look in fdisk, and the partition spans the whole drive. 'df -h' reports that the partition is 74GB in total, which sounds about right. But df also shows only 15GB remaining. Weird.
Wondering if I'd done an unsafe unmounting, I ran fsck on it, but that turned up nothing (I was hoping for orphaned inodes, but zilch). I know about the 4GB filesize limit on FAT32, and none of my files approach that (the largest being 3GB). I've done some searching online, and haven't found anything useful.
So, anyone heard of anything like this, or have any suggestions that I haven't tried, that aren't "use HFS+ or some other better fs"?
Thanks in advance.Thanks for the reply. I tried as you suggested (only I made several 4GB files, due to the FAT32 filesize limit). Whenever I encountered the supposed maximum, if I made a file slightly larger than the remaining space (my a megabyte or so), the remaining space would increase by 3GB. After doing this a few times, I tried deleting them (about 25GB-worth), and the free space went back to 15.03GB, as it was before.

i want to backup my mackbook pro which has around 300gb
i have an external 2tb ard drive which already has around 1tb of data on it
and i have tried the time machine set up and it says it needs to wipe data...? is there any way around this
also is it worth partitioning the 2tb drive to 1tb each and have the time machine on one partition and any other files i need to save on the other partition?
i am trying to understanding the saving structure better
ideally i would want to access the 2tb harddrive on a windows machine too? is that possible? so it will have the the time machine backup and other files which i can access via a mac or a windows machine
please helpMake 2 partitions, one for Time Machine, formatted for Mac only (MacOS Extended (Journaled), the other should be formatted as Fat32 or ExFat for use with Macs and Windows. Fat32 is the more reliable choice but ... it has a filesize limit of 4GB, if that will be an issue for you choose ExFat.
Unless you have to I strongly suggest using Fat32 rather than ExFat.
Oh, all data currently on the drive will be erased, so move it somewhere else or back it up before you start.
