Bug 10.1.3.0.3.3412: Backspace key not mapping to backspace

In version 10.1.3.0.3.3412, the mapped "SHIFT-BACKSPACE" works as a backspace. However, whenever I hit the BACKSPACE key (only), no backspace happens. When I try to map this key to backspace, the app is not recognizing it. Previous versions of 10.1.3 worked fine.

Hi,
I just pulled the release from OTN and installed it in a fresh directory with no migration of older versions.
I also tried internal builds that don't come with a JDK and instead I am using JDK 1.5_007.b3

  • X11 issue:  e key is mapped to backspace in X11 apps

    I've had this problem before but can't remember what I did to get it fixed...
    I ssh into my office linux machine to launch firefox and have it displayed on my Mac Pro here at home. This works fine. The one problem I have is that when working with firefox (via ssh, displaying on my Macs X11) the "e" key is mapped to backspace.
    Office machine is Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop, with firefox 3 beta. I guess I'll try Opera too...
    Any ideas?

    This is most likely to an errant "xmodmap" somewhere in the shell init scripts on the Linux box. If you can run "xev" on the Mac you should be able to see which keycode the "e" key is generating. If you then look through the shell init scripts on the Linux side, you'll likely find that this keycode is being remapped to the backspace.
    To make matters worse, this remapped key doesn't just apply to the X clients invoked via that particular ssh session, it will affect all X clients running on your Mac.
    What I would suggest is modifying your init scripts on the Linux side so that they never invoke xmodmap for remote connections. The syntax depends on the shell you use, but it will be something similar to this (shown for tcsh):
    if (! ${?REMOTEHOST} && ${?DISPLAY} ) then
    # Make sure backspace is correctly mapped
    xmodmap -e "keycode 22 = BackSpace"
    endif
    In fact, I'll wager you have an xmodmap line almost exactly like that. I note that on my FreeBSD machine keycode 22 is what my backspace key generates, but on my Mac keycode 22 is what my "e" key generates.
    Yep, I've been down this road before on other operating systems. I actually thought my keyboard had gotten fried because the "t" key stopped working altogether. Turns out it was an errant xmodmap on a remote machine.

  • Backspace Key not working since update to 10.5.8

    Hi,
    I recently updated to 10.5.8 (or which ever update it was where the iDisk icon turned blue) and now my backspace key doesn't seem to be working. I am using a white Apple USB keyboard. The backspace key now functions like the forward delete key and if I want to backspace I have to press Shift + Backspace. This is very frustrating and not something I have had to do before or need to do on my Powerbook.
    At first I thought the keyboard was broken, but I am running a Power Mac G4 on a switch cable with the same keyboard and monitor. I have updated the Power Mac to 10.5.8 and the backspace key works fine.
    If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
    Yours
    Dominic

    I think you wanted to say Mail 4.6, or is Mail 3.6 right? There's a bug in OS X 10.6.8 that may make Mail stop working after updating to 10.6.8. Apple has got the steps to fix that > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4424?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Backspace key not working

    Approx. a week ago my backspace key stopped working.  Haven't a clue as to why or what might have triggered this.  All other keys appear to work.  No other issues detected on my system.  Have tried reseating the key, air dusting the area, etc.

    Any suggestions on troubleshooting?

    Hi,
    In my experience with Maple I have noticed that some versions do not accept backspace and will only register shift-backspace as a valid combination.
    Try using shift-backspace and let me know if that works.

  • Backspace key not working - Macbook Pro using Mavericks

    I've got a Macbook Pro (early 2011 model) which I upgraded to Mavericks earlier this year and all has been working fine. Over the past few days I noticed my backspace key was playing up (sometimes it worked, other times I had to press hard a few times before it would work at all) until today when it decided it would not work at all. I have already checked in System Preferences and restored defaults as well as resetting the PRAM but to no avail so far. Is there anything else I can try or will I need to take it back to the store and get it looked at?

    Since you reset the PRAM, I would take it in for diagnosis.

  • Macintosh 128k backspace key not working

    I just bought an operational 1984 Macintosh 128k. All of the keys work, but backspace. Since this is a key I use a lot, I want to have it work. There is something wrong with the key, not the software. If I go to Key Caps, the backspace button on the screen will work if I press it. The key on the computer, for some reason, will not backspace when using macwrite. What should I do?

    Try E-Bay. Any keyboard for the 128k, 512k, or the Macintosh Plus will work for you. The later versions of the keyboard include a number pad while the earlier ones did not. Any Mac after the Plus, such as the SE or Classic, will not work since they use ADB.
    It's not likely you can repair it. I'd recommend gently popping off the button (be careful not to force it off) and see if cleaning it helps. You mentioned that it works only with the caps-lock, which is unusual, which may mean it could be electrical. Most likely you can't repair it.
    While I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem, you can try to boot off another disk just to double-check.

  • Backspace key not working on SQL Developer 3.2.20.09 on Mac OS X 10.7.4

    Hi,
    I've searched around and found that the backspace and arrow key problem has been a known issue on 1.x versions of SQL Developer. In that version the fix was to reload the keyboard Accellerator bindings in Tools->Preferences->Accellerators. However, the Accellerator dialog isn't available on 3.2.2 version. Is there any other way to fix it? I know on some Macs, the keys work fine.
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
    The Accelerator feature was renamed. Rather than
    Tools->Preferences->Accelerators -> Load Presettry instead
    Tools->Preferences-> Shortcut Keys -> More Actions -> Load Keyboard SchemeHopefully reloading in 3.2.2 will have the same impact as in the 1.x releases for your issue.

  • Keyboard wonky.... delete/backspace key not working

    I have the flat Ali keyboard. Got it about a month ago. It was working OK until yesterday. Went to System Preferences and set the F9 key to show "All windows". After doing this, the Delete key began working in forward-space manner instead of backspace.
    The ARROW keys no longer work. Left arrow goes all the way to the top of the page, rather than one space back. Other three arrows do nothing.
    Went back to System Preferences. Selected reset defaults. Did not fix the problem.
    What do I try next?

    Eventually found the answer myself. I deselected the button for "Use F1 and F2 keys as standard....."
    It has been a good reminder to only change one thing at a time when "messing" with the System Preferences panel.

  • G,H,Backspace Keys Not Working- G7 Series Notebook

    Product name: HP Pavilion G7-B5Z48UA
    Operating system: Windows 8 64 bit
    I purchased this computer about a month ago, and it was fine. A few days ago, I noticed that several of the keys (g,h,',backspace, 8) were not working. After the computer has been on for a few minutes, they start to work. This lasts for about a minute or two, then they stop working again.

    Hello Lorelly,
    Take a look at this page and follow the troubleshooting steps to update your BIOS.  The latest version (F.23) was released less than 25 days ago.
    Please let me know if this helps resolve your issue.
    Good luck!

  • Backspace key doesn't work during install

    I'm installing Oracle 10.2.0 under Solaris 10 05/08 I'm using PuTTY 0.6.0 and Cygwin as my X server. In the Oracle install windows, my backspace and delete keys do not work. They work fine everywhere else.

    hi jnojr
    what about making executing the following command in your shell before starting the runInstaller:
    stty erase <backspace key>
    stty delete <delete key>
    please read that document: http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/workshops/cool_unix/stty.html
    Read that also:
    http://www.linuxdocs.org/HOWTOs/Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO-5.html
    check your settings
    #stty -a
    What is the result of that command?
    If the issue is only on x11 then try that:
    Backspace key to generate a BackSpace:
    % xmodmap -e "keycode 22 = BackSpace"
    Delete key to generate a Delete:
    % xmodmap -e "keycode 107 = Delete"
    this should fix your issue.

  • Where or where is my backspace key?

    I am one of those annoying "switchers". Thus I have spent my computing life bound to a backspace key, not a delete key.
    Is there a way for me to configure the delete key such that it has backspace semantics?
    Thanks,
    BT
    PS:
    - Backspace removes characters to the LEFT of the cursor
    - Delete removes characters to the RIGHT of the cursor

    Hold down the Fn and Delete keys simultaneously to perform a backspace. You can also use an application such as this one to assign a different keystroke to the backspace function.

  • Backspace Key Clears Google Search Entry

    I've noticed something very strange happening with my phone. For some reason when I come back to my Google Search field in Safari to edit a search and press the backspace key, it clears the entire entry. Sometimes I may just want to revise just one word and not the whole search, but pressing backspace just clears the whole field. Does anyone know whether this is a feature or just a bug in the OS?

    I've seen this too. Maddening. Not consistent, but it happens often enough.
    I usually press on the data entry field till the magnifying glass shows up and position the cursor that way, which seems to lessen the likelihood that the backspace (X) key will clobber everything.

  • SelectionChange for enter and backspace keys

    Hello all,
    Our VSTO addin needs to know the current selection so we can sync our taskpane with current selection. We are using the SelectionChanged event to register our taskpane synch routine. The problem is that this event doesn't fire on Enter or backspace key.
    We are specifically interested in the scenarios where the Enter/backspace results in a paragraph change(para add on enter and paragraph remove on backspace of the last character in a para). It seems like a bug to me that SelectionChange wont
    fire on backspace when the delete key does fires it.
    Is there any other workaround to detect this paragraph change state?

    Hi,
    >> I am not interested in a cursor change but rather a paragraph change which would indicate a change from one para to next.
    The current object model does not have an event to be triggered when changing the content.
    If you want to detect the paragraph changing, we could also use a global Timer to detect the paragraph changing of the active document.
    >> Multiple documents - i would have to suspend/reactivate my timer on Activate/Deactivate events
    >> Multiple windows of the same document - If i have the same document open in multiple windows, split window, new window etc, how would this timer work?
    Here is the sample code for your reference:
    using System.Collections.Generic;
    using Word = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word;
    using System.Timers;
    using System.Runtime.InteropServices;

    private Timer addInTimer { get; set; }
    private Dictionary<string, int> ParagraphCountDict { get; set; }
    private void ThisAddIn_Startup(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
    addInTimer = new System.Timers.Timer();
    ParagraphCountDict = new Dictionary<string, int>();
    addInTimer.Interval = 1000;
    addInTimer.Elapsed += TimerElapsedHandler;
    addInTimer.Start();
    private void BindToChange(Word.Document document)
    ParagraphCountDict.Add(document.Name, document.Paragraphs.Count);
    private void TimerElapsedHandler(object sender, ElapsedEventArgs e)
    if(Application.Documents.Count == 0)
    return;
    try
    var activeDocument = Application.ActiveDocument;
    if (!ParagraphCountDict.ContainsKey(activeDocument.Name))
    BindToChange(activeDocument);
    var previousParagraphsCount = ParagraphCountDict[activeDocument.Name];
    var count = activeDocument.Paragraphs.Count;
    if (previousParagraphsCount != count)
    ParagraphCountDict[activeDocument.Name] = count;
    // trigger event
    ParagraphChangeHanlder(activeDocument);
    }catch(COMException comEx)
    private void ParagraphChangeHanlder(Word.Document document)
    System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox.Show("Paragraph Changed!");

    addInTimer.Stop();

  • Disable backspace key as 'go back'

    Does anyone know a way to prevent the backspace key from acting like a shortcut for "Go back"?
    I never, ever use backspace for that function. The only times I go to the previous webpage by pressing the backspace key are unintentional and often cause loss of information on dynamic webpages.
    I believe that making the backspace key act as both a text editing tool and a history navigation shortcut, based solely on whether the cursor is inside a text field or not, is a serious design flaw. I may be mistaken but I believe this behaviour was copied from Internet Explorer. Why on earth did Apple copy a design flaw from the most flawed browser in the world?
    So, kudos to anyone who knows a Safari equivalent of setting "browser.backspace_action 2" in Firefox.

    Hi Derek,
    This feature is sufficiently annoying to make we want to change browsers until Apple fixes it.
    Safari menu > Report Bugs to Apple...
    Everyone here on the forum is just a fellow user like yourself. I'm not aware of a way to override it, but maybe someone else will chime in.

  • How can I disable 'backspace' key from navigating back a page?

    Several times over the last couple weeks, I type up a very well thought out response on Facebook in political conversations with friends. An hour or two into my work, I hit backspace with the intent of editing what I wrote (maybe after I scrolled or something, so maybe I unintentionally took the edit window out of focus). The navigator takes me back a page and I lose my two hours of work. Infuriating! Shortcuts with the ability to wipe out two hours of works should be disable-able. Not only that, I feel that is an unsafe shortcut for this very reason, and would have added a SHIFT modifier key or something like that. I think I invented a cool word: disable-able.

    You can set the Integer pref <b>browser.backspace_action</b> to <i>2</i> on the <b>about:config</b> page to disable the backspace action. BTW Shift + Backspace does the reverse: going Forward if possible, so that is taken as well.
