***BUG*** Acroread 8.1.2 CANNOT PRINT pdfs from PLOS One...

Hello, after much hassle, I finally determined that my shiny new 8.1.2 installation (which is sweet!) CANNOT PRINT *ANY* PDFs generated by the online journal PLOS One. The CUPS debug output shows that the foomatic-rip renderer *always* dies with an "Illegal Seek (29)" error. These PDFs also CANNOT be printed to PS files -- same renderer error.
I have verified this behavior with several PLOS One PDFs. I have also verified that 8.1.2 *can* print other PDFs I have on my system. So the issue is with how 8.1.2 is handling PLOS One PDFs which may be non-conforming. HOWEVER, I distinctly remember being able to print PLOS One PDFs using Acroread 7. So this is a new problem with 8.1.2.
EDIT2: I dug up the 7.0.1 acroread which was left on my system after installing 8.1.2, and verified that it CAN print the two PDFs linked below. So this proves the issue is a BUG in 8.1.2 and I have filed a bug report with Adobe.
Representative PDFs can be found at the following links:
http://www.plosone.org/article/fetchObjectAttachment.action?uri=info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjou rnal.pone.0003446&representation=PDF
http://www.plosone.org/article/fetchObjectAttachment.action?uri=info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjou rnal.pone.0003309&representation=PDF
...or simply goto www.plosone.org and select any article and then select the PDF link.
The remainder of this post contains the CUPS debug2 log listing for printing a single page from a PLOS One PDF. I have included only the stuff involving the foomatic-rip renderer. Sorry for the length of the log dump... I jumped straight to debug2... :)
EDIT: ok, your forum clips posts *way* too short to let me post the debug listing... so I uploaded it here: http://wolbachiax.googlepages.com/cups_error_log.txt ...Please consider adding attachments support, or allowing long [code] blocks or longer posts.
Thanks,
-brice

When you select print from the menu bar a print
window opens. Verify that the correct printer is
selected. Adobe will over ride some defaults and put
in itself. Let me know if this didn't work.
Thanks Glynn, but the correct printer is indeed selected. This is a weird one!
FWIW, here is my CUPS error log:

I cannot print a pdf from preview either. Have you found out how to correct this yet?

  • Cannot print PDF from websites

We have about 50 PCs. We regulalry download documents from websites and print them out. But on one PC we are having problems. We can download the document and view it on screen. The problem PC does not have a local printer. Instead it is connected to two printers shared through the main server: a HP 4250 and a HP4014. We cannot print these downloaded PDFs to either printer. When we attempt to print the confirmation "bubble" does not appear about the tasktray, but he printer icon does appear. When I open the printer window it briefly dispalys a 1 for the number of print jobs. When I look at the list of jobs it says the job is spooling, then it deletes and disappears. If I view the queue from another PC it shows the job spooling and then disappearing. If I store the PDF locally it will print no problem. We have a couple of printers shared from PCs. I can print from the affected PC straight from websites to these printers no problem. Some of the documents we want to print do not have a save option. Instead we print to a virtual PDF printer, save locally, then open with Adobe Reader and it prints no problem. I have tried reinstalling the network printers, but doesn't fix the problem. We are running 10.1.4 on the affected PC. Any help would be much apprecited.

Some more information would be useful:
What application are you using to print, Preview, Adobe Reader, Acrobat, or something else?
What happens when you try to print? Can you not select it from the File menu? Does something go wrong with the Print dialog box? Is it something that happens afterwards?

  • Cannot print pdf from Excel. Saving as log file

I am trying to print an Excel page to pdf and everytime I get an error.
I am using Adobe Acrobat 9 and Excel 2010

You printed to Adobe PDF from excel.
There was an error which prevented the pdf from being created.
That log file lists the errors and seeing it's content might enable us to determine why the job failed.
Open the log file with Notepad or any text editor (Word)

  • I cannot print PDFs from Firefox.

Since I updated to Firefox 5.0 it shows PDFs differently, and will NO LONGER print them. The PDFs from these sites used to print okay, and still do print if I use Internet Explorer.
When I click Print on the menu or toolbar, nothing happens.
The Adobe style print box does not come up.
Print preview shows a blank page with only header & footer.

  • Cannot Print PDFs from Adobe Reader

    Hey gang-
Just purchased a new Brother MFC-9420CN color laser printer. Works great- with one exception.
I am unable to print any PDFs with it from Adobe Reader. But note this: The very same PDFs print fine using Preview! I initially discovered this problem using Adobe Reader 7.0.5, so I downloaded and installed the latest Adobe Reader 8.1. No Help. I also reinstalled the latest Brother Drivers- no help.
I then went into Printer Setup Utility and did the Reset Printing System- re-added all Printers- but no help. I am running OS 10.4.9 on a G5 iMac.
I've seen this mentioned elsewhere including here:

Thoughts on how to fix this?
    Thanks!

  • Cannot print .pdf from web browser, being prompted to save

We have Adobe Reader 9 installed
It is being run on a Vista OS
User is able to open a pdf file and print to the printer without any problems.
The problem occurs when the pdf is opened in a browser window.
When you select the print button and select to print the document, rather than printing as would be the norm, it defaults to saving to a location.
You can save it, then open what was saved in Reader and print it.
What changes need to be made in order for it to print from the browser rather than try to save?

    Hi ronquaedvlieg,
What is the current version of Reader installed on your machine?
Have you tried to install the latest version, also have you tried to check latest updated driver for your printer.
What is the problem you are facing while trying to print using Reader, are you getting any error. Attach screen shot of the error if any.
Also i moving this discussion under Reader forums.

Remove Adobe plug ins if any.

    Look for these two files.
    AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
    AdobePDFViewer.plugin
Right click it and then select Move to Trash”.

  • Cannot print pdf file in Adobe Reader XI

cannot print pdf file in Adobe Reader XI, using Win 7. msg: cannot print, and pages not selected

  • Cannot print PDF files on Mac OS X

    Hi,
since some update from Reader 8.1 to 8.1.2 I cannot print PDF files anymore. Meanwhile I installed Reader 9, but with no luck.
If I crank up the preferences I get the error "Failed to load an application resource (internal error)." ... maybe there is something wrong with the installation, but even an reinstall doesnt fix it.
If I try to print I get only the message "The document could not be printed" and then "There were no pages selected to print." ... no matter what PDF I try to print.
The Apple Preview works without any problems, so the PDFs should be good.
Can anyone help me on this ... its really frustrating.
    Best Regards
    --Michael

I had this same problem. I did a clean install of OS X 10.5.6 to an USB hard drive, installed Adobe Reader 9, and tried printing. It worked fine. Then I cloned the external drive back onto the internal drive and it failed with the same no pages selected problem.
It turns out that my filesystem on my internal hard drive is case sensitive, but the external hard drive had the default case-insensitive file system.
    To fix, do this:
Go get yourself an external firewire or usb hard drive at least as big as your internal drive. Plug it in and use Disk Utility.app (under /Applications/Utilities) to Erase it and format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". The download CarbonCopyCloaner, a free utility that can copy an entire drive. Use CCC to clone your Macintosh HD to the external drive.
Now that you have a backup drive, go to System Preferences and choose Startup Disk. Pick the external drive as the the startup drive. Reboot and check that your printing works properly now.
If that fixed your problem, while you are booted from the external drive, use Disk Utility to erase Macintosh HD and format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" not "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) case-sensitive". Then use CCC to copy everything back. Reboot.

I fixed this problem. I had to turn off the browser virtualization feature in Zone Alarm Extreme Security. This wiped out all of the Firefox settings, but I had bookmarks, etc. backed up. (answered by original poster)

  • Cannot print PDF with Adobe Reader 9.4.6 ?

I cannot print PDF files using Adobe Reader 9.4.6.  OS is VISTA.   Everytime I try to print a PDF file, I receive the following message - " Before you can perform print or related tasks such as page settings or printing you need to install a printer"  I have a printer installed and can print word, excel files, etc.  Cannot print any PDF files.  Help!

Had you managed to print the same files, or are you talking about files you hadn't attempted to print? Are these PDF files forms that you are trying to fill and print in Reader?

  • After downloading latest Reader software (11) on my Mac (OS10.7.5) I cannot print pdf files on either of my two printers. How do I uninstall and reinstall the software?  Adobe's instructions are only for Window devices.

After downloading latest Reader software (11) on my Mac (OS10.7.5) I cannot print pdf files on either of my two printers. I suspect corrupt software.  How do I uninstall and reinstall the software?  Adobe's on-line instructions are only for Window devices.

You can just drag the file to the trash. If you want you can remove  the pdf plug-in from the internet-plug in folder, but that should not be necessary to correct your problem.
