I've been trying to extend the range of my network with two Airport extreme's, (one main and one relay) using the airport admin utility on my mac book pro, but when setting up the relay base station it always returned an error of "fault with base station".
So I tried the same setup with my tangerine iMac and it took a couple of minutes! no problems at all.
I personally think it's a fault with the application, rather that with the computer?
Any thoughts anyone??

Here's a thought. What document format is your dissertation requirement? If it is expected in a Microsoft Word format, then you would be better served (without future surprises) to do your dissertation entirely in MS Word, and take advantage of Microsoft's Smart Art (Hierarchy category) graphics within Word.
Your work will look professionally done and not hand-drawn. You will create all work directly in a native Word document format, and not experience potential format issues when Pages attempts to translate its content to a non-native format. Dissertations are very important. Don't gamble. Enjoy Pages on less critical documents.

You can create a mailing list by using the "Groups" feature of Address Book. Simply select "New Group" from the File menu. Name the group, and drag the contacts you need into the group.
In Mail, open up Preferences (under the Mail menu), and click on "Composing". Then make sure that "When sending to a group, show all member addresses" is unchecked.
The auto reply is a feature that is better done on your mail server, as you Mac can only send an auto reply when it is on, with the Mail application open. If you use dot Mac, you can set up a vacation responder through the web, and you can leave your computer switched off.
If you really want to leave your Mac on when you are on holiday, you can set up a mail rule (Preferences, Rules).

No. There is no "USB Target Disk Mode".
Just so we're clear, when you start your Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM - holding T on startup), do you see a FireWire icon on the Mac mini's display? How can this same protection be accomplished with Intel-Macs? Intel Macs use a different fireware/boot process, so OFP above doesn't work. according to the apple article above, it can be done - but it doesn't explain how:
"Intel-based Macintosh computers can be protected by firmware passwords as well. The firmware in an Intel-based computer uses Extended Firmware Interface (EFI) technology"

I have a new mac mini and a logitech webcam, ilife 2011, even a professional external mike, if necessary. How can I create a live video to upload to YouTube and the like?

If you're talking about LIVE video (as in, people can see what you're doing RIGHT NOW), you can't host that on Youtube (yet), although there are applications (not part of iLife, though) to let you stream to a personal website. If you just want to record yourself, then upload it, sure, you can do so using iMovie 11.
This page explains iMovie's iSight import feature - provided your webcam is supported, the same should work for you.

How can I delete PhotoCD.plugin from CS3/Intel Mac

After using Photoshop CS3 for a few weeks I'm suddenly getting an error message about a plug-in not loading. When I check it's the Kodak PhotoCD.plugin. If I move the Kodak PhotoCD folder around - like to the Desktop or Trash - Photoshop finds it but doesn't load it.
I read posts on this forum about how it's not compatible with Intel Macs and if I wanted to use it I could run PShop in Rosetta mode. No thanks. No sweat. I never used it and would rather just be free of the Photoshop error message than keep it around for the rare possibility that I will need it.
Before I trash the Kodak PhotoCD folder and then empty the Trash, can someone tell me if that will make the Photoshop error go away?
Will trashing it create any problems with Photoshop CS3?

I can't see how trashing the plugin would cause any problem. According to this TechNote (see link below) it wasn't originally installed with CS3 anyway.

Can't play audio files from pre-Intel Mac

I have some audio files from my old PowerPc Mac (around 1998) which I'd dearly like to be able to hear again on my 2011 Intel G5 Mac (10.7.4).
The files were created by me on the old Mac using the basic sound recording software that came with all Macs. The files are just people speaking.
I have attached an image of the icon that is associated witho these files now. For some of these files, the properties show the file type as "QuickTime Player.app Document".I tried opening the files using Quicktime Player app, to no avail.
Other files are shown as being a "Unix Executable file" type.
I also have other files from the old Mac with this same icon. With those that I know were text files of some kind, I have just simply added .txt at the end of the filename and hey presto, the file is viewable again. I haven't been so lucky with the others.
I imagine also that its not so simple with these audio files but I wouldn't know what file extension to use as I haven't worked with audio files before.
Also, is there a way to keep these files in some generic format, to avoid this problem happening again in the future, as technology advances?

Can't create a WDS network

Hello,
I recently purchased a Apple Airport Express & Extreme and have planned to use WDS. Now according to this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4262), I tried and was successful up to "*Configuring a WDS main base station*" but only setting Airport Express as main base station.
But after that I was not able to follow the article as Airport Extreme doesn't shows "+*Participate in a WDS network*+". It only shows this two: http://cl.ly/4LGH
How can I continue further?
Notes:
1) I want to make one base station and another remote station.
2) Would prefer Airport Express to base station & Extreme to be remote station, but vice versa will be fine too.

Extending the network is not helping, while trying out the WDS way. The configuration & issues are as follows:
1) Using Extreme as main base station & Express as remote.
2) Both using same channel 1
3) Both have been assigned same name
But after all that,
Airport Express shows "WDS Error" , it says" No other wireless device were found". But the main base station shows on Airport utility.
Have no idea how to fix it.

Can't create a folder on a shared Mac

I'm using my mid-2010 iMac with OS 10.9.1, logged in with my username. I'm connected via sharing to my wife's 2006 MacBook Pro running 10.6.8, logged in with her username.
I can connect to the MBP fine. I can see folders on it, and open them. What I can't do is create a folder on the MBP from the iMac. The first thing that comes up when I try is my permission screen with my user name, with a message that I'm changing the Finder. I put in my password, and the next popup is a message saying that I don't have privileges to create the folder. I have Read & Write permissions for me set on the MacBook Pro all the way from the top level internal drivel down to the level I'm trying to create a folder in. I'm trying to create a folder within the Music folder on the MBP.
Anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

I figured it out. It's odd though. It was allowing me to see and operate the folders on the MBP using an older username from one of my prior OSs. My new Mavericks username is different than whet the permissions on the MBP were set to. Once I set up permissions on the MBP using the username that appears on my iMac Mavericks' in the User folder, it allowed me to create the folder. Strange though that it would let me connect and share without the new username.
NOT SOLVED. . It still doesnt work. I mistakenly created the folder in my own User Music folder on the iMac by mistake

Can,t create new events in ical on Mac book Pro.

This morning when I try to add a new event a pop up appears "This calendar was created by Mail. You can’t add events to a Mail calendar. Mail calendars only contain to do items created in Mail." Ical worked fine yesterday. I have a mobile me acc and can edit the online calendar but not the one on my laptop.

Called Apple fast track support and problem is resolved. User error, for some reason I had selected the wrong calendar - after selecting the proper calendar on the left sidebar I could create events. Apparently at some time I created a 'todo' mailbox. It had nothing in it and I ended up deleting it so it doesn't get selected again in error.
Took 15 minutes to connect with an ICAL specialist. Once connected received excellent support.

Can I create a ntfs partition on my mac hd

I am new to the MBP community and so far, I like it. It has taken some doing by I have it running my engineering software in a Parallels VM. What I would like to do is partition my 1TB SSD into two drives. One that stays my Mac OS drive and one that is formatted NTFS to be used as a data drive for my windows VM. Can I do this or am I dreaming?

You will need to install third party software on your Mac in order for it to write to NTFS.
NTFS is not native to Mac OS X and will cause problems with some application not being able to handles the storage on an NTFS formatted disk drive correctly.
My suggestion to format as HFS+ Extended with GUID portion mapping if it is only going to be used on the Mac.
If you wish to use on both then format as exFAT instead.
Instead of formatting one drive for both I suggest you get one drive for each platform. Format the Windows drive as NTFS and the Mac drive a HFS+ Extended with GUID partition mapping. That solution will cause you far fewer problems then any attempt to format a single drive for both platforms.

Can I install iMovie 5 on an Intel mac?

Hello. I recently got a new Mac which came with iMovie 09 installed. If possible........I would like to also install iMovie 5 on the same machine (as I have lots of 3rd party effects with that version). So I'm wondering is this possible and how do I do it? I have my old install discs (1 and 2) for OS 10.2 and 10.4 ........I'm not sure which disk contains the iMovie 5 App. and how I would go about just installing iMovie 5 without the other iApps? Would there be any conflict in having the 2 iMovie Apps installed on the same Mac? Thanks for any help.

Okay, this is odd. I have Snow Leopard which came with my newest iMac Intel desktop I purchased about six months ago. When I bought it, I imported all of my old programs from my old Mac which ran on the Tiger OS, including iMovie 5. I have been using iMovie 5 on snow leopard with NO PROBLEM for the last six months to edit and save footage, since I hate the new iMovie 09 and find it completely user unfriendly.
However, today I was editing all afternoon, no issue, and then this evening I opened my project to start working, edited one transition and the program turned into a white screen and shut down. Now I can't open any imovie files on it. I tried deleting and importing the program again as I had originally, and it still won't load. What gives? How did it run perfectly for months and finally implode?
I did run a software update yesterday, but I edited without issue for roughly five hours after that. I was only about an hour away from finishing my project, and now I can't even open it! Any ideas?
I've heard there is a program called Rosetta - which was not installed when I bought the system but apparently is on the discs? - which can run some of the old programs. Would installing this solve the issue?

Help! Can't open Appleworks documents on my Intel Mac.

Just bought a new Intel iMac to replace my old G4 iMac but have just had a shock discovering that i can only open (some) of my old documents which i copied to my external hard drive using Keynote and Pages, but not all of them.
That in itself is annoying enough seeing as they don't come as part of the operating system, unlike Appleworks did.
Any suggestions?
I can always plug in the old Mac but that defeats the object of buying the new one somewhat.

Thanks for the reply Brie Fly, thankfully i've managed to control my frustration and i've sorted the problem. I plugged the old mac back in to the external hard drive, copied Appleworks onto it, plugged the hard drive into the new mac and presto! it works. Obvious really, i think the initial frustration clouded my thinking!
