Bug? color profiles appear to be affecting layer masks

Hello,
I am wondering whether I should file the following as a bug?
We are using color profiles that adjust the white point.  When these color profiles are applied to the image we cannot properly paint into layer masks because we cannot access "pure white".  The brightest white we can paint with is a form of grey (aka, we cannot paint back full opacity in a layer mask).  This shows up in the color "chips" as only allowing the brightest value to be a light grey.  The only way to get around this is to turn off our color profile, paint pure white, and then reapply the color profile (which confirms my understanding that "pure white" is supported by the mask channel when a color profile is applied, we just cannot paint it that value when the profile is applied).
As far as I can imagine, color profiles shouldn't be applied to scalar channels like a mask channel, right?
This affects CS2, CS3, CS4, CS5 and CS6

Ok, I did one more test to see whether I can use the eye dropper tool to select a "pure white" color even if the color picker does not let me do that.  It turns out that I can.
So that is a work around...  I  am simply going to have to have an adjustment layer at the top of my layer pallette (but turned off) that has an all white mask.  Even when it is turned off, I can simply select it, use the eye dropper tool to pick a pure white, and then return to my mask channel of choice and paint in full opacity.
In the mean time, I think the fact that the color profile still affects the color picker when a mask layer is active might be considered a bug.  I'll probably report it as such.

  • SRGB Color Profile Appears Dull in All Adobe Applications

I just installed CS3 in Windows Vista Ultimate x64 on my PC and I have my working color space set as sRGB. The color is dull when opening documents in any Adobe application with the working color space set to sRGB. The color is fixed if I change the working profile to my monitor profile which is "Monitor RGB - Dell 2407WFP-HC"
When in the "Monitor RGB - Dell 2407WFP-HC" profile whenever I open an existing file Photoshop alerts me that the embedded color profile is different than my working profile (all of my existing files are managed as sRGB and on my previous computer the sRGB profile looked perfect.)
Photoshop I could theoretically live with but the same problem occurs in Acrobat and changing the "Working Profile" in Acrobat has no change on how the sRGB managed PDF is being displayed. The same PDF will look fine on another computer.
How do I get sRGB color to display correctly in Adobe applications and not look dull and muted?
Additional Information: The problem is still prevalent when accessing the computer with Remote Desktop which leads me to believe it has nothing to do with my monitor or the video card I am using.

    Bryan Nieman wrote:
    > I fixed it!
I don't think so. But at least you fixed one of several problems ... so the situation now is better but still not perfect.
    Bryan further wrote:
    > My monitor profile appears to be the culprit.
It indeed is. I also have the Dell 2407WFP-HC, and the ICC profile that came with it is rubbish. Don't use it!
When using sRGB as the monitor profile then Adobe applications will render colours the same way as non-colour-managed apps---i. e. everything else under Windows. So now you're having a consistent (but not correct) colour rendition across your whole system, inside and outside Adobe applications. This system-wide consistence is nice ... but problems may, and most likely will, arise as soon as you're trying to match the colour renditions of monitor and printer.
As Tom just has pointed out, the problem is the 2407WFP's actual colour gamut which is not sRGB; it is significantly wider than that. So printed colours will appear muted, or less vivid, in comparision to the colours on the (improperly profiled) monitor. In order to solve this issue, you should use a proper monitor profile in the Color Management tab in the Display dialog in the Control Panel.
This, in turn, leads to two problems. First---where to get a proper monitor profile from? As I said, the original Dell profile that comes with the monitor is badly wrong ... or at least mine is. If you, or anyone, know how to obtain a good canned ICC profile for the Dell 2407WFP-HC then please let me know. Second---as soon as you install a monitor profile that is different from sRGB (and then re-boot), non-colour-managed applications (notably Windows itself, and e. g. all kinds of web browsers) and colour-managed applications (e. g. all Adobe products) will render colours differently.
If you want both at the same time---i. e. consistent system-wide colour rendition *and* proper colour management---then better switch to Mac. There's a reason why most graphics pros prefer Mac over PC.

  • [Vista] No color profiles in Lightroom

I have a problem with printing in lightroom.
There are some more topics with printing problems, but not like mine.
The problem is that i would like Lightroom to manage the color profiles, but on the printing page, when i click the color profile field, i can only choose 'managed by printer' and 'other'.
When i click 'other', i get a popup screen, where i should be able to select a color profile, but this screen is completely empty, so there is nothing to select.
How can i make a color profile appear in this screen?
When i use printer managed, and select a color profile in my printer screen, i get very bad prints, thats why i want lightroom to manage the colors.
    PS: i have a HP D5160 printer.

    Hi Ronnie
I have exactly the same problem but using a HP 3210 all-in-one printer. HP doesn´t seem provide ICC profile for their printerns. So, I guess thats the reason no beeing able to view them i th manage by application dialog box.
I have serious problems getting acceptable colours on my prints from Lightroom 1.1 and 1.2 (no difference). No problem at all printing from Photoshop CS or Elements, getting fine printings.
When chatting with HP support they refuse to answer straight questions about ICC profiles and start blaming on Adobe applications instead. Really frustrating.
Really hope that someone finds an acceptable workaround.

  • Layer Mask Issue, please help.

    Hi,
My layer mask is not working, not sure what's happening. I'm using CS 4 . i want to use blending effect so i place the photos on a white background. I click layer mask on each photo, select brush tool brush on the photo but is not working, is either appear black or white color when i use the brush paint on it. If not wrong, the foreground color should be grey & white in layer mask function but it appear black & white instead. Please see the screenshot below. Please help, thank you

Hi, I will try explain your problem.
In your posted example we can see see that you have three layers in the layers panel.
On each one of layers, we can see, on the left side, that there is the Layer Thumbnail, that is a showing the actual image of your layer and then a Layer Mask Thumbnail (the white rectangle, on the right side).
A layer mask works as follows: you tell Photoshop to display or hide actual parts (pixels) of the layer with greyscale values. A white pixel on the layer masks tells Photoshop to show the image area at full opacity (non-transparent), while a black pixel on the layer mask tells Photoshop to hide the layer totally (0% of opacity.) Gray values will therefore show the image data partially.
But you are painting on the document, and you need to indicate Photoshop whether you want to paint on the image (what you did in your example, and you do not desire) or if you want to paint on the layer mask (what you want to do). This indication is called Targeting. It is done simply by clicking either on the Layer thumbnail, or on the Layer mask thumbnail of your layer. (Clicking different areas of a layer in the layer palette are different orders you give to the program). For instance, if you want to switch the layer you are hiding to another one, in order to paint on its mask, make sure to click on the layer mask thumbnail of the other layer in the Layers Panel.
In Photoshop CS5.5 and earlier, you will see that a layer or its mask is targeted because there will be three outlines around it: a black, a white and a black one again, like the actual layer data in the highlighted layer 0928 of your image. You should see those three outlines around the layer mask in order to paint on it.
In CS6, the target indicator is different, look in my image, we can see that the layer mask is targeted thanks to the white corners: I was then able to mask part of the black layer by targeting the Layer Mask in the layer panel, and then painting on the image where I want to hide the layer.
If you want to modify the actual layer (the photos, in your case), simply click on its thumbnail, and you are good to go!
    Hope this helps.

  • Photoshop CC layer mask on 3d model!

Hello Adobe. I have tryed photoshop cc and found one bug. I can't paint on layer mask on 3d model. I am always use photoshop for texturing 3d characters, and i use a lot of layer masks. Now you made awesome feature when i can paint on 3d model with normal map. But i can't do anathing because of the masks.
Hope you will fix it. Thanks.

Ok, thank you very much mr. Chris Cox.
As i understand i can use different layers and masks, in document with model, and then merge it and it will project on mapping texture. But i think that it a bit uncomfortably. Because, for example i have model of gun. I want to paint rust in some places of it. How i usually do it. I make new layer filling it all by texture of rust, creating mask, filling it black (hide) and then painting on mask by white color in places where i want rust. And i want do exactly same but on 3d model, because it more simple and comfortably.
But as i understand i need to create new layer and layer mask in document with model, and paint all there, and then merge.
In this case i have 3 problems.
    1. I can't rotate model before i will merge.
    2. My texture of rust for example will projected on texture not correctly with distortion (as compared if i will paste it on mapping texture)
    3. When i will marge this layer with layer mask i will lose my mask.

  • Bonehead layer mask question:  CS5

    I am new to photoshop.
I am running PS CS5 on a Macbook Pro.
I have a document with two layers.
The top layer is a black & white adjustment layer with mask.
    Opacity is set to 50%
The bottom layer is a colored background layer.
I don't know what the little square is called at the lower left of screen.
The background part is set to white and the foreground part is set to black.
When I select a brush and try to reveal some of the colored elements below nothing happens.
Do I need to activate any other settings to make this happen?

Good advice above, but one more thing (sorry for a very basic question):  Have you targeted the mask?  You have to click on it before you can paint on it.
Just reviewing...  With your Opacity at 50% your image will still have some color, and painting black on the layer mask will hide the effects of the Black & White layer and reveal more color.
If you're still having trouble, please capture your entire screen, save as a JPEG, and post it here using the little "camera" icon just above the edit box.  Usually people can home right in on what's wrong by seeing the various Photoshop indicators on the screen.

  • Trouble fading layer with layer mask

I'm trying to blend a photo with a background color. I select the new layer mask (selected), I select the gradient tool (color into transparent), and then draw a line to fade the image layer into the background later and it does nothing. Why isn't this working? Every tutorial I have looked at tells me to do these steps. How do I fix this??

I don't see any black on your mask. It should look something like this: Whatever is painted black on the mask will be masked on the layer, depending on the transparancy of the black.

  • Converting RGB to DNG without affecting color profiles

    Hi guys
I'm working with the DNG SDK in C++ for some time now.  I need to be able to take a raw RGB (not camera raw) and convert it into a dng file.  After playing arond with it for a few days, I realized creating the camera profile drastically affects the resulting dng image.
I can't seem to produce a dng file that was identical to the input source.  My picture appears very washed out and I end up using the adobe color profiler to try to bring the image back close to it's original color.
I'm trying to find a way to produce dng files without the need to affect the colors in any way, the resulting picture should be bit identical to that of the raw RGB input file.
I'm not even sure if I can do this considering the usage of the dng format.
    UPDATE
I've realized that my program is loading the RGB buffer into the fData of the stage3 image object.  I have a feeling I need stages1 and 2 but i'm unsure if I need to and if so, then i will probaby need a source DNG to produce those stage1 and stage2 unless I can get stage1 or 2 from stage 3 (appears it works vice versa).
I'm able to do the reverse (DNG to RGB raw) by extracting the buffer from the stage3 render.  but in this case, all the metadata has been filled in by the input DNG. However, going from RGB to DNG, I don't have the metadata to fill into stage 1 and 2.

My understanding of the JPG is only middling. I thought I understood that it uses anchor pixels and either a translation table of some sort or difference mapping, using 8 bits per piece of information.
If that were the case, surely changing the translation from CMYK to RGB would be fairly simple.
In this case, the usage is Ebay and they only accept JPG, PNG (and maybe BMP and GIF, I didn't look that closely), but require RGB. I was actually quite surprised to find that JPG allows CMYK since, as you say, anyone dealing with CMYK is going to be dealing with commercial printing and few people who deal with commercial printing would play around with JPG.
I always stick to TIFF or PSD for workflow, but JPG is popular for a reason - when it comes to web, JPG is the only format that can deliver manageable file sizes with full-screen or "large" images for web. Our top level banner photo is 2590x692 and needs to be under 400kb for sane download speeds. PNG couldn't touch that. Even with the aforementioned 1800x1200, PNG is nearly 2mb, while I can maintain very decent quality with a 500kb file with JPG that works well for 'zoom in' type usage.
So there's no way around JPG. It's just annoying that the first person to touch a random selection of the pics was primarily an Illustrator user and saved *some* of the pics in CMYK mode.
It's like that old story about the farmer who didn't want anyone to steal his watermelons, so he cleverly posted a sign "None of these watermelons are poisoned", only to find a note the next day saying "Now, One of these watermelons is...".
Far more work to fix 'some' of the images compared to just doing it right the first time.
But then again, for workers like that, if you can't trust them with an easy job, you could hardly trust them with more complicated jobs...

  • Bug report: [layer mask] editing colors

Sometimes it appears that the white/black color combination that is automatically selected in layer mask editing may override the selected color combination outside of layer mask editing.
    Example:
    1) Open Photoshop.
    2) Select two colors: white/white.
    3) Create two blank documents, each with an empty Layer 1.
    4) In one document, add a layer mask to Layer 1. The colors should have been automatically switched to black/white as the layer mask is selected.
    5) In this document, use the gradient tool to fill the layer mask with black/white.
    6) Switch to the other document, and notice that the color selection is again white/white.
    7) In this other document, use the gradient tool to fill Layer 1. Notice that the layer is filled with black/white instead of white/white as selected.
    Tested on: PS CS6, Windows 7, 64-bit.

On further testing I think the issue may not be directly related to layer masks at all.
Basically the issue is that the Gradient tool colors don't update to the 'default foreground/background colors' in cases where it seems that they should.
One example of such a case (as illustrated in the original post) is when the Gradient tool keeps the black/white color combo used for a layer mask in a previous document after switching to the current document where a non-masked layer is targeted and the default fg/bg colors have correctly reverted to white/white.
    Example:
layer mask targeted in doc1 - notice synchronised Gradient and default fg/bg colors
after switching to non-masked layer in doc2, Gradient is still black/white although default fg/bg colors have reverted appropriately to white/white
Bug or not, it's something I wanted to point out as it seems inconsistent.

  • Aperture 3 embedded color profile bug still unsolved (worked in Ap 2)

RE: Aperture 3.x cannot display images with certain color profiles embedded. This bug was reported
on March 11, but is still unsolved and basically makes Aperture 3 unusable for my large collection
of scanned slides which have a special color profile embedded. Viewer and sometimes Browser turns
    either black or go haywire.
    What is it about:
When you scan slides with a scanner, you can generate a special color profile so that the image
looks good and you can then embed this profile in the scanned tiff and jpeg images. Most pro applications honor the embedded profile and display the image correctly. In our case, we
generated a special profile named Nikon-LS5000 (it was tested for correctness!):
    1) It worked fine in Aperture 2.x
    2) It never worked in Aperture 3.x
    3) It does not depend on the Operating System (i.e, the bug manifests itself in 10.6.2, 10.6.3 and now in 10.6.4)
    4) It is no question of a special Mac Model (the bug shows on iMacs, ibook profs, and iMacs 2010)
    5) It is irrelevant whether you start Aperture 3 in 32-bit or 64-bit mode
    6) It shows with jpegs or tiffs, no matter
    7) Preview.app or Photoshop CS4 display the images correctly!
    8) If one changes the embedded profile via PS CS4 to sRGB or ProPhoto, Aperture 3 works (but the
image then has radically different colors - so no solution!)
    9) The conclusion is that something affecting the processing of (some?) embedded color profiles has radically changed from Aperture 2 to Aperture 3.
I put a few jpegs with embedded color profiles and screenshots of how Aperture 3 behaves on the Picasa web:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/114939413495021552399/TestapertureBilder#
you are invited to download the jpeg- images and retry in your ownAperture 3 Library.
Maybe together we can find out what causes this bug which is very annoying for any
    serious photographer.

I have put the test material on another server - you can download a
zipped folder (Aperture3profilebug.zip) of all test images AND the color profile from
    https://depot.uni-konstanz.de/get/txau69
with any browser. (The problem was that the Picasa Software seems to strip the color profiles from
the test images, so I had to put them on another server. It will remain there until July 1).
    Regards and thanks for helping

  • Quicktime 7.1.5 Update Fixes Color Profile Bug

You'll be glad to know that the latest Quicktime update, 7.1.5, that was released yesterday fixes the bug that prevented iPhoto 6.0.5 from importing or using/editing image files that did not have a color profile embedded in them.
However, users using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements should still set those applications to manage and embed an RGB profile in files so that when printing prints or ordering books/prints/calendars/cards ordered thru Apple they will have an accurate color rendition of what you see on the screen.
    Do you Twango?

Yes it is. I ran several files thru PS, removing the profile, and they imported into iPhoto OK. I just ran another test (no profile in the files, edited in PS and saved w/o profile, iPhoto set to not embed a profile) and it worked as advertised. The files were editable by iPhoto and viewable in the full screen mode.
Interesting in that the resulting modified file ended up with a profile embedded even though iPhoto was set not to. Haven't figured that one out yet.
The bottom line is that it works as advertised.

  • Display color profile bug when using the fast account switch from a guest account to an admin account (and vice versa)

    Hey,
I'm sometimes using a guest account on my MBP (unibody late 2008 2,4 GHz Core2Duo, 4GB DDR3 running OSX 10.9.4 on an OCZ 128GB SSD) for a more distraction-free working space and I noticed right away a disturbing bug:
Using the fast account switch (upper right hand corner of the screen) in Mavericks from an admin account to log into a guest account (or vice versa) produces, after the fancy rotating cube animation, some strange distortion of the desktop background happens (lasting approx. 2 sec.). After that the color profile of the display is changed into an usable but ugly one, which is disturbing while working with pictures. When checking the color profile in the pref pane, the standard "display" profile is said to be active (it's the one I use) but still the colors aren't the same. Selecting another profile and re-selcting the desired one doesn't fix the problem. Switching back to the other account with the fast switching leaves the colors altered. Logging out and deleting the guest account seems to the problem for the remaining admin account. Rebooting  and logging in to either of the accounts (admin or guest) from the standard account selecting page at booting shows the normal color profile.
Is it a general bug or is their anything a can do to prevent this problem (other than never using the fast switching)?
    Thanks for your advice.

I cannot agree more with your comments! What a way to frustrate your customers!
I have been having an issue with iCloud on Mac where it kept asking me for my password and sometimes would, sometimes would not continue to access my iCloud mail. Today it just refused to connect to iCloud mail.
I looked in the Mail, Contacts and Calendars in my MacBook Pro settings and discovered that 2 iCloud accounts were present. One with my original Apple ID (a gmail address) and a second with my new iCloud email ( an @me.com address). Having deleted the second account, using the new @me.com address everything is working fine.
So from my viewpoint when I moved over to iCloud I was asked to sign in with my Apple ID (the gmail address) then to create an @me.com address. However, as far as I can see all sign ins to the new @me.com account on Macbook, iPhone and iPad need to be done through the old Apple ID (the gmail address). Is that confusing and just plain crazy???
Further, after creating the new @me.com address I soon found out that this is apparently now forever bound to my old Apple ID and cannot be changed. I mean why can't I delete the iCloud account and start anew with a different @me.com address??? Also, as everybody using iCloud must create an @me.com address why on earth can I not get rid of my old gmail address and have my entire Apple ID accessed through the new @me.com address? Creating a whole new Apple ID will not solve this as we are unable to transfer purchases between accounts.
Apple products are great IMHO, but they do seem to not think things through in a very big way sometimes......

  • Color Picker appears when quitting Premiere Pro CC

    Anyone else having this issue...
Sometimes when I quit out of Adobe Premiere Pro CC, the Color Picker appears.  After I close the Color Picker, Premiere quits as normal, but sometimes I have to close the Color Picker 3 times before it goes away.
It doesn't always do it and I can't figure out what triggers it (besides quitting Premiere).
I'm running it on Windows 8.  Premiere Pro CC v7.0.1 (105).  I only started noticing it in this most recent update of Premiere Pro CC.
    Thanks,

This bug landed on my plate recently for investigation, and today I managed to nail down one simple repro case: In AE, copy one or more Solids or Adjustment Layers to the clipboard (or a comp containing solids/AdjLayers), then right-click in PPro's Project panel, Timeline, or Effect Controls panel. I get one instance of the color picker for each solid copied to the clipboard.
A workaround for this repro case is to copy anything other than a solid or adjustment layer to the clipboard before right-clicking in PPRO.
Edited to add: I encounter the Color Picker only the first time I right-click in PPro after setting focus on the app. Also, once an AE Solid or AdjLayer is on the clipboard, this bug can be reproed each time PPro regains focus, regardless of which app had focus last.
If the Color Picker is popping up for you in cases that do not fit the scenario I've described, please send me a private message; I'll want to follow up to isolate your case.
