BUG: Extremely Large files 'hang' saving in CS6

We occassionally work with extremely large .PSB files for billboards and environmental graphics, anywhere from 5-10GBs.  We noticed that the files would 'hang' and not save while we were working on them.  The save percentage indicator would get to 83% and just stall out.  We'd have to completely restart our machines and use CS5 to finish the projects.
Hope this helps.  Thanks--CP

Pete, someone else reported something like this a week or two ago, I'm sure of seeing it.
Chris,
Have you left one saving for a very long time?
What happens if you disable compression in Preferences - File Handling?  Do you find the file completes the save?

  • Bug - CC6 FLA files not compatible with CS6 (copypaste fail)

I tried submitting this through https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform but as usual it gave me a generic error when I hit send. Who knows if anyone's listening there anyway.
I have Flash CS6 and am working with an artist who has Flash CC6. I can't copy symbols from the files he sends me.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Open this file in Flash Pro CS6: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rqnwx2itn3m2ilj/Game%20Store.fla
    2. CTRL+A
    3. CTRL+C
    4. Create a new blank FLA
    5. CTRL+V
Results: Only part of the object is pasted
Expected results: All of the object should appear
Workaround: If I first "save down" the files he sends me to CS6 or earlier format then reopen them, the copypaste bug goes away. Distressingly, this feature has been removed from CC6, but luckily it is still present in CS6.

    Hi Sarah.
This is a known issue and is happening due to the characters '<>' present in your symbol names.
Please find more details/workaround about this problem here : http://nipunasthana.wordpress.com/2013/12/10/flash-cc-cs6-compatibility/
    Thanks,
    Nipun
+You can also try the attached file with the removed incompatible characters from your file.

  • Copying large files hangs at "less than a minute"

    hi,
When copying large files around my intel mac mini system the Finder appears to freeze just before the end - when the dialog window is telling me that there's "less than a minute" left. It doesn't happen ALL the time, just enough times to be a real nuisance.
Killing the finder doesn't help - I need to power off to regain control of the Finder.
This recently started to happen after I opened up the mac mini to add more memory. Not sure if this is related - everything else seems to be ok. I have a mixture of USB and Firewire external drives - the mac mini is used to hold all my HD camcorder files and process the iMovie rendering to disk.
I'm running the latest version of os x with all the updates.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Hello! It's likely a firmware issue with an external
drive. Check the ext drive's site to see if there's a
    firmware upgrade. Tom
Thanks for the reply Tom. I've downloaded a firmware updater from the Lacie site, and I'm apparently uptodate. However, I also have a USB Seagate external drive, but the Seagate site seems to only provide support for Windows. grr.
Is this a known problem with certain drives/firmware?
    thanks,

  • Large file when saving as PDF

If I save a text doc with graphics as PDF, the resultant file size is huge, even when the original graphic is very small. For example, if I paste in a graphic of only a few 100k, after saving to PDF the document can exapnd to several Mb! Saving exactly the same doc from Word or Ragtime does NOT do this, the file ends up being more or less the size of the graphic plus a bit for the text. Is there any way to prevent this? I HATE have to use Word!
    Thanx,
    Paul

I'm not running 10.3, but if I remember correctly you Select "Print" then choose "ColorSync" where it says "Copies & Pages" then Choose "Reduce File Size" from the "Quartz filter" options.

  • Can Photoshop CS5.1 open files created/saved in CS6?

I work in a collaborative environment. I've upgraded to CS6, but those i work with are working in photoshop cs5.1. Will they have problems opening files i create or save in CS6?

I don't know that I can offer a better long answer, nor do I know of any published list of things you can save in a Photoshop CS6 document that won't open properly in an earlier version.  I have tried a few things myself, like creating shapes, text, etc. and found that Photoshop CS5 sees them all just fine.  But it's not hard to think of things that wouldn't work, such as putting a brand new filter as a smart filter in a document.
Just using the cool new features would not necessarily net you incompatibility.  For example, doing a Content Aware Move or one of the new blurs just manipulate pixels, and at the end of the day the layer will just have pixels on it, which every version of Photoshop has known about all along.
Things like recording brush strokes in an action and trying to run the action on an earlier Photoshop would yield incompatibility, because older versions wouldn't know how to play such brush strokes back.
There is a "Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility" setting in the File Handling preferences, and the implication is that others will always be at the very least able to open a flattened version of the document, but I'm not sure that covers every case of individual incompatibility between recent versions of Photoshop.  I've never had occasion to test it out thoroughly.
Maybe one of the Adobe people can speak to this in more detail.
Do you still have a copy of Photoshop CS5 installed?  If so, and you're not sure about whether your PSD file is going to be compatible, you could of course try it yourself to be sure.

  • Photoshop CS6 crashes on large files

I'm using/testing Photoshop CS6 for our company. We are using CS5 for 2 years with no issues. But PS CS6 crashes on lareg files. Say above 100Mb, with some layers. When saving the file, PS just closes with no message. Windows than says PS stopped working. And in the Eventviewer there is a error event.
I'n running no extra pluginns, just CS6 standard, fully up to date. Windows 7 32bits, 4Gb of RAM, 1 harddisk, Mac mini with i7, fully up to date.
CS5 never gave issues with the same files.

    Ok, found the log.
But first I tried the reset option. But that didn't solf it. It still crashes on large files when saving. I also disabled the retsore-option. But no solution.

  • Are the brushes in Photoshop CC faster than CS6 - still need to use CS5 for large files

    Hey,
Are the brushes in Photoshop CC any faster than Photoshop CS6.
Here's my standard large file, which makes the CS6 brushes crawl:
    iPad 3 size - 2048 x 1536
    About 20-100 layers
A combination of vector and bitmap layers
Many of the layers use layer styles
On a file like this there is a hesitation to every brush stroke in CS6. Even a basic round brush has the same hesitation, it doesn't have to be a brush as elaborate as a mixer brush.
This hesitation happens on both the mac and pc, on systems with 16 gb of ram. Many of my coworkers have the same issue.
So, for a complicated file, such as a map with many parts, I ask my coworkers to please work in CS5. If they work in CS6 I ask them to not use any CS6 only features, such as group layer styles. The only reason why one of them might want to use CS6 is because they're working on only a small portion of the map, such as a building. The rest of the layers are flattened in their file.
Just wondering if there has ever been a resolution to this problem...or this is just the way it is.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Working with Large files in Photoshop 10

I am taking pictures with a 4X5 large format film camera and scanning them at 3,000 DPI, which is creating extremely large files. My goal is to take them into Photoshop Elements 10 to cleanup, edit, merge photos together and so on. The cleanup tools don't seem to work that well on large files. My end result is to be able to send these pictures out to be printed at large sizes up to 40X60. How can I work in this environment and get the best print results?

You will need to work with 8bit files to get the benefit of all the editing tools in Elements.
I would suggest resizing at resolution of 300ppi although you can use much lower resolutions for really large prints that will be viewed from a distance e.g. hung on a gallery wall.
That should give you an image size of 12,000 x 18,000 pixels if the original aspect ratio is 2:3
    Use the top menu:
Image >> Resize >> Image Size

  • Error importing clip in iMovie, large file still exists somewhere

I'm running the newest version of iMovie and lately I've tried to import large clips from my camcorder only to result in an "Error" when importing.  That's pretty annoying on its own, but to make matters worse, those extremely large files exist somewhere and I have no idea how to find or delete them.  They don't exist in the iMovie Event folder that I created for them.  Are they in some temporary folder?  Because I've tried quitting iMovie and restarting my computer, but those 180GB that have been eaten up on multiple attempts are still missing.

I have the same issue so I called apple care and they were absolutely no help at all. 10.8, iMovie 11 (9.0.7), late 2011 Macbook Air.

  • CS6 very slow saving large files

I have recently moved from PS CS5 to CS6 and have noticed what seems to be an increase in the amount of time it takes to save large files. At the moment I am working with a roughly 8GB .psb and to do a save takes about 20 minutes. For this reason I have had to disable the new autosave features, otherwise it just takes far too long.
CS5 managed to save larger files, more quickly and with less memory available to it. Looking at system resources while Photoshop is trying to save, it is not using its full allocation of RAM specified in performance preferences and there is still space free on the primary scratch disc. The processor is barely being used and disc activity is minimal (Photoshop might be writing at 4mb/s max, often not at all though according to Windows).
I am finding the new layer filtering system invaluable so would rather not go back to CS5. Is this is a known issue or is there something I can do to speed up the saving process?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the quick replies.
Noel: I did actually experiment with turing off 'maximize compatibility' and compression and it had both good and bad effects. On the plus side it did reduce the save time somewhat, to somewhere a little over 10 minutes. However it also had the effect of gobbling up ever more RAM while saving, only leaving me with a few hundred mb's during the save process. This is odd in itself as it actually used up more RAM than I had allocated in the preferences. The resulting file was also huge, almost 35 GB. Although total HD space isn't a problem, for backing up externally and sharing with others this would make things a real headache.
Curt: I have the latest video driver and keep it as up to date as possible.
Trevor: I am not saving to the same drive as the scratch dics, although my primary scratch disc does hold the OS as well (it's my only SSD). The secondary scratch disc is a normal mechanical drive, entirely separate from where the actual file is held. If during the save process my primary scratch disc was entirely filled I would be concerned that that was an issue, but it's not.
Noel: I have 48 GB with Photoshop allowed access to about 44 of that. FYI my CPU's are dual Xeon X5660's and during the save process Photoshop isn't even using 1 full core i.e. less than 4% CPU time.

  • TimeCapsule (and AirPort extreme too) hangs on large file transfers

    Greetings,
I got a following problem. I had install AirPort connected to my router with copper and extend network with TimeCapsule. TimeCapsule have two USB drives attached, AirPort - one USB. When I am transferring a large file, in a magnitude 2-3Gb or multiple simultaneous transfers of smaller files to/from those USB drives, depending on which drive I am using the AirPort or TimeCapsule get crashed. For plain user it is looks like as of sudden, data transfer stops, led in a front keeps green, and I can not reconnect to the drives. If I powercycle TC or AES everything get back to normal. Are there anyone else experiencing the same issues and if yes, what would be solution ?
    Thank you.

I think we have tried almost every combination of disabling Large Send Offload, TCP offload, IP SEC Offloading, VMQ and Receive Side Scaling possible - in the various places there are - although I will be quite honest - as there are 3 places to do this
for each Server (the related physical and virtual NICs on the HV Server, and also the NIC in the VM) it is possible we may have missed an iteration...
During our testing we have noticed that the symptoms of the problem gets worse the higher the transfer speed is. For example if you transfer to the VM from a desktop with a 100Mbs NIC, there will be subtle lag and a transfer speed of say 10 or so KBs ,
if you use a device with a 1Gbs NIC, you on average achieve 50-70 KBs transfer speeds and the higher the number, the worse the GUI / Server locks up (although the transfer completes just fine).
We also tried throttling the bandwidth via the 2012 GUI - to see if that helped, but none of the changes we made seemed to work, and we did not have time to try the powershell way of doing this.
We did replace one of the VM's NIC with a legacy one as part of our testing today, and now data transfers to the VM from a PC with a 1Gbs NIC run slower at around 30-35 KBs and the are no noticeable GUI freezes, although during the large transfer
it looks like 1 in every 30-40 packets is dropped in a continual ping that runs during the transfer period.
We have done a lot of cable replacing today (out of diligence) but there seems to be no noticeable issue. We also tried and older NC380T dual port NIC we had available and used the standard driver Windows offered instead of an HP one, but the problem
was identical no matter which NIC we used.

  • Airport Extreme, Airdisk, and Vista - large file problem with a twist

    Hi all,
I'm having a problem moving large-ish files to an external drive attached to my Airport Extreme SOMETIMES. Let me explain.
My system - Macbook Pro, 4gb ram, 10gb free HD space on macbook, running latest updates for mac and vista, external hard drive on AE is an internal WD in an enclosure w/ 25gb free (its formatted for pc, but I've used it directly connected to multiple computers, mac and pc, without fail), AE is using firmware 7.3.2, and im only allowing 802.11n. The problem occurs on the Vista side - havent checked the mac side yet.
The Good - I have bit torrents set up, using utorrent, to automatically copy files over to my airdisk once they've completed. This works flawlessly. If i connect the hard drive directly to my laptop (macbook running bootcamp w/ vista, all updates applied), large files copy over without a hitch as well.
The Bad - For the past couple weeks (could be longer, but I've just noticed it recently being a problem - is that a firmware problem clue?) If i download the files to my Vista desktop and copy them over manually, the copy just sits for a while and eventually fails with a "try again" error. If i try to copy any file over 300mb, the same error occurs.
What I've tried - well, not a lot. The first thing i did was to make sure my hard drive was error free, and worked when physically connected - it is and it did. I've read a few posts about formatting the drive for mac, but this really isnt a good option for me since all of my music is on this drive, and itunes pulls from it (which also works without a problem). I do however get the hang in itunes if i try to import large files (movies). I've also read about trying to go back to an earlier AE firmware, but the posts were outdated. I can try the mac side and see if large files move over, but again, i prefer to do this in windows vista.
this is my first post, so im sure im leaving out vital info. If anyone wants to take a stab at helping, I'd love to discuss. Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
Just noticed the other day that I am having the same problem. I have two Vista machines attached to TC w/ a Western Digital 500 gig USB'd. I can write to the TC (any file size) with no problem, however I cannot write larger files to my attached WD drive. I can write smaller folders of music and such, but I cannot back up larger video files. Yet, if I directly attach the drive to my laptop I can copy over the files, no problem. I could not find any setting in the Airport Utility with regards to file size limits or anything of the like. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

  • Copying large file sets to external drives hangs copy process

    Hi all,
Goal: to move large media file libraries for iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie to external drives. Will move this drive as a media drive for a new iMac 2013. I am attempting to consolidate many old drives over the years and consolidate to newer and larger drives.
Hardware: moving from a Mac Pro 2010 to variety of USB and other drives for use with a 2013 iMac.  The example below is from the boot drive of the Mac Pro. Today, the target drive was a 3 TB Seagate GoFlex ? USB 3 drive formatted as HFS+ Journaled. All drives are this format. I was using the Seagate drive on both the MacPro USB 2 and the iMac USB 3. I also use a NitroAV Firewire and USB hub to connect 3-4 USB and FW drives to the Mac Pro.
OS: Mac OS X 10.9.1 on Mac Pro 2010
Problem: Today--trying to copy large file sets such as iTunes, iPhoto libs, iMovie events from internal Mac drives to external drive(s) will hang the copy process (forever). This seems to mostly happen with very large batches of files: for example, an entire folder of iMovie events, the iTunes library; the iPhoto library. Symptom is that the process starts and then hangs at a variety of different points, never completing the copy. Requires a force quit of Finder and then a hard power reboot of the Mac. Recent examples today were (a) a hang at 3 Gb for a 72 Gb iTunes file; (b) hang at 13 Gb for same 72 Gb iTunes file; (c) hang at 61 Gb for a 290 Gb iPhoto file. In the past, I have had similar drive-copying issues from a variety of USB 2, USB 3 and FW drives (old and new) mostly on the Mac Pro 2010. The libraries and programs seem to run fine with no errors. Small folder copying is rarely an issue. Drives are not making weird noises. Drives were checked for permissions and repairs. Early trip to Genius Bar did not find any hardware issues on the internal drives.
I seem to get these "dropoff" of hard drives unmounting themselves and other drive-copy hangs more often than I should. These drives seem to be ok much of the time but they do drop off here and there.
Attempted solutions today: (1) Turned off all networking on Mac -- Ethernet and WiFi. This appeared to work and allowed the 72 Gb iTunes file to fully copy without an issue. However, on the next several attempts to copy the iPhoto and the hangs returned (at 16 and then 61 Gb) with no additional workarounds. (2) Restart changes the amount of copying per instance but still hangs. (3) Last line of a crash report said "Thunderbolt" but the Mac Pro had no Thunderbolt or Mini Display Port. I did format the Seagate drive on the new iMac that has Thunderbolt. ???
Related threads were slightly different. Any thoughts or solutions would be appreciated. Better copy software than Apple's Finder? I want the new Mac to be clean and thus did not do data migration. Should I do that only for the iPhoto library? I'm stumped.
It seems like more and more people will need to large media file sets to external drives as they load up more and more iPhone movies (my thing) and buy new Macs with smaller Flash storage. Why can't the copy process just "skip" the parts of the thing it can't copy and continue the process? Put an X on the photos/movies that didn't make it?
    Thanks -- John

I'm having a similar problem.  I'm using a MacBook Pro 2012 with a 500GB SSD as the main drive, 1TB internal drive (removed the optical drive), and also tried running from a Sandisk Ultra 64GB Micro SDXC card with the beta version of Mavericks.
I have a HUGE 1TB Final Cut Pro library that I need to get off my LaCie Thunderbolt drive and moved to a 3TB WD USB 3.0 drive.  Every time I've tried to copy it the process would hang at some point, roughly 20% of the way through, then my MacBook would eventually restart on its own.  No luck getting the file copied.  Now I'm trying to create a disk image using disk utility to get the file from the Thunderbolt drive and saved to the 3TB WD drive. It's been running for half an hour so far and appears that it could take as long a 5 hours to complete.
Doing the copy via disk image was a shot in the dark and I'm not sure how well it will work if I need to actually use the files again. I'll post my results after I see what's happened.

  • ITunes hangs when syncing large files to network attached drives, ideas?

I've done a lot of research on my problem and have come up blank so far. This is my setup and situation. I use a macbook pro and iTunes 10, but since I use a small SSD, I do not have much room to keep iTunes media on my disk. So, I use an external USB drive, formatted HFS+ J, accessible over my AirPort Extreme as a networked drive and am trying to keep my media there by setting my iTunes Media folder location to my "/Volumes/<drive name>/iTunes/iTunes Media" under iTunes>Preferences>Advanced. For the most part this works, but there are a few gotchas that are making this setup unusable.
The biggest problem is if I try to sync a large file (for example a 250MB app) with iTunes to my networked storage, the culprit almost always being a large iOS app in Mobile Application folder, iTunes will hang with the spinning color wheel, and in the toolbar shows "Not Responding". This also hangs the Finder. After this situation, I pretty much have to force quit everything and reboot my machine to get the Finder and iTunes back to health.
So, I thought that I would try keeping the iOS apps on my local drive and just move my music out to a network drive. But iTunes doesn't allow any granular configuration of the sort (big FAIL on Apple's part), and I've read up that iTunes does not play nice with symbolic links or else I would keep the iTunes Media location set to my local drive and symlink the Music folder out to my network drive.
So, given that 1) I don't have enough space to keep everything local, 2) trying to keep everything on NAS causes my machine to fail when syncing my iPhone or trying to consolidate my iTunes library because of large file transfers over the network making thing go insane, and 3) iTunes doesn't easily let you manage your library with symlinks, any ideas on what I should do?

i assume you are connecting wirelessly to the AEBS, correct ?
as a test, run an ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN ports of the AEBS (you might want to turn off airport on your machine), then try again.
    does the problem persist ?

  • Photoshop CS6 keeps freezing when I work with large files

I've had problems with Photoshop CS6 freezing on me and giving me RAM and Scratch Disk alerts/warnings ever since I upgraded to Windows 8.  This usually only happens when I work with large files, however once I work with a large file, I can't seem to work with any file at all that day.  Today however I have received my first error in which Photoshop says that it has stopped working.  I thought that if I post this event info about the error, it might be of some help to someone to try to help me.  The log info is as follows:
