Bug - Fill Light slider causes app to hang

Lightroom release v1.0
When I slide the fill light slider to the right I get the hourglass and have to force quit the application.
Using a Dell Insprion 9300 laptop, Pentium M chip 2.0 ghz, 1MB RAM

Do you have an NVIDIA graphics chip in your laptop? If so, disable the nView tool and try again.

Camera Raw 4.0 Fill Light Slider Not Working

Hi,
Just installed Photoshop CS3, and I'm having an annoying problem.
When using Camera Raw 4.0, all the sliders work smootly except for the Filli Light slider. Its the only slider that is almost impossible to adjust via dragging the slider via my mouse. Of course, this is probably my most frequently used adjustment.
The Photoshop CS3 was a clean install, directly from the CD provided by Adobe.
There was never any Beta version installed.

The Fill Light adjustment is the single most processor intensive of all the controls in Lightroom. When you first move the slider it causes Camera Raw to generate a large blur copy of the image and that takes a bit if time. During that initial bit if time, fill Light will NOT be as responsive as the other controls in Lightroom...it only takes a moment but if you are trying to make adjustments while CR is building the mask, you'll get jittery results. The key to using it is to move the adjustment off zero, pause a bit while the mask is being generated and then start fine tuning the adjustment. After that initial move off zero is done, it should be about as fast as most of the other controls-and no, you DON'T want CR to auto-generate the mask for every image by default, it would make Camera Raw much slower overall.

Equivalent of 'Fill LIght' slider

Hi all.
I'm just getting used to Aperture after years in Photoshop and loving it.
One slider I'm missing. The Fill light slider in CR4.1 does a great job of opening up dark shadow details without affecting the blacks.
What's the best way to do the same thing in Aperture? I've tried using both the Shadow/Highlight and the Quarter Tone levels sliders but wondered if anyone had any problems/successes with these or other methods?
Any other suggestions?

Shadows in the shadows/highlights brick is the equivalent adjustment. They're the same thing, they're just named differently in the two programs.

Runtime.exec() causes app to hang

Hello all, I'm having an issue with the Runtime.exec() and I'm hoping someone in the forum can shed some light on it for me.
My application currently includes the capability for my end users to run a variety of reports, all of which are written in SQR (BRIO reporting language). Since my application is in Java ( and all the reports were written for a previous application), I use the Runtime.exec() call to launch the SQR viewer application. The problem I'm having is this: When I run the code below in my development environment (using a front end framework from Oracle (JDeveloper)), everything works fine. When I deploy my application to a jar file, the application runs fine until the code below is called. At this point the application hangs terribly and my CPU usage is maxed out by my app. The process for the report is created but is unable to garner the necessary resources to run because my application is using them all. If I kill my application, the report process then runs as expected.
Why would the same code run fine in development but not when deployed to a jar file?

So you either tried adding a reader for stdout, or you're sure that nothing is produced on stdout? And you're sure it's not expecting anything on stdin?
You say your app runs fine up to that code, and then eats all the CPU right? Sounds like a spin lock. One possibility is that it's something like this: br = bufferedReaderForStdOut;

while ((line = br.readLine() == null); Not that I expect that you have precisely that in your code, but I suspect the problem may actually be a spin-lock that precedes the code you've posted. I don't see anything obviously wrong with what you have, so if there's a problem in your code, it's probably in what you haven't shown.

Save as Photoshop PDF causes app to hang

Every time I try to save a file as a PDF on Photoshop, the program hangs and I have to force quit eventually. Oddly enough, it works fine the next time I try after restarting Photoshop, but it consitently hangs the first time every time. So when I need to generate a PDF, and have to save in another format (Tiff) , save as PDF, let it hang, force quite, restart PS, open the Tiff file , then save as a PDF.
ANyone else finding thsi issue? Any suggestions?

it works fine the next time I try after restarting Photoshop, but it consitently hangs the first time every time.
I am a little confused. Photoshop will hang after save tiff and then save PDF? Save PDF can only succssful at the first save after restart? Could you please provide detaied steps and a screen recording will be best, and send your steps, test files, OS info to: [email protected]? I will log a bug if necessary.

Fill Light algorithm

Hi all
I find the fill light slider in lightroom and ACR 4 to over increase saturation creating an unpleasing effect...
... of course my monitor is calibrated and I have everything color managed the right way
I also tried dxo optics pro, ***I LIKE LIGHTROOM BEST*** but... their fill light algorithm gives much more natural effect, so please talented adobe engineers... fix this in next releases

-Yes shadow/highlight in photoshop is more powerful and can give the exact result one is looking for with some practice
But lightroom is a standalone program aimed at users that doesn't want to much bother with complicated tweaks, I'm not complaining about, I just find that this particular adjustment doesn't match the quality I was expecting
I tried it with a raw file taken by my s3 pro (wich has 14 bit/channel raw format and much more dynamic range then other DSLRS) and I find dxo optics pro giving more pleasing results right away regarding this particular slider
I think that with all the controls we have in lightroom one will be able to achieve the look he's after, and I'm happy with so many tweaks, I particularly like it smart cropping, TAT, the vibrance slider and the facilitated curves controls are really nice and so far unmatched by any other software I know
But still IMHO fill light slider could me much better, trying this particular function in dxo confirmed what I was thinking

Visible artifacts caused by Fill Light in Lightroom

With the LR V1.0 I noted in many cases very strange looking highlight-shadow edges. This was very pronounced in same cases, and never appeared with RawShooter in similar situations. After having done some experiments I think that one culprit is the Fill Light algorithm. Please take a look at the following example. Its a quite ordinary 8Mpix Canon CR2 file with an ordinary landscape scene. I soon I use some "fill light" to bring up the shadows on the mountain, strange "band of pixels" appears along the edge of the trees and the sky. RawShooter has a similar Fill Light algorithm, which does not case such side effects.
At first I thought that too strong jpeg compression might be causing this, but that I saw this in the Lightroom screen before any conversion.

Before, I start, I'm going to be entirely objective here. You are having a genuine issue here and I'm approaching from that point completely. You've documented it well, which helps in following it.
Both Fill Light and Highlight recovery use internal masks to work. This means that there has to be an edge somewhere. When dealing with sudden contrast jumps like in your image, then it is possible to get the edge showing. I'm looking at 2 images here on my machine. Both of the same scene. A ruin against a blue sky. One underexposed a lot, the other mildly underexposed. Over 30 of FL gives me an edge like yours on the underexposed image, but not until 60 with the mildly underexposed image. The edge in the first image still looks okay until I start adding Recovery. This is probably because the Masks have the same edge point and are boosting each other, making it look much worse.
FWIW, the Fill Light in Lightroom is not based on any RSP code, so I suspect that a like for like figure comparison is moot, much like comparing F or C scales on a degree by degree basis.
Is there an issue? Not so much on reasonably exposed images, but for underexposed images, I do see an edge when pushing Fill Light in regions of high contrast . It is exacerbated by using Recovery.
It has been mentioned before by me in the past.

I always have to chuckle at this question. Aperture introduced a much, much more sophisticated tool, Highlights and Shadows, in Aperture 2, if not 1.5. Now that Lightroom has finally caught up, everyone thinks that it is something new.

Fill light presets for PV2012

I don't claim that these will match PV2010 fill light. What I claim is, these applied after import will provide a fill light - like effect similar in strength to fill light of the same name. I used to start many of my images with fill light, and these are a way to get to similar starting points faster.

Well, whilst it may well be a bug, it still can be used to create some interesting images. Try setting the Black level slider to the same value as Fill light one - this creates an interesting stylized effect. This however does not work on all the images.
Look for Paris photos (colour ones) here http://www.aletan.com - these are examples where Fill light and blacks were both upped to 100.

Safari causing full-system hang

For a while now I've been getting the SBOD irregularly in Safari, since 3.x if I remember right. I've got some time off work at the minute so I'm finally looking into this properly, and here's what I've found:
There seems to be two separate conditions. The first happens on loading some, but not all web pages, causes a lengthy hang in which the entire system (even invoking Dashboard or Spaces) becomes unresponsive. In the console this accompanied by an entry similar to the following:

I suspect this means some vestigial adobe product has messed my system right up. I used to use CS4 but have long since removed it. I also have Air and Flash (the current gala beta) installed. I have had fontbook validate Helvetica Neue and check all fonts for duplicates - if external disks are plugged in at this time they all spin up.
The other case is when downloading a file through clicking a link or alt-clicking a link (right-clicking a picture and saving it to the downloads folder does not cause this behaviour), and is accompanied by this much sparser line in the console:

The files themselves can be opened, moved and copied without incident and at regular speeds, so I doubt disk corruption. I've also performed a few full clone/restores on my boot disk with no effect. My initial thoughts were to blame a long-forgotten folder action that sorted downloads into different places (including a network share, if present), but disabling folder actions has not helped.
So, any ideas? I'm fresh out.

A workaround for the font-problem seems to be to turn off ATS - it's in FontBook.
The second issue still eludes me.
Things I have tried:
Trashing ~/Library/Safari/
Trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari*
Cleaning out every vestigial trace of anything suspect I had on my system (google keystone, logitech control centre, SIMBL, The Spark, iStat Menus, folder actions)
Interestingly, the issue is not present for the guest user, so it IS something wrong with my user account. I just can't figure out what.
Yes, making a brand new account would fix all this, providing I'm meticulous about testing the issue as I move /Users/Old/ into /Users/New/, but I'm kind of loathe to give up. It's surely something really simple!

IPhone iOS 8: Tapping on photo icon in messages app causes app to crash

Issue (?ios 8 bug?): Tapping on photo icon in messages app causes app to crash. Present in ios 8.0, and also still in ios 8.0.2. iPhone 6+ 64GB.
I just wondered if anyone else has been having this problem.
Initially it worked great. Tapping the photo button next to the text box in message should bring up a menu with your latest photos and other sharing options. However, after the first couple of days, tapping the button brought up the menu, the phone freezes, and then after a few seconds the photo app crashes.
Deleting most of my photos restored the function, but after another couple of days (and some more photos) it started happening again so I think perhaps it is related to the number of photos. After about 5-10 photos it loads the menu very slowly and its quite buggy. After 20+ photos it wont load the menu at all without freezing and the app crashing.
My iphone 6+ was set up as a new phone (not restored from back-up).
I hope this is some kind of bug that will be fixed in ios 8.0.3, but wondered if anyone else has the same problem or has any solutions?
My workaround at the moment is just to go the photos app and either copy and paste the photo into a message, or share the photo via the photos app.

I have this same issue with my 128 gb 6 plus. I've tried restoring as new on a few occasions, but to no avail. I did notice while my pc was synchronizing my apps, that the feature worked fine a few times until the synchronization was complete. I seriously hope that the numbers of photos limits one's use of the feature, because i purchased the 128 gb 6 plus so that i could keep photos at my ready.
Has anyone heard of a solution yet?

Verizon - Iphone 6 plus - phone app getting hanged while doing 3 way conference call

I am using VOLTE in IPHONE 6 Plus with IOS 8.1 and when I am trying to do 3 way conference: I called person A and then I add person B, then I see the following issues:
I press Merge calls and calls are merged but still merge calls & Swap icon is enabled.
When person A/B hangsup, the phone app is hanged and call is ended but it still shows that phone is ending.
If I end the call, still the phone app is hanged and it shows it is ending.
I cannot do any dialing in the phone when phone app is hanged and literally, I have to restart the phone only.
Any other person cannot call me and it goes to voicemail.
All the above issues were happening in IOS 8 and IOS 8.0.2 also. I did reset network settings too but it did not help.
Can someone give an idea for any solution.

Thank you so much for those details. I want to make sure that you are able to use the feature without any issues. One thing that we might want to check out is that all the people that are a part of the 3 way calling is in the Verizon 4G LTE network. This could cause some issues if they are not. Copying in Preview causes app to crash

All of a sudden copying in Preview causes the app to hang briefly then exit. Anyone else having this problem and any ideas on a workaround for copying .pdf text?

It depends on how the exe deals with the arguments. Some do honor escape characters, some not.....
Afaik, there is no difference regarding the System Exec in development environment vs. exe. But it is possible, that these are executed using different user rights?

Reloading Plug-In Page causes browser to hang during stress test on IE & NS

When an applet page is in the process of being loaded using the Java Plug-In and a second request is made to reload that applet or a new applet several times in succession, the browser hangs. Is there a work around for the Java Plug-In version 1.3.1.

APP STORE HANGS

I notice since last update that the app store hangs forever and the rainbow circle stay on and then it crashes.
