Bug fix request: aspect ratio filtering

When I upgraded from LR 2 to LR 3 I imported the old catalog as Jeff Schewe described in the LL video tutorial. Now I cannot filter the images from this catalog by aspect ratio. At first I thought this problem was only confined to smart collections, and was informed by Ian Lyons that it is a known bug. Afterwards I discovered that it also applies to normal metadata filtering. The images are not cropped, and the dimensions are displayed correctly in the EXIF. I have read that a workaround is to make virtual copies of the images in question and filter those, but this is not really an elegant solution. Would be great if there was a better solution!

Thanks Gabriele.
There are two kinds of people in the world, and there are two kinds of plugins...
People:
- Those who are willing to use plugins.
- Those who aren't.
Plugins:
- Those that are a fine substitute for missing native functionality.
- Those that aren't.
In my opinion, DevMeta falls somewhere in between:
- When metadata is up-to-date, its indistinguishable from native functionality, except that numeric metadata acts like text...
- Unfortunately, keeping the metadata always up-to-date is where DevMeta has its limitations, compared to native.
Its my hope that Adobe will continue to do a combination of improved native support, and improved plugin support...

  • Bug Fix Request - To Admins

Hey there Logic Pro forum Admins,
I've got a small bug fix request for you. I'm using Logic Studio to lay down VO, and I ran across a potentially distressing bug. When you are recording in the arrange window and you click on the playhead, it erases your record take. It doesn't just remove it from the arrange window and place it in the bin, it erases the take completely.
In my case, it was good that I caught it early on in a take. But imagine if I had clicked the on the playhead after a 5 - 10 minute take, or perhaps longer? We all know that time is money, particularly in VO sessions. The actor would have had to redo the take, and I would have had to pay the VO director and actor accordingly.
To be entirely clear, it wasn't as if I had purposefully clicked on the playhead while recording. I was actually trying to rename a marker and accidentally hit the playhead instead. The effect this has had on my session is that I'm now deathly afraid to do anything (including cutting previously recorded regions or renaming them) while rolling. I'm sure you can appreciate my dilemma. Yes I could simply not click on the playhead, but you know how it is in the heat of a session. Things need to happen fast, and your clicking accuracy isn't what it normally is etc.
Anyway, in future iterations of Logic Studio, it would be really really nice (not to mention heart attack preventing) if the user could disable this 'feature'. Please please please fix this!
    Kind regards,
    -Justin

I'm not sure if what you're experiencing is a bug. I just tried this. While recording, I hit the playhead, and it simply stoped the recording where it was when I hit it, although the session continued to play. Try it yourself and watch the transport - the record button will go off, but the play will continue. When I did it just now, it DID NOT erase the recording that was in progress. Everything that had been recording until I hit the playhead was still there. This action makes sense to me. If the playhead gets touched and jumps to another part of the project, the action of recording SHOULD stop.
If you're really concerned about this, I'd do some experimenting. Just sit down and start recording, and see what happens if you hit the transport, or if you do other actions you're wanting to do. Again, everything that had recorded until the moment I hit the playhead, was there. If your ENTIRE RECORDING gets deleted when you hit the playback, then something's wrong with your Logic. Are you on 8.0.2?
Why are you feeling the need to edit while recording, anyway? Especially when you're recording important stuff??
On a sidenote, you're not going to reach anyone from Apple on this forum. You need to go here:

  • Still no fix for aspect ratio problems

I was hoping this new version would fix the aspect ratio problems with importing clips other than in the DV codec, but alas, it was not to be.
My problem is that if I import a clip that is 720x486 (non-square pixels, uncompressed), iDVD doesn't interpret it correctly. It places the clip with small black bars (like a little letterbox) at the top and bottom of the screen, then scrunches the image vertically, sprinkling it with stairstep artifacts.
What's frustrating is that versions up to iDVD 4 didn't have this problem and imported clips in any codec beautifully. It's been a known issue for a long time.
Furthermore, Apple's solution is to convert the clip to a self-contained DV movie (hello, disk space!), which is also undesirable because of the quality loss and poor colour compression. After the latest QuickTime upgrade, exporting in DV doesn't work, creating a clip that is half-field and blocky.
Argh! This is a real problem because many of us use iDVD to make screeners for clients, and it looks unprofessional. It's also a very inaccurate and somewhat useless tool when the clips are of clean lines, titles, and smooth, solid graphics, which show the stairstep effect the most.
I'm at my wit's end having exhausted all other suggested solutions (and please don't tell me to use DVD Studio Pro instead). Anyone else come up with a fix or have the same issue?
Previous discussion on this issue here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=204675&tstart=0

Sorry, but the answer is - for professional use, use
    DVD SP
No, it is absolutely not the answer. EVERYONE I know in my circle of professionals uses iDVD for banging-out quick screeners of TV spots, film clips, dailies. In fact, it's one of the main reasons they added OneStep to iDVD. DVD Studio Pro is for authoring commercial-level DVDs, with a learning curve and pricing structure appropriate to that.
I'm not going to spend time learning DVD Studio Pro just to do quick one-offs, for one, and it's overkill anyway. Not only that, but it costs a lot more than iDVD.
The inablity to import a QuickTime clip -- on Apple software, no less -- is not cool, especially since it doesn't seem an excessive thing to ask (and it used to encode just fine). It's a very basic task considering everything else iDVD has been written to do, and crosscoding and re-encoding video is a basic functionality in QuickTime.
I'm not asking iDVD to prove the existence of dark matter in the universe; I'm just asking it to play a QuickTime movie properly. Which is what it's supposed to do.
There was a work-around, supplied by Apple, but it no longer works for me, so that's why I'm asking what worked for others.

DV format is 720x480 but designed for rectangular pixel to preserve 3:2 aspect ratio.

  • #1 feature/bug fix request

I love safari, but there is one thing that has been urking me forever. I always use as many hotkeys in my applications as possible, this way I can work way faster without having to use my trackpad. In safari I use a ton of tabs, and I can use the hotkey Apple-Shift-Arrow to toggle between tabs. HOWEVER, the toggle doesn't work if anything form-releated is selected on the screen, (i.e. an input text field) and this is really annoying because input textbox forms are focused by default, (example browse to www.google.com). So i'm forced on many, many occations to use my trackpad to go to the top of the screen and clicking though different tabs.
So if i open up a tab, then browse to google.com, the Apple-Shift-Arrow hotkey doesn't work anymore and i can't hotkey through my tabs.
Apple can you please fix this! Please enable the hotkeys when a form field is focused. This small bug-fix would definately increase my productivity
    Anyone else experience this?
    Cheers,
    -Jordan

cmd-shift-arrow doubles as line-select in text fields, so disabling it would lose that functionality.
why don't you just pick a different hotkey for selecting tabs in system prefs.?
edit: cmd-} and cmd-{ might also work (i can't really remember).

  • Fixing different aspect ratios in FCP 4

    I need help!!
I shot a wedding yesterday using 3 different cameras, all with different 16:9 aspect ratios. I used a panasonic, sony and cannon. The sony and cannon has the anamophic squeze while the panasonic has the letterbox outline. Is there a way to pull back and slap the footage shot with the sony and cannon in a letterbox frame to match the panasonic?

  • Mouse-Over Labels sometimes truncated (bug fix requested)

    Hello,
In both Xcelsius 2008 and all subsequent fixes, the Mouse-Over labels are sometimes truncated.  It happens when I have a text category that could be translated as a number.  For example, if I name a category "1E" ("1E" is a type of problem that our department is tracking) then when I hover the mouse over the pie chart it will just say "1" as the category name.  "1A", "1F", etc work which would lead me to believe that it perceives "1E" to be the same as the exponential 1*10^1, which is why it is showing "1".  It happens even if the categories are specified as text.  I think this is a bug that should be addressed in the upcoming SP2.

    Hi,
What version of Xcelsius and LiveOffice do you have in place?
Also, did you actually raise an SAP ticket and recieve an confirmation from Support Engineer (via ADAPT) that a developer will look into it last year? Please note, nothing will get fix unless it is logged under the proper channel.
From what I can see, this is the only relevant ADAPT similar to yours (KBArticle 1403226 - See below). Although this doesn't mention anything about Mouse-Over Labels. Hope it helps.
    Symptom
Character 'e' which behind the numbers (like 1e) will be lost after refreshing Live Office objects
    Reproducing the Issue
Create a table in SQL server, add some columns with nchar(10) type
In this table, add some records with value like '1e', '1389e'
Create a Universe based on this table
Create a Webi report based on this Universe
Create a Live Office object based on this Webi report
Create an Xcelsius dashboard, and use Spreadsheet Table to show this Live Office object
Choose 'refresh on load' or add a refresh button to refresh this connection
You wiil find the character 'e' which behind the numbers (like 1e) will be lost
(For detail information about the reproduce steps, please refer to attached doc with some screenshots)
    Cause
The issue has been identified and logged under Problem Report ID ADAPT01296829 (Xcelsius side) and ADAPT01290988 (Live Office side)
    Resolution
Apply fix packages at both Xcelsius and Live Office sides to fix this issue:
    Live Office FP2.3 or SP3
    XCelsius X5 LAFix2.0.3 or Xcelsius SP3

  • Thank you for fixing the aspect ratio for 14.1 Dell Notebooks

All the way up until the last build, it has been rather difficult work around the fact that the windows 8.1 pro or enterprise would allow for full resolution on an E6410 i5 8GB RAM, (was not able to use the full screen of Visual Studio or Expression; which
was an external monitor that worked quite nicely.  But I did wonder why my OS was stating that below 1080 is the recommended and only setting.
In the last build the snap function did not work at all especially across two monitors.  Now it works great!
Only have intermittent issues with wifi but a ipconfig /renew and ipconfig /flushdns works fine for the meantime.
Thank you, we are putting it on our phones and our Surfaces, as well as beginning the certification to place it on the eco tabs from OEM China.

Hi Nick...thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.

    NTSC pixels are never square.
NTSC is 720x486, even when it is Anamorphic.
You shouldn't be using an already letterboxed master to make an Anamorphic version. Get the master that was made before the letterboxing stage.
When you make an Anamorphic DVD it should display as 16:9 full screen automatically on widescreen TVs.
The same DVD will automatically letterbox on 4:3 TVs.
Um yeah...duh. That's exactly what I was trying to explain in the preface of my question. I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear...all these things you mention are the reasons I'm putting together a list of the technical specs of the DigiBeta I need so I can have them send that instead of the stupid letterboxed version.
Look, I'm sending this request to some intern at their offices in England, asking for a master with which I can make an Anamorphic DVD. They already sent me this master, which as you and I both agree is an idiotic asset to use for these purposes. As such, I was hoping for advice on a more precise way of requesting the master that I need than asking for "the master that was made before the letterboxing stage." Upon reflection, perhaps I'll just do that. If you or anyone else has a suggestion about something I should add to my request that would improve the odds of them sending the tape I need, please repond. Thank you!
BTW, It's been a long time since anyone has responded to something I've written or said as though I'm an idiot. I remember now that I don't really like it. (Moving along...)

  • How to change DV/DVCPRO video to 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio in Final Cut Pro X?

I shot some DV video footage on a Canon XL2 in 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio mode. I captured it on a Firestore and imported it into Final Cut Pro X, and it is now being displayed in an incorrect standard 4:3 aspect ratio.
How can I change the aspect ratio of the video within FCPX once I've imported it?
I've tried playing with the Spatial Conform setting for the video file, but that keeps it in a standard aspect ratio and fits or fills the video into a different aspect ratio. So that's not the answer.
I've tried an old trick I used when working with DV widescreen video and iDVD, but this process doesn't fix the aspect ratio in FCPX. Here's the article for your reference:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2179
Did Apple forget that DV/DVCPRO video--although standard def--can be displayed in 4:3 or 16:9? It seems to force it to 4:3.
    Thanks.

    @daguerratype
The Spatial Conform is one of the things I tried. Unfortunately none of its settings fixed the aspect ratio. When I choose "Fit", it simply shows it as 4:3 and leaves left and right black borders on a 16:9 timeline. When I choose "Fill", it zooms the 4:3 video and chops off the top and bottom parts.
    @Thomas Emmerich
This is a decent workaround. Fortunately my clips are named in such a way that I can easily drop them all in the timeline and do a Command-F (Find) to search by clip name, highlight all of them in the search results, then use the Inspector to modify the properties of all the clips at once. I have to change X-scale to 133% and Spatial Conform to "Fit", and now at least it fits the 16:9 timeline properly.
Thanks to both replies. I still hope Apple adds a way to fix the clip in the Event browser so that I don't have to do this workaround.

  • HD aspect ratio problem....

when capturing HD footage to HDV tape, the pixel count is 1440x1080. Final cut knows to fix the ratio back to a 16/9 aspect ratio to look like 1920 x1080.
THE PROBLEM: After using color on a DV clip and sending it back to Final cut, final cut will not fix the aspect ratio, and the clip looks scewed/stretched vertically. Is there a setting that keeps this from happening? Can someone tell me what I should do so when I fix color on a HDV clip, it will show up in final cut the way it would before it is sent to color? thanks,
    danny

I'm used to very large file sizes, so what are my options? Are my clips from tape best treated with compressor, thus far it isn't my experience, or do I just stick to final cut sequence settings. it's for only a few parts in a project that is chiefly captured uncompressed 422 through a black magic interface. Would having both compressed and uncompressed clips be bad for messing with the sequence settings? thanks again for your initial answer.

  • Ipod Classic aspect ratio?

I just got my Ipod Classic last night and was adding some movies to it but some of them couldn't be added, so I converted most of them (which im still doing) and put the ones done on my Ipod, but when I go and watch them, the sides of the movie are cut off, even  the ones that I didn't have to convert are cut off as well... is there anyway to fix the aspect ratio on the Ipod or make it widescreen because this makes the movies completely unwatchable.

On your iPod head to Videos > Settings and adjust the Fit to Screen option.  Any luck there?

  • How to fix an error in sequnece setting (aspect ratio)?

    Hi,
I have been working for a while on a project in CS4. I have created a sequence in it with an aspect ratio (AR) of 4:3 - worked for hours on it - but I should had the sequence created instead in 16:9. I realised it a bit too late...
So how do I fix it?
Apparently amending the sequence setting for AR cannot be done - please let me know if there is any way of doing this.
Someone suggested editing the PRPROJ file of the project - but when I opened it I was unable to detect under the sequence name (I found a few entries with it) where I can easily change the sequence to 16:9.
So then I found people suggesting I copy/paste all the assets from the sequence into a new one that is correctly configured with 16:9. When I did this - CTRL+A and Copy, then paste into a new sequence in the same project - it copied all the clips and I think also all the transitions. But the key element that it did not copy over were all the changes I have done to the sound - I have been editing via the sound mixer (in Write mode) the sound, and then also made changes to the master track volume levels. These were not copied over.
I really don't want to have to do the mixing all over again. If someone can explain how I can fix the problem in any way I would be most thankful.
While I am here asking - another 2 small questions that have been bugging me:
How I can copy and paste volume keyframes from either the master track or a clip and apply it on another clip/section of the clip that would be very helpful. This would for example be useful if I am able to find a certain volume level that I would like to apply to the desired section without the need to sit and "record" (using the Write function) those settings on the desired area. If there is any means to apply the properties on audio track this way - that would be really useful and time saving.
A best practice hint: when you try and create a sound level for a project - what PC volume level setting do you set in your PC that you use as a benchmark by which we then work out the sound level that would be created in the project? Obviously if I push my PC volume al the way up I would probably mix my sound in the project too low. And if I set the PC volume too low - than I would probably be setting the overall sound level too high and get distortion. As the movies I created would be burnt onto a DVD - what is the volume level on the PC (if there is any means of establishing a standard volume) that I need to match first before I go and figure out what level of sound the finished DVD would have? Of course I can work on say a 50% and then apply gains and volume increases based on that 50% of the max sound my PC plays out. But that sounds pretty much like a random setting and not optimised for other devices.
    My system:
    Windows 7, 32-bit
    CS4, v. 4.2.1
This looks like a fairly basic question but I am unable to find a good answer to it...
Many thanks to the person who shows me how this can be done without me going crazy over the need to start all over again...
    Eroka00

    Hi Ann,
Your tip saved me a lot of time indeed....!
So I created a new sequence, made sure it was 16:9, copy pasted all of the assets, but then had to do the following:
    1. Copy/Paste Attributes for all the video clips (these do not transfer);
    2. As you suggested used the whole of the old sequence as a nested sequence in the new one, eliminating the video altogether.
I still had a nagging issue that the project would not render or export well - but that turned out to be an issue with rendeiring large files (the video was an uncut clip of almost 10GB, andother of 6GB). Splicing these into 10 minute segments and rendering them separately did the trick.
It's ben amlong Xmas weekend and endless hours spendt on this project. Yaikes!
    Thanks for the workaround idea!

  • What is the fix for constarined crop aspect ratio changing when the image is rotated

I've migrated through LR 3, 4 and now 5 up to 5.4. I have been able to set a crop aspect ratio and synch pictures to that ratio as well as other editing selections. When I edit a particular picture and rotate it , the aspect ratio has stayed constant - to the value originally selected.I've never had a problem and it has consistantly worked properly even through last weeks editing activities. Now, when I set aspect ratio and then rotate, the aspect ratio really changes. If I go back and reset aspect ratio and select Done, it seems to be ok. This issue seems to perform wrong with portrait orientation but not in the landscape orientation. I have uninstalled LR, gone through registry cleanup, reinstalled LR, claened up the registry but nothing gets better. I do note that the settings aren't totally removed as the reinstalled software wants to pick up where I left it prior to uninstalling. As best as I can tell, all of my settings and preferences are the same as last week. It works on last weeks folders but not on new ones.
I have now seen many forum write-ups about this problem but have never found any solution. Help - I can't go through life cropping and straightening images sideways.

Here is a thread that I think addresses this problem.  There were MULTIPLE bugs in the crop tool when Lr5.0 came out, probably due to adding the Upright Tool, but they are slowly getting worked out.  Maybe this one will be fixed in Lr 5.5

  • Problems with aspect ratio metadata filtering, am I doing things wrong?

    Hi,
I tried to filter out all my pictures in a collection that has a portrait aspect ratio but LR is doing it all wrong.
As you can see, there is a mix of landscape and portraits even though portrait is filtered.
I tried to look at some of my other collections and see if this was an isolated issue but found that I have the problem here and there.
    Found this example:
Even though the dimensions in the EXIF-info on the right says 3456x2304, LR thinks that the picture is square.
Could I be doing something wrong here or could I somewhere help LR on the way or is it a bug of some sort? I'm using LR 3.3 on a Mac with Mac OS 10.5.8
    Thanks in advance,
    -Jimmy

Many thanks. Didn't think of that but I cropped all the wrong pictures to landscape and then did a reset to the crop and that did the trick. There were almost 4000 pictures wrong so I'm glad that I could use the auto-sync feature to do it faster.
