  • CS6 Could Not Save "filename" Because File is Locked

For many years I have been edit photo montages in Premiere Pro. When I would find a photo that needs retouching so I would open Photoshop, retouch the pic, save it, and the new image would magically appear on the PPro timeline. But in my CS6 suite, I get the error message "Could not save "filename" because file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file".  And this only happens when PPro is still open, regardless of where the CTI is on the timeline, or which pic on the timeline is selected. I never had this problem with any other versions of PPro and Photoshop. I don't want to shut down PPro everytime I need to retouch a pic.

That sounds like you've found a bug in PPro where it keeps the files open and locked when it shouldn't.
Unfortunately, you posted in the Photoshop forum where we can't help much with Premiere.
You probably want to post in the Premiere forum: http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premierepro_current

  • "Could not save a copy because the file is already in use..."

I have read previous discussions of this issue, but nobody suggested a solution. Sometimes when I use the Save As command to save an open file with the same name as an existing Photoshop file that is not currently open, I get the dreaded message: "Could not save a copy because the file is already in use or was left open."
When this happens, I have to save my open file using a different filename, then change the name in the Finder after manually deleting the original file with that name. This happened occasionally in Photoshop CS3, and is now happening more frequently in CS4. If no one can offer a solution, can someone please tell me if there is a way to officially submit a bug report? The simple truth is that Photoshop costs way too much for a well-known problem like this one to be hanging around version after version. Adobe really needs to fix this and I'd like to tell them so. Thanks!

I've run into this and I'm convinced it's not Adobe. Whenever I've gotten around the problem it's often something from Apple that got in the way.
I use a simple workaround when Finder/QuickLook isn't letting go of the file. First use a free utility like TinkerTool or Onyx to turn on the Quit command in the Finder. Whenever the Finder gives you trouble, if closing the Finder window in question doesn't solve it, just do the ol' Command-Q. It's a little faster (and maybe safer?) than force-relaunching the Finder. This usually releases files for me when all else fails; it also often cures the annoying "can't eject the volume because it's in use" messages when you've already quit every program you can find.
There's the question of why Photoshop and not others; I'm not an engineer but I think the sheer size of Photoshop files is a factor. In one instance I noticed that quicklookd was using a lot of RAM, and QuickLook has been implicated by an earlier post in this thread. It isn't unusual for a Photoshop file to be very large compared to other types of documents. It's possible that when QuickLook hits a large Photoshop file, and it does its normal thing of generating a big preview for it, it could get tied up reading that huge image long enough to block another program. Sometimes it seems like QuickLook just hangs on them. When it happens, you can try looking at Activity Monitor to see if something like QuickLook, Spotlight, or some other program is using an unusual amount of CPU or RAM.
Apple Mail (at least in 10.5) is another major offender by the way. If you attach a file to Apple Mail it will hang on to it as "open" even after you remove the attachment. Other programs will not be able to write to the file that was attached or formerly attached. Nothing short of quitting Apple Mail will make it let go of the file. You'll notice it when you delete a JPEG, PDF, Word doc (definitely not just Photoshop) attachment because you realize you need to make a change and attach it again. Attempting to export an updated one over the old one is blocked until Apple Mail is quit.
In my experience I think what Chris says is true.

  • Could not save....because the file is already in use or was left open

I have been using PS since V5 and have never experienced this problem which continues to crop up in PSCS3. I get this stupid error message "Could not save....because the file is already in use or was left open." Even if I save as a new file which does not exist anywhere in the galaxy, I will get the same &^%$!! message. I have gone to the folders and made sure read only was unchecked in properties. I have lots of disk space and four gigs of high-end RAM. This is particularly frustrating when you are using this software to make a living and a fifteen minute project becomes a 45 minute project. I like everything about CS3 but want to pull my hair out by the roots when I pay for the best photo editing software available and it continues to screw me out of money. Adobe, are you out there? Can anyone help???
    Thanks

Thanks and please excuse my prosaic explosions.

Same error intermittently on different files. Windows7 64bit CS4. Saving a file in Photoshop - working from local hard drive - and got the file in use can not save error. We tried changing the name, saving as a different file type with no success. I closed absolutely every application that was running and then stopped all non windows processes from Task Manager and still file in use.
I was finally able to save by choosing "NONE" for the preview instead of Tiff 8-bit in the save options.
The bug is in Photoshop and it is putting a file lock on the preview file that it creates and then not alowing any save with the preview option checked.
After saving without a preview we could close PS and reopen then open the saved file and resave with the preview selected. Closing PS unlocked the preview file.

  • Could not save because the ICC profile description is invalid

I'm getting this error whenever trying to do a "save" or "save as" from Photoshop CC. I've tried converting to different color profiles but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Even if I create a new blank document and try to save it, I get the same error message.
I'm on a Mac running 10.8.5. Doing a search for the exact error message has come up empty. Previous versions had a similar error but it occurred upon opening a file, not saving. So if anyone has some thoughts, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Save PDF not Save As

I open a PDF file (Any Type of PDF file) into Acrobat reader 10 or 11 and add a comment. If I click the "Save" button the "Save As" dialog pops up. Why? Tried Adobe Support but they do not support any free products. I told them that I have a paid subscription as well but wanted to know why this didn't work. I told support I think it is a bug but he just referred me to a bug report form.
Does anyone have a work around for this issue. The person I'm helping doesn't have Acrobat (Full) but needs to be able to add Comments and just save the file - Not Save As

Sabian - I've tried all types of PDF files on 3 different computers, 2 of which were 32 bit XP machines and 1 that was 64bit Windows 7. The 2 - 32bit machines on XP had Reader 11.0.07 and the 64 bit Windows 7 had Reader 10. I still get the same result. So would it be possible for you take a snap shot of the PDF security properties and maybe a few screen shots of your preferences?
Let me clarify - You opened a PDF file, Made a comment and click the save disk icon or click "Save" under the file menu? And it just saved the document with no Windows Explorer window popping up with "Save As" and the ability to change the file name etc.
I really can't figure it out.

  • Imessage will not activate iOS8

okay so basically i've brought an iphone 6 on contract (vodafone) i wanted to keep my old number so i used their "keep my number" service online, ever since ive done that my imessage will not go through or any messages for that matter, imessage is stuck on the good old "waiting for activation" any tips? i have tried the reset all network option and i have tried to manually reboot it. nothing

I'm having the exact same issue but with 3... I don't think it's the network though. Mine were working no problem for me initially (before iOS8.1.1) and now they won't activate. From what I have read, this is a bug within the update and Apple need to fix this ASAP

  • IMessage settings not saving

I recently upgraded to Mavericks.  In iMessage, when I go to View, Messages, then click "show names" that setting does not save when I exit out of the program.  When I open iMessage again, it has reset to "show pictures."  I haven't had this problem before.  How do I get my desired setting to save?  Thanks.

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Export presets do not save file naming template

I don't know if this is a bug or a missing feature so I'll post here first, then submit a bug report if necessary. I have done a search first but not found anything relevant.
When you create an Export Preset, LR does not save the File Naming Template you want to use with it, the template is always whichever you used last. Seems a bit odd because you might want to use different filenaming conventions depending on what you are doing with the export, eg. different names for proofs, web galleries, etc.
However, if I am missing something, please me let me know.
    Kind regards,
    mcv

That's what I see also but what I meant was that two 'options' down, you can choose what 'File Naming' template to use, eg. Filename, Custom Text (x of y), etc. These don't get saved with your Export Preset, they stay the same as the last one you used. At least on my Windows version.
I don't know how you do enclosures like you did, so I'm linking to the images instead to show you what I mean.
While I was taking screenshots of this I noticed some other peculiar behaviour. It seems that the preset DOES actually save the filenaming template but doesn't show you this. I'll explain as follows:
Here I have a template for full size JPEGs, I invented some custom text and that's why the preset says 'edited'.
    http://www.mcvphotography.co.uk/imgs/gallery/4295_168305550246ba83c417104.jpg
Here I have changed the preset but the File Naming template appears to have stayed the same, though it does show a 'preview' (01.jpg).
    http://www.mcvphotography.co.uk/imgs/gallery/4295_56540006946ba83c532d43.jpg
However, this is odd - I moved the mouse over the custom text box and the words instantly changed to the words I had last used (Castafo is the name of a band). I had not saved the name of the band in the template.
    http://www.mcvphotography.co.uk/imgs/gallery/4295_117289421846ba83c645133.jpg
Lastly, I tried another preset and again it appears the template is the same but the 'preview' is correct. Mouseing over did not change any text.
    http://www.mcvphotography.co.uk/imgs/gallery/4295_168262086846ba83c76e439.jpg
Pretty weird and inconsistent behaviour, don't you think? The software that is, not me - I already know about me(!)
I always keep an eye on the preview anyway so no big deal but do you have any thoughts Ian, or anyone else?
    Thanks,
    mcv

  • "Could not save this file"

Fireworks CS5 Version 11.0.1.7 -- Just installed Mavericks on my iMac and now when I am working on a png and want to export it as a jpg, I click File>Image Preview, choose my settings and click Export. Then I get either a prompt saying "Could Not Save This File. The file was not found." OR "Could not save the file. The file is already open in another application." However if I continue as if I did not get a prompt, the file does get saved and exported. Anyone know what might be going on?

This is a bug, the file is probably 'selected' in the operating system and Fireworks doesn't like that. Obviously needs to be fixed as it is very annoying and selecting and opening files through the finder is standard practice and works without problem in other Adobe programs.

  • Scan will not save

Windows 8.1 - HP MFP1536 will not save the scan. You can see that the document has been scanned but it will not save it. I tried saving the scan to different file types such as .pdf or .jpg. No go. When I run HP Scan doctor jit just sits there and churns away.
This is a follow-up to a situation about a month ago where the scanning control panel would not even open after a forced windows 8.1 upgrade. At that it was recommended (on this forum) that the HP print software be uninstalled and reinstalled. I did that and it resolved the one issue - getting a scanning control panel. I never checked the functionality of the scanner at the time as this is my wife's machine. Today she neede to scan an item and it will not save.
    What should I do?

I am sorry that you are still seeing nothing. I would like to find out if scanning is successful on your machine. During a scan the HP Scan software saves scanned images to the user's temp folder prior to finalizing and saving the scanned document. Please try another scan, but before clicking 'Save' or 'Done' in the scan preview dialog, check the current user's temp folder location for scanned images.
Location of current user's temp folder: C:\Users\<current user>\AppData\Local\Temp\hpscanNNNN\
where <current user> is the name of the current user on the system and NNNN is a random 4-digit number (you will have to choose the hpscannNNNN folder that was most recently created).
(Hint: you can enter %temp% in Windows Explorer as a shortcut to the above folder path)
(NOTE: you will need to allowing viewing of hidden files and folders to see the 'AppData' folder)
In this folder should be the scanned files that are "ready to be saved". If files exist, then the scan was successful and there is something (a bug in the software?) that is preventing you from saving the files. If no files exist, then the scan was not successful (a different type of bug in the software or drivers) - and you shouldn't see any scanned images in the scan preview screen.
If you see scanned files in the temp folder, then you can use them (cut & paste to your folder location). But, this doesn't solve the larger problem of saving to your chosen local folder location.
Another thing to try: save a file using a different application to the same folder location you are trying to save scanned documents. For example, try saving a BMP from Paint or a TXT from Notepad. Does this work?
Uninstalling and reinstalling the HP software probably will not help, but you can try this again if you'd like. (You mentioned in your original post that you already performed a uninstall/reinstall.)
Regarding the HP Scan and Capture application, most of the 'not-so-good' reviews had to do with connectivity of the scanning application to various HP All-in-One printers. Many of these connectivity issues have been corrected; and, if HP Scan and Capture application can successfully connect to your device, then is a good, albeit simplistic, scanning application that will allow you to save your scan to a file. It might be worth a try. (If you don't like it, then you can always uninstall it.)

  • Could not save changes to this script because of a program error. -2706

OK, this is very odd! Please try the following and let me know your results:
    1) Create a new script with the following example code:
    set testList to {}
    repeat with i from 1 to 8145
copy i to end of testList
    end repeat
    2) Save the script as an Application (name it whatever you like).
    3) Launch the newly created Application and see if you get the same error message I am getting...
*Could not save changes to this script because of a program error.*
        -2706
If you replace the number 8145 with 8144 (or any number less than 8145) the script runs without error. Any number greater than 8144 returns the error message shown above. Maybe there's a reason for this that I'm overlooking or is this another bug?
I looked up error code -2706 ([HERE|http://developer.apple.com/Mac/library/documentation/AppleScript/Concept ual/AppleScriptLangGuide/reference/ASLRerrorcodes.html]) which says it is a "*Stack overflow.*"
Thanx in advance for any insight on this!!
    NOTE:
The only workaround I've found for this is to make sure the script resets the variable before it quits. Like this:
    set testList to {}
    repeat with i from 1 to 8145
copy i to end of testList
    end repeat
    set testList to ""

Hey Pierre, thanx for taking the time to scratch your head with me!
    Very odd indeed.
Glad it's not just me that thinks this!
I've also noticed that the problem occurs even when you try to save the script as a compiled script. That's possible as long as you haven't run the script. Once you have run it, trying to save it seems impossible. You get the message: *“The document “Document title” could not be saved.”*
I've noticed the same thing as you and have experienced this extra error several times while trouble shooting this problem!
On the other hand, is there any good reason for which you would want to save such a big list? Are there any drawbacks to the workaround you've found?
I don't want to save ANY variable EVER unless I explicitly tell my script to do so! This variable is not a property, so why would my script want to save it? I haven't noticed any drawbacks to the workaround. Setting the list variable to "" or {} (or ANYthing with under 8145 items) seems to work fine. I just find it weird that my script can't "*save changes to itself*"?! What is there to save? It's just a variable that should release after my script has run ...unless I'm completely misunderstanding how variables work after ALL these years of scripting.
Btw, the following version of the script (as you probably already know) is much faster, although it doesn't change anything to the result:
    *set testList to {}*
*set testListRef to a reference to testList*
    *repeat with i from 1 to 8144*
*copy i to end of testListRef*
    *end repeat*
Yeah, it definitely runs much faster this way! I just posted a quick example that would illustrate the 8144 list count limit. My script sets a variable to a list of numbers contained in a text file. This list is almost always rather large! Right now there are over 20,000 items in this list of numbers.
Again, thanx for your time my friend!!
