BUG: import from elements leads to broken directory structure

I want to migrate from Elements 4 to Lightroom.
When I start the "Import from elements" function in Lightroom the original folder structure is not presented correctly.
I'm sorry, but my directory structure in Elements is not homogeneous. Most directories are like \YEAR\SUBDIR\SUBSUBDIR\imagefile_n but some directories are nested deeper.
This confuses the "Import from elements" function in Lightroom. Most lowlevel directories are moved to toplevel, but some (!!!) directories are presented with the correct parent directories (full path).
I choose "Copy Photos To A New Location And Import" and "By Original Folders". Afterwards the original folder structure is NOT preserved correctly (as described above).
This malfunction can be reproduced at the Windows version.
When I use "Import from Filesystem" instead of "Import from Elements" the directory structure is preserved correctly.

Okay, found my own answer, finally. Ran across a posting including this line:
You can test that the catalog copy is ok by double clicking (or the Mac equivalent) on the file : catalog.pse10db. That should open the organizer with the catalog copy.
which gave me the idea to find that catalog.pse10db file. Found it, double clicked on it, and the organizer came up with all of our pictures, albums, etc. and has apparently decided that this is what we want *smile*.
So all's well that ends well.

  • Import From Elements - where did it go

I noticed that the Michael Tapes 'Import' video showed an 'Import From Elements' menu item on the file menu. I have the 4.1 beta installed and this item does not appear in the file menu. Where did it go or is there another way to import a PSE catalog straight into LR.
    Here is the video site:
    http://pictureflow.fileburst.com/_Tutorials/Photoshop_LR/01/index.html

I'm hoping that this whole process is unnecessary. By seeing the "Import from Elements" option, I am currently hoping/assuming that this means it will import the actual PSE Organizer catalog into LR. PSE Organizer uses .psa files for each catalog. I am hoping that by selecting the "Import from Elements" options, LR will take your .psa file (Photoshop Elements Organizer Catalog) and convert it into a .aglib file (Lightroom Library). The tags, categories and subcategories should be converted to the Lightroom equivalent of keywords, parent keywords, and child keywords (or whatever they're called in LR). In doing this, there should be no preparation of anything in PSE Organizer. If I'm understanding what Susan just said she did, it seems that the actions you just took Susan by making everything a category just took away all hierarchical tags (or parent/child information), for their is no heirarchy in the IPTC keywords fields, unless I'm mistaken.
Once again, I'm assuming this is how it will work and I hope I'm right . . . any other way just doesn't seem to make any sense. The "Import from Elements" option would not be needed if you've already embedded all of your tags into the files (or made all of your tags into categories and embedded that). If that information is already embedded in the file, then just import the files through the typical import dialog and it will find that information. There is no need to worry about the catalog or the "Import from Elements" command at all. My hope is that I don't need to do this and I can just convert the catalog on the fly (much like when you upgrade from say PSE Organizer version 3 to PSE Organizer version 5). Regardless, I will wait until LR is released before I take any steps to start the conversion process. I don't want to compomise something that I've spent years creating and works great already because I'm guessing or assuming how something may or may not work. I guess we shall all know soon enough (or even sooner if a final release tester can confirm this in any way).

  • Just a few quirks on Import from Elements and Keywords.

The Import from Elements seems like a good idea but the implementation is a little 'hit and miss'.
Tags in Elements (the Keywords) are not always picked up in LR. I can't work out what works and what doesn't but some Tags and the Tag Hierarchy come over correctly and some don't.
Version sets from Elements seem to be ignored. I suspects Stacks will as well.
Also I'm finding the use of Keywords a little restrictive in LR now that I have to sort out my imported images.
    1. I'd like to be able to delete an Image when I have selected it by keyword - (yes Sid did provide a work around, thanks) but it really should just be a question of hitting delete.
    2. I'd like to be able to stack images when I have selected them by keyword. You can't do this unless you go to Folder View or All Photographs.
I kind of get the impression that the way in LR works is great if you are going forward from a clean install. That is downloading images, reviewing, culling and organising. However, if you have an existing database to straighten out, then LR needs a little bit of polish to make this process easier.

#2 is about the only one I can offer any advice on.  First of all, I'd go to Download -> Multimedia -> TV@nywhere Master and make sure that I had the latest version of the TV@nywhere Master Driver and MSI Radio.
Secondly, you could probably silence MSI Radio by opening the Windows volume control (or whatever it's called in your version of windows) and muting whatever input you're using to feed sound from the TV@nywhere Master to your sound card.  On my system MSI Radio will actually un-mute Line In when I run it and re-mute when I exit.
Thirdly, when MSI Radio does misbehave and not shut up on exit, I can usually get it to hush by running and then exiting MSI PVS aka WinDVR.
Fourthly, I've noticed that my MSI Radio only fails to shut up if I click the Settings button while it is running.  Once I get the settings set, it doesn't give my any more problems as long as I can resist doublechecking my settings.
Correction: one problem.  It always mutes my master recording balance when it runs, meaning that anything I record with MSI Radio or PVS will be nothing but silence.  I have no idea what that's about.

  • "Import from Elements" option not available on File menu...

I'm trying to import my PSE 4.0 catalog into Lightroom 2.2, but the "Import from Elements" option does not appear on the file menu. I suspect this is due to the fact that PSE is not installed on the machine.
My circumstance is that I'm moving to a new computer that runs Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Since PSE 4.0 is not compatible with Vista, I cannot install in on the new machine, and have used an external drive to move the catalog and its contents to the new computer.
I would appreciate any help you can offer.
    Thanks.

PSE 4 is one of the Vista application compatibility patches included in the above update. I don't know how well it works and am not absolutely sure it works with 64 bit.

  • Importing from Elements 6

I have imported Mi Photos from Elements 6. Haw do I now if all of the Photos are in Lightroom. Can i do some control option to see if a have photos in the folder that not have bin imported. Lets say, photos that have bin deleted from the Elements catalog, but still on the computer.

    Use 'Synchronize Folder'.
If your photos are in the same catalog that they used to be when you had your Elements library, you can use the Synchronize Folder command on your top-level folder in Lightroom. It will show you the files that exist in your file system but were not imported into your LR catalog.
However, if the process of importing from Elements involves moving the actual files to a new folder (I just don't know, never had Elements) this method will not work. You'll probably need a third party folder synchronization utility.

  • LR 1.4 still has bug importing from CD.

I still have a problem importing more than one file by File>import from CD or DVD. I must go Start>My computer>drive#, highlight files, and drag into Library. It also works, if the drive is still listed in Folders, to right click on it>show in explorer, then highlight, & drag.

I might have the same problem!!

  • How to add new photos of old tags imported from Elements 5?

How do I add new photos to groups of pictures with specific tags??? - these tags were used to organize pictures in Elements 5.  As these groups are extremely important to my organization (100s of pic) I am not very happy with Elements 11

  • Import from Elements is not on my file menu

I'm using a trial version of Lightroom 3.2 and I would like to be able to convert my actual catalog under Photoshop Elements 6 to Lightroom. The instructions are clear but this option is not available under my menu of Lightroom?!? Is it because I'm using the trial version or is there a problem elsewhere?
    Thanks for helping me

I think, a few things that have been said in this thread are not quite true:
You cannot open an PSE catalog under File/Open Catalog, as this is not an LR catalog.
Even if the "Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog" is available in LR:
you cannot choose the PSE catalog to be converted. All you can choose in the dialog that comes up is the name and location of the target LR catalog.
The fact that there is a PSE catalog to upgrade as well as its name and location is taken from a registry entry, which is written by PSE (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Elements Organizer\8.0, value "CurrentCatalogPath").
If you want to upgrade several PSE catalogs, you have to open each one with PSE, then shut down PSE and upgrade in LR, open the next one in PSE and so on. (I've done it)
What I don't know though is why sometimes LR does dimm the "Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog" option, even though PSE is installed on the system and the registry key is present I myself have one catalog which will not activate that option, and I've been playing around with different value in the registry key without success.
Patrick, I'm making wild guesses here, but you could try to rename, move, optimize or repair the PSE catalog from within the catalog manager in PSE Organizer, and see if this makes any difference. Also, try to approach Adobe Support with this problem or maybe try to send Brian Kruse a PM from here, and see if he answers.

  • Keywords imported from PSE 5.0 (Poor User Experience)

When moving to Lightroom, I successfully imported my substantial catalog (6,000 images) from Photoshop Elements 5.0. Keyword importing doesn't seem to be quite right, however. I've noticed the following two problems.
    1. All keywords appear both in their proper hierarchy AND as separate, top level keywords. For example, I have:
    Family
    Kids
    Nick
    as well as just:
    Nick
All they Nick photos are tagged with both keywords (just "Nick" and "Nick>Kids>Family.")
These keywords seem to be treated by LR as separate keywords. For instance, if I apply "Nick" to a photo, it does not update the photo count for "Nick>Kids>Family." And vice versa.
This is a confusing situation. So it seems that I should delete all of the standalone, top level keywords, like "Nick." Do others agree? Is this a bug in the importing process from PSE 5.0?
    2. The hierarchy tags do not seem to update the photo count properly. When I create a parent/child keyword relationship in Lightroom, the addition of a child tag will of course update the count for the parent ("Family" as well as "Nick"). But this does not seem to work with respect to the keyword hierarchies imported from PSE 5.0. So perhaps I should essentially re-create the keyword structure in LR, which wouldn't be that hard to do. (Select "Nick" photos, delete the existing keywords, and create a new "Nick" keyword with the proper parent/child relationships.)
Again, have others seen this behavior? Or am I misunderstanding how this functionality is supposed to work?
I'm running LR 1.3.1 on Windows Vista.
    Thanks.

I'm trying the Lightroom trial version and have had very similar issues on my import from Elements 5.02.
I get a Top level tag and a matching one in a tree, event though it is only in the tree in Element Organizer. Some seem to have the identical set of photos, but others like "Emma" (my cat) have 10 photos attached at the top level and 200+ in the tree.
I'm also struggling with using multiple keywords at once like
    Jim + Mexico + Lisa
In the tree view I can only select one at a time and when typing into FIND it sometimes narrows the selection drastically for no apparent reason.
Any pointers for someone happy with their Elements Organizer into Lightroom import would be most appreciated.

  • Converted to Lightroom from Elements 5

I installed the trial version from a link found in a message on this forum and imported from Elements 5. Luckily, I only had something less than 3000 images loaded into Elements and hadn't done serious tagging on most of them. I decided to use this trial version of Lightroom because I only decided yesterday to switch from Elements to Lightroom and ordered the shipped version so, being impatient, I would have to go with the trial version tomorrow anyway.
How did the import go? Well, not perfectly. It went well until the end when Lightroom crashed just after it finished importing. I wasn't even touching the computer when it did that. However, when I brought it up it looked OK.
For some reason it decided to have some of my keyword tags nested and some not. In other words, the same tag would appear nested under something and not nested. I had no idea how to merge tags (surely this is something one would want to do?) so I think I ended up losing some tagging, but I can live with that. Some other tags had lost their hierarchical structure but at least weren't duplicated.
Folders also had lost their structure but that looks to be just an issue of dragging and dropping to fix it. They aren't physical folders in Lightroom.
My most serious issue for me is the capture date. Elements supported not knowing the day and/or month. They are coming in here differently. July 1952 is June 30, 1952. I had previously checked and Exifer does display just what I entered in Elements: if only the year, then only the year, if the month and year, then the month and year. This is not coming over in Lightroom.
I have thousands of slides we are scanning and I almost never know the exact day any slide was taken. I'm lucky to know the month. I was overjoyed that the capability existed in Elements to specify what you do know and not have to make up more that you don't know. I don't know how that is actually stored in the exif info, but like I said, Exifer did understand it.
Any suggestions about what to do? Elements can't simply have used the last day of the month before or the last day of the year before because surely you could specify those dates explicitly.
I'm going to have to get used to working with Lightroom. I was able to do things pretty quickly in Elements. Lightroom has a lot of stuff displayed on both sides and I have to figure out how to move around quickly. In paricular, the metadata area doesn't stay put to type in location, for example. The use more metadata fields and not just tags is one of the major reasons I am switching to Lightroom. I have lots of tags as well. I guess recent keywords are going to be very important.
So now I have to go read the help, which so far doesn't seem very helpful.
I had played around with Beta 4 so I know something about Lightroom.

Can't be physical folders because they came in structured incorrectly compared to my disk. OK, they are physical folders in the sense that they contain what the corresponding physical folder contains but they do not need to have the same structure as your physical folder system.
I was able to drag a couple of folders into the same relationship as my physical structure and it didn't do anything to my actual file system. Hum. I'm going to have to play around with this. The help is not very good.
Version sets did not survive together in any way. Stacks seem to be stacked. I had more version sets, though. I guess I stack them.

  • Can I upgrade from Lightroom 3 to  5 and then move a catalogue into it from Elements 10?

I currently have Lightroom 3, Elements 10, and just bought CS6.
Is it possible / advisable to upgrade to Lightroom 5 and then move the catalogue from Elements into Lightroom? it would consolidate photos in one catalogue, at a minimum...
    any help appreciated.

Yes it can be done and is advisable!! Upgrade your Lr3 catalog in Lr5. I would then creat a new catalog in Lr5 and import the Elements one, then Open your original Lr5 catalog and import the one with the elements images. Just to keep the importing from elements separate.

  • Photoshop Elements 8 import from Epson Scanner?

How can I get Photoshop Elements 8 to import from my Epson scanner?  On my previous computer, the scanner just showed up when I selected "Import" under File?  I've spent 2.0 hours with the supposed "tech support" in India and they had no idea.  I've been using Elements 4 on my iMac for years and it worked perfectly.  Help!
I'm starting to learn that I just spent good money for Elements 8 for nothing.  It would appear that Epson has refused to make a TWAIN plugin for Photoshop Elements 8 so it will talk to the scanner and the program seems to be filled with bugs wshen used with Snow Leopard.  Anyone have any answers?

  • Import catalogue from Elements 8

I am running Lightroon 2.5 and Elements 8. Is there any way to import the catalogue from elements complete with tags etc. Manmy thanks

Thanks for your further interest. I have installed the Beta 3 version and imported the catalogue as offered at initial opening.
As I haven't gone through this process, could you please explain EXACTLY how you imported your PSE8 catalog into LR3 beta?
All the keyword tags have been imported but only about one third of the thumbnails have  tags attached.
Did you import the photos, or import/convert the catalog? There is a difference. Please specify exactly what you did.
I believe the thumbnails will have been imported from "my pictures" rather from the elements 8 cataolgue. I cannot see that there is any facility to do this but maybe I will need to await the final version.
This statement leads me to believe that you imported the photos, not import/convert the catalog.

  • Keyword exporting bug also impacts catalogs imported from PSE 6

    Hi,
I haven't seen any mention of it, but the keyword exporting bug reported for catalogs imported from LR 1.x also impacts catalogs imported from Photoshop Elements 6. i.e. all Keywords imported from my PSE 6 catalog have "Include in export", "Export Containing Keywords", and "Export Synonyms" properties set to false.
I've reported the bug, but as it seems the same as described in KB 405074 (and more importantly, its fix works for formerly PSE catalogs as well!), I'm sure it will be fixed in the next update.

    Hi Brian,
When I installed the trial for LR2 I was asked whether I wanted to upgrade my existing PSE6 catalog.
Screenshot of this can be found here: http://dawsons.id.au/temp/pse6-to-lr2-catalog.png
That's it. I haven't imported any keywords via any other method.
    Thanks,
    Matt
PS I'm impressed with the level of Lightroom team involvement in these forums. I've been a PSE user for at least 5 years and have never received feedback from that team re posts/support calls/feature request/bug reports. I've been a LR user for about two weeks and I've already had Tom and yourself reply to my posts. You've got to be happy with that!
