Bug in Address Book search function?

Here's an annoying bug in Address Book - maybe this has been noted here before.
Like most people, I like to divide my numbers into smaller blocks for legibility - it makes them easier to memorise.
So +49303912345 becomes + 49 30 391 2345 where the country and area codes are separated by a space.
The problem is that if I search for 12345 it will only give me the first result as it thinks that there is a gap/empty space between the 1 and the 2.
This is unhelpful and rather surprising - anyone else notice this - is it a bug?

Don't think it's a bug... It's the way it works.
Are these phone numbers? and are you entering them into the phone number field?
If there appears a gap/empty space between the 1 and 2, then you should expect that it will think there is a gap/empty space between 1 and 2.
Basically, AddressBook - and the other Spotlight interfaces - treat numbers the same as any other text, so that '1 2345' is no more the same as '12345' than 'a star' is the same as 'astar'.
If you've memorized it by blocks, then it should be easier to enter it by the same blocks.
Of course, if you want to see it change, you can always submit feedback

  • Address book search functions

Is there any BlackBerry device which has a search function that will find all files which contain a certain word?  For example, using the search function, I want to display a list of all of my contacts in DENVER.

I don't believe so, as the search function of the BB reads only the first, last and company name fields in the search, unless the word Denver is a part of one of those fields.

  • Messenger Express: How do I add the Directory Server to the address book search tool?

In Messenger Express (ME) how do I add the Directory Server (DS) to the address book
    search tool?
    <P>
Edit the globals.pl file. Look for a line similar to: <BR>
    @dirservers = ('MyCompany::phonebook.foo.com::o=FooCorp.,c=US','Four11 Directory::ldap.four11.com::');
    <P>
Add an entry to the list. The list is comma delimited and each entry is a
string. The string contains three fields, delimited by a double colon (::). The
first field is the name you want to appear in the User Interface (UI). The second is
the hostname of the DS and the third is the Distinguished Name (DN) to use when searching.
    <P>
Please note, Messenger Express is part of the Messaging Server. For more
information on Messenger Express, please see the release notes at
    http://home.netscape.com/eng/server/MExpress/relnotes.htm

You can't add a new contact to specific group and there is no app for this. 3rd party apps don't have access to private iPhone APIs with security concerns being a primary reason, which such a function would require.

  • ACI for corporate address book search

    Hi,
I am using IDS52 and IMS52. My exisiting domain is abc.com. Due to certain circumstance, I have created another domain called; xyz.abc.com under the same messaging server. I do not want users from abc.com to see xyz.abc.com email address when they do a corporate address book search using their email client, eg:outlook express.
I have created one aci under xyz.abc.com
    (targetattr = "*") (target = "ldap:///o=xyz.abc.com,dc=abc,dc=com") (version 3.0;acl "test";deny (read,search) userdn != "ldap:///o=xyz.abc.com,dc=abc,dc=com??sub?(objectclass=inetOrgPerson)";))
Using this aci I am not only block people from abc.com to search xyz.abc.com address. In fact, people in xyz.abc.com also blocked from searching the address under their domain.
Can somebody help me, is there anything wrong with my aci? How should i rewrite it? Please help!! Thank you

    Hi Jim,
I was able to reproduce this on IWC 137631-10 (latest patch).
This is related to an existing bug, which is not fixed yet:
Bug 6795529 Corporate address book - no VLV index: search by firstname/lastname/email doesn't work
According to the developers, if VLV is not enabled in IWC, IWC/Convergence will only search by displayname (even if the user chooses lastname). The bug fix is to NOT display the options to search by lastname etc, if VLV is not enabled.
The search by lastname works for me after I enable VLV in IWC, as described in the IWC admin guide:

  • MS Exchange Mail Profile has address book search issues

    We have recently upgraded to
OS X Mountain Lion and configured successfully Mail profile for MS Exchange server 2010. Emails send and receive has no issues. But address book search does not work, e.g. while composing Email, we write last name of the contact, which should show me possible contacts in the address book. But that is not happening. I know the contact is there in my Exchange address book. But it simply does not show up in compose mail To: dialog box with last name written.
Pls help me over come the issue urgently.

Same type of problem here, although I'm not sure about the precise error messages.
I have 3 machines, and have tested two of them on the corporate network with the exchange server, but that did not really improve anything but my frustrations.
It seems that Mail can be set up with the auto-discovery feature plus a few extra things from our IT guys, as the auto-set-up function is not really enough to get things working here. I wonder if that is the reason why SL cannot make things happen by itself, since I also have to enter some settings manually when trying to get MS Entourage to work, e.g. the full address to our "Exchange server" which is something like: mail.domain.dk/exchange/[email protected]
I'm really sorry to have to say this, buy having 3 separate apps (iCal, Mail and AdressBook) does not seem to make things easier to set up, while once you get Entourage working then everything is set, although one has to live with awfully designed user-interfaces.
Another thing that the MS app is asking for, which can not be set anywhere - to my knowledge in Mac apps - is "Domain" which for some reason at my company is not the "mail-server" name but another name. I guess that to get the Mac app's to really be working smoothly in the Exchange servers, we need to have the same options for entering site-specific information (as the domain name).
One interesting thing in all this is that my iPhone has been working flawlessly for a year now, and does not seem to have any issues with the Exchange server.

  • Problems with Advanced Address Book Search

Recently was running TB 24.2 under Ubuntu 12.4. All ran great, except could not search the Notes field in my address book. Got help from this forum and installed MoreFunctionsForAddressBook. This made the Notes field available for searching in the Quick Search window and in the Advanced Address Book Search dialog box (Edit > Search Addresses). Problem solved!
Now have upgraded to TB 31.2.0. Quick Search window still works fine, including searching the Notes field. However, the Notes field is no longer listed in the Advanced Address Book Search, AND the Advanced Address Book Search does not work at all. I get zero results for any search on any field.
Is the Advanced Address Book Search broken in TB 31.2.0? If not, any ideas on what I might have set up wrong to keep it from functioning? Any diagnostic I could run?
Also, does MoreFunctionsForAddressBook no longer add fields to the Advanced search?
I have worked on this for hours, with no luck. Suggestions are welcomed.

Toad-Hall ---- Thanks very much!!! I completely missed the new version of the plug-in. I upgraded TB to v 31 and wasn't bright enough to think about the add-on compatibility.
With MoreFunctions 0.7.1, my Advanced Search (Edit > Search Addresses) now has a lengthy list of search-field choices, including the Notes field. This is a life saver for me, since that's where all my keywords are.
You really bailed me out on this one! Many thanks.

  • Address book searching failures revisited

I tried the solution given here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6992129
However, if I type "rag" in the address book search field, it finds two contacts without highlighting any string within them. Furthermore, I can't see "rag" there.
    Any explanations?

Wow. Worked perfectly! I noticed I started to have this problem after the 10.5.2 update.

  • Lion address book search

lion address book search no longer works - it did a few days ago.. any ideas how to fix?
have just made spotlight reindex the disc. no joy.

    Barney 15E has a fix:
If you have MobileMe or any other syncing of your contacts, turn it off.
Open Address Book and archive your Address Book (File, Export, Address Book Archive).
    Close Address Book
Go into your user/Library/Application Support/AddressBook folder and delete the addressbook.abcddb file.
Start Address Book and see if all is ok.
If so, turn syncing back on if appropriate.
I don't know if this will work for your problem. I haven't seen those errors, but I haven't looked for them, either.
The addressbook.abcddb is database that indexes the contacts that are stored in the metadata folder. If that gets corrupted, you'll see things like you describe. Address Book will recreate it when you delete it.

  • 6301 Address Book Search

I recently received a 6301 on Orange. It's a great phone with some really nice features.
I use a Mac, so modified iSync to copy all my contacts across (using script from www.james-lloyd.com). This worked fine, and all my contacts are in the phone with full details in the Address Book.
The problem comes when scrolling through:
Some of the names are out of order
The search function does not work at all - even though there are multiple contacts with a particular letter they do not appear in the search
Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone suggest a workaround?
    Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem with my Nokia 6300. Yesterday, my mobile automatically restored its factory settings and I lost good amount of my contacts. I can see them some times, but can't search at any case. Tried to synchronize them but it always stops at 64 out of 630 contacts!

  • Help! Address Book search is broken (on MacBook)

The search function on Address Book no longer works on my MacBook running 10.7.5
There seem to be a number of other related problems. Two of them are:
    - Contacts won't open
    - Difficult to create new contacts
    - Difficult to delete cards
It would be too long to go into details, which seem to change by the day anyway. All I know is it's broken. Is there a way to reinstall? Or do some kind of diagnostic?
    Many thanks!
PS: I tried to post a similar discussion last week, but there seems to be no record of it. If you find it (it has the same title) please let me know.

  • Simplify Address Book Search on 5230.

I was previously using E71 and recently switched to 5230 touch screen phone.
One thing that i really find it difficult is to find contact in address book. The search function bring up entire A-Z keys in 2 pages so flipping through the character set is little annoying... further as u type .. the key set narrows (good feature) but then u have to look hard for the next key as the position has changed!!....I wonder if the search functionality similar to N72 (t9) is implemented here so that all the keys are visibile on single screen...(in home screen the dialer is the best place to implement... as u type the character the address books gets filtered)..
The character set flipping and changing position every time takes lots of effort ... i would rather like to use a fix character set (the standard number+abc keypad) on same screen and see the adress get filter insted of flipping pages and trying to see where the next char is....
May i request the moderator to pass this message to 5230 team so that they might consider this a new feature request and we might get this feature in next Firmware release...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Many Thank I has make my life much simpler .. specially when u are searching address book in busy subarban train..
just to add a bit.. on 5230 this settings are
setting -> phone -> touch Input -> Adaptive Search.
Also i discovered another good way... tag a person to symbo... quite helpful.

  • Address Book searches hang/painfully slow

I've been having a problem with Address Book for several months now. I assume it was associated with a particular OS update, but I can't say with certainty.
My address book is not all that large (538 cards) but most of the time now, it's basically impossible to search for anything in it. When I type the first character in the search box, I get the spinning cursor and the application will be essentially locked up (as it searches) for SEVERAL MINUTES before it finally narrows the list down to those entries containing the character that I typed (and then, if I am feeling masochistic, I could type the next character and wait some more.)
This basically renders Address Book unusable, since if you can't pull someone's information up quickly on-the-fly, I might as well be using a notepad and a pen.
I suspect this problem is related to Spotlight, since I've had the same problem, sometimes, when doing Spotlight searches.
What's going on and how do I fix it?

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command, and press <Return> (you can copy the command here and paste it in Terminal):
    sudo mdutil -E -i on /
The -E option tells Spotlight to delete any already existing index data (so that it’s rebuilt from scratch all over again). The -i on option ensures that indexing is enabled. Finally, the ‘/’ at the end means “apply this command to the startup disk”.
After entering the previous command in Terminal, you’ll be prompted for your administrator password. Type it blindly (you won’t see any feedback of the keystrokes while you type it) and press <Return>.
For best results, quit Mail and don’t play too much with your disk while Spotlight reindexes it, i.e. avoid files being created/modified/deleted, mail being downloaded, etc.
That should fix the Spotlight issue, but may not fix the Address Book issue completely. Post back with your observations when done.
Have you configured Address Book to search for addresses in LDAP servers (Address Book > Preferences > LDAP)?
You may also open /Applications/Utilities/Directory Access, turn OFF LDAP in the Services pane, click Apply, and see whether that makes a difference.

  • HT2194 Address Book searches and tags or keywords

Is there a way to use keyword or tags for searches in Apple's Address Book? Putting contacts into Groups isn't always the most efficient way of find people or narrowing down people withing a group. Does anyone have any ideas? Will Apple ever implement tags in Address Book?

I mostly use groups for both those purposes. I also use the company field as a sort of tag, since very few of my contacts are companies rather than individual. So I have contacts with builder or plumber or electrician in the company field - but this won't work for you if you need that field for company names. The other field you can use is the notes field; you could put several tags in, and you wouldn't need any special separator as search will find them.
The advantage of groups, for me, is that you only have to type the tag or category once and you can so quickly isolate all those in the group. A contact can of course be in multiple groups; indeed a group can be in a group.

  • LDAP address book search slow

    Hi,
I am using the LDAP server on Mac OS X Server 10.4 to store our corporate address book which is updated from a php based admin. The amount of contacts is around 700 now and searchs from Apple Addressbook are taking nearly 10 seconds. Is there a way of speeding this up hopefully to below 2 seconds?
I don't know much about LDAP and have been trying to reindex the database by stopping LDAP and runnign slapindex, but this doesn't seem to have made a difference.
    Many Thanks

    Grafika Ltd

I have solved my problem. I don't think the indexing was a problem. I was running on 10.4.3 and had a process called nano using my processor at 100%. I noticed this and upgraded to 10.4.6 server which has cured the problem and now the LDAP search is almost instant.
