Bug in Aperture's Color labels?

When I select an image and use the main menu to change the color label to nothing, viewing in the list view shows the label as "--" (without the quotes). When I use the sidebar to perform the same operation, the list view shows the label to be "No Label" (with the quotes). This seems inconsistent. Is this a bug?

Yes, its been around since at least version 3.  While it doesn't cause a lot of problems in Aperture itself if you try to use Applescript to script the labels it causes all sorts of problems.
I reported it numerous times, keep hoping that one day it will be fixed. You can send feedback to Apple reporting this, see Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback

  • Apparent bug in 3.1's handling of color labels

This ties is with [Applescipt manipulating color label|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2645193&tstart=15] posted earlier today.
If you set the color label of an image to have no color label via the pulldown in the metadata tab of the inspector (select the first circle which will display the text *No Label* when selected) the images color label is set to the string "No Label". Confirm this by looking at the browser in column view, the third column in the default view is Label. You'll see that for colors you'll get a circle of the color and the string name of the color. You'll also notice that other images that do not have a color label simply have --
The problem arises if you select *No Label* in the search field or Filter HUD. The images labeled as *No Label* rather then the empty string will not show up in the search.
The *No Label* string can be cleared out by setting the images label to No Label via the +Command 0+ keystroke.
The Applescript command to set color labels also exhibits this behavior.

Working with events can sometimes be interesting.  I concentrated my efforts more on fixing the issue than trying to determine if this is a bug or not.  I modified your code slightly to filter events based on click type and I think it is working the way you intended.  Let me know it is not quite right.

  • Aperture 3.1 color label problem

After the recent 3.1 "upgrade" I notice the following: 1. Keyboard shortcuts for color labels no longer work. 2. Filtering images by color label no longer works.

    They still work for me.
I had some trouble understanding the filter choices in the Color Label Rule. Fwiw, it is hard to tell which colors are selected (often more than it seems), and it isn't immediately clear that this rule has multiple selections with a fixed "or" operator.
Regarding the keyboard shortcuts -- have you altered your command set in any way? When happens when you press "{command}+1" (do any of the menu items in the menu bar show in reverse-video)?

  • Assigning multiple color labels to one image in Aperture?

Is there a way to assign more than one color label to an image? I suppose I could use a third color to signify what "color 1" and "color 2" together mean, but that's a bit confusing...
    Thank you,
    David

Yeah, I use keywords extensively, and absolutely understand their value, as you highlight, but find that colored labels are more convenient for certain things. For example, I can very quickly mark (with the labels keyboard shortcuts) images without opening the Inspector and typing in keywords, and subsequently find images without creating a smart album, simply through their color "halos". (It's a "dumbed-down" process, to be sure, but it works when you're feeling lazy!)
Thank you for the response, and for submitting the request for multiple color labels.
    Best,
    David

  • Grid View: Flags, Rating, Color Label read only? / Mark Images Read only?

    Hi
I'd like to see the flag-status, rating and color label assigned to an image as cell icons. But if I show them as Cell Icons, I am also able to change them, which happens to me quite often accidentally when I click into the frame of a image to change selections.
Is it possible to show these markers for each image without being able to change them in the frame? I would be quite happy being able to change them from the tool bar, but still being able to see them on the single image.
    Related to this:
Is it somehow possible to mark images as read only, so that further changes (development, metadata etc.) can be made impossible? This would be nice for older images, which have been processed completely and should stay that way, inhibiting accidental changes to images. Sometimes it is difficult to even notice when one accidentally changes metadata on an image.
    Thanks for your thoughts

Yes it's a bug. I see it on Mac platform.

  • Change folders color labels

Hi, I want to change the color label of folders which contain specified files, eg movs, jpegs. I don´t want to copy or remove files, because folder size is about 140 GB. The biggest group of files is about 50 GB. I mention this, because I think getting specified finder items could be a problem for my little ibook?
    Thanks in advance

Also for the bug that iTunes doesn't minimize when I double-click the top edge of the window.
    It isn't a bug, it's a feature.
Actually, I kinda like the improvements to the "miniplayer" thing, even though it isn't the same thing as minimizing the app. The only thing I don't like about the miniplayer is the tiny, hard to hit icon used to toggle it on & off, but if I can just remember the Cmd-Option-M shortcut for that I'm OK with that too.
I wouldn't mind filling out a survey before they (Apple) curtained features.
After hanging around ASC for a few years, I have realized that almost everybody has very different ideas about the usefulness of just about every feature Apple has ever implemented. If Apple listened to users, I suspect we would end up with an OS so bloated it wouldn't even be able to crawl, much less run, on most Macs, & the user preferences alone would have so many options nobody could find the ones they wanted without help.
Actually, I think that may already be happening ... but I'm sure everybody has a different opinion about that, too!

  • Metadata Label and Color Labels

As I wanted to sort my pictures on subject I chose to put the name in the Metadata Label Field as the Label Text is available for that purpose (I would have expected the caption text for this purpose). When I put a text in the Metadata Label field a white color label field is shown in grid view below the thumbnail but a white color label is mentioned nowhere in the Lightroom documentation. The sorting works perfectly but when I apply a color label to that picture the text that was put in the Metadata Label field is replaced by the name of that color label so that the sorting is disturbed!
One way to overcome this is making the caption text to be used for sorting, another to prevent applying a color label name to the Metadata Label field. So I don't know if this is to be considered a bug report or a feature request.
By the way some of the other reasons for the 2.1 version are clearly working as I've noticed.

Thanks Don, I've never used color labels either but as I didn't know that the white label was due to this I deleted all of them (fortunately only in one collection) and thereby also deleted all Label texts!
I am now using 2.1 also but the Color Label shown in the footer of the thumbnail stays white.
Anyway it would be nice to be able to use Caption text for sorting as this is useful in other respects too!
And mentioning the White Color label in the documentation would be helpful also.

  • Color label setting problems in Develop module

Today is the first day with Lightroom 3, where I have over 200 photos from an event, that I am walking through each photo.  I am in the develop module and I am setting the color label to red or blue.  What seems to be constantly (not every time) happening is when I click the color for the label, LR will move to the next photo, but not apply the color label.
As I write this I'm trying it out to notice a pattern.  What I see is photo 1, I click on the red label and the photo is labeled red and LR moves to photo 2.  I click on the red label and LR does not set any color label and moves to photo 3.
Another thing that happened is I was then at photo 3 and clicked on the blue label.  LR did not set the blue label but jumped to photo 4 and put the blue label on that photo.
    This is very annoying.
Where might I report this bug to Adobe?

Same bug as with ratings. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/679696?tstart=0
Flagging via the toolbar, also shows this problem.
As noted above, use keyboard shortcuts.

  • Search by Finder "Color Label" or "Spotlight Comments"?

Is it possible to do a search of referenced images by either their Finder Color Label, or their Spotlight Comments in Aperture?
I suspect not, but thought I'd ask just in case I'm missing something..
Would anyone else find this capability useful?
    G5 2x2.5Ghz/2.5GB; 15" 1.25Mhz PowerBook/1GB; 4x3.0Ghz Mac Pro/4GB   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

heh.. so I'm guessing that's a "No", "no", and "NO".
Oh well.. guess I'll submit some feedback then.

  • Why doesn't the "Command Number" keyboard shortcut apply the colored label to the selected image?

Why doesn't the "Command Number" keyboard shortcut apply the colored label to the selected image?  The similar keyboard shortcut to assign stars works, but the shortcut to assign a label color doesn't?

Just to be sure they haven;t been reassigned in your Aperture go to Aperture->Commands->Customize then in the search box in the upper right hand corner enter color.
You should see the keyboard shortcuts and the corresponding add label commands.
If they are set then quit Aperture move you preference file to the desktop and restart Aperture. The instructions for moving the preference file can be found at Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics

  • Applescipt manipulating color label

In manipulating image version's color label,
set color label to no color label,
It results in browser's label column,"no label" not a nomally "--"
Is there way to set label to "--" ?
-- some operations to determine color label here reseult to vResult
    -- inside tell image versions
if vResult is equal to "" then
    set color label to purple
    else
set color label to no color label
    end if

Looks like the color label is just a string that Aperture interprets to actually turn on the color. So for example an image marked Orange has an orange dot and the string "Orange" next to it.
So as a long shot you can try try setting the color label in the script to Null (or the applescript equivalent) or even just "".
On the images you've set the color label to "No Label" with the script, do they still show up in searches for images with no label? If they do then does it really matter what they look like in column view?

  • Color label text

In preferences under labels it is possible to attach a string of text to each individual color.
I was going to say that I couldn't find a way to display the text but as i was typing this I checked the list view and the text does show up there.
Does anyone know if it is possible to have the text show up in anything other than the list view?
    thanks

Thanks for the reply, great stuff as always. I wasn't aware of the label showing up in the Filter HUD on and Metadata pane on mouse over. That works for me.
My pleasure -- I'm always learning. Glad to help.
Not showing up in the Label field in the Metadata pane seems like a bad miss on the designers part, it would be a perfect place to display it right under the color dot itself.
Yes. I think Aperture really came of age w. 3.x -- but now there are ripples to smooth. Frictionless it's not.
No this time I'm not looking at this from a programming point-of-view. I'm actually looking at it for use in my workflow (starting to hate that phrase). I'm gradually shifting from Aperture as a great piece of software to poke around and see what it can do to actually trying to setup my digital darkroom.
I'm looking at labels to keep track of my prints as they go through the process. You know grey is test print, purple is first work print, blue is second, etc. Trying to see how much of what I remember from my darkroom days carries over. I'm trying to slow myself down. It's so easy , for me at least, to just go in and start whacking around sliders to see what happens, the thought process and stepwise refinement you need when dealing with the physical gets lost.
Labels, of course, are just another metadata field. I think of them as privileged -- in addition to all that one can do with metadata, Labels are given a special treatment and showing in several (all?) views of one's images. As such, they can serve a privileged role in one's workflow (a meaningful word, if a bit like used bubblegum). I, too, use them to mark stages of image development. The +really nice thing+ is that this shows at a glance in the browser. Whatever you decide, I strongly advise that you use the color labels to show something you want to know instantly about an image (contrasted to keywords). Here's one of the schemes I use, to give you some ideas on how to -- or how not to -- set up yours:
. (blank) -- not yet ranked at all
. red -- marked for development
. orange -- development started, not finished (sometimes the phone rings, etc.)
. yellow -- part of bracketed set (for HDR or panorama -- note that the returned image will join the Stack as the pick and be developed and labeled)
. green -- developed, ready to be published
. blue -- a Version of a (green) developed shot, to be re- or differently developed for a specific need
. purple -- a developed blue Version, ready to be used
. gray -- abandon but keep (fatal flaw somewhere -- this is for those "I liked that ... O! Now I remember ... " shots)
Which brings me to another question, notes. Back in the day I'd always be making notes as I went through the printing process. Most times I would just use the back of the test print. I've been using the caption field but that seems like a less then optimal solution. So if you keep notes as you adjust and print where do you keep them? I've tried making a custom field which would be ideal but there doesn't seem to be a way to make it larger than a single line and reading it back then is a pain.
I use a custom metadata field I named "Comment" (very important, imho, to not use Caption, as that field is often published and shows up in many places). Here's a screen shot with some important additional information:

  • LR 1.2 Export Catalog does not export Color Labels

I've used the export catalog several times to update Meta Data on a 2nd PC while traveling, etc. then move it back to the original catalog. I thought before that my color labels were lost, but this last go-round I had a lot of pictures tagged with specific color labels - none of which made it to the exported catalog. Bug? Or did a miss a setting some place?

    Okay, here's the deal.
Colors are just convenient ways to change the "Label" metadata field, and the color label filters are just convenient ways to search on that field *using the current color label set*.
Lots of things regarding colors make more sense once you realize this.

  • Close all folders in Mail?  Color Label folders?  Find folder?  And More!

    Hi all.
I have a LOT of mail. They're all very organized, though. Heaps of Mailboxes (Folders) and Sub-folders.
I also have heaps of rules dutifully sending incoming mail to their appropriate mailboxes.
    However...
It has reached a point where one of of the major bottlenecks in my daily workflow is sorting through all these mailboxes.
There are 5 primary mailboxes with perhaps 100-ish subfolders or sub-subfolders. Maybe more.
When they are all open, or a lot of them are open, it is difficult to find the a specific folder when I need it. It would help if I could close all open folder with a shortcut.
    Is this possible?
It would also help if I could visually distinguish each level. Can I color label the mailboxes(not the messages themselves)?
Another help would be if I could run a search for a folder Mailbox name. Is this possible?
Lastly when I create a rule I would love it if there was an option to 'Create new Mailbox' in the rule dialog box rather than having to create the mailbox first. Am I just missing this? See link for illustration:
    http://img.skitch.com/20080820-eaqmy89emw6xm5pcj86iuqu992.jpg

I just had a look and you need to create the mailbox PRIOR to asking the rules to move it into that.
Now, automator lets you create a new workflow, but not sure as to how to set that one up (might be possible; however, my mathematical brain tells what you want to achieve is flawed:
    1) IF new mail equals "tangerine", create new mailbox tangerine, then move message to mailbox "tangerine. (FINE so far!)
    2) the second "tangerine" message arrives, and the workflow should FAIL (because it cannot create a "new" mailbox "tangerine", as there is ALREADY a mailbox named "tangerine")
    3) if automator cannot execute "If" and "and" and the "sort by" all together, then distinguish (a "tangerine" message might actually need to go to "pear" but refers to "pears and tangerines", so it ends up in the wrong mailbox), you may have to start and restart mail, until all stages of the script have been executed.
    You see the problems?
Anyhow, here is a link to some automator info:
