Bug in apple dvd player?

has anyone epxerienced this?
I am experiencing a strange thing where buttons are intermittently not highlighting. Like after viewing a track, and pressing menu, I am on my menu with nothing highlighted (and menu targets are set to specific buttons).
This is also happening in my audio menu for example, I select a button that goes to a script that sets a variable and then jumps back to that specific button, If I keep pressing enter on one option, it seems that randomly the button wont be selected, but if I push it again, it will be...
I normally never caught this because I usually use the mouse over the video screen to select things, but this surfaces regularily when using the arrow buttons on the "remote"

I've been documenting thie issue for about 8 months.
We had a disc that the client kept bouncing for this issue, though we could not reproduce it ourselves.
There are two factors here-
I believe it was Panther and it's version of DVD Player that were showing an eve more extreme version of the issue, where not only would highlights not appear, but the menu backgrounds would not change when switching between menus, very disorienting! However, even on Tiger with updated DVD Player, the missing highlight issue would still occur, usually on the default button the first time the menu is displayed.
Someone suggested this might have to do with the use of layered psd's as menu assets, so I converted everything to flat pict files (backgrounds & overlays were formerly in one file.) this worked on one disc but not another....
I have only ever seen this issue on the various version of the disc associated with this one project, but it occurs on all of them... The only other variable these project have in common is that they were originally authored in DVDSP3, and updated to 4. I'd say if it still persists, try re-authoring in 4 from scratch and see if that helps.

Clock freezes after using Apple DVD Player

I am having a small and annoying issue with the Apple DVD Player (v 4.6.5). This just started happening recently. Everytime I run a DVD (or video TS file, etc) on the software player-it performs as usual. After quitting the application and choosing to eject the disc, I notice there is a longer lag from when I first used the computer, then the little colored wheel of death spins, and eventually Apple DVD Player closes.
The problem, however, is after the application is closed out, my time freezes in the status bar in the upper right hand corner of the screen. (As I write this it says 1:16 and the time in the apple "date and time" preferences panel of OSX says it's 2:14-which is the real time) If I drag the cursor up to the time status bar in the upper right hand corner, it turns into the spinning color wheel, and back again once dragged out.
Once the computer restarts, the time in the upper right goes back to normal with no spinning wheel (until I open Apple DVD Player and quit out of it again). I know this is not an earth-shattering issue, but it is fairly annoying and abnormal. If anyone has suggestions, please help.

It sounds like you found your answer but I also wanted to mention that this is a known BUG when using DVD Player and the Digital Optical Out of a G5. If you look at activity monitor when the Clock is dead and you get the Beach Ball the SystemUIServer will be listed as not responding. If you Force quit this process everything should start working again. As long as the LoginWindow Process is running the SystemUIServer will restart when needed after the force quit.
HOWEVER, The other part of this bug with Digital Optical Out is that sometimes the LoginWindow Process will also stop responding. In this case a Log-Out is the only way to correct the problem. The third part of this bug is sometimes the Finder also stops responding but a Relaunch will fix that.
As I said it sounds like you found your problem but I wanted to post this incase others out there using the Digital Optical Out read this and don't correct their problem.
Also, If you were using the "DOO" by deleting the .plist will set the DVD player back to SYSTEM falsely making one think the problem is fixed.
Last I know this is a known bug because I submitted it as a bug to Apple and received an e-mail stating they know of this problem already.

Apple DVD PLAYER ERROR

After installing 10.5, opening Dvd player i received this error
There was an initialization error
A valid video device could not be found for playback [-70017]
I've searched all over the forums with no solutions.
i know its not a big problem with leopard but any workarounds would be apprec.
The apple dvd player is version 5.0

now I do not know if this is just me but I have had issues with the DVD player
I played a DVD from a one on the older iDVD software (before iLife 08)
the DVD would work in Tiger fine
I downloaded Leopard, now i get a message if i select "play from beginning of the disk" "skipping over damaged areas"
this also caused the DVD player to not play on my mac and the DVD player locked up
I then tried selecting "begin from last time played and everything worked fine"
the DVD player did not lock up
this is definitely I feel a bug but i wonder if anyone else has had the similar issue

HD-DVD don't Play on Apple DVD Player

My Business is HD-DVD for Software training.
but, my client complain for about 3 month ago because that HD-DVD (4.7GB) can't play on Mac ( apple DVD Player 5.5 )
first time, we try HVTS folder drop into Apple DVD Player. OK.
but about 10 minute. stop.

The HD-DVD format was abandoned back in 2008.
Apple has abandoned DVD Studio Pro.
If your HD-DVD media is working on a Mac it is a fortunate happenstance.
I would not expect anything related to HD-DVD to be updated, fixed, or improved in any way, shape, or form.
Blu-Ray is the only way to deliver HD video on some sort of disc. There are ways to do this through Compressor but for any sort of control over authoring you would have to look at a non-Mac piece of software.

Apple DVD player cropping Pal DVDs created in DVD Studio Pro

Very strange phenomenon going on here: I own a 17 inch macbook pro, purchased in Canada. I live in the UK now and sometimes am required to make Pal DVDs in DVD Studio Pro. When I do this and pop them in to play, the apple DVD player (in Leopard & Snow Leopard) crops the top and bottom off the 16:9 DVD. When I exit full screen mode and then re-enter it, the DVD appears as it should (without cropping). However, when I produce a Pal DVD in Adobe Encore and do the exact same thing, it always plays perfectly on the first try. This must be some sort of a bug, but it hasn't been reported by anyone on the net. I've tried reinstalling the operating system, as well as deleting the preference files of both DVD Studio Pro and the Apple DVD player. What is going on?

I used to see that too, on my 15" Macbook but put it down to a glitch in the video rendering - it certainly isn's a DVDSP issue, but lots of folk have seen it. Discs that show this on DVD Player should play back fine in a set top box. If they don't there's a further issue to solve!

Apple dvd player / external dvd drive issue

i recently bought a LaCie d2 external dvd drive, since my desktop g4 only has an internal cdr drive. I am running osx 10.4.3, which i installed through this dvd drive. yet now, when i put a DVD movie into the drive and try to open Apple DVD Player, it says
"There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]"
i know this is a third party drive, but can anyone help me out? pleeeease?

This is to be expected. DVD Player will only work
with an external DVD drive if the Mac has an internal
DVD drive.
However you may overcome this limitation using PlayerPatc
h.
I had the same problem as above (error code [-70012])... I downloaded this patch for my LG external DVD/RW Model GSA-2166D and it worked perfectly... can now play DVDs...
It's people like you who make being part of the mac community a joy!
Now I just need to find a patch to get the Light Scribe to work...

Menu buttons not working in Apple DVD Player

I am having a real problem. I have a menu with three buttons. The default button takes you either of the other buttons (depending on whether you press right or down on the remote). These two buttons are auto-action and proceed imediately to other tracks. This works perfectly in home DVD players and in the Apple DVD Player using the "remote". Howver, if I try clicking the buttons using a mouse on the Apple DVD Player window, they DO NOT work! I have buttns over video on the same disc and these work perfectly by clicing on them with the mouse. Has anyone else had a problem like this and if so, have you found a solution? Many thanks!

Is the one that doesn't work a layered menu? DVD Player does not work correctly with layered menus, it takes one click to switch to the selected state, and a second click to activate the button.

Apple DVD Player installers won't recognize Lacie d2 16x4x12x

My eMac has a CDR internal drive only.
I just upgraded to Panther (upgrade disks) and I'm running 10.3.9.
I'm trying to get the Apple installers to recognize the Lacie d2 I just got, so that I can install the Apple DVD player (software update?) or import a DVD player from another machine.
The software won't install because it says it can't detect a proper drive, and the player I imported won't open for the same reason. I tried using Patchburn, Pacifist and the installed Installer on my eMac to no avail.

I believe the Lacie d2 I just got is the previous generation,
no lightscribe. It works great (plug an play) for burning data but I'd really like to use the native Apple DVD player to watch DVD video with the drive. I downloaded the free/open source VLC media player and it seems to work well enough,
but I'm on a mission to use Apple software if possible.
I'm also thinking of upgrading to Tiger soon so I'm wondering if I'll have any corresponding issues there.
Oh, and I did download and install the latest driver was from the Lacie site.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

BTW: here is the fix in case anyone needs it
Follow it exactly, it works !
1. Download and install Pacifist.
2. Insert Mac OS 10.3 CD in drive.
3. Select Open Mac OS X Install Packages button in Pacifist. It will ask you to swap out all three 10.3 install disks.
4. Click the Find button and type "DVD". A long list should show up.
5. The important files/folders to replace are:
-AppleAltiVecDVDDriver.bundle
-ATIRadeon8500DVDDriver (if graphics card is installed)
-ATIRadeon9700DVDDriver (if graphics card is installed)
-ATIRadeonDVDDriver.bundle
-ATIRage128DVDDriver.bundle (if graphics card is installed)
-DVDPlayback.framework
-DVD.framework
-rtadvd
**There are many duplicates of the files/folders above in other languages. I only chose to install English.
6. Select each or all and click Install.
7. Choose to replace all existing files.
8. Restart. Repair permissions.
I didn't bother to try to install only the English versions...just installed and replaced all the items on tha list

I solved this by reset of the Wifi (unplug cable and power to both modem and wifi ... wait 60 sec ... plug in modem cable and power ... plug in wifi power and LAN to modem ... restart AppleTV and Mac ... Turn Home Share 'OFF' in iTunes then back "ON" ... it took ~60 sec for the AppleTV to pick up my Mac in computers.

Scripts works in Simulator and Apple DVD player but not on TV

I have a basic project with two different tracks.
The first one is video and audio. Plays "as is".
The second has video, two audio and one subtitle. Depending on which button, the second Track should be played with different audio and with/without subtitles.
(I use GPRM 1 to set the subs stream, GPRM 2 for the audio and GPRM 3 for menu button navigation).
On the second Track I have a pre-script that sets the streams depending on the value of GPRM 1 and 2.
Works fine in Simulator and in Apple DVD player, but not on the stand-alone player.
Any idea what might be the issue here?
in short:
Button 1: Play Track 1 "as is" (audio 1, no subs)
Button 2: Play Track 2, audio 1, subs on
Button 3: Play Track 2, audio 2, subs off
Button 4: Play Track 2, "as is" (audio 1, subs off)
Menu button and End Jump should go to the corresponding menu button.

It is part personal preference, part artistic, part what makes the user experience the best so there may not be one "right" answer and I have often made menus one way than changed them when viewing the DVD for something that seemed to work better.
Looking at you description I started playing with some ideas in my head and started typing them, then changed what I was writing
It sounds like you want chapter selections for both track 1 and track 2? If so it may make sense to have the initial menu have Track 1 and Track 2 buttons which then link to sub menus where there is "Play All," selections for each section of each movie and one last button for the preferences.
Alternatively you could also place the preferences selection button on the main menu, though since Track 1 does not sound like it really has preferences you need to make sure that users do not become confused and think they have turned something on/off and are not seeing these options when they thought they selected them when they play back Track 1.
Also with 6 to 8 chapter markers you may be getting close to the point where scripting could make it easier if your selections are just to play the sections - in other words for track 2 four stories take care of the combinations Audio 1/Sub Off, Audio 1 Subs On, Audio 2 Subs Off, Audio 2 Sub On. If the chapter selection starts the track a scene then plays through you can target chapter markers in the story so 4 stories takes care of it. If you are just playing sections you would need 4 x 6 or 8 chapters - 24 or 32 stories roughly. But it is actually fairly quick to do - just set up the intial Play All with all subtitles and audio selections unchecked except for "1" then copy from there. Probably should take under 10-15 minutes or so

The main menu will be the title menu, then the sub-menus (including the set up menus) can be placed in the same VTS as the applicable tracks which can help a bit with DVD performance speed. Since there is 6 to 8 chapter markers on a track each of the main sub-menus would have 8-10 buttons which can work in the design.

Can you change the hotkeys in Apple DVD Player?

I'm trying to change the hotkeys in Apple DVD Player. Really, all I want to do is add a hotkey for slow motion. I need the hotkeys because I'm using a ShuttleXpress shuttle mouse and I want to beable to click a button to put it in slow motion instead of having to use the normal mouse. Thanks

you can easily assign a keyboard shortcut to slow motion in keyboard system preferences->keyboard shortcuts. however what you want is not a shortcut but a reassignment of a mouse button. the only tool I know that might be able to do that is [USB overdrive|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7115]. you'll have to find out if it works with your particular mouse.

Invisible Auto Action Buttons not clickable in Apple DVD player

I've put some Easter Eggs in my menus which are invisible and auto-action.
In simulator, you can access them with the controller by pressing a particular arrow button from a particular selected menu item. They are also accessible by clicking directly on them with the mouse.
But in Apple DVD player they are only accessible with the controller; clicking on them with the mouse doesn't work.
Is this just a limitation of Apple DVD player?

If you've set them to be Invisible why would you expect them to be clickable. The whole point surely is that they are Invisible.

Subtitles Work in simulator but are wrong in Apple DVD player

OK I have used scripts to set one of two subtitle tracks (French or English) and another script to jump to a play once or a looping version of the video track. One menu selects the subtitle language and another menu selects the single or loop play option.
In the simulator it all works as expected, I can see that the SPRM and GPRM values are correct for the functions I have set. The SPRM 2 values are correct for the subtitle tracks and they are copied to a GPRM register so the correct language slideshow is played before the video track.
However when I do a build and play that in the Apple DVD player only the English subtitle appears no matter what language is selected. The correct language slideshow is played for either language selected but I always see the english subtitles when it jumps to the video.
Would this be a problem with the Apple DVD player software or could there be a problem with some of my scripting?
I have used the Set System Stream command to select the subtitle tracks and the Set GPRM and Compare commands to jump to the correct language slideshow.
Any advice gratefully received.

After endless hours of trying to work around the same problem you have, I found the solution. The problem has to do with the script. For some strange reason the scripts become corrupted. I found out that the problem was corrected when I made a new script and connected the buttons to the new script. Hope they at apple find time to correct this problem in the future.

Missing lower 25% of the screen ONLY in Apple DVD player

Hi everybody,
I just made a showreel DVD (1 menu, 1 video track) in DVD SP 3.02. It plays back correctly on all dvd players (stand alone, PC) except Apple DVD Player: it strechtes the menu and the video vertically so it's missing the lower 25% of the screen. When I press 'pause' while the video is playing, and then 'play' again, it jumps to the correct aspect ratio. But after ejecting and inserting it again, the same problem appears. I really want to solve this problem, because a lot of my clients use their apple laptop to watch the dvd. Is there a setting I'm missing?
Here are the specs:
- Movie in FCP (DV PAL, 720x576)
- Export using Compressor, 60 minutes high quality encode
- To DVD studio Pro 3.02, PAL, 4:3

Thanks for your reply, but the problem hasn't been solved yet. There are no assets in my menu (only a small button with text, in the center of the screen), and my video is already 720x576.
I do get some warnings when I build/format my DVD. After it says 'compile completed succesfully' and before it starts formatting, it says this:
Warning: The directory ‘/Users/ward/Desktop/test2/VIDEO_TS/Render Data’ will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘VOB_DATA.LAY’ found in the VIDEO_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘WARD.layout’ found in the VIDEO_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Could this have anything to do with it?

SCC file quirks when viewed in Apple DVD Player

Greetings all,
I have a bunch of DVDs with closed captioning that I am implementing by importing scc files. Everything works fine and looks gereat on set top players and even most software players running Windows. However, on the Mac running Apple DVD Player 4.0 or higher (OS X), there are a bunch of quirks during CC playback. Among them are:
1. First and second lines of CC swap places (second line appears above first line)
2. First line doesn't appear at all, but second line does.
3. First line appear at top of screen while second line appears at the bottom.
These issues are showing up on multiple projects using burnt discs (not builds or in simulator). Again, the CC look fine on set top machines and on PCs running Windows.
Is this an issue with DVDSP? With Apple DVD Player? Or with the SCC files I'm working with? The files were delivered from the caption house and I have no way of opening them to look at the formatting.

I haven't seen this abberation but I am in PAL land. It doesn't surprise me though. DVD Player has numerous issues with adhering to the spec. If you are happy with the playback on all but a Mac I would proceed. If you are really worried when you go to replication you can have this looked at by the engineers ie through MEI or their in house testing systems.
Your caption supplier will also be able to examine the integrity of your VIDEO_TS build.
For future reference most captioning houses can supply you with the encoded mpeg rather than relying on DVDSP.
