Bug in Archive & Network Copy

Today using time capsule i've noticed some bugs in the archive of finder. When I zip up a large amount of files (all together ~50,000 files and 1.4GB) the archive progress window starts at 0KB and counts up to 1.4GB coinciding with the progress bar. However, every once in a while the count goes from say 500MB down to 120KB and starts counting up again, without the progress bar changing, and my archive finished being created with the progress bar only half way done.
None of the files being compressed were in use. No other applications we're running.

So, so far it crashes 2009 SP1, 2010 SP1, 2011 SP1, and it works on 2010 (no service pack).
It also crashes on another version of LabVIEW which can't be discussed in the public forums

  • Import from camera archive without copying files?

I created a few camera archives from DV tapes. Is there a way to import footage from the archive without copying (duplicating) the files into the Events Folder? The option is greyed out on the import window.
When I open the archive package contents I can see all the .mov files, so I'm hoping there's a way to create a reference file instead of duplicating the file.  I'm trying to save some hard drive space.
    Thanks.

When you are copying from a hard drive that does not access the camera import function of the import window. The purpose of an archive is as a backup, to keep a separate set of media which cannot get corrupted by use or computer or drive failure. Generally it's in a separate drive from that used directly in production.

  • Network Copy Bug

A weird and unpleasant near miss happened to me recently. I have been gradually ripping my DVDs and copying VHS tapes and ancient Laserdisks, to a shared drive attached to a headless Mac Mini on my home network. I've been doing it for months and the end is in sight, about 3TB later. There are multiple FireWire drives chained to the Mini and Carbon Copy Cloner is set to copy one to another regularly. Paranoia pays. I also keep an offsite copy on yet another drive.
My MBP runs 10.9.1, and the Mini is still at 10.8.5.
I mounted one of the shared drives on my MBP wirelessly to copy some files, but realized they were larger than I had thought and would take hours. So I stopped the copy and waited and waited while the copy dialog box claimed to be "Stopping..." After a couple of minutes I assumed it would be OK to click on the incompletely copied file on the remote disk and delete it. Got the usual "This file will be deleted immediately" dialog and said OK. Then watched in horror as one by one, all the folders on the remote disk disappeared.
I had not selected all of them, just the incompletely copied file.
Fortunately I had just done a backup to one of the other drives, so 15 hours later I had restored the disk without losing my last few days worth of laserdisc recordings.
Is this the kind of issue one can expect from 10.9 trying to network with 10.8, a dangerous bug in OS X, or simply my own fault for trying to delete a file whose copying hadn't properly stopped? I am not going to try to recreate it! Today I have upgraded the MacMini to 10.9 in case it prevents this in the future.

  • Bug: Auto-archive does not work in Outlook 2010

The Auto-Archive feature does not seem to work. In my case, I'm creating a mail folder in my inbox and setting the auto archival to "2 weeks, then delete". I run Auto Archival manually. It seems to progress without any error, but I know better.
It should take the process more than a few minutes to process the mail I have stored up for almost a year. No error and my mail has been untouched.
I noticed this thread in the Outlook 2010 beta forums
I'm having the same issue. I'd like this bug fixed if possible? I keep archival folders to manage my mail.

    Hi Canovac,
Auto Archive works as expected in my environment.   I noticed you said that you created a new mail folder in your inbox.  Did you just create the folder and move the mail to that folder?  Auto archive looks at modified date and if you
move the mail to that folder that changed the modified date so the mail will not archive.
To determine the modified date, do the following:
While on the folder in question:
Click View > View Settings > Columns
In the Select available columns from dropdown choose
All Mail Fields locate Modifed in the Available colums: and click
    Add
If the mail has not been modified within the last two week span, please test the following for me.
Start Outlook with the /safe switch and then run Auto-Archive.
Does auto-archive work when starting with the /safe switch?

  • ADSL / router slowed Network copying ? help ?

I have 5 computers on a small network: 3 Macs (OS 9.2.2) and 2 Windows PCs and a networked printer connected using a 8 port switching Hub. The PCs are accessed using Dave's Network 6 on Mac (3) . Each computer and the printer has its own TCP/IP address.
I recently subscribed to Telus ADSL internet following the prompts on their CD. The Internet Mac (1) is isolated by a DLink DI-604 4 port router as the network firewall. I set up the DLink DI-604 according to its instructions.
It worked, I could access the internet and share files between the Macs, except copying files between the Internet Mac (1) and the other 2 Macs was very slow, any file over 300k would take 9 minutes, larger files above that might take 20 minutes or longer.
Copying between the other Macs (2 and 3) is ok.
I removed the Dlink Di-604, reset TCP/IP to local file sharing via TCP/IP and put the network back to where it was before this fiasco started.
Sharing files between the Macs is fine except copying files between the Internet Mac (1) and the other 2 Macs is still very slow, files larger than 500k result in long delays.
The files arrive on the receiving Macs in reasonably prompt fashion, but the sending Internet Mac (1) File Copying Window seems to freeze up in a 15 minute delay.
This project got very complex very quickly, if you have any ideas or suggestions please advise as trying to get any work done is very difficult.
    Power Mac G4 350 Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hopefully fixed problem myself
I made careful note of the TCP/IP settings and BRAVELY chucked out all the Telus internet stuff I could find.
Copying between Macs still didint work.
So I re-installed the OS 9.2.2 software from CD disk. SUCCESS copying is now working !!
It seems the Phone company's (Telus) supplied CD software wrecked my Mac's operating system. Telus claims they are aware of the problem (but they probably didnt want to confuse potential customers with scary stories)

  • GUI Bug / Suggestion - View Network Connection Settings

I'm currently running Windows Server Technical Preview in a VMware Workstation environment.  When I click on the network icon in the system tray, and then proceed to click on "View Network Connection Settings", nothing happens.  Is this
    a bug?
I know in the desktop OS this opens PC Settings which doesn't exist in Server, but it makes sense for this button to link to "Network Connections" or even "Network and Sharing Center" in Server.

Enable Desktop Experience. Server with a GUI is not the full GUI, you need to enable Desktop Experience (on User Interface options), Fax Server (for Windows Fax and Scan), Server Backup, wireless, XPS Viewer and GUI for Windows Defender, to make use of
the full graphical experience. Some shortcuts and elements in the GUI make sense only after you activate thoose functions. Windows Server seems a modified version of Windows client x64, more or less, some leftovers from the client origin still remain
in the server version. Some client features are present, but turned off by default, if you want to experiment, you can enable them. Windows Server can become very close to the Windows client, if you know what to turn on.

  • Archive file copy

    Dear all,
    db:10.2.0.3
    o/s:Red Hat Linux 4
I have created a cron job to back the archivefiles using traditional cp command not using rman for this.I want to know when the cp command i executed and the oracle archiver is writing archive file what will happen will that archive file gets corruppted or i will not have any issues?
    Regards

The file that Arch is writing to won't be corrupted. But the file that has been copied out -- i.e. the backup that has been created by your script -- would be incomplete -- the same as being corrupt.
When I used to write such scripts, I would have the scripts order the ArchiveLogs by Sequence# (which is part of the file name) and then not copy the last 4 archivelogs. Why 4 ? Because, although you generally have only 1 ArchiveLog being written to, when it is busy the database instance can start of multiple archivelog processes (based on LOG_ARCHIVE_MAX_PROCESSES), each of which is archiving out one redo log. Since 10g, this behaviour is automated and not controllable.
Therefore, I urge you not to write such scripts. Use RMAN. It has a COPY command that can be used to copy out archivelogs, if you do not wish to use the BACKUP command.

  • Cant open boot archive after copying Solaris 10 from one machine to another

    We are running "Solaris 10 3/05 s10_74L2a" on a Sun Fire 480R.
I tried to, using ufsdump to copy the filesysem to a T5220 which has 4 disks, the first 2 disks are a mirrored os of a Solaris 10 version already there.
So I restored the ufs inages to the 3rd disk, ran installboot with the bootblock from the restored image for s sun Fire 480R as there did not appear to be a bootblock for a T5220 , as its a more recent server.
    ie:
    installboot /mnt/usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c1t2d0s0
    /mnt/usr/platform/SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise-T5220/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk: File not found
so I do this instead :
    installboot /mnt/usr/platform/SUNW,Sun-Fire-480R/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c1t2d0s0
Now then I try to boot I get :
Boot device: /pci@0/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0/disk@2 File and args:
    ufs-file-system
    Loading: /platform/sun4v/boot_archive
    Loading: /platform/sun4v/boot_archive
    Can't open boot_archive
    Evaluating:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
but, as far as I know this old version of Solaris did not use a boot archive and there is no directory /platform/sun4v/boot_archive in the restored files, nor on the original server.
So, my question is, if the old version of os did not support a boot-archive, why is this restored image, when I boot , giving this error.
Surely all the data on the 3rd disk should be the same as on the old server.!!
What am I missing here ??
    George

Well, you can't just copy an OS from one type of system to another and expect it to work. For one thing the OS communicates with its hardware through the /dev/ and /devices layer, and that layer will be completely different when you transfer it to another system.
Second of all the lack of boot block for the T5220 in your installation indicates that your version of Solaris 10 does not support the T5220 platform, which probably means that it will be impossible to boot completely on it anyway..
I'm not sure when the SPARC systems started to use the boot-archive..
Anyway, the two things you have missed is to create the boot-archive (with bootadm update-archive -R /mnt), and to run devfsadm on the new platform (devfsadm -r /mnt ).
Even so, there is no guarantee that your version of Solaris actually supports your hardware.. But i guess that's documented in the Sun System Hardware Handbook..

  • Missing Files During Network Copy?

I have recently copied data files (mostly pdf) from my windows machine to my iMac via my network when I got my new computer.
Tonight, I noticed some files that I viewed the other day on my Mac were mysteriously gone?
Being that, I verified that my old machine still had the original files that were supposedly missing. So, to ensure that I had all my files I zipped the original folder on my old computer and copied back to the Mac to a new directory. When I unzipped on the iMac, the files in question are missing again in the new directory.
What am I doing wrong? I am concerned because I have quite a bit of data that I switched over and I'm not really sure what might be missing.
    Any ideas are appreciated.

It appears that if you try to copy directly from My Documents on the Mac, certain files are not copied.
Why some files are copied and other are not I have no clue but I simply logged into my windows machine and copied directly to my Mac and that seemed to work.

  • Error message: network copying over 31 characters not allowed, no ownership

I have a MacBook Pro and a Mac Mini on a wired home network. The mini has an outboard USB drive mounted.
I backup the MacBook Pro to that drive. I did this by turning Appleshare on on the Mini, and turning on personal file sharing. I then connect to it from the MacBook Pro by going to the Network prefs pane.
I use Silverkeeper to backup. Until yesterday all of this worked fine. Yesterday I removed the outboard drive from the Mini and added two other USB drives. Both were new, and I formatted both as Mac OS extended (Journaled).
Now, when I try to run Silverkeeper to backup to either of those new drives, I receive a message telling me that copying to the drive ("a Server (AppleShare) volume") may lose some functionality:
    - files over 2GB are not supported
    - Ownerships & Permissions not supported
    - Names over 31 chars not supported
    Hunh?
I don't understand why this just started happening, but it looks like an OS issue. Anyone?

Hmmm, with those limits, it seems that it thinks it's an HFS volume instead of HFS+, or HFS+ formatted under Mac OS 9/Mac OS 8 that only supports file sizes of up to 2 GB in size.
And Anthony has some good advice/comments on the connection method, seems HFS+ via NFS has some of those limits.
I use FW drives on most of my Networks, but some USB, and NDAS drives, and use Tri-Backup, never see this probem...

  • T420 Network copy & message center problems

    Dear All,
The company where I work gave me a new T420 thinkpad, but there are 3 problems with it.
    Op. system: Windows 7 SP1 64bit
    I have 3 problems:
    1. When I would like to copy files to network, the copying process is freezing, and do not do anything. The pop-up window says: "calculating". And that is all.
I have the latest intel drivers. I use wired (lan) connection via company network with Symantec Endpoint Protection software.
    2. The password manager starts twice, when windows starts with the "about" pop-up window, where you can see the information about the software. My problem is that I can not close this window, only via the windows process manager
    3. Question: How message center can be uninstalled?
Thank you for your help in advance.

Is the Windows 7 client an unmanged install? If so, you can modif the firewall on the client side.

  • Difference between archive or copy iphoto library

When you control click on the iphoto library you get the choice to "create archive of 'iphoto library' or copy 'iphoto library". How are these different and when would you use one over the other?

Creating an archive of it produces a compressed zip file. Copying it places a pointer to it in the clipboard; if you then paste into a new Finder window, an additional uncompressed copy of the library is created at that location. Pasting to a location which doesn't accept files will only produce the folder's name.

  • Maverick's Finder bug when downloading or copying ?

Since the Maverick update I have 2 bugs : one major and one less important but still wanted to see if I am the only one with this happening...
The major bug is about the scrolling and I won't go into into details because their are already lots and lots of posting regarding that major major bug.
The second bug happens when either telecharging any kind of file or when compying any kind of file on the desktop ....the thumbnail which sort of tells us it's done never shows up even though the file has downloaded or been copied.
I get something like this .....and it stays like that even after being installed or moved elsewhere...weird huh !?
Am I the only one ?

  • Scanning on a network copier/scanner

I can print to our Canon 5050 copier/scanner. But when I try to scan using Acrbat XI Pro the Canon is not a choice. It is on out network. Is there a way to scan from the canon using Acrobat XI Pro?

The requisite drivers that Acrobat needs are not available.
Many Canon network printer/scanner models have a built in create PDF feature.
Typically the Canon device can email the PDF to you (after you enter your email as required - see the user manual).
Or, the scanned image output file or created PDF can be placed in a designated, network accessed folder (again, see the user manual).
But, back to your question -- I'm saying "no" -- but, again, do a close read of the user manual.
    Be well...

  • Why the slow network copy (USB Ethernet 7-10Mbps)?

    I have the fllowing setup:
MBA running 10.5 - USB Ethernet (100Mbps) - Netgear 1000/100 ethernet hub - 1000MBps Ethernet on Mac mini C2D running 10.5 Server. The ethernet speed between MBA and mini should be 100Mbps. There is nothing else going on on the local LAN.
I am copying a huge file (Parallels volume) with rsync via ssh from MBA to mini, On the mini it goes to a FW400 connected fast Rocstor drive.
The speed I am getting during the copy is 680kB/s, which probably translates to something like 7-10Mbps raw ethernet speed with all the package overhead.
What I am wondering is this: Why is this so slow?
Message was edited by: Gerben Wierda

I am using rsync because I am synchronizing a (say) 27GB directory with many files with another machine and I do not want to copy everything every time I want to synchronize.
I tried different forms of transport:
    - using the Finder to copy to a shared drive. This goes at a speed of 759kB/s or around 7Mbps.
    - a direct scp from the MBA to the /tmp drive of the OS X Server (so no firewire drive involved) and the speed was around 800kBps, so again around 7Mbps.
    - Using ftpd on the server:
    - A local copy on the server via the network with ftp from /tmp to /tmp ran at 21MB/s, so around 180Mbps.
    - A remote copy from MBA to /tmp on the server ran at 680kB/s or around 6Mbps.
Basically, it seems that so far whatever method I use, I can't get it above 7Mbps on a 100Mbps interface when going from MBA via ethernet to the OS X Server.
