Bug in Chinese input (Pinyin Simplified)

Hello, I think I've found a bug in the OS' language input for Chinese input. It just doesn't seem to like writing the combination of letters 'zhe'. This is really annoying, as these letters spell the Mandarin for 'This', amongst other things, so I want to use it quite a lot. Every time I try to write 'zhe' using 'Pinyin- Simplified' it works fine for the first two letters, then when I type 'e' it beachballs and then just writes the English letter 'e' instead of giving me a choice of characters spelt 'zhe'. The 'zh' just disappears. Any more writing is just rendered in the English alphabet, despite the symbol for Pinyin- Simplified being displayed on the menu bar, unless I switch out and in of input languages. Resetting in this way doesn't cure the problem. This only seems to happen for 'zhe' as far as I can discover - 'zhou', 'zhi' 'zhang' etc. render in Chinese just fine.
Perhaps someone could test this on their machine, and let me know whether it's a problem with my computer or the OS, and give me suggestions on how to fix it, if possible? I'd be grateful for any help.

I can't duplicate your problem with 这 or 你。But I am only on 10.6.3.

  • "u" umlaut (ü) for Pinyin- Simplified input

To find the chinese character for "woman" (女) you must type in the pinyin word "nü". To do that in English, I follow these directions:I type the letter "n" and then hold down "option" and "u"(for umlaut) which creates the umlaut. Then I type "u" under the umlaut and I see "nü".
When I do that with the Pinyin-Simplified input, the letter "n" opens the candidate window, which lists all characters beginning with "n", of which nü is listed as number 72. This is my inconvenient work-around.
If I type in "n", and then "option" and "u", the candidate window disappears and the ü replaces the "n". If I type in "nu" with no umlaut, then no character for woman/nü shows.
How do I type "nü" for Pinyin-Simplified and have the candidate window show me the character options, of which "nü" in this form,(女), should be the first character listed.

V is the standard convention to represent ü in pinyin input systems I think.

  • OS X Mountain Lion no longer supports pinyin Chinese input with tones?

I use Macbook Air. Since updated to OS X Mountain Lion, I don't seem to be able to input Chinese using Pinyin with tones, both in Simplified and Traditional versions. For example to type "蘋果電腦“, I used to type ping2guo3dian4nao3 <space> to get that, but in the new OS, pingguodiannao<space> to get that. I like tones because tones can narrow down the subsets of choices for Chinese characters during typing. In general, that should speed up typing Chinese. Also, it's a better way for me to learn Mandarin tones are essential part of the language.
Not sure I missed some settings so this is still available in the new OS...
    Thank you.

This problem is a huge disadvantage for typing in Chinese. Apple has recently touted Mountain Lion's pinyin input as being superior (i.e. quicker) when mixing English and Chinese in the same sentence. However, if you're typing Chinese words in isolation from other Chinese characters the lack of context and inability to choose a tone leaves you with hundreds (for some characters) of choices. Scrolling through the tone choices with option+tab is a slower alternative than simply typing them and it really seems to me that while Microsoft has improved pinyin input with each new OS release, Apple has taken us backwards with this one.

  • Simplified Chinese input problem

I recently update mac air, but the simplified Chinese input is disabled. Can someone help please?
    Thank you!

Go to system preferences/keyboard/input sources and try deleting your Chinese input sources.  Then restart and try adding them back in.
A further approach is to reinstall you OS.

  • Now on iOS 5.1.1 - Chinese Input STILL not working 3+ years later

I have just updated to iOS 5.1.1 and after ONE day I already have to restore my iPad.  This is, of course, after reinstalling all kinds of apps and getting data back into my programs.
I added several languages to the keyboard options but everytime I tried to change from English (the default) to another one (almost always Chinese Pinyin) it would crash.
So I thought I had too many languages installed.  So I uninstalled every single one except English and Chinese Pinyin.
The Chinese Pinyin would STILL crash.  So stupidly (I say this because Apple doesn't think to add "safety nets" to their bugs) I removed English and left ONLY Chinese Pinyin.
Now when I go into ANY program and "click" on a text box, the app will crash.  Every single app (except Spotlight, strangely enough.)
The worst part is, when I open Settings and go to Keyboard, the Settings app immediately crashes, so there is literally NOTHING I can do at this point.
Here we are on iOS 5 and the problems with Chinese Input (and many other foreign languages) are NOT fixed.  Actually this seems to have gotten worse because now my iPad won't even function without a restore.
This is disgusting.  I have read MANY complaints about this in ENGLISH forums.  Imagine the 10's of millions of Chinese people that have purchased iOS devices and are facing these problems.  I guess Apple is forcing them to type in English?  I guess Apple doesn't understand that just as many people type in Chinese as English?
When is this going to be fixed?
Does anyone have a quick solution to access the Keyboard section of my Settings to "fix" the problem (remove Chinese Pinyin and live without it again)?
I use my iPad for 2 things: to read my school textbooks (mostly pdf format, using GoodReader which is an excellent program) and for studying Chinese.  Well guess I can't study Chinese.  Thanks for not fixing a problem that has been going on for 3+ years, Apple!  Glad I'm using an Android phone that doesn't have these kind of problems.  After the iPad dies, I will definitely switch to an Android tablet.  What a joke.

I was having the same problem few minutes ago. Here's the solution I found. You have to do these settings in all your apple devices (ie: iPhone, iPad, etc). In your iPad: first got to Settings, then to messages (make sure iMessage slider button is ON), the go to Receive at, then in the apple ID you have to sign in with your full email address (not your short apple ID) the same one you use in iCloud, iTunes, etc, then after you put your password your are sign in with your iMessage account.
After that go to You can be reached for messages at, and then enter you full email address and since you are already signed in your email address will be verified in your device. In you iPhone use your cell number instead an email address since most of your contacts know your phone number, but you have a choice to use your email address instead with your phone. So it's up to you what you wanna use.
Rememeber you also have to do this same procedure with Facetime to work with all you devices. To test Facetime i called my iPhone with my new iPad and voila...it worked. Good luck trying these settings.

  • Why my chinese input app fails?

When I switch from English Input to Chinese Input, I can't input anything to several apps including Mails, QQ, Evernote.
But I can input Chinese in Chrome and other apps.
Not only character keys are disabled, number keys and delete key are also disabled.

    Thanks for your attention.
    It works well in TextEdit.
I've tried Simplified Pinyin (the original Chinese IM included in OS) and Sogou Pinyin IM, but neither work.
Til now, only Mails, QQ and Evernote are affected. However, if I set English IM before I open QQ app and switch to Chinese IM after QQ's setup, Chinese IM becomes OK. But this doesn't appear in Mails and Evernote.
I tried to create a new account but the same problem appears.

  • Chinese input in Gnome via scim

I really love this distrobution. Its fast lean and mean. However, I am having trouble with Chinese fonts and especially Chinese input via scim. I have installed the required packages, but it still doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have clear, step-by-step instructions to install and configure scim with both Traditional and Simplified characters? I believe that any clear instructions for setting up Chinese input via scim would also benefit other non-native English speakers, as, scim provides an input system for a variety of languages including Japanese, Korean, Thai, etc... Just an idea for the Arch maintainers... Relatively hassle-free internationalization IS a good idea.

  • Traditional Chinese input method

I would like to suggest more Chinese input methods should be added in the iPhone 3G.
FOr example, Traditional Chinese 'Jianyi' - 'Simplex', this is more convenient to use than 'pinyin'.
I hope that this will be covered in the new update.

how do you change to chinese input method?

But firefox works fine on other computers, i can write in chinese in firefox on other cumputers.

I have pavucontrol and I see the audio sources appearing when playback starts.
When I have one audio source playing and I start another, for a fraction of second the sound skips and cracks as if part of the sound buffer got corrupted.
EDIT: I just realized another thing : I have the same setup: I start audacious, push play, music plays, then I start gnome-music, push play, hear skip/corruption/crackle. Now the gnome-music plays the song, I pause the song and realize the volume of audio stream from audacious went down. When I close gnome-music, it gets restored again. I am not sure whether this could be the cause. Also I this probably shouldn't happen at all - I mean the audio should be suppressed during notification sounds but not during playback from another app, right?

  • HT5176 What languages are the chinese input methods associated with?

In the help file for iOS Dictation the following paragraph regards to selecting language for dictation
When you want to change the language used for Dictation:
Tap the globe icon to change to the keyboard for that language.
Tap the microphone icon to start Dictation.
Note: To use Dictation, the keyboard language needs to be a supported language. Dictation is designed to recognize the specific accents and dialects of the supported countries listed above. Since every language has its own accents and dialects, the accuracy rate will be higher for native speakers.
Now there are couple chinese input methods for simplified or traditional chinese typing.  However, which one relates to "cantonese"? They both use the same characters but with different pronunciation.

Following up, here is the situation:
Using "Chinese Traditional - Changjie" as input method,
1, dictation WILL listen as Cantonese if SIRI is set to Cantonese-Hong Kong
2, dictation defaults to Mandarin if SIRI is set to English
Further testing concluded that regardless of the input method, as long as Siri is set to Cantonese-Hong Kong the dictation can listen to cantonese, and otherwise it cannot.
Is there a way to individually toggle dictation language?

  • New interface of Chinese Input Method

I don't know if there were any other Chinese / Taiwanese people here on the Apple Communities but I really hated the new input method.
the iOS4 interface of Chinese input method is way better.
i wonder if there were any way i can change it back to the former one???
if there were no way to fix it by oneself ; I hope Apple can changed it back.
btw, does anyone know how to send an advice or suggestion to Apple on certain issue like this??
thanks for anyone who answer my question.

For some strange reason, Apple has decided to replace the old Chinese Handwriting "keyboard" with the new Chinese Stroke "keyboard" when you upgrade to iOS 5. The old input method is actually still there - just go into Settings / General / International Keyboards / Add New Keyboard and select Chinese Traditional (or Simplified) Handwriting. I am using an iPad 2 but hopefully it is the same for an iPhone.

  • 6288 Traditional Chinese input?

Does anyone know if I can get Traditional Chinese input for my 6288?
Currently my 6288 only has the following input languages: English, Simplified Chinese and Malayu. However, I really need Traditional Chinese input. Is there any way I can get it on my phone?
Pls help me in this. Thank you.

The only way to do that is to take the phone to a Nokia Service Center and ask them to load firmware onto the phone that supports Traditional Chinese input.

  • No Traditional Chinese Input!!!!

It's an outrage only Simplified Chinese input method is supported. The majority of the US Chinese population, not to mention a very large world population use Traditional Chinese.
Traditional Chinese input methods are already on iPhones and iPod Touch, why doesn't Apple port it to iPad?
Make your opinion known and post followup so Apple will pay attention!

Being able to "read and write both" does not mean the ability to understand it. I'm sure you can "read and write" English, but I'm sure that not everyone in the US knows what "going to the loo" means; hence the cultural difference between the 2 speakers.
I can read and write both Traditional and Simplified Chinese, and I've played with the Simplified Chinese on my iPad, being a Traditional Chinese writer, "bee-hive digital" does not mean "Cellular Data" to me in any way shape or form.
Logically, the interface to input would be the same for the iphone and the ipad, where as the iphone does suppose Traditional Chinese. I just don't understand it was left out.

  • Rime Chinese Input Set Keyboard Layout

    Hello,
I am trying to install rime chinese input. Unfortunately I have a keyboard with a QWERTZ-Layout, which I am very accustomed to. I am using rime in Gnome Shell. Is there any way to keep the German keyboard layout whilst switching to rime? My chinese is not very good, so I hope this forum appropriate for this question.
    Any help is welcome.
    Edit:
I solved it for the while by tweaking the rime.xml in /usr/share/ibus/component/

i use fcitx-rime, you can change the layout for rime in the input method configuration panel while not change you system layout.
