Bug in Column view?

I’ve found that in services that I create anew not ones that are available from Apple, I can’t use keyboard shortcuts that I’ve created for those services in column view but can in list or icon view. For example, I just created a service called ‘create clean archive’ using Automator and I could not use the keyboard shortcut I assigned for it in column view but could when it was in list or icon view. Can anyone confirm or is it just me?

Can anyone confirm or is it just me?
Need to know what shortcuts you're using to test, no?
Column view has a few unique keyboard shortcuts using Shift, Tab (also Shift-Tab) and arrow keys.

  • Finder column view rendering bug

    See attached image.
Quite often I get this rendering bug. It has been around since Mac OS X Lion and is still occuring in Mountain Lion.
The only way to fix the rendering bug is to switch to another type of view and them back to the columns view.
    Can anybody confirm this bug?

I've never noticed  this before. Here is another discussion on the same topic--no solution there either:

  • In Lion 10.7.5 is there a way to view files in alphabetical order in column view?

In Lion 10.7.5 when viewing files/folders in column view, if I select arrange by name it does not sort the names alphabetically.  Is this a bug or is there a way to view files in alphabetical order in column view?

I've been using Column View for years and have it set to None:
It has always shown in alphabetical order automatically.

  • File Open dialogs in column view do not sort by name

Any app in OSX that has a Save dialog file browser, some (but not all) of my folders are not sorted alphabetically in column view.
Here's how it looks in Safari when I save:
Here are my sort options from within that save menu:
It's sorted perfectly in FInder when you open a Finder window. Here are the view options in Finder:
Any idea what's going on here?

  • Finder still retains "only in column view" setting from Tiger...

I know they removed this preference completely in Leopard, but every time I open a new Finder window, it is always in column view. That's because I had used that option in Tiger (Always open in column view". Now since that preference is removed it's basically stuck always opening it in column view no matter what I do to change it. Any suggestions?

    thank god i'm not alone.
Leopard is loaded with bugs, a very big disappointment.
i noticed the same problems you're experiencing.
in addition, the 'Secure Empty Trash' feature hangs the system when deleting large files, causing a forced shutdown.
after restarting, the 'Secure Empty Trash' feature will sometimes complete the deletion process without hanging.
there's plenty more to talk about, and i hope apple gets on top of these issues asap

No it's not a bug, Oracle will treat "datab" as alias to "dataa" if comma left out.
Doesn't your view has two columns id and datab, but datab column showing dataa data?

  • Finder bug in icon view. can anyone help me?

So, I'm experiencing a weird bug since I've installed OS X Mountain Lion.
When I set 'show items as icons' in Finder, the font used to label the files and folders are most of the time kinda messed up.
(they're not the normal black clean fonts, but they are like a really pale ugly and hard to read gray color)
And it's not like I'm using different fonts of whatever, it's a font smoothing/rendering issue.
If I turn off the 'Use LCD font smoothing when available', fonts are OK again.
The problem is that when I enter another folder, they are messed up again. Then I enable again the font smoothing option and they are ok (for that folder).
When I go back to the parent folder, they are gray again.
Also, when I make them "OK" with the LCD font option switch, they also become "NOT OK" as soon as I select them. (not individually, but making a box...yeah, weird uh?)
Really weird. I've tried to restart/ force quit the finder (which again, fix the issue just within the home folder) / adjust permission (maybe I've messed up something, I dunno).
Btw, it is not a clean install and I remember experiencing the same problem with Lion, one of the first days I've installed it, but then it went away (forever) after a day, so I didn't bother too much to find the cause.
Again, it seems like some sort of finder bug, the million question is: Why am I (apparently) the only one experiencing it? Thx for help

    Hi Giorgiovdb!
Unfortunately I cannot help you; all I did was test for you.
I did an upgrade over my Lion install with Mountain Lion which went fine. I just tested icon view in my Finder on different files and folders and here in my installation all stays fine; good readable like in column view!
The only thing you might try is change your Font in Finder and set it back to the original afterwards!
I quickly Google'd how to change fonts in the Finder as appearantly there's no obvious gui item for it:
    http://usermanifest.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/osx-finder-title-bar-font/
Try to see if it brings you anywhere!
At my post all fonts act normal after my upgrade to Mountain Lion; I don't do a clean install unless I really have to!
    Goodluck!

  • Long delay selecting Application or Document in Finder column view.

    MacBook
    OS 10.4.11
In the Finder in column view when I select an application or a document (folders are fine) the rainbow pinwheel comes up and it takes a minute or two to show the item in the preview pane. Once there it works.
Also, when I am in an App like MAIL and I want to attach a file to an email I encounter the same delay when I navigate to the item I want to attach.
This all began when I bought and installed Final Cut Express and did all the recommended software updates from SOFTWARE UPDATE.
On a related note, FCE has an odd little bug that makes the first few frames of a clip solid green. Not sure if that's related or not.
So there you have it. As far as I can tell I've installed everything properly and SOFTWARE UPDATE says I'm good to go.
    Your help is appreciated.

Hi brudly, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

  • Column view not peristent in mail smart folders

I use a smart folder which displays multiple actual folders; I enable the mailbox column, but as soon as I move to another folder and back, the column becomes disabled.
I assume from some other old messages that this is the intended default behavior and not a bug. Does anyone know whether there is a way to ensure persistent column settings, and if not, if this is a planned fix for the next version of mail.app?
    Thanks very much.
(searching: persistent column views in mail; View > Columns > Mailbox)

I'd love to know too, but can't seem to find out how.
This seems like a major oversight/quirk.
I have to adjust the column widths often -- otherwise they bounce back.
I have this in the Inbox, not just Smart Folders.

  • Finder in Column View always auto arranged by Date Modified

My preferred default view is always Column View with Arranged By Kind, Sort By Name.
Many times when I navigate around folders, it automatically switch to Arrange By Date Modified. This is very annoying, I have to either go back to previous folder and back again, or right click to switch back to Arrange By Kind.
This has been happening for long time, not just in Maverick but previous versions too.

No solutions for this known bug?

  • "Always open in column view" does not hold

"Always open in column view" does not hold the preference when applied to my hard drive.
I select Macintosh HD and choose the column view. I go to View > Open View Options and check "Always open in column view". Then if I click on a different folder and go back to Macintosh HD, column view is retained... that is until I restart the computer.
After a restart, when I click on Macintosh HD I am back to icon view. Again I go to View > Open View Options, and somehow the preference has changed to "Always open in icon view". If I switch back to column view, the preference is retained again until I restart, then it's back to icon view.
Other folder and external drives open in column view after a restart, it is just Macintosh HD that always reverts to icon view.
Sent a bug report to Apple, but any ideas how to fix this?

install ONYX and use it to delete all .DS_Store files on your drive. every folder has one and they store the folder view settings. you seem to have some corrupt ones. also reset your finder preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. then control-option-click on finder in the dock and choose "relaunch".
try setting default views after that.
Did both suggestions and it appears to be working as expected now. Many thanks for the quick (and very useful) reply VK!

  • Finder: "Always open in column view"

Hi all, please, what is purpose of the check box "Always open in ... view" in Finder's folder view settings? When I uncheck it, to avoid the item in the Favorites list to open with the last used type of view, it always gets checked back. Is that expected or is that a bug?

I believe column view is not an available feature in Search function; possibly because it already shows you the individual files (rather than folders with their contents opening in another column). I prefer column view myself, but have never been able to set it in the search function.

  • Can't tab into file list when using column view in the open/save dialogue boxes

    Hi,
When in Open/Save Dialog Boxes I can't use tab to select the file/folder list in Column View. Tab will only cycle through Save As, Tags, Search, and the Sidebar. In all the other views (Icon, List, Cover) I can tab into the file list. Is this a bug?
I know that enabling Full Keyboard Access will make this work, but I'd rather not do that since it increases the number of buttons you must tab through to get to the file list.
I'm using the latest version of Yosemite on a 2014 Macbook Air. Thanks.

    Hi,
Did you found the solution to this? I'm also trying to do something like you , but I got stuck up in a very primitive stage than you. I'm not getting how I can make that File Download window to appear. Can you help me please.
    Thanks.

  • How to make column view default?

This has been bugging me for a long time, but it's such a little thing that I've never bothered to investigate before.
I am about to give my old G4 Powerbook to my father who is still using OS9, so the change to OSX will be quite an adjustment for him. He has always had trouble dealing with folders and the hierarchy so when I set the machine up for him, I want things to be as consistent as possible and I think that using column view in Finder windows will help him to see where exactly his documents are stored.
Here is where the problem lies. Whenever I create a new folder and open it's window, I am presented with icon view even though I have "Open new windows in column view" selected in my finder prefs.
How the heck do I get all windows to always open in column view?? This seems so basic I'm embarrassed to even be asking the question!
    Thanks in advance
    Marion

I tried the above, and it worked in Leopard but not in Tiger. In fact in Leopard it doesn't have to be the root HD - if you open any folder, set its view the way you want and then close it, that sets up a "global" view style. All subsequently opened folders will have that same global view unless you override it, which you can do for an individual folder by checking the "Always open in XXX view" box in the View Options for that particular folder.
I don't think there is a way to set up such a "global default" view directly in Tiger. I think that the general Finder preference for "Open new windows in column view" doesn't mean "all" windows - it means just the "new" window that is generated by command-N (or Finder>File menu>New Finder Window).
I found an interesting post that describes using Automator in Tiger to go through every existing folder in the home directory, setting each folder's window to column view - see:
*10.4- Change all Finder folders to identical views - Mac OS X Hints*
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050502101913508
I don't know how well this works or how long it takes.

  • BUG: "circle" column in message list not resize-able

I've noticed a very annoying bug- the column which contains the blue dot for unread messages, and also the message count for the line if "View - Organize by Thread" is turned on, cannot be resized. This means that if a particular line is a collapsed thread, you can't see how many messages are in that thread.
I took a screen shot of what I'm talking about, if the description above isn't clear.

This was apparently fixed with the 10.5.0 to 10.5.1 OS upgrade. Thanks, Apple, for acknowledging the problem or letting me (or anybody) know it was being fixed...
