Bug in decoding of From-addresses in Mail.app

Dear all,
since quite some time there is a bug in Mail.app, which leads to problems in replying to certain mails. The bug is similar (or the same) as in thunderbird 2 (see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=254519), which was fixed in Thunderbird 3.
If a "From:" line encoded with RFC 2047 contains characters which should, per RFC (2)822, be quoted (because it contains commas (",") or similar) Mail.app does not decode it properly but treats (in the case of a comma ",") this as two different addresses. A reply to such a message usually results in a bounce or error (since the first part is usually not a valid address).
An example for such a "From:" line is:
From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?M=FCller=2C_Henry?= <[email protected]>
This is correctly encoded and thunderbird 3 and (I hate to say this) outlook treats this correct.
Maybe someone from apple reads this and there is a chance to get this fixed soon, since it is rather annoying and causes a lot of user questions to our helpdesk. Or is there another easy fix (without changing the "From:" address.
Best regards,
Damian

  • How do I fully delete an email account from my Apple Mail app on my iMac?

    Hello all,
How do I fully delete an email account from my Apple Mail app on my iMac?
When I go here: Mail > Preferences Mail > Accounts
I got the message that I needed to delete it from my Internet Accounts.
When I go here: System Preferences > Internet Accounts > select the account >
I cannot select or click the minus sign on the bottom left to delete the account because it does not appear in the list.
Yet the email account still shows up in my email logs with errors that it cannot connect.
The email account no longer appears in the left column where all my email accounts are in Apple Mail as I have deleted that domain and no longer use it, so the email was deleted at the server level. However, again, the email account still shows up in my email logs with errors that it cannot connect.
    This is driving me bananas!
Thank you for any help you can provide!
    ~ Angela

If you haven't already done so, please quit and relaunch Mail. See whether the account goes away.

keep on getting double notification  from my default mail app, and gmail app, how do i make google my primary one? so that i dont have to get doulbe notifications  on both apps

This is probably not the answer to all your questions, but I am sure it answers some.
Unlike Word and InDesign, FrameMaker's anchored frames, which hold graphics, "hang" from their insertion points, typically at the end of the paragraph. An anchored frame that follows a paragraph is set to be below the line, the line being the last line in the paragraph. If you turn on View > Text Symbols, you will see a marker that indicates the point from which the anchored frame is hanging.
If the anchored frame is taller than the available space, it is moved to the next page ALONG with that last line. If the paragraph style/tag has a widow/orphan lines number that is more than 1, then that number of lines are also moved to the next page, because the paragraph tag says to keep that many together, EVEN if there is space at the bottom of the previous page.
So, you can set the widow/orphan lines number smaller OR as you have done put a blank line before the anchored frame, which now holds the marker for the anchored frame, and set its font size to 2 pt (the lowest FrameMaker allows) and its line height to zero. This is the standard workaround UNLESS you use the line above the anchored frame as the title/caption of a figure, which is also a typical way of dealing with FrameMaker's ways.
To my knowledge, one cannot change the default of the checked cropped box. Maybe others know of some way to change this.
There is no page break in FrameMaker, hence there is no symbol for it. In the paragraph designer for the paragraph, you set to Start of the paragraph to Top of page. Top of page is FrameMaker's equivalent to a page break. To "remove" a page break, set the Start of the paragraph to Anywhere.
Since you are new to FrameMaker, I suggest reading throught the User Manual that comes with FrameMaker. You will likely find the answers to most of your questions there.
    Hope this helps,
    Van

  • How/can I change the "from" address in Mail?

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion, and have come across a problem.
I use iCloud for my mail account, but I want to change the "from" address - so the return address on my messages is NOT icloud.
I could do this in Lion.
In the mail account settings, there's an option that says "alias" and it lists (me)@mac.com, (me)@me.com and (me)@icloud.com, and then "custom" is an option.
    Great!
So I choose Custom, and then I can type in the "from" address that I want.
However, when I go to save those changes, it tells me the SMTP server can't be left blank.
    What?
It's not blank! I didn't touch it. The icloud server is still there!
Furthermore, it's greyed out, so even if it WERE blank, it's not like I can edit it!
Once this happens, the only fix is to delete the whole account from mail, and to disable mail in the icloud control panel, then re-add it.
Has anyone figured out to work around this?

Apple's outgoing mail server - just like 99.9% of all other SMTP servers, does not allow "relaying", meaning you use a domain in the 'sent from' address that is different from a domain hosted by the server. The simple reason is to make it harder for any spammer - not assuming you are one - to abuse the server. While bandwidth, server capacity and server load are some issues, the main fear for ISPs is to get blacklisted, and consequently mails from such server being refused by all others.
It's a general rule, and while exceptions might be technically possible, it would be a manual act which at a certain rate would become unmanageable.
If you want, read about the antonym, open mail relay servers, here.
You see, it's actually good behavior and absolutely in your interest to prevent you from using a "non-in-house" 'sent from' address.

  • Changing "From" address in Mail

I have a college email address that I get to keep and have been using that as my default. It is linked to a Gmail account, though, as the college does not provide a server for you after you graduate. You only get to keep the address. On gmail.com, it sends it from my college address (which is forwarded to Gmail), just the way I want. However, in Mail on my iPhone 5, it sends emails as the Gmail address, not my college address. In other words, I want to be able to send emails, from Mail, and have my recipients see it as being sent from my college address and not my Gmail address. I can do it on gmail.com, but can't in Mail. People think I have two emails and I want them to know I just have one and have it be consistent.
    Thanks for your help!

Gmail is primarily webmail and, of course, I know that that option is available when you're logged into and using Gmail.com. Your father would be able to domthe same thing, I.e., use Safari or the Google app to operate directly at Gmail instead of remotely through a client like Mail.
The only other option I can think of would be to add his business account into Mail on the iPad, following the setup instructions in the User Guide. There is moding in Mail which allows you to assign any installed email address and outgoing email server to any message — Tapping the From: address shown in the message being composed pops a menu showing other options for the From field.

  • Email 'From' address in Mail

In OSX Mail.app, you can now select 'Custom' from the pop-up menu for Aliases and enter whatever you want, even if they're not Apple addresses. But, how can one do this in iOS? All I can see in iOS Settings for an iCloud type account is the list of aliases set up in iCloud on the web (something you actually cannot do from iOS bizarrely), which can ONLY be iCloud.com addresses. Am I missing something here?
At the moment it seems to me that Mail in OSX and iOS have entirely different capabilities. I need to be able to use different addresses to send From. I can do this when on my Mac, but I cannot seem to do that from any iOS device. With all the recent furore about Mavericks and iOS 7, I would have thought they might have noticed this glaring inconsistency.
Anyone know if it is actually possible to use alternate (non Apple) From addresses in iOS Mail?

I just checked something else. My mail account is a hotmail one, so I decided to log into hotmail proper and see how it displays there. The same thing happens on the hotmail site, so perhaps it's a sender issue.
That would mean that Mail takes its 'from' field from the sender's metadata rather than data that's on my machine. Is this how it works?

    4. Window that pops up,scroll down and select "jca.ums.from" and store it in some variable say fromAddress (Make sure before adding this property u create fromAddress variable of string data type).
    5. Click OK.
    6. In the same way add property for "jca.ums.msg.content-description" from drop down and assing it to some variable.

  • How do i change the sender / from address in mail? (MS Exchange)

I have set up an MS exchange account in Mail. In OSX Snow Leopard I could change the from address. This is necessary because my account username address is not the main address I use (I work in a company's sub division). So my from is not correct generally, and it's also annoying because my own address pops up when I do a reply all.
    Any suggestions?

You can fix this problem by adding an entry into a file on your mac. You have to add an alias, but manually so by editing this file below:
I finally found a solution. You can edit this file where USERNAME = users acutal account on the mac:
    Close Mail.
    Go to:
    /Users/USERNAME/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/accounts.plist
    Under this:
                <key>EmailAddresses</key>
                <array>
                    <string>[email protected]</string>
                </array>
    Type:
                <key>EmailAliases</key>
                <array>
                    <dict>
                        <key>alias</key>
                        <string>[email protected]</string>
                        <key>name</key>
                        <string>Name 1</string>
                    </dict>
                </array>
    Save version of file.
    Open Mail.
I hope this helps - it seemed to work for me.

  • How to reply from Gmail account using Hotmail address in Mail app in iPhone iOS 6?

    Hello,
Since the iOS 6 upgrade on my 4 iPhone, the "imap.gmail.com" won't work.
I had my e-mail set up as "other" and would receive my Hotmail in Gmail using imap, so I could reply using my Hotmail address.
So I deleted everything and tried again but it still won't work.
In the mean time, I am using the Gmail App but can't use the Apple Mail app because it won't reply from my Hotmail address, and I do not want to have to choose my reply-to address; I didn't have to before.
I do not want to use my Gmail address for anything.
I want to always use my Hotmail address.
Praying for help! I want to be able to use my Mail app like before!
Also not sure if the Gmail app is killing my battery, or if the new iOS 6 is....
    Thanks so much.

I said I want to use my Hotmail ADDRESS only. Not the Hotmail e-mail.
I check my Hotmail in Gmail. I love how Gmail is set up.
    I've tried deleting and recreating.
In order to check my Hotmail in Gmail on the iPhone, and reply from my Hotmail address using Gmail, you have to set up your mail on the iPhone using "other" when adding an e-mail account.
Since the upgrade, it will no longer let me use the "imap" feature and based on my research, it seems like everyone is having this issue.
Yes, I can use the Gmail e-mail account, but when I reply it'll show my Gmail address and I'd like it to show my Hotmail address WITHOUT having to use a drop-down menu and switch the reply-to address.
    Hope that clarifies.

  • Address Book Mail.app and FaceTime contacts problem

Hi to everyone. I really want some  help hear. My mail.app on MacBook Pro 2011 don't recognises the most of my contacts email as a result not showing me my contact picture and first/last name when they send me something. Gives me the choise to create a new contact but the funny is that i already have the mail in my address book.
In the facetime happening the same thing when someone calls me via his phone number. I just see the phone number and not the contacs name. When he calls me via email i can see him as my contact. For FaceTime i figured out that when i put the area code on my contacts phone number it's fine. I just want to know if all of you have in your contact's phones there area codes or is a bug on my system and isn't neccessary.
    Thanks.

Mail.app recognizes their email address from Address Book.app and substitutes their names in place of the email address.
No, it doesn't. An email address field can contain a proper name which will be displayed if included; neither Mail nor Address Book substitute anything. If an email address does not contain a proper name, the only thing that will be displayed is the email address itself.
I would like to know how to get a more uniform look in my inbox. I've included a screenshot of Mail.app, but the domains of the emails are hidden for obvious reasons.
You can't, unless you can force everyone who might send you an email to include their name as part of the email address; good luck with that. Your link to a screenshot gives only a blank page, there is no image there.

  • Change "Return-From" field in mail.app messages

I need to be able to change the "Return-From" field in some of my outbound emails using the mail.app. I can't find a way to do this. Can anyone help? Here is what I am basically trying to accomplish:
I need recipients of the email to be able to select Reply and have the email come back to the same email address as the From field, but if they have an out of office turned on, or if the email is no longer a valid email address, I need those messages to go to a different email box so they don't clutter up the real messages that need to be worked.
Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated.

You can add any headers you want to Mail, with the defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders command in Terminal. However, it is easy to get it wrong, particularly if you already have added headers, so I would suggest you try Cricket's Applescripts for Mail, which includes one for doing it.
That said, is there a Return-From header? I cannot recall having noticed one.

  • Default sending email address in Mail.app

I have two email accounts set up in my OS 10.3.9 mail.app. I want the new one I created to be the default so when I compose a new email, that new email is the default one selected. I have manually moved the new email in the accounts window to the top per some tips I found but it keeps selecting my old email address in new emails.
How else can I make the new email the chosen one!
    Thanks
    tj

Whichever account mailbox is currently selecting in the mailboxes drawer will be the account used when selecting New to compose a new message. If no account mailbox is currently selected, the first account listed in the account's window at Mail > Preferences > Accounts is the default email account.
Tiger Mail includes a true default account selection for "Send new mail from".
