Bug in Mail.app preventing from retrieving mail

Found a bug today when using Mail.app:
What happened:
- I setup my IMAP account onto Mail
- Synchronized Mail with my IMAP account by clicking 'Get Mail'
-> I could get all my mails, but any other click on 'Get Mail' ended up with doing nothing. Even the 'Check for new mail every x minute' checked, I was never getting new mails. The only way to retrieve my mails was to quit Mail.app and run it again or Go offline in the App and then click 'Get Mail'
Did some investigations and here's what I found:
- Displayed the Activity Viewer at startup
- I saw that the app was connecting to the server, then getting mail, then doing some caching over my attachments in existing mails. While the task running on attachment was not finished I was able to click 'Get Mail' and see a task for it.
- Once the task for attachment was finished, 'Get Mail' stopped working and no new task appeared in the activity viewer each time I clicked the button
- Quit Mail.app and ran it through terminal.
- When caching the attachments, I saw an exception about an absurd size in one of the attachments and some lock issues (sorry didn't copy the exception at that time)
- Sorted my mail by attachment and looked for a mail for an attachment with a strange size.
- While I did not saw anything weird in the sizes, when I went over one of the mails, got again the exception in the terminal.
- Deleted the mail, restarted Mail.app
-> And everything started working fine
Conclusion:
- Either a bug in the Mail.app code or a faulty attachment can create a lock between threads, preventing then a normal functioning of the application... (sorry I did not kept the attachment)

It's not related to a third party app. I don't have any.  The tech was able to pinpoint the folder in the Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes
He said they have had reports of this bug and he went directly there. So they must be aware of it.

  • 10.6.7, hardware failure but the hard drive is intact.  I can access the hard drive via Linux.  Need to get mail from Mail.app and from Entourage 2004.

I need to know a couple of things, but y'all may not have all the answers I need.
First, I need to know how to retrieve the mail files from Mail.app and from Entourage 2004.  I don't know if this is a valid asusmption, but in my experience with Windows, I know that Outlook keeps everything in a single monolithic .PST file.  Is this the case with either Mail.app or with Entourage?
Second, I need to know how to access said mail files in a Linux mail app.  The mail from Mail.app is more important than that from Entourage, so it has to take priority.  Will I need some sort of converter program, or is there enough similarity between Mail.app and one of the Linux mail applications that I can simply import it?  (BTW, I'm running Ubuntu Linux 11.04 on my Linux netbook. I wish there was some way I could get Snow Leopard on here.)
Any advice on any of this problem will be extremely helpful. Thanks.

Direct install MacBuntu (based upon Ubuntu 11.04)
    http://www.oslike.se/
I have it running on one of my single core netbooks.
WIth your other problem, just borrow a Mac temporariy, drag a enclosure to a Apple Store and use one of theirs, they don't mind as they have Deep Freeze installed on all their machines so changes don't stick upon rebooting.

  • Configure Mavericks Mail app like the iOS Mail

Is there a way to configure Mavericks Mail app like the iOS Mail so that mail messages are not automatically downloaded, and they will only download when you click on the titles on the list of messages on the left?

    Hello yonole,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
The steps below will disable the automatic checking of new email for your email account:  Please note that even though the article title is for Mountain Lion, the same applies to Mavericks.
You can set Mail so that it doesn’t automatically retrieve messages from an account—for example, if you have an account you use only occasionally or you don’t want to check a personal account while you’re at work.
Choose Mail > Preferences, and then click Accounts.
Select an account, and then click Advanced.
Deselect the “Include when automatically checking for new messages” checkbox.
When you exclude an account from automatic checking, you must manually check the account for new messages. To do so, click the Get Mail icon in the Mail toolbar.
Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) accounts are automatically synced with the mail server (and so automatically check for new messages). To keep an IMAP account from being synced, take it offline.

  • Junk mail arrives in iPhone 5s mail app but not MBP mail app

This is a strange observation and I am wondering if others have experienced this...
My iPhone is a 5s running iOS v7.1.  When I access my email accounts via my iPhone each day, I am greeted with a slew of junk mail on a daily basis (typically Monday thru Friday).  Not a new thing right?  However, when I access those same email accounts from my MacBook Pro I never receive any junk mail (typically Saturday and Sunday).  In fact, junk mail never even appears in my Junk folder on the MBP.  Now, during the week when I do receive the junk mail on my iPhone, I wait until I return home and open the mail app on my MBP whereupon all of the junk mail received on my iPhone NOW shows up in Mail on my MBP THEN automatically moves into the junk folder.  So, my suspicion is that spammers have now determined how to identify mail access between devices (iPhone vs. MBP).  I am guessing they may be capitalizing the the inability of the iPhone mail app to filter junk mail.
Am I imagining this or has anyone else experienced this scenario?  Many thanks.

    Hello rayalamx
If the Mail app is not opening, then I would remove the email accounts. Open mail to see if that resolves the issue and then start adding the accounts back in.

  • Can I setup Mail app to access Yahoo mail via IMAP?

Can I setup Mail app to access Yahoo mail via IMAP? I think that my iPhone is doing this, but what about the Apple Mail app on my Mac? I don't like the fact that the Mac downloads the e-mail messages and removes them from the server, therefore making them inaccessible from Yahoo's online mail or my iPhone.
I'd like to get to work just like my Mobile Me e-mail... Any thoughts?

There is an option in the 'Advanced' section of the account setup to delete the messages from the server after a specified period rather than immediately on download; you could leave them for a week or whatever, then they will still be there when the iPhone accesses them.

Thank you Carolyn, How helpless you can feel without this App!
Going into the App Store as you suggest, I see 'thee updates available", the first says, 'X RESTART', the second says, 'Garage Band, an error has occurred" (in red), and the third 'Memory Clean, UPDATE'.
Am I correct in thinking that OSX is the problem, because it is waiting for a restart?

  • Con't. Serious error message re Mail.app w/respect to Mail Preferences not opening...

    Hi all (& Linc)
    In an earlier thread,
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/25906027#25906027
I prematurely reported a problem with Mail.app prefs not opening as being solved, when it turns out it hasn't been. The freezing of Mail.app upon invocation of Mail Prefs reintroduced itself, both with a suspected culptrit (the great DPS by Bongiovi) turned on and off and Quit Then, without any noticeable input, Mail.app suddenly righted itself and works as normal. I ran a test in Console and saw this foreboding log readout. It may still involve DPS. I'm reporting this same to the savvy engineers at Bongiovi, as well. What's to be done? I may be stumped, but I'm not giving up...
    All best,
    David

  • Mail app freezes! No mail! Mail settings, also!

Mail app freezes! No mail! Mail settings, also!

Maybe you can help me.  We have been getting incorrect  password alerts across all devices.. MacBookAir, iPhone 4 & 4s and iPad 2. We have aol , gmail and bellsouth email accts. the thing is they work and then don't work and back and forth every couple of days.. Very frustrating. Apple genius bar suggested the gmail acct over aol and said that should work but it happens on gmail also. When they aren't working the notice comes up repeatedly and when you put the pw in it still says it is wrong. And then it will work at some later point.

  • Mail app preventing mac from shutting down

Trying to shut down mac book pro. Just imported all mail into mail app. Error message stating mail canceled shut down and to quit mail and try again. Did that, same error message

Was your import completed? Do you have any other ongoing Mail activity? Check what the Mail process is doing:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
I would suggest as a start to move the com.apple.mail cache folder to the Trash, but do not Empty it. You will find it in one of the Cache folders in the /Library/ or /Home/Library/ folder unless you are running Mavericks.

  • Mail.app reply from .Mac alias

I remember in Tiger this was difficult to get working as the .Mac smtp server forever complained about authentication. When I clean installed Leopard using my .Mac id to retrieve my details I was amazed to find all aliases on the account suddenly available in the From dropdown of Mail.app. I'm not sure when but at some point these became unavailable again, vanished. What do people do with .Mac aliases to be able to use them in Mail? Adding an alias to the Email Address in Prefs/Accounts in the format [email protected], [email protected] just makes smtp.mac.com complain.

  • Why has my Mail app disappeared from my MacBook Pro?

If i try to open the Mail app from my applications folder I get the following error message, "You can't use this version of Mail with this version of OS X"
As far as i remember the mail app disappeared since I accepted a security update.
Grateful for any help in retrieving my mail and mailboxes......

    !! WARNING !!
    about the September 2012
    "Security Update 2012-004"
If you've got "Mail.app" in a folder OTHER THAN the root "Applications" folder,
MOVE "MAIL.APP" TO THE APPLICATIONS FOLDER
    **BEFORE** INSTALLING THE "004" UPDATE!!
Because *IF* you use OSX's integrated Software Update app from the Apple menu to do the "004" updating, and *IF* your Mail.app is NOT in the Applications folder, then buddy, you've got some sitdown fixit time ahead of ya and/or some internet tie-up time downloading the "004" update file itself.
Been through it all, already.  In fact, just got done getting my Mail back up & running. And I tried everything short of attempting to unpacking my "Mail.pkg" receipt file using... whatever... even Pacifist couldn't get it out. So that fixit "Plan D" died quick. And I'm not savvy enough to use Terminal commands to do "Plan E," so that SUDO stuff was my brick wall.
So I compressed my entire "Mail" subdirectory that contain all my emails, for safekeeping during the required surgery, or whatever would work, leaving the original Mail directory where it was. In case something bad happened in all my fixit whatevers, the one thing I *didn't* want to cross paths with was a hosed Library -> Mail folder. Then I'd be pssd. But I can wipe out that ZIP now 'cause all's well now. After 6 hrs of downloading thru a mobile broadband hotspot running at only 14KB/sec speed due to my having gone over my T-Mobile hotspot plan's bandwidth amount (throttled-down after reaching the limit, tho not cut off completely. Kinda nice, but it's a huge speed drop).
I tried moving the two Mail.app versions around, compressing them & then trashing the original so they wouldn't be recognized, blabla, even booted my Mac in Safe Mode & reinstalled the "MacOSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) Update Combo.dmg" update file, which in the past has fixed many problems. But after restarting, not this one.
Like a dummy who ignored knowing better, I had my Mail.app in a folder other than the Applications folder, with only an alias to that being in the Applications folder. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. The updater don't see that as nuthin special or useful.
So if you've got, like I've got, "old" icons for Mail.app (v4.5) in your Finder toolbar & in your Dock that all point to "Mail.app v4.5" in whatever folder you've got that in, other than in the Applications folder (where Apple apparently REQUIRES that it be located, and ONLY there, at least for OSX updating purposes), then after you download & autorun that "004" updater using Software Update, NONE of your pre-existing Mail icons will work. And MOST aggravatingly, **NOR** will your brand-new "Mail.app v4.6" work that came out of the "004" updating installation.  So basically, your Mail.app's... all of 'em.... are hosed. But only if you run the "004" update without your "Mail.app v4.5" being located in your Applications folder and ONLY in your Applications folder. And duplicates of Mail.app, scattered around your HDD??  Always a problem with many Apple apps.... The Apple software engineers apparently like 'em to be in the Applications folder, and in ONLY there, and ONLY the latest version, and ONLY 1 single copy of each on your entire HDD. They just don't seem to stress that enough, it appears. Kind of an oversight for them to not emphasize that, IMO...
My recommendation for this particular September 2012 "004" update:
If you run Software Update, and if you see the "Security Update 2012-004" listed as available for download, UNCHECKMARK IT.  DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT USING SOFTWARE UPDATE !  Instead, download the actual update file itself.
Same thing, only a different way of doing it. Most importantly, you'll be skipping the auto-installation that Software Update performs.
AND you'll have that update file on your HDD for future fixits, should a nasty "unfixable" problem come up.
First, #1. Do a filename search for "Mail" (Option-Command-Spacebar). Scroll down to where the "Apps" are located in the list under the "Kind" column heading. First, find your Mail.app that's v4.5. Get that bugger into your Applications folder if it's not already there. Next, Trash all other "Mail.app" apps you see in that same list that you may have elsewhere on your HDD.
    #2. Go here: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586
And download the actual "004" DMG update file: "SecUpd2012-004.dmg"
And of course, it's a biggie.... 270MB... so watching grass grow may be involved here if you've got a slow connection (go to a MacDonalds & do it, like I shoulda done).
    3. After downloading, I'd recommend closing down all apps, emptying the Trash, and restarting.
Then, after restarting, run Disk Utility's "Repair Disk Permissions."
Then, doublecheck that the Mail.app version 4.5 is in your Applications folder.
THEN fire up & install "SecUpd2012-004.dmg."
    Reboot.
After the reboot, your Mail.app version 4.5 in the Applications folder will have become Mail.app version 4.6 in the Applications folder, and all will be well again.
And you can dump that zipped-up "Username -> Library -> Mail" folder then, too.
    Happy Mac'in!

  • Mail crashes when it retrieves mail from POP server

I'm using Mail version 2.1.1 on OS X 10.4.10. I have two e-mail accounts each on a POP server. I've been using Thunderbird, but Mail does a few things that Thunderbird doesn't. The only problem is that if there are a lot of messages to download, Mail just crashes. As an example, I have a good 600 messages in one of my mailboxes (because I don't like to delete messages from the server if I have room to keep them there). I just added the account to Mail and it wants to download every single message on the server, so it gets about 5 to 50 messages downloaded and then crashes. I don't really need it to download all those messages, so is there a way to tell Mail to only download messages that I get after the date that I add the account? or will I just have to use IMAP?

Does Mail really crash (i.e. quit unexpectedly) or does it freeze (i.e. become unresponsive)?
You cannot prevent Mail from trying to download all the messages from the POP server, but Mail shouldn’t crash when downloading them either...
Try the following to check whether the junk filter could have a bearing on it and post back with your observations:
    1. Either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down your Internet connection and open Mail afterwards.
    2. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail and disable junk mail filtering.
    3. Go online again. Does Mail crash now?
Another thing that may cause Mail 2.x to crash while retrieving mail is using Address Book smart groups in rules and/or in smart mailboxes. The only workaround I know for that is getting rid of any rules and smart mailboxes that make use of AB smart groups.

    hello-
i don't have mail.app on my ibook for some reason. i tried copying the app and all the files over a network i created, but it doesn't work. the app is there and i can click on it to open it, but then it acts like it's opening and then doesn't open. is there any way i get can it on my ibook and make it work? thanks.
but then this created another problem. somehow in copying my files over the network, all the messages in my inbox (my powerbook has mail.app and i've been using it for years) were deleted! i use "rules" and have certain messages sent to certain mailboxes that i created, and those are all fine. but my whole inbox was emptied. does anyone know how i can retrieve them or what i can do in the future to keep this from happening? thanks
the powerbook is running Mac OS X 10.4.5, and the ibook is running 10.3.something.
