Bug in Software Update?

Running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 (12F45), and App Store Version 1.2.2 (129.16).  The "App Store" app shows an available update in the Dock Icon (i.e. a 1 inside a red circle), but there is actually no applicable update to be downloaded.  Running "software update" does not clear this indicator.
While this is hardly the most earth-shattering bug in the universe, perhaps the Apple folks will read this report and fix the problem.

No joy.  Also deleted the plist file and rebooted.  Same result.
When I run App Store (and when I "reload page") all it shows is the free upgrade to Mavericks, yet the dock icon shows one applicable update.
Can this be that Apple is now counting Mavericks in the applicable updates?  Up until yesterday, this certainly was not the case.
And, my wife's iMac, with one year newer hardware but nominally the same OS, does not display this anomaly.

  • BUG: Apple Software Update installs 32-bit iTunes 8 on 64-bit Systems

Hi, all! Jon here. Just wanted to point out that when Apple Software Update updated my iTunes from 7 to 8, it installed the 32-bit version on my 64-bit OS, and so when it finished and I opened up iTunes, I got a message that it wasn't compatible with my operating system, and therefore I had to go to Apple's website and download iTunes again myself. I think ASU should check to see which operating system the user is using and download the correct program accordingly.

  • How do I report a bug: HP Printer Software Update 2.7 not compatible with HP C5200 series (C5280)

    Hi
I've recently updated my 2011 vintage 22" 3GHz iMac recently bought from Apple themselves to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and my HP printer/scanner (C5280) has just stopped working - printing half a page and then complaining:
"Communication Error: Unable to send print data ..." blah blah.
It was working fine under 10.6.7 ...
What seems like several months later, I have
    1) checked the cable
    2) checked  the printer (it works on a Windows machine)
    3) Downloaded the "latest" drivers from the HP website (dated 2009)
    4) Scrubbed the HP software (using HP uninstaller option with Cmd-Cntrl-Opt pressed)
    5) Downloaded the "Software Update" version of HP Printer software update 2.7 .....
    6) Installed the HP software again (just in case it needed to be in that order)
    7) Scrubbed it again
    8) RE-downloaded HP Printer Software Update 2.7 via Software Update
and tried printing again ..... still no joy.
My view is that this is a bug.
Is it possible to report such a phenomenon to anyone in Apple / HP who would actually take notice (or, whisper it) care?
Any further suggestions - or perhaps ideas for places to take a restful vacation - gratefully received.
    Thanks
    DJB

Is your wretched printer the same model? How about the Mac - and your OS.
I have tried to persuade HP that this should be investigated here:

Please do contribute to that discussion too, since I assume that HP will be the organisation to investigate/correct any driver problems.

  • When trying to edit a photo, it disappears (black screen) or screen is full of lines. Is this a bug with the latest software update?

After updating with the latest software, when trying to edit a photo, it disappears (black screen) or screen is full of lines. If I blindly crop or edit the photo, when I exit edit mode, those changes have been made, but obviously this is unacceptable. Is this a bug with the latest software update?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/ Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help: As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • About bash bug update being available but not showing up in software updates???

Apple has posted a Bash Bug update (as of 9/29/14) for various versions of OS X.  It can be downloaded on the downloads page.  But why doesn't it show up as an Apple update on the Software Updates page???
When I go there it says "there are no updates available".  What's up with that???
    thanks.. bob

Have you tried going to the App Store and finding the update there?  Or getting the updater from the Apple Downloads site: OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 Update

  • Mac: Firefox software update process will not authorize in parental controlled account-Bug?

    OS: 10.7.5
    Firefox 20
Parental Controlled user account: Firefox and Firefox Plugin processes are checked in parental controls. No other Firefox processes are visible.
When logged into parental controlled account, user launches Firefox from the Dock. Message appears:
You do not have permission to run Firefox Software Update. Admin required authorization.
Admin clicked Always Allow, entered admin name & password. Firefox would not launch.
Logged out of Parental Controlled account.
    Logged in to Admin account.
Launched Firefox. "About Firefox" shows Firefox up to date.
    Logged out.
Logged back into parental controlled account.
    Firefox opens.
Is this a bug or is there some other reason the admin authorization failed?

I have a student that is having the same issue. Whenever she attempts to open Firefox, either from the dock or applications folder, she gets the permission error. I tried this under an admin account and get the same error, and it will not go past it, even with the admin user/pass. A strange icon appears in the dock for a second and the disappears, but Firefox never opens.
We have around 1600 student laptops in the school and I am seeing this on one of them. I have confirmed that she is running the latest version of Firefox and have tried to clear out the preferences, but there don't appear to be any.
Does anyone have anything useful to add to the conversation? Tyler just doesn't seem to be grasping the issue.

  • So I just bought an iPhone 5s and Touch ID was working fine until the software update is that a bug ? Because I don't think my home button broke

So I just bought an iPhone 5s and Touch ID was working fine until the software update is that a bug ? Because I don't think my home button broke

Have not heard of that but here is what I would do - test after each step to see if the problem is solved
    1. Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    2. If that does not work - back up to iTunes and restore to factory settings
    3. Check to see if the problem is resolved before restoring from backup

  • Bug after the latest software update...

I downloaded the new update (1.3 if I'm right) 2 days ago, well it fixed a few things, but tbh since I installed it I cannot view my pictures in full screen, cause when I select one only a black screen comes in and nothing else! It doesn't freeze down it just doesn't show anything. Is this the problem of the software update or maybe I did something wrong? Has anybody else experienced this too? Help me out please!

I'm in the same situation and haven't been able to find any info either. I hadn't connected the fact that I did an update with it to be honest. I can see the thumbnails and if I use the jog wheel as if scrolling and then go back to the menu it looks like its been flicking though the pics but the screen remains black.

  • Unable to Sync Video files after Itunes 9.0.3 and iPhone software update

This is my problem with Itunes- After I the Software Update program installed iTunes 9.0.3 yesterday, and I upgraded the iPhone software (to 3.1.3.) shortly thereafter. The iPhone upgrade failed (it froze). When I restarted the computer, I had to restore the iPhone and then I synced. I could not sync my video files.
The apps, music and "push" items sync perfectly. However, it ignores the Movies, Podcasts and iTunes U files.
In terms of the location for these files, all of my Library and Media files are contained in a firewire external drive. They have been there since I started up with iTunes many years ago. All worked well before the Install/Upgrade.
Problem is- iTunes ignores the pointer in Preferences/Advanced/Location and creates an empty folder, named iTunes in the Music library (in my Home directory) at every sync (even if I delete it, it recreates it on the new sync).
Question-Why does iTunes ignore the pointer, and create a new empty folder in Home?
    Thanks for your help.

Apparently Apple doesn't bother to test their software updates. This problem was introduced last September and has persisted through a number of updates that were supposed to address the bug. Very discouraging. I keeping holding out hope that an iTunes update will eventually fix this feature that worked fine for years before iTunes 9 was introduced.
Unfortunately, it is impractical to go back to an earlier version of iTunes.
I have reported this bugs several times (via iTunes feedback). If Apple actually reads the feedback, they never respond.
It's not like there are other vendors or unknowns involved: current iMac 24, new iPod Touch, the latest version of iTunes and iPod OS.
So what do we have to do to get Apple's attention? Stop buying music? Stop buying Apple devices? I'd love to buy the new iPad, but I'm darned if I will if they are unable or unwilling to fix this bug...

  • HT202879 I am stumped - trying to open a recent Pages file but error message says that I need a "newer version" of Pages.  My software updates show that there are no updates available.  I recently updated Pages but it is not consistent.

I am stumped - I am trying to open a recent Pages file (created with a newer software that I thought was correctly installed recently) but error message says that I need a "newer version" of Pages.  My software updates show that there are no updates available. Pages 09 version 4.3 shows as my current version.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • Iphone 3G Software Update Fixes security vulnerability associated with viewing malicious PDF files?

Is there an Iphone 3G Software Update Fixes security vulnerability associated with viewing malicious PDF files?  Latest version I can download is 4.2.1

No fix is needed since that vulnarability isn't in 4.2.1.

  • Here we go again - software update available (not)

I have struggled with this for over a year now.  App Store on my MacBook Pro shows an upate available - but there isn't actulaly.  It all starts with a flag on the icon in the dock - but when I click on it, then the software updates tab - it will spin and spin, then show nothing (but still say there is one update availabe.  Once this behavior begins, it is only a matter of time (usually days) until it will show that there is an update available, and again clicking on it, then the update tab, brings me to the page, but will show a piece of software (for me - it is ALWAYS Twitter app) - and shows that it is installed already (see window capture).
Over the last year, I have done more things than I can remember to make it quit this - from deleting Twitter, then installing it again through the App Store.  That doesn't remove it.
I have deleted the App Store prefs...  no effect.
I read on another similar thread of resetting the App Store - and followed those directions, which ended the bad behavior for a few weeks, only to return.
In my most recent reappearance of the issue - it showed 1 Update for just over a week - but no actual software listed... until yesterday when there was an update that involved Java.  I had it update that... and then Twitter showed up (though it doesn't actually need updating).
Apple is losing its "user-friendly" reputation for many reasons - and bugs like this reflect just one of them.

  • I would like to connect a printer that requires OS 10.6 or newer. My MacBook is currently using OS 10.5.8. In searching for a software update, I am told no updates are needed. How can I upgrade my OS to 10.6 or better?

I would like to connect a printer that requires OS 10.6 or newer. My MacBook is currently using OS 10.5.8. In searching for a software update, I am told no updates are needed (and am given no option for updating my OS). How can I upgrade my OS to 10.6 or newer?

You have to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change to add to the base code or as a bug fix within an existing Operating System. Such as the .8 added to OSX 10.5 or the .11 added to OSX 10.4..
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
10.5 Leopard was written for Power PC Macs with code added to force it to run on Intel processors.
10.6 Snow Leopard has completely rewritten code and only runs on Intel Macs.
10.7 Lion ($19.99) used some 32 bit which allows it to run on Late 2006 through Early 2008 MacBooks and a lot of 64 bit code.
10.8 Mountain Lion ($19.99) is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It can only run on the Late 2008 through Mid 2010 MacBooks. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.
10.9 Mavericks is pure 64 bit and is a free download from the App store.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard After you’ve installed that then download the 10.6.8 combo updater to finish it off. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks which are downloads only.
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.

  • Software update no longer works after 10.4.9 update

After I applied the 10.4.9 update, using the combo updater and fixing permissions both before and after, Software Update can no longer connect to the Internet. I also ran Onyx, but it didn't make a difference.
Any ideas? Could a network-end firewall make a difference?

I just came across an article on the Unsanity weblog, www.insanity.org/archives/macos_x/shock_andawe.php, entitled: "The Dangers of Updating: Don't Do Anything While Optimizing." It says there is a bug in 10.4.9, of which Apple is aware, that messes up "prebinding" if any other activity is done while the optimizating is going on. Using Mac Helpmate 1.1, I optimized "update prebinding." It characterized that process as "Reassociating applications with their dynamic libraries." It returned a log as long as King Kong's arm saying many times, "environment variable disabled use of prebinding in (file name)." An inability to Download Updates is not a result mentioned in the Unsanity weblog, but it may be a result nevertheless. I have frequently used other applications while downloading updates. If this is the cause of the problem, I still don't know what to do about it. John Nelms, [email protected]
