Bug in the Refresh Music Library - N97 V21

I wanted to add just one new song onto my N97, it was a song that I heard on the radio and liked so I purchased it on iTunes added it to a playlist and transferred it to my N97 using NMT. This all went fine until I tried refreshing the music library, no matter what I did the refresh would not find the additional song. I checked the transfer using YBrowser and sure enough the song had been transferred and the playlist had the new song added (I could even play it in the file browser) but this would not update in the music player.
To resolve this I had to delete all 4.7GB of music off my N97 (including the playlists) using NMT then disconnect the phone and refresh the library, the music library then displayed 0 songs. Then using NMT I had to reload all of the music and refresh the library, this time it worked.
As you can imagine deleting and reloading 4.7GB (thankfully I don't have more music on my phone) of data takes quite a bit of time, all to add just one new 8MB song. Outrageous!
Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Can I add the iTunes Music Library (old) to iTunes Music Library?

Hi, I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend and I don't want to give her incorrect advice ... She has an Intel G5 iMac running 10.5.8 and iTunes 9.0 (she has downloaded but not installed the iTUnes 9.1 update).
Her problem is that she has deleted certain songs from her 'Jane Doe's iPod Playlist' so that she didn't have those songs on her iPod - I don't know the method she used to do this, nor does she. However, it has resulted in those songs now not showing up in the iTunes music library on her computer. There's just an exclamation mark and a dialog box asking if she would like to locate the songs.
She asked me to help her out and I discovered that all these songs (there are dozens- more than a hundred - of them) are still on her computer in a folder called 'iTunes Music old' - this is a sub-folder of the iTUnes Music folder where the path is Music - iTunes - iTunes Music.
    My question is this -
Is it possible to select all the albums in this 'iTUnes Music old' folder and simply drag and drop it onto the iTunes Music folder (after making sure that the location I'm dragging and dropping to corresponds to the location for her library as specified on the advanced tab of preferences) so that the songs will be back in the default library?
It seems to me that it should work but I don't want to be responsible for the person who loses all her music for her if it doesn't.
I would really appreciate someone who knows their way around iTUnes telling me the best way to sort her music and whether or not she should install the 9.1 update before or after reorganising the library.
    Cheers
    Tricia

If you're seeing the , that's generally an indication that media files (the mp3 or m4a, etc., files) were moved using Finder. They were moved or removed and the iTunes library wasn't able to keep track of where they went. If this is an old machine that she's messed around with, it can be a bit of a crap shoot trying to figure out where the stuff should go (iTunes is quite unhelpful in telling you where the music for the broken links was expected to be ... you can take some guesses, but iTunes 9 and iTunes 8 use different folder structures, so getting the stuff in the right place can be a nuisance).

Surprisingly complicated question. If you were confident of where the music files should go, you could try moving them (safer, copy them) to your current iTunes media folder and if you drop them in the exact same spot they were before, your broken links problem will be solved. It's a long shot, though.
There are apps out there for rebuilding libraries, but if you don't have extensive playlists that would take forever to rebuild (or you don't have lots of ratings or things like that which you are trying to preserve), I'd personally be inclined to rebuild her library from scratch by:
Create a new library by pressing and holding down the option button while you start iTunes, keep holding the button down until it prompts you to create a new library.
Go into the "Advanced" section of the "Preferences" screen and tell iTunes to (a) keep your folder organized and (b) to copy music to the new media folder.
Use the "Add Folder to Library" command on the "File" menu to add the music to your iTunes Library. This will copy the music to the new folder you specified in the previous step. Repeat this for her old iTunes folders (sounds like she might have it in different areas). Nice thing is, you can select some common parent folder (e.g. your parent "music" folder) and you'll only have to do this once.
Once iTunes is done copying music to the new media folder and has rebuilt the new library, you can clean up the old music media files that it sounds like are scattered about on her machine.
Again, I personally lean towards just rebuilding the iTunes library, allowing iTunes to organize the files like it wants, and then rebuild your playlists. But, if you'd rather try to repair her old library in situ, then you'll want to check out some of the apps designed for repairing broken links in libraries. Let us know if you want to do that and we can point you to some apps that might be able to help.
It seems to me that it should work but I don't want to be responsible for the person who loses all her music for her if it doesn't.
It's kind of hard to lose the music unless you do something nuts like drag stuff to the trash without making sure you've got a copy/backup somewhere. In fact, go ahead and have her back up her machine before you start. And when you're all done, and you've confirmed that everything is great, do another backup.
I would really appreciate someone who knows their way around iTUnes telling me the best way to sort her music and whether or not she should install the 9.1 update before or after reorganising the library.
Unless her version of iTunes is archaic (v7 or earlier), I'd suggest fixing her library first, and then doing the upgrade. Let's not add variables to the situation. Also, I don't know what the iTunes upgrade process would do with the broken links in her existing library.
Frankly, there are enough bugs/problems with 9.1, you might want to wait until 9.1.1 comes out anyway. I personally regret doing the 9.1 upgrade. It works, but I'm working around various bugs. And some people are having very serious problems. If you absolutely need 9.1 (e.g., iPad), you can do it and you'll probably be fine. But unless you need 9.1 for some reason, I'd wait for 9.1.1 release.

    Hi Synv
I've had the same problem with my N85 after upgrading it to the latest firmware v30.019, the Refresh Library function is missing. Went hunting on the web and found the following, worked for me. Have yet to add music to see how it refreshes but it did clear down the original music list. Will try adding music via the Nokia Music Application to see if that will do a proper refresh... in the meantim, hope this helps anyone who needs to manually sort their music player listings.

  • My ipad imessages are coming up on my husband's iphone. Is that because we share an apple id account. How can we have separate apple id's and still share the same music library.

my ipad imessages are coming up on my husband's iphone. Is that because we share an apple id account. How can we have separate apple id's and still share the same music library.

The biggest problem I have is with cross texting. My friends send my a imessage on ipad to ipad and it comes up as message on my husband's phone as well as my ipad?
My friends definitely do not want my husband seeing their texts. (and I dont really need him to see my responses either)
Also, apple id is based on my email account, how do I create a new apple id without setting up a new email account?

  • Can I manually edit the iTunes Music Library.xml file

    Here's why.
Noticed on my Apple TV that there were a number of podcasts that when selected would say "Apple TV cannot play the current song".
Looked in iTunes and these podcasts are no where to be found. Did some searches in Spotlight and also, turned up zeros. Not found.
I then looked directly into my iTunes Music Library.xml file and sure enough there are the records.
What is odd is that the location of all the bad songs have a similar invalid path.
    Bad path.
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/iTunes/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Podcasts/KQED/podcast.mp3</string>
    Correct Path
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/iTunes/Music/Podcasts/KQED'/podcast.mp3</string>
Now, all of these have dates that lead me to believe this was due to an iTunes upgrade back in September of 2005. It doesn't look like they are causing problems with iTunes itself. However, it is quite annoying for my Apple TV.
Question. Is there a different way to fix this than just manually removing the entries from the xml file?
I haven't tried to edit the iTunes Music Library.xml file just yet as I want to make I don't totally screw things up first.

I did some additional testing here and I deleted the track information from the iTunes Music Library.xml
On start up of iTunes, it does not add the deleted file back in. On the Apple TV, it still shows the bad file.
What I think that means is that even the Apple TV gets its playlist information from another source.
I have also started on another track which is to remove all of my podcasts from iTunes. Which I have now done.
The only ones left are these bad tracks that only show up in the iTunes Music Library.xml file and more importantly on my Apple TV.
I'd put this on the podcast or the Apple TV thread, but still believe this is an iTunes issue.

Hello and welcome to the support community
As you know, your iPhone 5 is not compatible with our iBook G4. To get your music in iTunes from your iBook to your iPhone you would need to migrate the music files to a newer intel based Mac. A Mac which has Mac OS X 10.6 or higher installed. Then sync your iPhone 5.

Ok, so without making any modifications (hardware or software) whatsoever- I come in from work, plop down to my computer, click on iTunes, and the music library has disappeared- I get the following error message:

I'm having the exact same message, except in my case, nothing changed. I leave all 3,000 songs on my hard drive and suddenly nothing will copy. I still have the same songs as before, but nothing can be added from the store or from my cds. Have you worked out the problem? Can you share your strategy?

  • I am trying to sync a playlist to my Nano,  but when I click on the Music tab at the top, it will not allow me to select the option Selected Playlist, Artists, etc.  I cannot un-check the Entire Music library option and check the Selected Artist - on

I am trying to sync a playlist to my Nano,  but when I click on the Music tab at the top,
it will not allow me to select the option Selected Playlist, Artists, etc.  I cannot un-check the Entire Music library
option and check the Selected Artist … one.
I have changed the Sync option to Manually sync, but that does not help.
How can I change this to the second option?
    Thanks.

There is a checkbox above those two options for how to sync.  It says Sync Music; it enables automatic syncing.  That box needs to be checked before you can select from the two options for how automatic syncing is performed.
NOTE:  If the iPod is current set up to Manually manage music [and videos], checking that Sync Music box replaces its current content with content from your iTunes library, based on how automatic syncing is set up on that screen.
So, if your goal is to add ONE playlist to an iPod that is managed manually, you do not want to do this because iTunes will erase the iPod's current content and replace it with just that ONE selected playlist (and whatever else you select on that Music settings screen).
Instead, if the iPod currently uses the manual setting, you need to add playlists manually to the iPod (not use the automatic syncing setting).  Please post back with more details about your situation.

  • Selecting any Playlist Folder lists the entire music library

I recently switched to a new computer from an old one (both were XP Professional, iTunes version was not completely up-to-date on the older computer) and after migrating the old iTunes library and reconfiguring automatic playlists dependent on others, I found myself with a problem. Some of my playlists didn't show correct information, and after poking around for some time, I noticed every playlist folder, once selected or added as a dependency on an automatic playlist, listed the entire music library. Most of my affected playlists now depend on a workaround, and automatic playlist that corresponds to whatever the folders are supposed to list. This, however, is extremely inconvenient as I have one folder containing easily over a hundred playlists, the number of which increases nearly daily. As it happens, I have several playlists dependent of this folder. There is no workaround I can think of short of creating an automatic playlist with over a hundred separate rules, updated as the playlists grow.
    Help would be appreciated.

I'm not quite sure how a screenshot would illuminate the issue. I can, however, try to explain this in simpler terms.
I have my playlists in their folders (the sort created by selecting File -> New Playlist Folder). I imported (through File -> Library -> Import Playlist) my music library from an other computer. The playlist folders imported showed every item in my library (automatic playlists didn't). Apparently, moving any playlist out of a folder fixes this problem.

  • "The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved" - Error 1450

I get this error when I try to update my library:
"The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-1450)."
I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTune for about 7 times but it keeps coming back.
    What can I do?

I wish I could say either the Reg changes or disabling McAfee anti-virus worked for me, but I am still stuck.
I am running 6 on a Win2K Server. My account is admin and I have confirmed it is not a permissions issue or a lock file issue.
I receive the -1450 error in the following conditions:
    1. iTunes attempts to save library
    2. iTunes attempts to download a purchase (actually, it appears to occur after the file is downloaded, but it does not save the file to disk, although it thinks it downloaded the file)
    3. iTunes attempts to rip a CD. This is a random occurrence whereby the rip stops at some random place mid-song. I may have it happen immediately, then work for a few songs, then happen again. I have been able to rip 2-3 CDs before seeing the error, whereas other times it seems to occur with the first song and I retry a few dozen times before it works again. I have used 2 different CD drives.
    4. iTunes attempts to sync with the iPod. In this case, I randomly receive the error that I need to reset my iPod to factory defaults. However, after a day of waiting, it works again. I actually tried to reset the iPod to factory defaults when I was first presented with this problem--it caused a write error and crashed the iPod to the point where it could not even be recovered by the Apple staff at the Apple store; they gave me a new replacement unit.
I have to think this is a programming issue on the iTunes side, specific to Win2K (and possibly NT). Has anyone had this problem on an XP box?
My next step is to move all my files and software over to my XP box and see if I receive the same errors. Should that fail, I'll use a non-iTunes product until a software update is released.
Anyone from Apple checking into the -1450 error issues?
