BUG: iPhoto 7.1.5 Hangs w/OS 10.6

Prior to upgrading from OS 10.5 to OS 10.6, I could import videos from my camera (Kodak EasyShare C713) into iPhoto 7.1.5. Now, iPhoto hangs when it attempts the import of videos (photos are no problem). I must eventually force quit. Is this a common problem? Can anyone advise how I can report this bug to Apple?

Mine is doing the exact same thing please HELP anyone???

  • IPhoto 6.0.4 hangs/crashes

I cannot construct a web page, edit a photo, double-click on a thumbnail, layout a calendar, or make an iPhoto book without it hanging mid-process. Oddly enough, if I change to full screen mode, I can view any photo and even edit it.
I have reinstalled the program from the iLife disk then upgraded, rebuilt the library, imported the orginals again, deleted the plist, and run Batchmod--not necessarily in that order.
Is anybody else struggling with 6.0.4?

    Philip & sadcaper :
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. To rule out any messed up permissions download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
Also run OnyX to clean out the user caches and run the cron maintenance scripts.
    Do you Twango?

  • IPhoto (9.4.2) hangs on exit

iPhoto (9.4.2) hangs after closing on Late 2009 iMac running Mountain Lion (10.8.2). There is plenty of disk space and I have lots of memory. I have repaired the database several times but it doesn't work. The database is large (350+ GB). Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

    I have a late 2009 iMac, Intel Core i5 2.66 GHz, 1TB HDD, 12GB memory (original was 4 GB I added 8 GB).
I tried after performing every option.
Sometimes after I do a repair/rebuild it will work but not for long. I have been noticing a significant amount of disk activity while it is open. I can imagine that it might be working legitimately in the background. If it does end properly when I close, it takes a while to do so (+/- 2 minutes). Eventually it doesn't close at all and at over an hour I force it to close.
I think I have an overall software problem with my computer. AHT and the Disk Utility does not return any problems. Now I am considering doing a clean install of the original OSX that came with my computer (Snow Leopard) and I hope that I can retrieve all the stuff I need from my Time Machine backups And in case you are wondering, I have tried just re-installing the OSX too but that doesn't seem to fix it either.
This may have all started from a faulty hard drive that was recently recalled (and since then replaced) by Apple.

  • IPhoto videos seem to hang iMovie for 10-15 minutes

When I first launch iMovie and click into the iPhoto Videos in the Events Library the app hangs for around ten minutes. After that it seems to work normally. Non-iPhoto videos do not cause this problem. Any ideas?

Moretown got a few questions, which may help others identify your issue.

  • BUG: iPhoto 9 Slideshow - Text Slide Bugs and iPhoto Library Corruption

I was wondering if anyone else has run into the following issues:
I have had multiple issues with iPhoto crashing, stop responding, and database corruption where I cannot open iPhoto. These issues all began when I tried to use the new themed slideshow in iPhoto v9.1. Previously, I had only used iPhoto to create basic slideshows with iPhoto v7.x. I was hoping that I would be able to create my masterpiece in iPhoto 11 (v9.1) but I have only been frustrated by my attempts so far.
What should have been a 3 - 4 hour operation has become a 20 hour nightmare and I still don't have a slideshow to show for my efforts. This has been one of my most disappointing uses of Apple software ever.
Repeatable, reproducible bugs that I have run into include:
    1. Deleting a photo that appears in the timeline before a sub-title causes havoc with subsequent sub-titles (a.k.a. Text Slides). Subsequent subtitles are randomly copied to pictures following the one it was assigned to. Further, there is no subtitle icon in the timeline and the photos have to be manually modified to eliminate the subtitle. Work around is click the "Text Slide" button
    2. Zooming and/or image placement is not preserved and not visible when previewed, exported, or iPhoto is closed and then reopened.
    3. The iPhoto Library becomes corrupt and permissions problems prevent me from working with my photos. This happens while working on slideshow. I have had to rebuild my library and repair permissions no less than five times since I started working on my slideshow.

iPhoto's slideshow feature is fine but no tool for a "masterpiece".
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie, on every Mac sold, as is iDVD.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoPresenter $29
    PhotoToMovie $49.95
    PulpMotion $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Express $199
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs.
However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Express is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

    TD

  • IPhoto 2.0.1 hangs shortly after launch

I have been using iPhoto 2.0.1 for some time on MacOS X 10.2.8 with no
problems. Recently, the program launches and the main window appears but
within a few seconds of launch, the program freezes with the spinning
beachball. It takes two passes at "force quit" to kill it (iPhoto will
be shown in red in the app list).
I have tried the following to resolve, all to no avail:
    iPhoto with no iPhoto Library
    removing personal library/preferences/comp.apple.iphoto.plist
iPhoto from another user account including root
    repairing directory permissions
    removing /library/receipts/iphoto.pkg
    /library/receipts/iphotoupdate201.pkg
    /applications/iphoto
then doing install of iPhoto 2.0.0 and iPhoto 2.0.1 updater
None of these solved the problem. There have been no changes to this
system (no new software, updates, etc.). All other apps are behaving
    normally.
System has ~ 1G of RAM and ~ 2G of free space.
    Any ideas ?
    TIA.

    OT,
Thanks for the reply. However, the problem I was exhibiting seems to have cured itself on the startup the next day. Perhaps one of the maintenance tasks run at startup cleared up whatever it was that was causing iPhoto to hang.
I do not keep my system running all night when many of these functions (daily/weekly/monthly) are scheduled to run. From examining the cron log time stamps, it would appear that cron only executes crontab scheduled operations if the computer is actually running at the scheduled time(s). My recollection from System V Unix days was that cron had a "catchup" capability and would recognize that had not run a scehduled task and would execute it at the next boot time or whenever cron was restarted. Apparently the BSD cron doesn't function that way.
I D/L'd OnyX 1.3.1 (the last version for 10.2.8) and will do what you suggest. Seems like a good thing to do periodically anyway.
    Regards,

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    If so:
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Iphoto 6.0.6 hangs

Any time I try to order prints, books or cal.. iphoto 6 hangs. I tried clearing the net services from the key chain and made sure all s/w is the current version. I'm running 10.4.11 and iphoto 6.0.6. Any ideas would be great! Thanks.

i am having apparently the same problem too. i am running OSX_10.4.11 and iPhoto 6.0.6(322) and i can log in to my "one click" account and apparently "purchase" the item (the sale shows up on my bank account online) and even get so far as to build the calendar and start to send it but after the first few Kb's of data are sent the connection hangs and i eventually get a network error message telling me to check my connection. i tried it 6 or 7 times and get the same problem every time. i have emailed the iPhoto support people and they told me to clear the Network Access thinger on Keychain which i did but i haven't attempted to re-send the calendar (b/c if the "purchases" i made earlier clear it's gonna wipe out the ol' bank account). i want to try again from another connection but seeing as how i'm not the only one with this problem maybe it isn't worth it.
the other suggestion i got was to upgrade iPhoto but to do that i need to purchase iLife'08 and i really don't want to spend the cash on that either.

  • IPhoto 6 - Import issue, hangs at end

Folks, any help with this would be much appreciated.
I installed iLife 06 and all went well, other than the "recovered photos" issue which others have mentioned - no biggie as there were only 3.
But I have a problem now when importing from disc (HD or CD) - in that the import goes ahead, but freezes at the end. iPhoto doesn't freeze - you can look at folders / the library etc.. while the import process is hanging - and interestingly the library does include the photos within the import which has hung.
The import will hang for ages (hours, not seconds), and I can't stop it using the stop import button, nor can I quit iPhoto (hoping it will tidy up).
After 30mins+ of waiting, a couple of times, I've force-quit iPhoto. When opening again, the pics aren't in the library - but looking with the finder they do all exist in the originals folder, and the data folder.
A total rebuild of the library fails to include the pics.
Anyone else had this? I'm a pretty vanilla user - I haven't mucked about in my old iPhoto 5 library at all etc...
One related question - the following files are in my iPhoto Library - judging by their dates (I installed iLife on Jan 24) and names, are some old iPhoto 5 files?
    Feb 5 22:17 AlbumData.xml
    Jan 24 20:37 Albums
    Feb 5 19:04 Data
    Feb 5 22:20 Dir.data
    Jan 24 20:37 Library.data
    Jan 24 20:37 Library.iPhoto
    Feb 5 22:17 Library6.iPhoto
    Feb 5 22:20 Library6.temp
    Feb 5 19:05 Modified
    Jan 26 21:40 Originals
    Feb 5 22:20 Thumb32Segment.data
    Feb 5 22:20 Thumb64Segment.data
    Feb 5 22:20 ThumbJPGSegment.data
    Feb 5 22:17 iPhoto.ipspot
    Jan 24 21:15 iPhotoLock.data
    Any suggestions appreciated

    Jonathan:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The albums folder is a carryover from the V4 days and is no longer useful. You can trash it. Albums are now identified and linked within the AlbumData.xml file with no aliases being used any more.
The Library6.temp is not normally in a library folder. It's probably left over from one of your forced quits and can be deleted.
How much free space do you have on your HD? Have you tried rebuilding the library? Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. I'd select the first three options.

  • IPhoto 8.1.2 hangs on opening preferences?

Every time I open the preference pane for iPhoto 8.1.2 under a new Mountain Lion install the iPhoto app hangs and becomes unresponsive and requires a force quit.

Here's the link to get the download: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1562
If your version is from iWork '09, I believe there will not be a charge.  Otherwise, there will, and you would probably have to purchase iPhoto through the App Store.

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 - Hangs on any movie file import - crashes -help!

    Hey There Everyone!
I'm working in iphoto 9.5.1 and Mavericks and have been for weeks.  However, since my upgrade to Mavericks I've had no luck importing any movie file (.MOV,.mp4) into my library from either my iphone or my T2i Canon. Photos are fine. Videos are not.
I have browsed the boards here and have done the following:
HELD DOWN ALT/OPTION & created a new library.   IMPORT STILL HANGS AND CRASHES when trying to import videos
CREATED NEW USER and new library - IMPORT STILL HANGS & CRASHES
HAVE repaired permssions, then  deleted app, receipts and re-installed from APP store. Still crashes.
Photos import without any problem. If I have a mix, it imports the photos up until the video, then it's the spinning beach ball of death.
I get a "not responding" (even after an hour) and then I force quit. On re-opening I get: "A photo ahs been found in the iPhoto library that has not been imported. Would you like to import it? "   This is always the movie file and when I do this it hangs again. I end up saying no and it's put into a .recovered folder just outside my library.
All other functions seem to be working in Iphoto. Any help anyone has would be great!
    Thanks!
    Jon

Open the iPhoto Library as Terence Devlin as shown in this screenshot
and move the contents of the Auto Import folder
to a folder on the Desktop. Launch iPhoto and check to see if that message has gone away.  If it has you can try importing the files from the folder on the Desktop again.

  • IPhoto 9.4.1 hangs on library update

    Hi All,
    I've updated iPhoto to 9.4.1
At first launch iPhoto asks to update the photo library. I click OK, iPhoto shows a progress bar and hangs...
    Help!
    Thank you

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • IPhoto 7.1.1 hangs when Titles & Keywords are turned on

Like many others, I had the spinning beach ball problem after updating to 7.1.1. Following the popular advice, I repaired permissions, rebuilt thumbnails, and deleted preferences, the last of which seemed to solve the problem. But then, I began changing my settings back to the way I like them and suddenly I was getting the beach ball again. The problem is most noticeable when selecting Library>Photos.
As it turns out, having either or both View>Titles and View>Keywords checked causes iPhoto to hang. View>Ratings has no ill effect. I have tried turning them back on and off just to test this and I get the same results each time.
I'm curious to know if others are experiencing the same thing and are able to solve it the same way.

    Todd:
Rebuild the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the options to rebuild the database and repair permissions.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • When I try to "Share" selected photos from iPhoto, my Air 2 hangs (the app hangs, not the entire device). Any suggestions to make this functionality work?, iPhoto hangs instead of sharing photos

I select photos in iPhoto. I touch the "Share" icon. Then iPhoto hangs. The app is unresponsive to touch. I must fully close the app to get it to respond to my touch again. However, I cannot share these 10 photos, and it's driving me crazy.
Plus, this website would not display anything I typed in this post, until I touched the "Boldface" icon. Go figure.

    Upgrade to v9.4.1 or
Trash the HP Plug in from /Library/Application Support/iPhoto
There are two libraries where this plugin might be
    HD/ Library
    and
    HD/Users/Your Name / Library
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)

  • IPhoto 9.3.1 hangs upgrading database

I recently upgraded to Lion, and as part of that process, needed to upgrade my iPhoto and iPhoto database to iPhoto 11.
However, the upgrade hangs - the progress bar proceeds through to the finish, but after it goes away, iPhoto hangs, with very low CPU usage, and never comes back (even after hours).
I initially tried this with iPhoto 9.3. No go. When 9.3.1 came out, I tried that (on a saved copy of my pre-upgrade iPhoto database), with no change - still hangs, same behavior.
One of the fixes in 9.3.1 was to hangs while upgrading the iPhoto database, but obviously doesn't fix the problem I'm having.
Any suggestions on how to proceed with this?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
