Bug or feature: opacity and blend-if values wiped out when convert layer to smart object

I had some unexpected results in an action I put together. As I was stepping through it, I found that conversion of a layer to a smart object reset the opacity to 100% and removed any blend-if adjustments, though the blending mode was retained. This is certainly an unexpected effect--is it a bug?

Smart objects are always created at 100% and will wipe any other blending, the blending still exists WITHIN the Object, itself. This is the most logical and sensible way for it to work - you will realise this if you think it through. Blend modes on the other hand are sometimes copied from the source layer or Group, this is possible and its a kind of shortcut.
To get the original blending into the Smart Object layer - Open the Smart Object, right click on the layer with the correct bending Choose "copy layer style". Now Back in your master document you can "paste layer style" into the Smart Object layer.

How to keep Opacity and Blending Mode values

Hi!
I'm working with shades/highlights and since I have to make many shapes with the same values of color, opacity, blending mode, I wonder how can I make it to keep them configured, so I dont have to go to each path and change the values every time. The only value that stays is the color, but for example, the opacity changes everytime I start a new shape with the pen tool, and as I said, I'm working with shadings for a portrait, so I have to make lots of shapes with the same characteristics. Does somebody know a way to set these values and keep them "by default" so to say??

Can I sample a layer's "true" color despite its opacity and blend mode?

I'm doing some painting with a lot of layers set to different blend modes. I find that every time I want to paint on one of these layers, I have to go to that layer, set the opacity back to 100, change the blend mode back to "normal" sample the color, then change everything back and continue painting. I realize I can save a swatch for the color, but it can get confusing when you're using subtle color differences on multiple layers. It seems like there should be a modifier key to the tool that samples the layers "true" color discarding opacity and blend mode. Does this exist? Thanks!

This is exactly what I'm looking for chris....I don't suppose there's any way to toggle the tool's "current layer/all layers" functionality on the fly so i don't have to go to the tool and select which mode I"m in each time is there? I usually access this tool by just hitting "option" while using a brush. Would be cool if i could set "Option + shift" to use the eyedropper in "current layer" mode. Thanks for the speedy reply!

I''m looking to format the PCMCIA using a PC and format it to FAT16 and copy the boot image into it and then try to load from the PCMCIA afterward if it works I'll format it using the Supervisor engine 2.

This is a potentially complex issue.
Is this SUP configured to run as IOS native or CatOS Hybrid?
While in ROMMON can you do the 'dev' command and see whad drives are recognized. Then 'dir' the drives that the SUP recognizes.
Can you provide the screen captures as it boots?
You would be bette served by hacing a TAC case.

"Wipe out" feature automatically set off... wiped out phone entirely

As I looked at my phone, I noticed it had turned blank, with the apple sign- I think I remember it being like this when I first got my phone and started the installation process.
My phone was COMPLETELY wiped out, and I had to reinstall everything from the beginning, set all my settings, etc.
To see if I had anything backed up on iCloud, I logged on, and it said "wiped 20 minutes ago"...
What could have caused this? (wipe out feature)
I thought the only way this could be was used was if the iTunes account holder did it themselves, if they lost their phone and wanted to erase everything for protection of privacy etc.
Are there any other ways the wipe out feature can be set off, or does it mean someone hacked into my iCloud/apple account?
This is really frustrating...

Contacts and address book wiped out when syncing iphone

HELP!! All my address book contacts on my computer and all my iphone contacts were wiped out after syncing. Sadly, I have never backed up. I've gotten as far as library>app support>address book, but the files are computer mumbo jumbo with bits and pieces of my old info thrown in. Is there any way to convert this to human speak??? Contact info is included with your iPhone's backup, which is updated if needed as the first step during the sync process - if any of the data on your iPhone that is included with the backup has changed since the last sync.
If you haven't synced your iPhone again since the contact info was lost with the last sync, do not sync again and try restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup.
If this restores your contact info, before syncing contact info with the Address Book on your Mac, enter one unique contact in the Address Book on your Mac. Make the contact up if needed, which can be deleted later. This should provide a merge prompt when syncing contact info, which you want to select.

Log on to your account, and click on the picture of your phone. It will show you when you can upgrade and when your contract ends. You can go back two years (or one year, if you opted for a one year contract) to figure your start date for that contract.
If this was not your first contract, and you've been with Verizon for several years, you may need to call customer service to find out your original start date.

Bug or Feature? iTunes doesn't write ID3 Tags when you recorded in VBR mode

When you record music from a CD with iTunes (6.0.4 and 6.0.5) using higher bit rates (High Quality) together with VBR, then the iTunes database initialy shows a correct entry. But if you check the created mp3-files with the Finder application you will see that there is no id3-tag in the file.
When you later move your iTunes music folder, iTunes asks you to modfify everything concerning the embedded infos (id3 tags). If you then say "yes" your database is gone.
I saw a couple of postings where users complain about that iTunes loses the id3 tag when they burn a CD. I think that there has never been a physical ID3-Tag although the iTunes database shows a correct entry.
Is some kind of a bug fix out there or should I use Musicmatch within Parallels Desktop for Mac in order to properly record in VBR mode?

You can't see ID3 tags in the Finder. The data is imbedded in the song file itself.
Regular, commercially produced CDs do not support ID3 tag information. When you insert a CD and it opens in iTunes, the application will go out on the internet and look up the track information in the Gracenote (CDDB) database.
Then, when you rip the CD to an MP3 or AAC etc. the track information is then incorporated into the encoded song file. Using VBR shouldn't prevent the ID3 tag information from being transfered.
However, if you then burn a music CD from that file, the ID3 tag information is lost.

The short answer is, you don't. You can only sync with one iTunes library at a time.
The longer answer is, it's possible to set up what you want, but it's dangerous.
The smart answer is, sync it with your iMac, and sync the calendar and contacts with iCloud, your Exchange server, or another cloud service. Mail is not synced with a computer at all. Only with a mail server.

Little snitch and firefox trying to go out when not asked

On my minimac 10.4.11 I am running little snitch. It often tells me :
"firefox-bin wants to connect to addons.acelb.sj.mozilla.com on TCP port 443 (https)"
the confusion I am having is that firefox is not open, at least not on my user account. There are 3 others and sometimes they are still open.
I looked at my preferences , account and the login items does not list Firefox.
Anybody know if I should be concerned with this? I usually just tell it no for now.
My main browser is Safari but sometimes firefox is necessary so I haven't checked the never box

That is normal if running in any account, it wants to check if any addons have needed updates. Nothing to worry about really, but you can Deny it Forever, then Change the setting easily, or check for updates at their site.

TS4062 Drag and drop of purchase wiped out Library

I've purchased a few times in the past from iTunes, but this time for some reason the purchase showed up under the iTunes Store. I guess I was set up differently somehow. I was casting around for a way to get my purchase into the library, and I hit on "drag and drop", but it apparently overwrote my entire Library, since I only see the purchase there now. Maybe it's still there somehow, but it doesn't look like it.
I'll take any help I can get. I still have the Library contents on my iPod, but I don't see much on how to recover from there.

Weird, I've a feeling my post above was intended to address a differnt problem so I'm not quite sure why it ended up here. (The forums have been acting up though.)
Typically the damage is only to the library file and as long as the media is still where it ought to be it is quite easy to fix. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash for details. If the media has actually been removed see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

Any strategies to get up and running after Apple wiped out HD

Luckily I backed up my drive with Restrospect before my computer died and Apple replaced the HD and reinstalled 10.4. Now I have a brand new OS but want to get my things back the way they were.
Anyone have any strategies to minimize the downtime? Replace my entire "home" directory with the old one? Replace my Applications folder? How would I get my mail files back but in the new Mail client? I don't want to disrupt too much of what's on there already, just get back my old stuff.
I think Retrospect can wipe your drive and bring it back to the way it was, but I want to take advantage of this clean install. Any advice would be appreciated.

I think, first off, the Retrospects archives are a poor way to backup.. Make bootable clones from freeware Carbon Copy Cloner, and you can actually boot from the backup, and then clone back.
I am not certain how to specifically get back what you want from the Retrospect archive, Is it selected items? Is it the entire drive? You may want to install Retrospect on another machine, hook your up in Target Mode, and then either erase yours, and put back the Retrospect items (if it's the entire drive), or put back the selected items from the archive.

Computer and Ipod Crash - Everything wiped out on same day... no backup..

Technology destroys around me.
My comp and Ipod decide to stop working completely.
I get a new hardrive for my comp - it works.
I get a new Ipod Classic (due to warranty).
I try to get my music that i bought off of itunes store back...
but it costs money to do so bc i didn't make backup data?
Yet Itunes has a history of what I bought - i've seen it myself.
I want my music/games/applications back!
No WAY am i paying for it again!

If you didn't make a back-up of your music/video/games purchases to restore from (as you are advised to do when you make the purchase) then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. Left and right audio is cancelling out when I stream from macbook to apple TV2

When I stream from iTunes on my Macbook to my Apple TV the left and right audio sounds like it is cancelling each other out, meaning the lead vocal on songs is very low in the mix. Anyone know why this is happening?

Well there is something definitely wrong. If track is panned to left channel and the output virtual LEDs show left channel only then it has to be a problem somewhere else. Are you using a digital interface or the 1/8" audio out to mixer, headphone.
