BUG: Power Manager fails to autostart
Alright, this topic is a continuation of my conversation with Lenovo support on Twitter, as it has been a while and we were unable to resolve this problem.
Until recently I had Windows 7 x86 running perfectly normal with a number of ThinkVantage tools such as Power Manager, HDAPS protection, HotKey integration, etc. - all the bare necessities, though not the latest versions.
Recently I've formatted everything and installed Windows 7 SP1 x64. Immediately after installation I've installed the latest versions of Power Manager, etc. from Lenovo Support website (i.e. not through System Update). Upon installation, the Power Manager gave me this error:
Every time I rebooted my computer, the same thing showed up and the Power Gauge was not showing in the taskbar. After a bit of looking around, I have found that in the following registry entry: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run in the value rundll32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\PWMTR64V.DLL",PwrMgrBkGndMonitor the quotes were missing. Once I put them in, the Power Gauge started to show up during start up, however the message did not disappear.
Then I tried installing the APS protection which gave me a couple of the very same messages during installation. When the installation finished, I tried running the APS protection from the Control Panel, but it crashed every time.
Highly dissatisfied with all this, I've formatted the hard drive again, installed the same version of Windows and installed the Power Manager the very minute it finished installing, to be sure no other applications intervene. The result was the same.
From @lenovo on Twitter I've received an advice to uninstall the Power Manager and try installing it from System Update, however the same error message prevents me from uninstalling the Power Manager. I have also tried using the System Update to install the HDAPS (which I haven't installed this time), but it failed.
So there's my story. Any help would be very appreciated, as never before have I had a single issue with Lenovo tools.
Thanks!

Go to Solution.
All right, I've gone through some experiments in the VMWare. Installing my modified image and then the Power Manager gave the same errors I am experiencing. However, when I used the untouched image, everything worked fine.
So I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this topic and apologize to @Lenovo for taking their time with this issue.
Yet I am very interested in what it is with the modified image that makes the Power Manager installation use paths like C:\Program Files (x86)\... instead of C:\Progra~2 like it happens with the normal image, which I just verified comparing registry entries. And also why the ThinkVantage tools are the only ones affected by this.
But in any case, thanks to everyone again and I will accept this solution now.

Thininstaller - Power Manager fails to install on T410 - Windows 7 32bit
I have a TVSU Repository set up and it has been working great for us. I sometimes have to run the thininstaller command again after a machine images if the machine did a silent install of a BIOS upgrade the first time so other updates can't continue. That is OK for now.
My biggest concern is that thininstaller isn't installing the Power Manager in Windows 7 for our T410 laptops. The following line is in the thininstaller log file:
Info 2010-07-07 , 07:35:32
at Tvt.FileDownloader.IndexRepositoryDownloader.Download(FileToDownloadBean bean)
Message: the File to download is completed: \\server\d$\packages\drivers\lenovo\81u411ww\81u411ww_2_.xml
However - it never actually gets installed. If I manually do an update:
thininstaller /repository \\server\repository
It scans through but says no products were found for my system. That isn't right though, the Power Manager (81u411ww.exe) is available and applicable in the repository.
I've delete this package from the repository and re-downloaded it and still the same issue. This seems to be isolated to T410's (2518-F3U) units.
Any idea why thininstaller isn't installing Power Manager? I have full log files I can provide but I didn't want to spam this post. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
-Chris
Solved!
Go to Solution.Well, in case anyone else runs into this issue - I am getting around the issue by simply deleting the depencies on the package. Now ThinInstaller is detecting it correctly on my machines. I am not exactly sure what version of Power Manager introduced this issue but simply removing the dependencies works for us.

[Solved] KDE power managment fails
Just did a fresh arch install on my laptop and put KDE on it but power-devil won't work like it should. It doesn't see the laptop battery and doesn't detect the cpu frequency scaling ability. I'm kind off clueless about this one since power managment used to work out of the box from KDE SC 4.2 throughout 4.4.

you don't need acpid. i don't have it and powerdevil works fine. -
How do I install a patch? (xfce4-power-manager tray icon patch)
Sorry if this is a stupid question or if the answer can be found elsewhere, but I googled and searched the forums and couldn't find any answers.
xfce4-power-manager had for the longest time had a tray icon showing battery status, and they recently decided to remove it in favor of a xfce-panel only icon. Bringing it back was requested on bugzilla and a patch was released.
But I really have no idea what to do with it. Can someone shine some light on this for me?

Hi there,
I am running gnome-power-manager on a system which is connected to an APC Back-UPS CS 500. It appears gnome-power-manager fails to recognize the UPS, however. In the preferences window, I only have an "On AC Power" and a "General" tab. AFAIK there ought to be an "On UPS Power" tab as well.
The UPS is connected correctly, as I can query it via apcaccess.
Any hints?
Edit: Just found http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=75730
Gonna see if this fixes it.

Nope. As I said before:

I have an iMac G4 PowerPC with OS 10.5.? After deleting 17G of music files to make room on the 74G drive, The iPhoto and iWeb updates seemed to load okay, but the OS 10.5.8 update failed - message opened said the computer encountered an error and must shut down. Now I get the blue screen. Startup with 'V' pressed shows multiple lines saying: error-can't find IntelCPU Power Manager. What now?? I reset PRAM, I think.....?????
I am concerned that you might have applied a system updated intended for an Intel iMac, while you have a PPC (non-Intel) iMac. Your PPC OS should not be looking for an "IntelCPU Power Manager."
Have you tried booting from the 10.5 install DVD/CD and repairing the hard drive, plus repairing permissions?
If you done the repairs mentioned above, and your problem still persists, you can also try doing a safe boot. (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 ) Then, if none of these things worked, if I were in your shoes (it's hard to diagnose these things without being there in person) I would first check that there is adequate disk space, then I would boot from the 10.5 DVD/CD install disk and reinstall the operating system. There is an option to do an archive and install preserving user files/settings, that would be the option you want, as it will save your files but install a new OS. Make sure you have a good backup of your files first. If you do not have one, use "target mode" to copy all your files before embarking on an new OS install. Assuming that you do succeed with this install, then use Software Update to get the right updates for your iMac. -
After a one week logout and shutdown my macpro 1,1 laptop running OSx 10.6.8 shows a black screen at startup attempts. The battery is fully charged and both resetting the power manager and zapping the PRAM have failed to permit startup. What else can I try?

Password Settings bug in Lenovo Power Manager ?
On my w530 I created a new power profile in Lenovo Power Manager, but no matter how many times I change it to NOT require a password on wakeup from sleep, the settings keep reverting from 'No' to 'Yes' (as in Yes, require password).
I open Power Man as admin, change 'Yes' to 'No', click apply and verify that it says 'No'. Then i close power manager and reopen it, and it once again says 'Yes'.
What is going on?
Moderator Note; subject edited to better reflect subjectThere's a stickied thread at the top of this board which explains / discusses ThinkPad software for Windows 8, hopefully the information you are looking for is there.

[Solved] power management during kde startup not loading
Hi,
after solving one problem here comes another. From on side it's onying, but on the other side I lesrn a lot about my system.
Well this time after the last kde update, I get the following message:
KDE Power Management System could not be initialized. The backend reported the following error:
No valid Power Management backend plugins are available. A new installation might solve this problem.
Please check your system configuration.
So I went to:System Settings>>Power Management and the pane on the right is greyed out and there is a message:
Power Management configuration module could not be loaded. The Power Management Service appears not to be running.
This can be solved by starting or scheduling it inside "Startup and Shutdown"
System Settings>>Startup and Shutdown>>Service Manager, shows that Power management is running.
If I try to start upower manually I get the following message:
/usr/lib/upower/upowerd
(upowerd:30849): UPower-WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.freedesktop.UPower: Connection ":1.77"
is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.UPower" due to security policies in the configuration file
(upowerd:30849): UPower-WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out
I found this post: http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.p … KDE-4-11-1
where it states tha this was a bug in some previous kde releases.
Well apparently it happened again here.
I read somewhere that it could be because the policykit rules weren't update. I tried to understand policykit conf files but for no avail. I'm twice lefthanded on that matter.
Any takers?
PS.: Checking with journalctl -r I found that upowerd was masked, so I did;
#systemctl unmask upower.service
than I enabled it;
#systemctl enable upower.service
and if you want to start it right away than;
#systemctl start upower.service
Well that's it.

arojas wrote:is the upower daemon running?
Not sure about that. I installed upower but I don't know how to configure it or if any configuration is needed. If I understand official documentation correctly, upower daemon should be started automatically if some application needs it.
cfr wrote:Are you sure that you installed everything necessary for that to work? Which parts of KDE did you install, for example?
I have full KDE installation (# pacman -S kde-meta) so problem should be in my Arch installation, no in KDE itself. I have only installed Arch, Xorg, proprietary Nvidia drivers and KDE so far, so there is only small chance I break or messed up something - it's more likely something I didn't install yet or didn't know how to configure.

Gnome Power Manager after Last Upgrade
Hi There,
I just did a pacman -Syu and upgraded lots of packages which also include dbus etc.. I just restarted and puzzled that GNOME Power Manager is a lot different now then it's used to be before the upgrade. First of all, it's systray logo is different. Then it's menu, it's options, everything about it are different. I can't see an upgrade in the pacman.log for gnome-power-manager but it's completely changed..
When I pull the AC power and work on the batteries, it doesn't change the status of the applet. So the applet is very useless right now.. Although it doesn't seem to be an applet while it can't be moved around or I can't change anything about it..
Before the upgrade, I was able to get information by simply right clicking on it selection Information.. But now, even that option is completely changed.. Is there something wrong ?Hello.
Is the bug fixed already? I have some problems with gnome-power-manager, dbus and hal. After installing Gnome everything was just fine, after I reboot I cannot start HAL:
[root@ichi ~]# /etc/rc.d/hal start
:: Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer [FAIL]
[root@ichi ~]# lshal
error: dbus_bus_get: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.FileNotFound: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory
gnome-power-manager gives msgbox with error about connecting to DBUS.

Hi mieric56
Try this:Go to Settings->Apps->All->Find Power Manager->Press/Tap on it->Clear data ->restart your phone.
If the problem persists you could try a factory reset.Backup anything important first.
Hope this helps,

Hi there,
Since I upgraded my imac (late 2012) from 10.8.4 to 10.8.5 today, i can't plug any usb flash drive, or my iPhone, to the USB port of the wired keyboard anymore; I have a power management message asking to plug the usb device to the imac directly!!
It was working perfectly just before the upgrade, is it a bug, any idea?FYI...
I tried reporting the bug but so far have had no luck being able to do so.
I went to the developer center as Eric suggested and signed in with my Apple ID.
Once there I clicked on "Bug Reporting".
That took me to a Bug Reporting page with the heading "Submitting Bugs and Feedback".
On the side of that page is a little box that says "Apple Bug Reporter: Sign in with the Apple ID you used to register as an Apple Developer to submit a bug."
(This step seems somewhat ridiculous since I had to sign in with my Apple ID just to get this far. Now it wants me to sign in again.)
When I click the the "Sign in" button I get this:
An error has occurred. Please report the error to Apple Inc. by emailing the error detail to [email protected]
So, it seems the bug reporter doesn't work. This has been going on since the time of my last post here. -
[SOLVED] Lid doesn't suspend anymore with xfce power manager
The options "When laptop lid is closed" are set to suspend (and used to work), but still, when I close my lid, nothing happens. Using the logout dialog or the suspend button my keyboard works. Is it a problem with xfce-power-manager, or ACPI not registering the lid event anymore? Any idea how to fix that?
[edit]
I solved that problem by removing ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-power-manager.xml, killing the power manager and reloging in my session to flush the settings. Then I reconfigured the lid closed action to suspend (and everything else to my liking).
Last edited by benob (2009-07-08 17:36:47)Sorry to bother you again, but for some reason it doesn't work anymore...
Somehow it can't lock the GNOME session, because when I enter the above line from /etc/acpi/handler.sh manually as root in TTY1, I get this error:
** Message: Failed to get session bus: Befehlszeile »dbus-launch --autolaunch=c9375f4ea0008d92177b28db000009ae --binary-syntax --close-stderr« brach mit von Null verschiedenem Beenden-Status 1 ab: No protocol specified\nAutolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n
If I enter this command inside GNOME, everything works just fine, it locks the screen and suspends.
EDIT:
Setting the XAUTHORITY environment variable properly did the trick. Therefore, I borrowed some lines from here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Su … losing_lid

Problem with installing power manager
Hello,
I've been trying to install power manager 6.36 without success.
The first setup which installs files into "c:\swtools\readyapps\pwrmgrv" goes well. but when im trying to install Power Manager and click next to install to the destination folder ("Program files (x86)\ThinkPad\Utilities) it freezes.
http://postimage.org/image/4plchblmx/ - freezes here and cant do anything but exit the installation.
After it failed couple times I've been trying to install my original power manager 3.48 but it freezes just like 6.36.
*tried to install it with Manual Install & Silent Install - both failed.
What can I do?I had the same issue with some sw earlier on my laptop with Win7/64 bit. That sw didn't want to be installed and needed the old .NET vesion. At the same time my system restricted old version .NET environment installtion process from M$ site or from sw installation package as I had up to date .NET. The result was I couldn't avoid that strange behaviour.
