Bug: renaming a file on desktop.

When I click on a desktop icon to rename it, the text disappears.  I have to click the icon and then CMD-I if I want to see what I want to rename.  This started happening on with the first update to Lion -- 10.7.1 and got carried over in 10.7.2.

Hello,
I haven't experienced any of these problems. I would begin by suggesting to log in to another user account, or create another user account (guest would not suffice, in this case). Try and recreate the problem in the secondary account. What happens?

BUG: Renaming a file causes Finder to restart. This started occurring after installation of the Security Update 2008-008. I can't rename files or folders.
Is there a solution? A workaround? A software update? I repaired permissions but that didn't help.

Here's an excerpt of the crash dump referenced in the Console utility application.

The first few lines shows that LockRenameUnicode is called when renaming the file, then the Finder crashes. What is causing this crash in Finder in Mac OS X 10.4.11 after installing the Security Update 2008-008?

  • File sync error after renaming jpg file on desktop

I changed the file name of a photo in my desktop backup of my Treo 755p photos from the default format of Photo_[date]_xyz.jpg to Matisse by fire2_101208.jpg.
    The path is:
    C:\Program Files\Palm\[username]\Photos\offline copy location\7dba\Palm on Card\Matisse by fire2_101208.jpg
Now I get the following error after hotsync.
Unable to sync media file 'Matisse by fire2_101208.jpg' on desktop. Error code: 32.
    OK Media with 1 message(s)
I also changed two others to
    Matisse by fire1_101208.jpg and
    Matisse by fire3_101208.jpg
but am not getting errors on those.
I can open the file specified so I don't think it is corrupted.
    I'm using Hotsync 6.0.1.
I could not find error 32 anywhere. Is ther a list of all the Hotsync errors somewhere?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Don

as far as i understood the explanation, you renamed the picture manually by going into the path that you stated in your post right?
when your rename the file, have you check if it did show the file extensions?
try to reveal the file extensions by going back to the location (folder). click on tools>folder options>view>uncheck hide extensions for known file types.
then click ok. try to see on what's the difference in the 3 files you mentioned. i suspect that the erring file has 2 jpeg extensions on it.

  • Renaming a file on desktop = infinite beachball bug

I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro 13''. Replicating the bug:
    1. I am trying to rename files on the desktop (screenshots, long names).
    2. I click on the file and press ENTER to allow renaming
    3. I click at the end of the name to loose selection.
Result: Infinite beachball loading icon is displayed and it is impossible to interact with the desktop (*edit: in fact, finder) anymore until windowServer/*finder is restarted. It is possible to do everything else (window management, programs etc.), except the desktop *use finder.
This happens often. 10% of the time. *I can replicate it 100% of the time. Ok, I am too eager to assume. The issue is more complicated. Once the problem is on, even after restart, the issue is 100% replicable (a series of files). Yet I this is not always the case (a series of good renames)  I have yet to confirm if restart defers how quickly I encounter the bug. *Restart does not improve situation. Does someone have the same issues?

  • Finder Bug Renaming files with cover flow

If I try to rename a file using finder with cover flow using left and right arrows for moving in the filename, it goes up and down on file selection

A similar issue is evident in "List" view, when renaming a file inside a folder whose "disclosure triangle" is expanded. If you happen to be working a few levels down, it closes them all.
    Maddening!
If you feel so inclined, please submit a bug report. Hopefully issues that receive a lot of complaints will be addressed.

  • FM to Rename a File on my Desktop(Presentation server) thru SAP

    Hi,
I have a requirement wherein, I know the correct path along with the file name of any particular file stored on my desktop. I need to change the name of that file according to the client's naming convention.
Does anybody knows the name of SAP Standard Function Module by which you can change the name of a file on Presentation Server.
    Thanks in Advance.
    With Best Regards,
    Nitin

    Hi nitin,
    1. Exactly for this purpose
i have developed an INDEPENDENT SUBROUTINE (FORM)
      in which we pass
        a) old file name
        b) new file name
and it will rename the file
(This will work in WINDOWS Operating system)
(we can modify it very little for other OS also_
    2. just copy paste in new program.

  • Bug renaming file upon initial import?

I'm trying to set LR to import and rename my files under the following convention:
    YYYYMMDD_(custom text)_(original file suffix)
    I.e. DSC_0023.NEF would become 20080229_ABC_0023.NEF in LR.
I'm finding that LR names the files 20080229_ABC_.NEF, 20080229_-1.NEF, 20080229_ABC_-2.NEF, 20080229_ABC_-3.NEF, etc. so it's not retrieving the file suffix properly.
However, when I select the files again and use the (F2) Library|Rename facility, the files are renamed properly. So this seems to be a problem just on the initial import from the device. Obviously the workaround exists, but is dependent on remembering to do that before I do other things like backup the original files to other drives and has been a problem in the past.
Any ideas if this is a bug or something I'm not doing right? Apologies if this has been reported before -- I tried searching.
    Thanks!

  • Kde 4.6.1, 4.6.2 widget-folderview, rename a file gives an error.

I already submitted the issue on bugs.kde.org:
    https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=270414
    Version:           unspecified (using KDE 4.6.2)
    OS:                Linux
When i rename a file using folderview, the file is renamed, but an error is
    triggered.
    Reproducible: Always
    Steps to Reproduce:
-place a folderview widget on the desktop
-rename a file from 'oldname' to 'newname'
    Actual Results:
    - see the error message: "The file or folder oldname does not exist."
    - see that the file has been renamed to 'newname'
    Expected Results:
Don't throw an unuseful error message, it is clear that 'oldname' does not
    exists anymore.
...but it seems that at least someone can't reproduce it on kubuntu packages
    ------- Comment #1 From Nikos Papas 2011-04-09 18:22:21 -------
I cannot reproduce the error. Using KDE 4.6.2, 64bit, Kubuntu packages.
Can somebody try to reproduce under arch please?
    Thank you very much!
    Last edited by kokoko3k (2011-04-11 10:59:19)

    I can reproduce this error.
I tried renaming a file in the folder view, and renaming a file in a sub-folder off of the folder view.
In all cases, I got the "does not exist" error, and the re-named file.
    Arch: 64-bit
    KDE: 4.6.2

  • Cannot Delete CPTL file from Desktop using Vista

    Hi All,
I cannot Delete CPTL file from Desktop using Vista. Explorer
crashes. It is a Captivate 2 file.
I have tried (with no luck):
    - logging in as a different user and deleting the file.
    - running explorer as an Administrator
    - uninstalling Captivate.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Raef

    Hi Raef,
That is a strange issue. Here are a couple more ideas you
    could try:
    - Have you tried renaming the file (including suffix)?
    - Have you rebooted?
    - Do you get any error messages when trying to delete, such
    as "Acess Denied"?
    - Is your machine networked? Is it possible someone else has
    the file open?
    - Can the file be moved to another location or put in a
    folder (and then deleted)?
    - Have you tried using the Command Prompt / DOS mode to
    delete the file?
It sounds like it could be a Vista issue so I would look at
the Microsoft Vista forums too. Sorry I do not have an exact
    answer.

  • Can't RENAME a file like Windows can?

Real easy. I just need to rename a file from this:
    A2Capital.jpg
    to this:
    a2capital.jpg
I do this in Windows and of course every OS I have used since the 1990s at least. Why can't this be done in OS X 10.4.9?
I am on a network drive of a Windows Server, if that makes a difference. The error I always get is
The name a2capital with extension ".jpg" is already taken. Please choose a different name.
Oh, come on. This is an easy one, right?
It happens whether I click the filename or if I Show Info.
Mac Pro Quad 3.0 Mac OS X (10.4.9) I usually run Windows XP

    OS X's filesystem, HFS+, is case-preserving, meaning
it stores the upper and lowercase characters of
    file/folder names, however it's not case-sensitive
(unless you specify it as such when formatting the
disk in Disk Utility). In a case-preserving
filesystem, MyFile, mYfILE, myfile, and MYFILE all
reference the same file. There is no need to be rude
to Kappy, he was just trying to help. Here's some
reading if you want to learn more:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HFS_Plus
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparisonof_filesystem
    s#fn_35
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Case-preserving
Note: HFSX in 10.3 added the ability to format a disk
as Case-Sensitive. If you didn't reformat your disk
when you got your Mac, it's Case-Preserving, not
    Case-Sensitive.
I see what you mean by case sensitive. I think Macs and Windows are similar in this regard. All that means is that if I type in a command to run, or I type a filename to launch, the OS is forgiving if I say "BLaH.JpG" for a file that is really "blah.JPG" -- if it's on the hard drive like that already.
You bet. But in both Mac and Windows it seems, I can rename the file to whatever mixed case I want and get no errors.
I only have this problem on the network drive,
which like I said is a Windows 2003 Server share.
Because your question is in the context of renaming a
file on a remote Windows share, then all the talk of
whether HFS is case-sensitive or not doesn't matter.
I'm assuming the share you're connected to when
trying to do this rename is NTFS? Macs use Samba to
connect to Windows shares. I've never tried to do
what you're doing through a samba share. It could be
Samba, or it could be how you have your share set up.
It does look like a Samba idiosyncrasy. I have used Samba before in FreeBSD (a relative to Darwin/OS X) but I would have no idea if that was the case there.
Samba has traditionally had some oddities, bugs, and problems due to the nature of open-sourcing a Windows custom secret network system. But Macs do claim to be interoperable with other networks and systems. This can't be unusual. Lots of people need to connect to a Windows share.
Ha, to be honest, I don't think I would even try to setup a NFS share on the Windows server, and there aren't any UNIX servers at this location.
Who heads up the Samba stuff for Mac OS?

  • Rename all files in a folder?

At the end of everyday on a recent month-long trip, I dumped photos from a card into a folder on my desktop, and cleared the card for the next day's use. Now that I'm back home, I have photos in several folders with the same name (i.e. in folder Monday, file DSC_001 and in Tuesday, file DSC_001).
How can I go in and rename/renumber the files so that if I ever drop them into a common folder, one won't overwrite another?
I have several thousand photos, so renaming each file one by one will take a lot of time.
    Thanks for your help!

You've got a built-in file re-namer (if you want to add something before or after the existing name) in a sample Applescript. You don't have to know how to do scripting to use it.
First, turn on the script menu:
    1. Double-click the AppleScript Utility program in /Applications/AppleScript to open it.
    2. Check both +Show Script Menu In Menu Bar+ and +Show Computer Scripts+.
The little black AppleScript icon appears near the right of your menu bar, listing all the built-in scripts.
    3. Close/Quit the utility.
Then, use the Add to File Name script on items in your folder:
    1. In the Finder, select the files you want renamed - probably a Select All inside one of the folders you mentioned.
    2. From the Script menu, choose Finder Scripts > Add to File Names.
    3. In the dialog, type what you want appended to the font name and click the Prefix or Suffix button.
To reverse this at any time, use the Script > Finder Scripts > Trim File Names command.

HI, I was thinking of some thing, but I need to know how to make java rename a file/folder like you do via dos.
    Hope this is clear.

So say I have "myfile.txt", and wanna rename to "yourfile.txt".

  • Renaming a file by only changing case results in Permission prompt

We have a user who is unable to rename a file on their desktop if just changing a letter to upper or lower case.  For example, if a user has a file "file123.txt" and they attempt to rename it to "File123.txt", the user gets a pop
up saying they need permission from their own account. However if we try to rename that same file to "file456.txt" it works no problem.
    Some environment information:
    -Domain Workstation and User
-The problem affects ALL files in the same respect
-The Desktop is redirected to the server
-The user does have Full ownership and Full NTFS permissions to their files
-The issue only happens when making the subtle case change, not fully renaming the file or adding to it

    Hi,
I would say this is not what you think----this is an issue with your system. In fact,  about Windows File
System, File and directory names can be up to 255 characters long, including any extensions. Names preserve case, but are not case sensitive. NTFS makes no distinction of filenames based on case.

  • Renaming a file in Preview for Mavericks

When I try to rename a file in preview (File -> Rename) and I start typing the input box just gets overwritten I can't see the file name anymore:
    Start:
    Bug:
    Bug 2:
Also the only way to get it to work is this new "Tags" drop down with the arrow, but there A) no key command to get there (terrible UI) and B) you can't save it once you are in.

This sounds like a bug from the install. I use Mavericks and do not have this problem. I suggest reinstalling: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13871

  • Renaming a file in a filechooser

    renaming a file in a filechooser -
Single click or right click on a folder of a JFileChooser allows you to edit the new file name ina textfield. When the focus is lost from the text field the folder name is changed to the older one. But after editing the file name in the textfield and press 'Enter' the folder or file is updated with the new name. Can anybody tell me if there is a way to make it work on loosing focus ???
    Thanks in advance
