Bug report: French quotation marks

I have the French keyboard enabled and there is no way, I have found, to enter the French quotation marks which are the following: « »
This is not the same as entering << or >> because « and » are each one character and has its own typographic style.
I thought the 1.1.4 update would have this solved but it doesn't seem to be.

  • Why does Pages not support French quotation marks?

    Hello,
    I've got the following problem:
    I like using Pages to write my texts. But unfortunately *Pages doesn't support French quotation marks, e.g. « Example. »* what Microsoft Office supports since years. Pages does know the other quotation marks „Example.“.
    An other particularity of French quotation marks is, that there is a special space between the quotation marks and the word required; those are called "espaces insécables" (indivisible spaces?) which word inserts automatically.
    The same problem exists with other special marks (i.e. "?", "!", ";" and ":"), which require an "espace insécable".
    This is just a killer-problem, when writing a paper, which is important. So I can't really use Pages and do have to use Word...
    Can anyone help me?
    I hope this will be fixed in the next version of iWork!
    Thanks a lot.

    I found a reference to the non-breaking space being alt+(space). I think it should work, but I'm surprised that it does when documents are imported from Word.
    I've looked for that on the swiss-french keyboard layout. In fact, it is shift + alt + space. But, as I already remarqued, this doesn't really help, because Pages obviously doesn't know how to treat those spaces, that is to say that there won't be any difference if you do a non-breaking space or a normal space...

    There are two models for supporting this, either you do it in the application (Microsoft) or you do it in the font file (Apple). There are further implications depending on whether you change the content of the character stream or the content of the glyph stream.
    The principle of is to preserve plain text as plain as at all possible. The more one manipulates plain text, the less possible it becomes to search plain text since search systems have to include private synonyms that ignore this or presuppose that.
    Apple's original idea was to do as much as possible in 'glyph space' / 'data space' in order to leave 'character space' / 'code space' in the font file as plain as possible. Finite state machines in Apple TrueType 2 are able to do the type of thing you are asking for, but at this point there is no TrueType 2 font file with these features.
    You may be right, I don't really know it. There must be another solution.
    Nevertheless, this problem has to be fixed by our little friends in Cupertino... I would like Page to work how I expect it to do that...
    Well, thanks a lot for all.

  • French quotation marks

    I'm trying to use Pages '08 in my French classes. I actually find it quite complete: the proofreader is particularly nice.
    One must-have feature is the use of French-style quotation marks. Called "guillmets", they look like pairs of less than signs and greater than signs. When running in a French locale, I still get American style quotations. Anyone know how to use the << and >> style?
    LC

    Funnily (or tragically) enough it seems like Pages does not support les guillemets natively. It does support German Anführungszeichen though, so they should be aware that there is a difference.
    Using a US-extended keyboard layout, you can type « using alt+backslash, and you can type » using shiftaltbackslash.

  • Indesign cc14 - quotation marks won't change to regular.

    My quotation marks won't change to regular marks
    my document has french quotation marks : << >>
    and i need the regular ones. " "
    i already checked the preferences / dictionary, but they're already set to regular.

    Language is assigned to text at the character level. Dictionary prefs affect the dictionary to be used when a particular language is assigned.
    You can see the language assigned to text either in the dropdown at the bottom of the Character panel, it's analog in the Control panel when in text mode, or in the definition dialogs for the styles applied to selected text.

  • Typographically correct apostrophes and quotation marks? Bug?

    I am using the trial of Pages '08 (3.0) on a German Mac OS-X 10.4.10. Typographic quotation marks are switched on.
    Apostrophe:
    Whenever I type a phrase in English with an apostrophe, for instance the word "Let's" it uses a left single quotation mark (‘) instead of the right single quotation mark.
    Quotation marks and languages:
    Likewise, with typographic quotation marks set in the program settings, Pages uses the German quotation marks (which look like this: „word‟) although the text language is set to English. This behaviour occurs with English and English, GB. In Word this behaviour changes with the text language setting.
    I am a recent switcher, so maybe a solution to this problem is already known. If not, should I report this as a bug via feedback?

    Ian, yes, that would be Smart Quotes in English.
    You not being able to get German quotation marks in English would seem to be the same problem. I guess this is a bug then (or a missing feature) as I would expect this to change with each language (e.g. French has guillemots etc.).
    Would perhaps having several keyboard input setup in OS-X help here?
    Thanks for the link to Tom Gewecke's page. Tom, I'd be interested to hear of any other good recommendations. Are NeoOffice/OpenOffice good in this respect? Word compatibility and the ability to track changes is a must for me (as client's work with Office), but I'd rather invest in Microsoft Office when the new Universal version becomes available? I like the more simplified interface of Pages, which is why I'm trying the new version out via the trial.

  • FCP 7 BUG REPORT: "close gap" screws up marker locations

    First off, it's wonderful to finally have automatically moving markers. Thanks.
    the bug:
    If you "close gap" between two clips (ctrl-G), the markers past that point will ONLY update their locations correctly if the play head is positioned at the start of the gap. If the play head is in the middle of the gap, it does something wrong and unexpected. I edit with ctrl-G a lot, so this is a problem for me.
    Also, while I greatly appreciate the new marker list export tool (which makes the self-moving markers useful), giving a longer-than-short name to a marker screws up the column spacing of the export. I propose having an option in the export box to automatically truncate long names to preserve column spacing. Or you could just space all columns based on the longest name.
    Thanks

    I posted it as a bug report as well.
    I'm starting to see that these automatically moving sequence markers are of no use the way they behave now. For example, select half the clips in the timeline, type "+100" to move everything 100 frames, and watch how the markers don't keep up with the movement. Or just click and drag to move the clips. If you were using the markers to know where your VFX shots and commercial breaks are, you have now lost them. These sequence markers are only of use if they ALWAYS remain where they are in relation to the media below them.
    Also, there needs to be an option for a specific marker to NOT ripple it -- not just a global toggle. For example, on a TV show you often have a specific length you need to hit in 23.98 to end up with the right length in 29.97 DF and it's nice to put a marker at that point in the sequence. But that doesn't work with ripple mode on.
    In short, I like the new feature but it needs to be implemented more intelligently to be useful.

  • French words with quotation mark can't be searched

    I'm using RH7 to create a project in French. When generating
    the WebHelp I enable the "TOC", "Index" and "Search" tabs.
    Everything looks fine until I use the Search Function. I type a
    word with quotation mark, such as "l'émetteur" or "d'actions",
    in the search box. It returns no result although I know for sure
    they appear in my project in many places.
    Please help!

    This is definitely a problem in RH7. Has anybody found a solution? Please?
    Another problem is that the index does not sort alphabetically. RH is putting these words at the end of the index, even though diacritics do not affect alphabetical order in French:
    âge
    èdition
    ètats
    Anybody?

  • How to escape the quotation mark?

    I need to pass a Link Column from page 1 to page 2. I just found a bug in my program. When there is quotation mark in the string, the corresponding query cannot be displayed in page 2. However, using the same query, I can get the correct result in the SQL*Plus console. I don't know why. Is it because of the quotation mark? Thanks!

    Thank you so much for your detailed explanation!
    For your standard report query, I have a question
    SELECT EMPNO, ENAME
    FROM EMP
    WHERE '"' || ENAME = :P126_TEXT
    {code}
    In my opinion, as long as I use <b>:P126_TEXT</b> in this query, and <b>:P126_TEXT</b> contains <b>"</b>, I will get this error:ERROR:
    ORA-01740: missing double quote in identifier
    Is that correct?

  • Spacing inverted commas - quotation marks

    En English there is no spacing between quotations marks and the word famed, like “quotation marks”, but in French there is a spacing like : " guillemets ".
    I write in French, so how can I create a permanent spacing between quotations marks and the word famed ?
    Thanks you very much.

    Glad to read that I am not the unique user bored by this feature.
    I asked it to Apple's Bugs Hunters since october 2007 (when Pages offered only the curly quotes).
    _Go to "Provide Pages Feedback" in the "Pages" menu_,
    write something like:
    Please, enhance the "replace quotes" feature to match languages requirements.
    In French from France, we MUST use :
    LEFT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION MARK ($00AB) + NARROW NO-BREAK SPACE ($202F)
    NARROW NO-BREAK SPACE ($202F) + RIGHT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION MARK ($00BB)
    In some other countries using French these spaces are not used so it would be useful
    to offer a GUI allowing us to set the substitution STRINGS according to the local rules.
    A single developer like the author of Bean.app was able to offer that in its FREE product.
    I guess that you are able to do that too.
    Then, cross your fingers, and wait _at least_ for iWork'10

  • « instead of quotation marks

    So yeah pretty self explanatory. Only when I am typing on Apple products (Pages, Keynote, iMessage etc) will the quotation mark (Shift + Right Enter) turn into a double arrow thing.
    I looked online and many people were having this problem but on Microsoft for Mac. The solution was that it thought you were typing in French.. I have been through Langauges and Regions and Keyboard, but everything is set to English or my region Australia.
    It has been bugging me for a while now.. it's probably just some simple thing I missed out.
    Thankyouu

    Oops I meant Shift + Button next to RIght Enter

  • Iphoto quotation mark after jpg

    Iphoto 9.4.1 with Macos 10.8.2 in french
    When you send photos via iPhoto (and not by Mail) after receiving e-mail, if you want to open the pictures attached, you will encounter a problem because the software after jpg has added a quotation mark " (eg IMGP1355. jpg" instead of IMGP1355.jpg ). To see the pictures with your favorite software, you must edit the file name and delete the quote mark " final.

  • Bug report: 3.2; DAC; GridControl; Navigation - Invalid reaction to mouse drag

    Hi,
    This is a bug report, I think.
    I have a one-column GridControl with mandatory column. Normally, DAC framework prohibits from navigation out of empty field and emits one of those DAC-1002 or DAC-603 errors. The only exception I noticed was a double-click on another row. In this case navigation allowed but an error is still produced.
    Today I was playing with this GridControl and discovered that I can drag the yellow frame across rows. And here comes a bug - GridControl doesn't change the current row on InfoBus according to current selection marked by yellow frame.
    In my case it brings the following problem: if the cursor is placed on the new empty row, user drags the cursor to another row and then tries to use any other navigation means except dragging, he gets a navigation error. DAC framework still thinks that the current row is the empty one and produces an error telling that the attribute cannot be empty.
    Dev Team, any comments?
    Regards,
    Vladimir

    Hmm... Nobody answers. I'll try another variation of the same question.
    DAC framework implicitly validates attributes on the base of Mandatory constraint in the Entity Object definition. Is it possible to set the level of this validation? For example, I want to conduct validation only when user navigates out of the row or the whole rowset, but not when he just leaves a field.
    Regards,
    Vladimir

  • Bug report: A keyboard layout is incorrect on the remote with Japanese keyboard

    This is a bug report for Microst Remote Desktop
    ===================================================
    ## Summary
    A keyboard layout is incorrect on the remote with Japanese keyboard
    ## Version Information, I tested
    * Client
        * Case 1
            * MacBook Pro with JIS106 Keyboard
            * Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
            * Microsoft Remote Desktop 8.0.24308
        * Case 2
            * MacBook Pro with JIS106 Keyboard
            * Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.1
            * Microsoft Remote Desktop 8.0.24308
    * Remote
        * Case 1
            * Windows 7 Professional Japanese
        * Case 2
            * Windows Server 2008R2 Datacenter Japanese
        * Case 3
            * Windows Server 2012R2 Datacenter Japanese
    ## Detail of bug
    When login from Mac OS X with Microsoft Remote Desktop, the keyboard layout is always incorrect on the remote.
    The client machine have a built-in keyboard of JIS 106 layout,
    and the primary language is set to Japanese.
    But on the remote, the keyboard layout is US 101.
    So a input of Shift+2 does not result " but @.
    I've seen the above behavior on the 3 remote enviornments described the above.
    This bug did not occcur with Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1, even if the system language is English and keyboard layout is Japanese.
    ## Captures
    I've took some of screen captures.
    I'm sorry for the capture includes Japanese words, so I added description in English.
    Capture 1:
    Mac OS X Keyboard Setting
    Capture 2:
    Windows Server 2012R2 Screen Keyboard
    Capture 3:
    Windows Server 2012R2 Screen Keyboard, with a additional registry key configured.

    This bug also affects the Canadian English settings.  If the client is set to Canadian English with a US keyboard the remote server is setup using a Canadian French keyboard.  Using the language selection in the toolbar you can temporarily correct
    the problem but the keyboard resets to french at the most inopportune times.  The was a problem in the earlier RDP client and was fixed so it's sad to see it reoccur in the new client.
