Bug: "Show guides..." preferences do not "stick"

Under Preferences, Rulers, the following items, when checked, do not retain their checked status after exiting and reopening the program:
"Show guides at object center"
and
"Show guides at object edges"
I have tested this for hours—using different (new) accounts, deleting and reinstalling Pages 5, and purging plist and caches (both user and global)—and have also confirmed the bug with an Apple technician (he has the exact same problem).
This looks like it might be a bona fide bug.
Is anyone else seeing (and can confirm) this behavior?
Thanks!

Thanks for confirming. If a few more people can confirm before I talk with the Apple Senior Analyst tonight at 9:00 p.m. U.S. EST (NYC), it will really help our case here when I report my findings to the guy.
Thanks, all.

  • System Preferences Do Not Stick

System Preferences for adding menu icons do not stick.
Date & Time/Clock: Show the date and time
Displays: Show Displays in menu bar
International/Input menu: Show input menu in menu bar (even when there, it didn't actually work)
Sound: Show volume in menu bar
I check these in System Preferences, but they do NOT appear on the menu bar, and are unchecked after a re-boot. This all started after re-doing a 10.4.11 combo update as was suggested to speed up shutdowns which take several minutes. The re-do of the update just made everything worse. I repaired permissions, ran daily, weekly & monthly scripts in OnyX, reset PRAM, reset open firmware.

    Here's what I'd try,
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then...
You've probably got a few corrupt preference files.
Move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences>com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost>com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist
where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
    Reboot.
This will reset your Menu Bar to the default, you'll need to go through System Preferences to reset the ones you need. (If they are already checked, uncheck them first and then recheck them).

  • Panel preferences do not stick

I set up my workspace layout as I want it but it seems to
never stick for the Library panel and the Tools panel. When I start
up Flash (8 Professional) they are both not visible, and when I
make them visible the Tools is in the right place (upper left) but
the Library panel is in the middle of the screen (it should be in
    the lower left).
Every time I start up Flash I have to set these things up.
Any way for Flash to remember my preferences? I've trashed and
reset the workspace layout a couple times but it still doesn't
    stick.

  • Audio preferences lost - not sticking as on earlier post

I can no longer choose external speakers in audio preferences - it is not there. If I go to audio midi set up I can choose external speakers and restart and everything works fine, but as soon as the iMac wakes from sleep I have lost sound and audio preferences again shows only headphones.

I've tried multiple firewire cables and tried both firewire ports for each and still my audio interface does not show up as a connected sound output device in system preferences. The manufacturer tech I've been speaking with has determined that the drivers are up to date and there is not a problem in that regard.
Could the firewire port itself have gone bad?

  • Some audio preferences settings not sticking

I find that every time I restart my iMac the audio volume is reset to 50% for all outputs no matter what it was set to before the restart. I generally listen to my iMac on headphones, and this default volume is WAY too loud. Also, the MacOS startup chime always plays loudly through the external speakers even though I always leave my headphones plugged in and have headphones designated as the Output Device in my Sound Preferences. I also have a pair of Harmon Kardon USB Soundsticks plugged in, and I don't use the built-in speakers.
So far I've tried deleting the preference files for sound, and zapping the PRAM on restart. No dice. Any other suggestions?

Do you also get a warning that your preferences couldn't be saved because you had a permissions problem with your preferences directory?
If preferences aren't being saved - it is because something is preventing them from being written in the preferences directory. So go fix the permissions issue on your preferences directory.

  • Sound settings not sticking through reboot after 10.6.2

Since 10.6.2, my sound preferences are not sticking and always default to "internal speakers" on my MacPro1,1. I tried running the combo updater without success. Any other ideas?
    Thanks.

  • BUG: "Save As" dialog is not showing

sometimes i have the problem (since CC) that the SAVE AS dialog is not showing.
the window does not show when i select SAVE AS.
SAVE works.. but i often want to save a new version without overwriting the old.
i don´t know why it happens but it seems that BIG files (panoramas or many layers) are affected more often.
    happens 3-5 times a week.
never had this problem with PS prior to CC.
    my system:
    intel I7 2600K
    16 GB ram
    GTX 770 (latest drivers)
240 GB SSD (OS windows 7 64 bit)
120 GB SSD (60GB free for scratch files)
2 TB harddisk (1 TB free for scratch files)

Photoshop should not crash even with big files so apparently there is something wrong.
    yeah obviously...
Have you tried resetting Photoshop's preferences yet? That sometimes cures malfunctions.
i have resetted the preferences yes.
photoshop should not crash i agree.... but as you can read here in this forum it does.
no software is free of bugs.... and i have worked long enough with computers to burry that expectation.

  • Mail preferences not sticking

I access iCloud email via the web when I'm at work (Win XP SP3 + latest release of Chrome).  Recently (as in over the past couple weeks, give or take) my preferences (not showing images in HTML email, default email address for sending, show BCC, etc.) are not sticking permanently.  Sometimes I make/save the changes and they stay for days; other times (like this morning) they don't even stay set for an hour.  My rules are always there, but the other preferences need to be reset periodically -- and seemingly randomly -- to their default values.
I have deleted all cookies, cleared the cache, etc.  I have not tried another browser because (1) it could be days between "resets" and I don't want to have to use another browser for that long just for troubleshooting and (2) I need this to work in Chrome, so whether it works in another browser is more or less moot.  No matter what troubleshooting steps I've taken, the problem recurs unpredictably.  It is very frustrating because I have to keep a constant eye on the "From" address when replying or sending new messages to mailing lists I'm on (which reject messages from the address that iCloud defaults to), plus with the option defaulting to "On" to show images in HTML email, I'm opening myself up to even more spam than usual.
    So two questions:
Is anyone else having this same issue?
Why are these preferences apparently stored in cookies rather than persisting on Apple's server?  Or if they ARE on Apple's server, why do I have to keep changing them back periodically?
    Thanks,
    Brent

As follow-up, just since I posted this message and without reloading the iCloud tab, restarting the browser, or anything like that, the preferences have once again reverted themselves less than an hour after I changed them.

  • Application menu not showing in preference pane

Have brought some games for the iphone and ipod touch but have no application menu not showing in preference pane to upload them to to ipod touch. All software is current both itunes and ipod touch
    Help would be very grateful,

If you go to Preferences, General you should be able to see the "Applications" check box, below "Audiobooks". Check the box, this will show the Applications icon in your library.

  • 10.7.2 Bug, Showing Data DVD as blank, but it's not!

I have a brand new Macbook Pro and I've encountered a baffling problem.  A data DVD (containing multiple PDF's) shows up as a blank writable disc on this computer.  I decided to run Parallels with Windows 7 (on the same MBP) and the disc showed up with all the files intact.  So I figured it wasn't a hardware problem.  Then I tried the same DVD in my older macbook (2008 model) and Mac Pro desktop (both with OS 10.6) and the disc works perfectly.  So it's not a general mac problem either, it appears to be a 10.7 Lion problem.  I then uninstalled Parallels and Toast just incase they were to blame...no luck.  I have tried other data DVD's in my new MBP and they work perfectly, so I tried to figure out what format was messing with Lion.  Using Snow Leopard, Toast & my old Macbook here are my findings regarding the format of the culprit DVD:
    Medium Type: DVD-R
    Space used: 4.38 GB
    Diameter: 120 mm
    Layers: single
    Manufacturer ID: RITEKF1
    Content:
    Title: Feb 22 2011
    Content Type: Data
    File System: UDF
    Tracks: 2
    Sessions: 2
    Details:
    Session 1 Start=0, Size 1.16GB
    Track 1 Start=0, Size 1.16 GB
    UDF  Feb 22 2011
    UDF revision 2.01
    Session 2 (open), Start= 645216, Size = open
    Track 2 Start = 645216, Size = 3.15 GB
    UDF  Feb 22 2011
    UDF revision 2.01
So as you can see it's a multisession DVD, which you cannot create under Lion but you should be able to read it.  It's also UDF format, etc.  Does anything else look fishy?
Anyway, I brought the MBP to the genius bar today and showed him my findings.  I tried the disc in his MBP and it also appeared to be a blank writable DVD. He believes it is a Lion bug and had nothing more to say.  Any thoughts from the techies out there?  Anyone have a similar experience?  I would love to have my results duplicated so that I can make apple aware of this bug.  Thanks all!
    My specs:
MBP 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    OS 10.7.2

    Cattus Thraex,
I know that you enjoy posting on the forums, but please only post relevant information.  If you've read everyones post in this thread you'll notice that the discs in question have all been tested on other operating systems & other hardware, therefore it's not necessary to write "then you may have a hardware problem" or "May also indicate a system corruption".  That's incorrect information and it shows that you have not actually read the other posts before replying.
FYI, I've never actually "called anyone out" in a forum.  I generally think it's a waste of time and it usually solves nothing.  That being said, I started this thread so that we could get a solution from Apple and I'd like for it not to be diluted by misinformation.  Please help us Apple!
Your last post is really what made me write this reply.  Your basically saying that our concerns are useless because this technology is antiquated.  That we should not be asking a question like this at all...
Let me break this down for you so you understand where we're coming from...
You wrote "Open Session Disks have always been problematic in Mac OS, and not recommented. Open sessions made sense 10-12 years ago, when rw-CDs did not exist, and a blank CD cost a lot "
Thanks for the info, but all of us in this thread have been given a disc by a friend of or a colleague that we cannot open on Lion, but it opens everywhere else.  We did not choose this format, but apparently someone else did and we must deal with it.  We all know that the technology is old...this is not helpful info.
you also wrote "Now, open sessions are entirely senseless, and I do not wonder if Apple completely drops support for this outdated method."
O.K., that again for the non-advice.  Again we didn't choose the format, someone else did.  So basically you're saying that we are silly for asking this question.  Are you still able to open a microsoft word file from 1993?  The answer is yes...
Anyway, from the information I've gathered from your posts above, you will not thoroughly read this post either.  I fully expect an angry response that has not been well though out, due to the lack of comprehension of what I'm saying here.  That being said, please suprise me by posting nothing at all...that would be spectacular!

  • PSE 9 Preferences:Saving Files will not stick

MacOSX 10.6, Photoshop Elements 9 - I have tried (lots of times) to set the Append File Extension: preference to Always and to check Use Lower Case. It will not stick. The next time I go into Preferences it is back to Never and the check box is unchecked. My other preference changes all seem to be saved correctly. Why does this one not save?

Let me start this with....in OS 9.2.2 I am able to delete files that are not needed from the system folder. For some odd reason when I try this in 10.3.9 it murders my system...needless to say I have printer extensions, scanner estensions, modem stuff and other not needed things living in there.
Recently I did nothing like that but also had to forcequit a program to only find that everything I opened ...might open once then it would tell me that there was an error---spit the number out---and the program would not open.
I had to do an install/archive then update to 10.3.9 again in order to gain the use of my computer and programs.
You may need to do the same thing...it is llike the cleam install of OS 9, where it replaces the system folder and stores your things into a "safe folder" to return when done. Some items may need to be manually moved and lke my printer/scanner, it needed to be reinstalled.
Insert the install cd and boot to it. Use the disk utility to repair the hd (go under the file menu I think), then choose the install and archive option (click the option button to find it). See if that helps.

  • Energy saver settings do not stick when set in system preferences

For some reason when I restore the default settings for the energy saver settings, the settings go back to a custom setting I set months prior of Display Sleep at 1 minute.
Here is what I am doing:
    Going to "System Preferences"
    Going to "Energy Saver"
    Pressing the button "Restore Defaults"
Everything goes back to the default settings of Computer Sleep of 10 minutes and Display Sleep of 10 minutes and I close the window out.
Problem happens: A bit later I come back to my iMac and wake it up, the setting is back to 1 minute of Display Sleep (which I did months ago, I no longer want that).
I have even locked the setting to prevent further changes. Which locks the settings in place like it should I believe. However, once the iMac sleeps and I wake it up in a couple of hours it switches back to the old setting I made months ago, 1 minute of Display Sleep, which I no longer want.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

i have the opposite problem... i would like to use custom Energy Saver settings but they will not "stick." instead they keep returning to the default settings. i followed the advice on this thread, thinking it might solve my problem too. but it did not. any suggestions?
i had one hunch - that it might have something to do with the file of same name but with ~orig at the end (see image below). should i remove the other file as well?
    thanks!

  • Odd bug: "keyboard and mouse" within "system preferences" will not open!!

After having to Archive and Re-Install yesterday and installing "X11", I have an odd problem:
    - apple+i leads to crashing and restart of "Finder"
    - when investigating this I found the "keyboard and mouse" registry in "system preferences" will not open.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Is there any other remedy short of another Archive and Re-Install?
In the system library I have "Keyboard.prefPane" version 3.13. Clicking on it opens a blank "system preferences" page entitled "keyboard and mouse".
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
