BUG TEST: Duplicate Stacks in Custom-Sorted Albums?

Before I submit this as an official bug report (through both the ADC site and the regular Feedback page), I’d be grateful to anyone who could take the time to try and replicate this strange behavior.
(I’ve been able to reproduce it on machines in two different Apple Stores, but I’d like to see if it’s as easy to reproduce on other people’s home systems as well.)
Here are the steps which seem to consistently work (i.e. which cause the problem) on my Mac Pro (running the latest version of Aperture under OS X 10.5.6):
1) Create a new Album (from any arbitrary selection of a few pics from any Project); the Album can be at any level in the Inspector’s Projects pane, either within a particular Project or off in a separate Folder;
2) Give that Album a name (don’t just leave as the default “Untitled”);
3) View the Album’s contents in “Browser Only” mode, so you can see all its thumbs (this step isn’t necessary; it just makes what’s about to happen easier to see);
4) The Album’s sorting order (the pull down list in the upper left) should be at the default setting of “Image Date”; change this option to “Custom” by dragging a few of the thumbs around to different positions. This step is critical.
5) Now that your Album’s initial contents have been moved around to create a Custom sort order, make some selections of images from other Projects and add them to the new Album by dragging the selection onto the new Album’s name in the Inspector’s Projects pane...
BUT FIRST... make sure these new selections include Stacks, and aren’t just single images only.
If you’ve done all of the above steps -- and it may take a couple of tries -- re-select the new Album in the Inspector and see if there are MULTIPLE COPIES of the Stacks which just got dragged into it. There may be two copies of each Stack, or sometimes even more. And if there are copies, you won’t be able to simply delete the extra ones from the Album. The only two options you have (short of an Undo) are:
a) Change the Album’s sort order to something other than “Custom” (which only helps until you switch it back to Custom again); or
b) Un-Stack then re-select and Re-Stack each unique Stack which now appears two or more times;
...neither of which is a particularly acceptable workaround.
If even just a couple of users can replicate this bug, I’ll at least know it isn’t just a bizarre coincidence between me and two separate Apple Stores when I write it up and submit it. Or if this is an already acknowledged and well-reported bug, please let me know that as well!
Many thanks,
John Bertram

I'm afraid I have an additional twist. In addition to multiple stack (sometimes 5-6 extras) I have "blanks": dotted rectangles. These have no thumbs, and the thumbs won't re-build. Oddly, if I click on the blank, dotted rectangle, a preview does appear after several seconds of a blank gray screen. The files are managed, and if I search "show in finder," they files are found. But there seems to be no way to make the thumbs appear.
I have tried changing the sort order from "custom," but it doesn't affect the blanks.
I've copied these stacks to a new project, and (I think) isolated the problem, but there are 800 of them and I don't relish re-importing them all.
I have wasted days on this problem over the past months, and am very unhappy with this "professional" application.

  • Maintaining custom sort order when copying between albums

Is there any way that you folks have discovered to maintain the custom sort order of the images in an album when copying these images into a another album? Duping the album is not an answer, as I need to collate the contents of a number of albums into one.
I tried selecting the contents of the album that I had just done the custom sorting in, and making it into one big stack, to try to move that to keep the order. Aperture informed me that stacking only works on images from one project.
OK, since I now know this fact about stacking, is there any good way to merge projects? I have a ton of work on the images in the individual projects, and don't want to redo anything.
Anyway, hope you get the problem, any help will be appreciated.

  • Custom sort wierdness

I have an album that contains 57 stacks of images. I have been trying to manually drag the images into a 'custom sort' order while in grid view. When I try to drag a stack into either the bottom position or the next to the bottom last position the stack jumps to the second position from the top.
I can drag images into other locations, just not the last or next to last position. Is anyone seeing this behavior?

I've had this very problem. I took my dual 1.8 G5 to the "Studio" at the Apple store in San Francisco and they could not understand the behavior. So far only one album exhibits the behavior you describe. I've had to take a rest from working with this album (300 NEF files) because there have been so many sorting problems that I can't get the album in order.

  • Sort Albums - Cannot Undo

When you right click on your albums in iPhoto, it is possible to sort them alphanumerically. I just tested this out. However, having already organized my albums in a particular order, I wanted to go back to the order they had been in previously. It's not possible to "undo" the Sort Albums command. This seems like a bug to me. When I clicked on Sort Albums, I thought there would be a dialog box or something to let me define how I wanted to sort the albums. There was nothing like that, it just sorted them and I can't go back.

You are correct - the only way to get them back is to manually resort them to the order you want

  • Custom Sort of Duplicated row walues in Webi based on SAP BW Universe

It is a duplicate thread i have already posted in Integration kits - SAP section.
This is regarding custom sorting of row value which are duplicated in Webi which is based on SAP BW Universe.
I have created Webi Report based on Characteristic structure. Using Alerter I provide some space for child node to notify it as child node below a parent node.
Please see a sample table below:
    AAAA
    onpeak
    midpeak
    offpeak
    BBBB
    onpeak
    midpeak
    offpeak.
If I enable Avoid duplicate row aggregation, i will be able to see duplicate rows for "onpeak" etc. Since Webi does a default sorting, I have to make a custom sort to replicate the structure followed. And in custom sort i dont see duplicated rows, and i see only one "onpeak". Accordingly if I try to sort using custom sort, then the result will be
    AAAA
    onpeak
    onpeak
    midpeak
    midpeak
    offpeak
    offpeak
    BBBB.
Please let me know if anyone has any solution for this.
I have already created report with modifying the row names in backend by adding letter before its value for example "1offpeak" for the duplicated row and then removing the letter "1" in webi using substring. But i know this is the crude way of doing it.

I have changed the naming convention in BI structure by introducing a white space before the name to avoid duplication and used it in report. Not a good solution anyway.

  • Sort Albums Doesn't Work

I have a bunch of albums in iPhoto that I am trying to sort, and it just doesn't work.
When I select them, right-click, and choose "Sort Albums" from the context menu, either *nothing* happens, or else the order of the albums is altered in some seemingly random way but the results are not alphabetical order.
I don't see how the program could somehow not understand "alphabetical" so there must be something keeping it from actually doing the sort.  Anybody have any clues?

When there is a selection, if "Sort Albums" will do nothing then the option should be greyed out.  Otherwise, it should sort those items which are selected.  Doing nothing and giving the user no feedback is not acceptible.
You are right, that is confusing.  It is either a bug or a poor design.
You may want to send feedback to Apple - use the form: Apple - Aperture - Feedback

  • Webi 4.0 Custom Sort for SSAS Hierarchy

    Hi,
I'm using SSAS cube as a source for my webi report .Some report need custom sorting for hierarchy object , we are not able to apply sorting correctly in webi.
What do i need to do in order to apply the custom sorting for hierarchy object?  Thanks.

Hi, I've written a post on this:
    http://blog.davidg.com.au/2011/09/dynamic-measures-in-webi-on-any-data.html
...and a few people in the comments seemed to have the same problem as you, which seems to be a bug (clicking the ellipsis does not launch the custom values screen).
Perhaps you could try the solution offered by Gallin, which was to create a second input control, then retry the steps to create another input control and click the ellipsis to enter custom values.
    Hope that helps.

  • "Sort Albums" not working in Iphoto 11

I see a lot of discussions about not being able to sort albums manually. I have not problem with that. When I control click on the name of the album, and hit "sort albums" noting happens. This used to work. I do not want to manually sort, since I have a ton of albums. HELP

I'm able to sort albums both way, inside folders and those out of folders. The feature exists.  As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos, create a number of albums and albums in a folder and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?  I'm running iPhoto 9.4.3 on 10.8.4.

  • Custom sort in Project problem

    Hello,
I have a project of old family photo scans that I have custom sorted chronologically and on occasion the images will change from the order that I have them sorted. Any thoughts?
    Thanks - Scrags

Personally the only times that I have seen something like this is:
One - inside smart albums with a custom sort order and then only on occasions when the content of the smart album changed dramatically.
Two - some sort of project/album corruption.
Try this - make a new album inside a new project and drag the images into it (the album not the project, so they don't actually move to the new project) custom sort the images in the album, not the project and see what happens over the course of your normal workflow)

(ios5 ipad bugs)I can't get changes of album art, artist, album and other tags to show up in the iPad music player, but they show up correctly in the iTunes device view. Certain random songs do not sync correctly.   Wifi sync hasn't worked yet.
I mostly use technology for education and professional audiovisuals and lights.
I don't sync  music because I use music from at least 4 different computers. (manually mange music)
I use my iPad to play performance tracks for church and a local gospel group out of our church, Won4Christ.
I chose to buy the iPad because the laptop of one of the group members (dellxps running iTunes) was randomly losing and mixing up music and I wanted a more stable option that was bigger than my iPod touch.
I tried to add some data to music libraries that I previously added to my iPad, but the data only shows up when looking at the device in iTunes.
Wifi sync has not worked on either my laptop or desktop ( both running windows 7 enterprise 64 and newest iTunes) not really a big issue, but very annoying
When browsing through library playlist albums on the iPad, random artwork shows up on playlists with no artwork that you touch while dragging, and it does not go away until you change to another navigation tab and back.
Random songs out of hundreds that I added showed up in iTunes grayed out with a sync circle beside them.  Those songs would play back okay on the iPad but were unplayable through the iTunes device view.  I had to delete the songs manually through the library along with the playlist and add them again.
These seem to be major stability bugs in the "new" music app and iTunes.  My only option right now seems to be to delete the songs that I want to change and re-add them with the changes already applied rather than changing the id3 tags and artwork on the existing music. I hope apple will release updates to resolve these issues.
Thank you for actually making it to the end of this manuscript of annoyances.

Just wondered if anyone had any other suggestions.

Did you figure this out? Am having the same problem.

Changed to column view, and could not find the artist at all in any of the sub categories.

  • How can I make a smart playlist sort album by artist in order of size?

I'm trying to figure out a way to make a playlist of songs I generally like from a very large library to fit on my iPod. The songs aren't rated, and I don't want to have a totally random selection chosen by a smart playlist.
I thought a good way to pare down the list would be to sort album by artist, and then filter that list in order of the size that each artist takes up. It's more important to get rid of an artist that I don't like that also hogs a lot of space than one that maybe only has one track. I figure if I could scan down the list and exclude the worst offenders, it conceivably would make the task much simpler.

    I usually make two playlists.
One playlist with favorites I do want on the iPod and another smart playlist to fill the rest of the iPod. Just limit the size to th esize of the iPod minus wthe size of my iPod selection playlist.

  • How to put a single stack item to an album?

Maybe a silly question, but I can't find out how to put a single item from a stack into an album. When I drag a stacked item to an album, the entire stack appears in the album. This is not what I want, I want to get the single item in the album.
I know I can make a single stacked item in an album to be the albumpick. But this is not enough. Sometimes I need to put two items from the same stack into this album.

Would this be as designed, and so a wrong use of stacks by me?
It is as designed but I don't think what you want to do is a particularly wrong use of stacks. I can see using stacks as a way to reduce clutter in the browser but still wanting to be able to get to individual images in the stack to use..
What is interesting is the wording in the Aperture users guide concerning stacks:
    Dragging Stacks
You can drag an entire stack to a new location, *and you can drag specific images within a stack to a new location*. When a stack is closed, dragging the stack moves the entire stack. *When a stack is open, you can drag individual images to new locations in the Browser*. You can also drag images into a stack. If you drag an image within a stack into a different project, however, the entire stack moves to the new location.
    (emphasis added)
So the first part sounds like you should be able to drag an image out of the stack to an album, the second just mentions dragging an image out of the stack in the browser.
And in way you can do this, the only thing is what you end up doing is unstacking the image you drag out. Not exactly what you would want to do.
I think it should be OK to place individual stack items into albums and have them remain in the stack. Any reason this would be a bad idea?

  • Can I put only the top image of a stack in a Mobile Album?

I have an album that contains stacks and I would like to put only the top images of these stacks in a Mobile Album.  Is this possible?
I have tried to make a new album and only put the top images in this new album without sucess.  Is it possible to have a stack of images in one album and only the top image in another ablum?
I hope someone knows about this

    Hi Surendra,
My target is to find a convenient way to transfer my best photos only to my iPad
By using stacks for similar photo and putting my best shot on top I reduce the number of images displayed in the organizer.  A typical stack contains of 8 shots.
Then I put my best stacks in an album.  By using the Slide Show in PE I have a convenient way to display only my best shot and tha's OK for my computer were I have a lot of disc space.
But on my iPad the size of memory is limited and it also takes some time to transfer a huge number of images so now I want to find a convenient way of tranfering only the top image of each stack. If I could have a separate album containing only the top images from each stack the task would have been easy.
Now this is not possible so now I hope there is another solution than acually making a separate copy (a new file) of each top image and put these copies in a separate album.   This will of course work but it will end up in having two identical images showing up in the organizer and so I do not really like this idea.
I hope I have managed to describe my intention and do you have an idea for a workaround or do I need to make separate copies?
    Thanks a lot
    Hans

  • How can I sort albums by album artist while keeping compilations together?

Argh, I'm getting a bit exasperated. Basically I just want to be able to scroll through cover flow and see all my albums with one cover representing each album, with all the compilations near the end under "V" for various. Surely most people would want to scroll through their albums in this way??
So I've gone through and added all the album artist info, which has worked fine for the artist albums. But for all the "Various" ones, instead of doing the logical thing and grouping them together by album, iTunes orders these all by track artist. There doesn't seem to be any secondary sort function..
I'm always defending Mac and Apple products for their logical applications and ease of use, and now I feel let down.. If there's a way around this please let me know! Thanks,
    Malinna

The trouble you're encountering is that iTunes sorts first by Album Artist, then by Artist. Thus, within each Album Artist, you'll get multiple Artist clumps.
You want to sort "Album by Artist". This will, first, strip out all your compilations and sort them to the end of your library, then sort using the hierarchy Album Artist (or Artist if there is none) > Album > Disc # > Track #. Click the Album column header until Album by Artist is displayed. (You can also choose Album by Year, which will sort albums chronologically within Album Artist.)
If you want to keep albums together, you'll need to sort on an Album column; other columns are bound to clump things by whatever you're sorting on.
