Bug that allows match to use cellular data even when turned off in settings?

Earlier today, I mysteriously incurred overage charges on my phone bill because 200MB of data was used while I was on my bicycle. My phone was in my bag. Before I left, I had tried to download an album to my phone from iTunes match cloud storage. It would not download, so I left. Cellular data was turned off in iTunes match settings. Has anyone encountered Match overriding that setting? All cellular data settings for the app store were off and I was not running any GPS function.

I have the exact same problem!
I'm using the iPhone 5 now under Carrier M1 Singapore 13.0 and I have noted that over a period of 2 weeks, my cellular data usage has been about 2.7GB on an average. Since I know my bill has been capped at 3GB, I have since switched off my cellular data.
However, when I switched it on for a few days after using it for awhile, my cellular usage jumped by 1.2GB in just 1 day! And I used it as I would on an average day (like during an average day in the 2 weeks)!
I understand that there have been reports of a bug that have caused this problem in the US.

But I'm hoping that there's a solution for those living in Singapore? Do I seek the help from my carrier as well? But if it's a problem with the phone, then my carrier definitely would not help, right?

  • My iphone 5 uses cellular data even when in WIFI mode.  I have an iPhone 3 and 4s and both of those appear to be OK.  How do I stop this?

My iPhone 5 on iOS 6 uses 4x to 5x the data that was being used on my iPhone 4s.  The old 4s and 3g (differnt numbers) seem to be OK.  AT&T is getting rich off of the cellular data when in WIFI mode.  How do I stop this?

    Hello there MyAppleHasAWorm,
I was researching what might be causing the excessive data usage on the iPhone 5 and found some info that should help reign in the data. It is from our iPhone Troubleshooting Assistant found here http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/phone/#section_1
Here is section 1 to get you started. I recommend sections 1, 3, and 5 if needed.
    Restart iPhone
To restart iPhone, first turn iPhone off by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iPhone will turn off after a few moments.
Next, turn iPhone on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Is iPhone not responding? To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If your device does not turn on or displays a red battery icon, try recharging next
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • ITunes Match Gobbling Up Cellular Data (even though disabled)

I've found a few previous threads that reference this problem, but it's pretty horrific especially now LTE is in the picture.
Despite setting the "Use Cellular Data" option to OFF (verified in both Music and iTunes settings), if you select music to be downloaded (i.e. click the cloud icon), iTunes grabs the music regardless of whether you are on WiFi or Cellular.
Scenario 1: I get a new iPhone5 and want to sync my existing music library to it. I have a playlist with all 2500 songs in it, so I go there and hit the cloud icon so all my music copies over. There's no way to pause the whole process - only individual songs - and no way to stop it using cellular data, so when I leave the house, my phone starts eating up my cellular data plan (2.5GB in 3 days, when most of my time was spent at home). I detailed this on my blog - http://lamejournal.com/2012/09/24/itunes-match-uses-cellular-data-even-when-you- say-no/
Still, it shouldn't be so bad, because I spent most of my time at home. Right?
Scenario 2: Your brand new iPhone 5 has problems staying connected to WiFi (see the many threads on this issue). What happens when it has problems with WiFi and drops off the network? Yup, you got it, it uses LTE instead. So while I'm sitting in my house, 10 feet away from a 802.11n access point, supposedly 'safely' downloading my music over my home Internet connection, my phone randomly decides it doesn't want to play with WiFi after all, and continues downloading on cellular instead. Isn't that great?
This is ridiculous. The option "Use Cellular Data" should do exactly what it says - when turned OFF, iTunes should not be downloading iTunes Match data from the cloud over cellular. I have 20Gig of music to download, and thank goodness I caught it when I did before being hit with enormous overages.
Hopefully this is just a bug and can be fixed easily and quickly by Apple.
    Thank you!

I too queued up a handful of albums to download this morning, took a shower, walked the dog... and by the time I got to work, a text from VZW tells me I've used 50% of my (2GB) data for the month (2 days into billing cycle).  This is on a 4S with iOS6, with FiOS and Airport Express at home, so it should have finished the 750mb or so in the alloted 45 minutes, but the screen went dark, so iPhone took a nap instead of doing her job.
This is bonkers for several reasons:
    1. If you queue several iCloud downloads, from within the Music app, there is no visible queue for the pending downloads. You have to go back into the artist/album to see the progress on each song OR enter the iTunes app to check the pending downloads.  WHAT? my queue is in ANOTHER app?*
    2. Queued downloads continue when the app is "killed" from the task switcher.  I guess this is a feature, but there is NO indication of a data connection in use.
    3. If the iPhone screen goes dark to sleep, it turns off wifi to save battery and any queued downloads stop.  They will resume, over any available data connection, regardless of user selected settings. This is true for partially downloaded songs and queued songs. If I wanted to use cellular to download, I would enable that setting.
    4. Podcasts, while a different app from music, uses the same data storage and download queueing.  So if you have pending downloads that you can't see the progress of, you may wonder why podcasts aren't updating.
    5. In music.app, if you have "show all music" set to on, there is no indication if an artist/album is available locally or in iCloud.  You have to browse into the tree to see the track names greyed out.  Or else you can toggle "show all music" in settings.  Why can't there be a toggle within music.app, or an iCloud/local tab?  While I'm ranting about Music app, PLEASE can we have a sort by Artist/Album/YEAR option like in iTunes on mac?

I'm not sure of what to do. It's quite frustrating, and all I need is advice, and help. I would much appreciate it. Thank-you.

In order to download to your phone over the air, you need to be connected to WiFi.
It's possible the Internet connection through Verizon is not stable enough for the downlaod to begin (it is a very large download).
You might want to head over to Starbucks with your laptop for the afternoon and see if you can download it over their WiFi.

when you double tap the home button to go back to your other apps are those apps always running and using cellular data even if I am not currently using them?  I thought it froze them and didn't use data other that a select few apps like Facebook, email, etc.  Also I always select no when I download an app and it wants me to have those push notifications.  Because that would mean that I would have to delete my apps after everytime I just them from that bar and that would be very annoying and just stupid.  Or maybe apps do use data and it's just a big scheme to make everyone go over on their data plans.

Yes I have turned imessage off a number of times and that does not seem to he doing the trick, and it is not delivering them then I have to press on the photo and either chose try again or send as text message, I have had the setting on to not allow sending pictures as texts (so they can only send as imessage) since I got my phone in January and it has always worked until now, I have turned that off to allow me to send them as picture messages now but it's still not working over iMessage, I have also tried it using 3G and not wifi

  • On my iPhone 4 when trying to listen to a podcast it asks if I want to use cellular data even though it shows the podcast as downloaded.  How do I fix this?

On my iPhone 4 when I want to listen to a podcast that appears to be downloaded the phone asks if I woul dlike to temporarily turn on Cellular Data in order to play back the streaming episode.
What do I do to get rid of this message?
    thanks,

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.
If you have been through ALL of the troubleshooting steps and you're still having problems, then you'll need to bring your phone to Apple for investigation.

  • Z3 Compact using mobile data even when disabled.

    Hey there,
my new z3 compact is connecting to the mobile internet every 3 hours and causing costs! Mobile data is disabled in the setting and in the quick menu. WIFI is available all the time. In the settings it shows 0MB of volume for all apps. Besides the preinstalled apps and widgets I use only some apps wich are well known and can be trusted.
Now how can I see wich app/widget is connecting? And who pays my bills?? It seems I cannot trust my device and I dont like that idea.
Any advice? The Support didnt help much - told me to reset and wait for the next bill to see if it worked...

If you can't access some live statistics from your mobile operator at least you can try this.
Go into Settings / Power / Battery Usage.
There will be a graph showing battery discharge ratio and list of all apps using power below.
When you click on the app (yes, I know it will be annoying) for some of them there will be "Mobile data sent" and "Mobile data received".
For example in my phone under "Android OS" I have -
CPU total 1 hour 1 minute
    CPU main - 16 seconds
    Keep active - 9m 59s
    Data received - 6,34kB
    Data sent - 14,14 kB
    Wifi received - 484 bytes
    Wifi sent - 531 bytes.
Check every single app on the list. Maybe you will find it there. I suspect Google Play Services. Someone on the forum mentioned that they ignore disabling auto update. Maybe Google messed something with disabling mobile transmission?
There is a one, very hard way to disable accessing mobile network data if you don't need that.
Head over to Settings / More / Cellular Networks / Access points name (APNs).
There will be APN for your data transfers and for MMS. Leave MMS alone but delete data APN. You will be able to configure it again manually but as long as there will be no APN for data transmission your phone will not be able to connect to your operator and cause costs.

    Thank you.

    Hi crcalnan,
There should be an entry in that section for iTunes, which includes both the iTunes Store and iTunes Match:
Set when cellular data is used for apps and services. Go to Settings > Cellular, then turn cellular data on or off for any app that can use cellular data. If a setting is off, iPhone will use only Wi-Fi for that service. The iTunes settings include both iTunes Match and automatic downloads from the iTunes Store and the App Store.

  • Iphone 5 - "use cellular data for" option only shows Facetime and Passbook

I have an iphone 5 and I am trying to manage my cellular data usage,
When I go into Settings - Cellular and I look at the "use cellular data for" option, there are only 2 apps on the list Facetime and Passbook.
I have seen other posts online that show a long list of apps that you can toggle Cellular data on and off.
How can I see a longer list of apps.

In Settings/General/Restrictions if you tap on Cellular Data Use there should be 2 options: Allow Changes or Don't Allow Changes. If you don't see these options is that where you see "Cellular data is turned off for 'Setting'?
Do you have a corporate MS Exchange email account on your phone? If so your administrator may have added an override on this setting.

  • "Use cellular data for" is only showing a few apps

    Hello,
I just got a new 5S.  I have installed and used maybe 15 or so apps, but when I go to
Settings -> Cellular -> "Use cellular data for"
it only shows 5 apps: Calendar, FaceTime, Find iPhone, Passbook, & Skype.
I would like to see all the apps so that I can control what is using cellular data.  When I read other posts online, it seems like this should show all apps.  Does anybody have any idea why I only see a few apps here or what I can do to display all apps?
    Thanks for any help!

  • IPhone 4S uses 3G data even with WiFi network available

I've been trying to figure out why the iPhone still uses 3G data even when it has a WiFi network available. It's usually just a few MBs per day, and as such - I attributed to niotifications, location services, etc.
But today, I got a really nasty surprise...
As I woke up, my iPhone showed the WiFi indicator as usual, but internet was slow... as if it was using cellular data. Something i quickly confirmed by trying to access  stuff on my internal LAN and not being able to.
Worst of all, my iPhone went through over 600MB of cellular data overnight - that's my entire data limit for a month! - meaning I'll have to pay for neary 400MB of excess data usage paid at overly inflated prices (I'll be paying nearly 3x my monthly bill just for the excess data!!!)
As if all the bugs I've been facing weren't enough: Invalid SIM, showing full strength 3G signal when it's actually "offline"... Now I have to face stupidly wasted mobile data when I'm at home within WiFi range?
I've been an iPhone use for years, and have upgraded every year to the new models... but this iPhone 4S has been my worst experience ever with a mobile device, and ruined all the trust I had in Apple devices...
I sincerely don't know what to do next... if I'll still wait for a 5.1 update that may/may not fix all the issues I (and thousands others, as seen by the discussions here) have been having... or if I cut my losses and try my luck elsewhere...
Tired of serving as a guinea pig and doing all this debug work for Apple...

The WiFi data is recorded separately - and the mobile data use was verified using the operator "reporting" service (and later sending me the warning SMS of the data use).
The iPhone was in the home screen, locked, and "sleeping" when the data was used, so the only option would be the iCloud backup - which, in any case, should never ever use the 3G data (and never has until today).
If the WiFi was not working, then it should either: not have internet access; not show the WiFi connected signal in the status bar. As it was, it was showing WiFi access, but using the mobile data just the same.
Which, from what I understand, could have "tricked" iCloud into doing its regular backup thinking it was over WiFi... but in reality doing it over cellular data.

  • Use cellular data for iTunes Match & Radio but not app Updates

Is there any way to set an iOS device so that it will allow using cellular data for iTunes Match and iTunes Radio but not downloading app Updates. I want to be able to set my wife's phone so that the apps are automatically updated over Wifi but she can then use iTunes Match and iTunes Radio when she is out. She only uses those in limited capacity so I am not too worried about her using up her data plan with those. However, app Downloads seems to be quite large, and they happened a lot recently when they all updated for iOS8.
    Thanks,
    Tony

No, but you could turn off Updates under Automatic Downloads in Settings>iTunes & App Store, then update them manually when you're connected to wifi.

I just got iTunes Match and would like to know if downloading my songs from the cloud uses cellular data if I am not able to use wifi?

    Hi,
Yes, it will use cellular data. If you know that you are going to out of wifi range, you can predownload some music whilst you have a wifi connection.
