Buggy File sharing on osx mavericks

When sharing a folder on my mac-mini for windows and mac computers the following happens.
- The mac-mini freezes sometimes, i think from a 100% cpu on the smbd.
-  i cannot acces my share settings until i stop smbd from the activity monitor.
- All window machines lose mounted connecting, and sometimes the macs to.
I've tried the following.
-  i first upgraded to osx 10.9 server, then i was amazed for the first time with this  .... Connection.
- then 2 clean installs of 10.9 server, still buggy
- then tried to keep the lines open with "cammodule" tip with the forced smb1 setting, still buggy
- then a clean install of 10.9 without the osx server app, still buggy
- then once again with forced smb1, still buggy.
Nothing seems to keep the lines open, and i am trying for a week now.
A lot of my co-workers need constant acces to this folder on the mac-mini.
It has been working for 2 years 24/7 without any problem,..... Until last week.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards

I too am having this issue...
I have run a mac NAS file share for years now with no issues and after upgrading to mavericks the mapped network drives on all of the machines (PC and Mac) will loose accessibility to the share.  The server hardware or software on the Mac(mini) does not freeze and shows all users still connected to the share point with no idle time, however, activity on the external drive has ceased.
I have also tried forcing smb1 with no progress.
Rebooting solves the problem which usually occurs every 20-24 hours and has already resulted in corruption of files for my workers accessing the share point.  I understand many people are aware of the buggy shares concerning OS X Mavericks and I have seen several articles stating the issue will most like be addressed in the 10.9.1 update, but does that mean we have to just wait it out?  I would roll back to the former OS, but I have noticed that the smb2 protocol works (WHEN IT WORKS) better with the PC's on the network, and there are only 2 macs on my network, so i would like to contiue using 10.9.

  • Command to Start/Stop "Windows File Sharing" on OsX Tiger Client

    Dear Mac Gurus:
How to use command to start/stop “Windows File Sharing” on OSX Tiger client?
    Thanks!
    Max

    Hi Max,
Windows file sharing requires two daemons, nmbd and smbd. They can be started/stopped as follows:
To start (type the following all in a single line):
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/nmbd.plist /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/smbd.plist
    To stop:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/nmbd.plist /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/smbd.plist
The option "-w" indicates that the default setting (whether start them at boot time or not) is also modified (the same effect as you turn them on/off via System Preferences -> Sharing). This means, if you start them and shutdown your Mac without stopping them, then they will be automatically restarted next time you reboot the Mac.
If you use "load -F" instead of "laod -w", then they are started but the default setting is not modified (if it is off then remains off).
If you use "unload" instead of "unload -w", then they are stopped the default setting is not modified (if it is on then remains on and will be started at next reboot).
If you feel the commands are too long to type, then you can devide them into two commands, for example:
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/nmbd.plist
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/smbd.plist
See launchctl man page for more detail.

  • How is the best way to backup and organize Adobe layered .PSD files on iMac OSX maverick?

How is the best way to organize and backup Adobe layered PSD files on iMac desktop OSX maverick?
I lost all my Adobe Photoshop files + everything else on my IMAC when it crashed. They reinstalled Operating System.  But now i must install programs such as MS Word & Adobe indesign suite.
Please help me determine what is the bestway to backup Adobe layered  PSD files? I believe these are my choices to be assured this doesn't ever hapen again. Please comment.
Buy Apple Airport Time capsule $280.  But I am not sure if it can store PSD layers. Can it or do you have to have Apple Apperture  software to act be sure layers are saved
I had had trouble getting Adobe Cloud to sync to save files and so just trusted my computer to not ever crash.  Any hints on this procedure
Are there any hints on PhotoShop image organization for a current IMac usser ?
    Please help.

My backup plan is to use Time Machine to make a backup to an external disk drive plus I also do a clone of my system disk. So far between the bootable clone and the Time Machine backup this plan has covered all of my needs.

  • How to delete pages in a pdf file with mac OSX Mavericks?

Indeed i don't have Pages options in my tools window... Is that normal for the mac version? Please it's urgent...

Sorry, it was my fault. When I searched on the Internet, I was reading the Acrobat help pages, without knowing it, because in my research I wrote "how to delete pages in a pdf file with Adobe reader", i was just automatically redirected toward Acrobat help but i didn't notice.
So no incorrect information exist in the Reader Help pages.

  • OS X Server not saving my File Sharing settings

    Hi there,
Hoping there is someone out there who can help as there are a few head scratching issues going on!
Basically the main issue I am getting is to do with File Sharing in OSX Server.
I have two raid servers set up with a mac mini server acting as the link to the main network. I use GlobalSan Xtarget to mount the Raids.
I have set up OSX Server primarily so that I can use the VPN function on the Mac Mini, otherwise it is a very simple set up. However, when I attempt to change the settings of my second raid, (As Displayed) clicking ok doesn't save the settings or infact close the window, it just does nothing, with no warning errors as to the reason why. What I am trying to do is remove allow guess users access to this share.
Now your probably thinking why don't I just remove the opportunity for a guest to log into the server, while yes this will work, it's just that I am getting other issues that I am wondering is linked to what is happening In OSX Server.
For instance, I have a Capture One Catalog archive which is supposed to link to a selected folder on my raids. One is for my commercial work, and one for personal. I have a raid for Commercial Work which works completely fine (All the images display and import into the catalog), and a raid for Personal Work (The raid with the file share issues in Server). When attempting to import the images from the Personal Raid, it doesn't recognise them, it knows they are there, but it doesn't recognise it as an image file. However, you can view them fine in Finder.
I thought it was maybe a Sharing and Permisions issue, so I matched the settings from the Commercial Raid with no success. So I am wondering if it is to do with this issue I am having In OSX Server.
To add to these points, I am also getting an Unknown User showing in the User list for the Commercial Raid, not that it seems to be causing a problem, but it is another thing thats happened since migrating the server from 10.8 to 10.9.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advanced.
    Aaron

Ok so I've solved the Capture One Issue, it was due to the / in the Personal/Moving name of the Raid, so that is all fine.
But if anyone does know why server won't save the File Sharing issues, and the issues with the Unknown User, it will still be a great help!
    Many thanks,
    Aaron

  • Server File Sharing unstable on mac and windows network on Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0

Since I've updated our mac mini server from Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X to Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0  we are having sharing issues with Windows (7 and 8) and OSX Mavericks users, not being able to access files on the mac mini server.
What I've notice is that OSX Serer 3.0 stop working and I have to restart the Mac Mini Server to make things start working again.
This was not happening with Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X.
On the Windows and OSX users what happen is the computers keep trying to connect to the server and are not being able to open or copy files. Again this is intermittent, and I suspect it might be a OSX Server bug.
Any one having the same problem or can give us and advice would be great help.
    Thanks.
    Andre Tenenbaum

I too am having this exact problem as well as a few of my network administrator contacts that have gone through the Mavericks / Server 3 upgrade.
It may be worth noting that before the upgrade I had run a mac mini server (core 2 duo) that never had any unintentional downtime, and the current mac server had never gone down or lost connection so I know it has nothing to do with user or network configuration.
    NAS server hardware:
    - Mac Mini core i5
    - 16 GiB ram
    -  Promise Pegasus Raid5 external drive (thunderbolt)
I am NOT running time machine as the backup.
Everyting posted above is occuring although the rate at which my users lose acces is sporadic.  Sometimes the server will stay up 24-36 hours and sometimes it will only stay up for around 4.  Every user, every group loses acces AT THE EXACT SAME TIME EVERYTIME to EVERY SHAREPOINT...all of my local users as well as my remote users.  All of my users are on Windows machines (mostly win7, but a couple of XP and 8 users as well).  The share is accessed via a mapped drive using the format x.x.x.x/share and I have had 0 issues with getting users connected.  The problem is 100% keeping them connected.  When the users lose access the get the "drive cannot be accessed" error on their end, however when I check the server 3 app, it still shows all users connected and I have let it run for a few minutes and the idle times do change.
I also cannot see any spikes in the Activity monitor that might indicate a memory strain issue on the server side, but I assume that is because I am not watching the Activity Monitor at the moment everyone loses access.
Let me say that the SMB2 protocol does work much better when it actually works, much faster, but intermitent connectivity is a VERY SERIOUS ISSUE and has resulted in several corrupt files for my workers already.  Also, because I was one of the unfortunate people that had the upgrade lock up on me and I had to restart it, I lost my 10.8.x recover backup and so I would have to do a clean install in order to restore my server back to its original state. I am also hesitant to do this because I would most likely only be able to download the Server3 app from the app store and I have not heard from apple or any other power user group on whether the bug is with the app or the OS.

  • OSX Mavericks empty user file?

    Hi,
Thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to answer...!
Running Mavericks OSX, I can click on my hard drive image, and open any file, i.e., "Applications," and browse the items. No problem.
My Home User icon, when selected from Finder window, shows all 8 files from "Applications, "Desktop" to "Pictures," and "Public." However, when I double-click any of these files, they are empty. I give my Mac plenty of time to load any file contents. Perplexing.
I have tried rebooting in "Safe" mode, and I get the icon "Safe Boot" appears in the upper right hand corner.
    Again,
    Thanks.

Sorry, I'm not able to follow what is going on - it doesn't help when you add an extra machine to the mix.
Upgrading to 10.9 should not duplicate files in the home folder however there are some occasions when the installer will make a new user account that can be confusing. I'd suggest taking a full backup and consider erasing & reinstalling if you think this Mac is not working correctly.
As to the laptop, I don't understand what you mean by 'accessing all the other Macs files'. You will need to explain what you saw before things changed. I suspect you may have been using a service like 'Back to my Mac', Dropbox or even File sharing that allow you access to the files on another machine. It doesn;t sound like the default behaviour. It may also help to know if the Mac & work computer are on the same network, or in different locations.
Please provide more info for each issue, screenshots may help if it is something you can show in an image. cmd+shift+4 will allow you to grab a particular area of the screen. Drag the crosshairs over the relevant part.

  • File sharing between Mac Mini and iMac "breaks" after reboot of either device, and won't restore.  Why?  Running Maverick 10.9.1 on both.  File sharing is setup on both.  Help.

I'm a new user - recent convert from longtime Windows to Apple.  Thought having desktops and computing aligned with phones and tablets would help.  Not so far.
I have a MacMini running Mavericks 10.9.1, and an iMac running Mavericks 10.9.1.  File Sharing is set up on both.  If either device is rebooted for any reason, file sharing from the Mac Mini to the iMac "breaks" and will not easily restart.  Various things eventually brings the connection back - usually having to do with checking and unchecking File Sharing, the AFP button, and/or the SMB button on the iMac - but never the same procedure twice in a row.  File Sharing from the iMac to the Mac Mini is never disrupted - always comes back up without a problem.  Screen Sharing also works between both without fail, and comes up after reboot of either.  No problem there.  Only difficulty is from Mac Mini to the iMac.
    Why?  Any ideas?

Should also clarify - usually takes multiple hours of checking/unchecking file sharing settings in order to restore the share between Mac Mini and iMac.  NEVER happens automatically.
This is disruptive because I've got the Mac Mini pointing to several file locations on the iMac for various things - photos, music, etc. - and they all hang up unless the share is restored.  Real bummer.

  • File sharing 10.5 (PPC) with 10.9 Mavericks

Hi, I'm interested in a new macbook air, however I need to ensure that is will network with file sharing to my G5 Power Mac (PPC). This is to transfer files. movies, photos, backup stuff etc . . .
Obviously I can use target mode, and other methods But I'm strickly interested if File sharing over a home network works
    Can anyone confirm this?
    Thank you.

    Got an early start....
    iMac 10.8.5, 10.9.4
    eMac 10.4.11
Both OSX versions on iMac File Sharing & Screen Sharing works both ways, no problem.
PS eMac/10.4.11 needs CoVNC to get iMac's Screen shared.

  • InDesign CS6 file not opening...running OSX Mavericks

Hi there, for some reason I am unable to open InDesign CS6 files.  I've restarted Creative Cloud, my computer, nothing.  I get a prompt saying that some files need to be relinked, which I've had before but then it opens fine.  I can't even open a new document.  This is a new issue since OSX Mavericks update....any thoughts?

I'm a Windows user, but I can tell you that there are thousands of Mac users with CS6, and a god number of them use the new Mavericks without a problem, so it's more likely to be something specific to your system.
I can also tell you that upgrading an OS can be a crapshoot and it's usually better to do a clean install, but I can't promise that wiping your system and rebuilding will solve the problem if it's some sort of conflict with third-party software.

  • Sharing problem from OSX mavericks to windows 7

I want to acces a windows 7 shared folder with my mac. I have schared the windows folder and have given full permission to evereyone.
The workgroup name, login and pasword are the same on the MAC and Windows 7 PS.
I have don a ping test and the result was ok, i've tested with another windows pc and i could connect to the shared folder, just with OSX mavericks it will not work.
    What could be the problem?

    ds store wrote:
I think Apple disabled the Internet sharing, I have a Airport Express and was sharing my internet with my other boxen that need a Ethernet cable to download wifi drivers and one software update later it just stopped.
I think I saw that theory posted elsewhere on the internet. I would think that it would be some software bug rather than Apple giving a no-go to sharing over an adhoc.

  • Installing .air file on osx Mavericks keeps asking for installation package

After upgrading to OSX Mavericks and Upgrading to Adobe CC I'm having trouble installing .air files.
I'm working on OSX Mavericks 10.9.1
I have built an Air application with the Air4.0 SDK in Flashbuilder 4.7 and packaged a release build as a signed Air Package.
When I try to install it by double clicking the .air file , the Air Application Manager Starts but asks for an Installation package instead of using the package I just doubleclicked.
Any ideas how to solve this?
    kind regards
    Patrick

    Hi
I never had Air 3.8 installed on my machine (after a clean install of osx mavericks). Only 3.9  4.0beta and now 4.0 release.
Even now that I reinstalled 4.0.0.1390 I'm not able te uninstall. It still give an "already installed message)
The Package insttaltion problem occurs with any .air file, so for instance even the air SettingsManager.air from the adobe site.
It's probably some hickup with my machine, but I don't know where to look anymore.
I'm not sure what you mean by the app.air file.
I have sent a a simple .air file to your mail address.
Oddly enough when I double click any .air file (and the "select installation package" window appears) and then doubelclick the .air file again from the finder,
the air installation window does appear behind!! the "select installation package" window ( but I can't click it ).
So it seems that, when first opened, the Adobe AIR Application Installer doesn't receive the file path of the .air file that was clicked.
    Best Regards
    Patrick

I've installed Mavericks on my Mac Pro. It works well, generally, but will not stay asleep! Pressing the power button twice sometimes extends the sleep mode but even that seldom results in a full overnight sleep.  File sharing off. What else can help?

    Hi fremley,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This article may be helpful with determining why your Mac Pro doesn't stay in sleep mode:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)
Moving the mouse or using a portable Mac's trackpad, pressing a mouse button, or pressing a key on the keyboard
Some System Preferences settings (see below)
    Open applications (see below)
    Input devices (see below)
    Expansion cards (see below)
Additional drives, such as USB, FireWire, DVD, or CD drives (see below)

  • Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

File Sharing failed between my Mavericks iMacs.  The console logs showed that the target iMac saw the ntlmv2 protocol as unknown to the kdc.  I fixed it by enabling Windows File Sharing on the target Mavericks iMac.  I had tried disabling SMB on both iMacs and leaving AFP on, but then nothing happened when I tried to connect.  Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

When you enable file sharing you need to have either SMB (Windows) or AFP (historically Apple-native) file sharing checked. The default in Mavericks is SMB, and not AFP.
If you uncheck both, then the system will turn off file sharing. Apple supports the use of both SMB and AFP connections in Mavericks, so with only AFP enabled you should have been able to establish a connection, but there could be a small bug or configuration-specific snafu that you're encountering.
With AFP enabled only, try pressing Command-K in the Finder to open the Connect To Server dialogue, and in here enter the address to the system using afp:// as the protocol, such as the following (the name can be looked up in the Sharing system preferences):
    afp://my_imac.local
