Buggy US keyboard layout on JIS keyboard

My Mac Aluminum JIS keyboard does not give the proper symbols when using a US layout. Correct me if I am wrong, but I expect the '@' sign when pressing the Shift+'2' key combination. Instead of this I get '"'. Is there any way to get the mapping right using Carbon?

  • Can I use US keyboard as Japanese (jis) keyboard?

    Hi,
    I'm new to these forums, and I speak and do business in Japanese. Because of this, I need Japanese input on my MacBook, and I am familiar with the Kotoeri setup in Mac OS X and use it often. However, after living in Japan for several years with an Intel Core2Duo iMac with a Japanese JIS keyboard (US keyboard also with Japanese characters on it), I would like to use my US keyboard built into the MacBook as a JIS keyboard. By this I am asking if it is possible to set up a new keyboard map for the keyboard (so when I press the "a" key for example, the Japanese character "ち" is input).
    I would be extremely grateful for any help.
    Thank you,
    Tom

    I don't know of any way to make your keyboard pretend it is a full JIS keyboard, but there are two things you can do:
    +Use Kotoeri Preferences to switch to Kana Typing (Operation > Input Style) . That means a generates ち
    +Use the app Ukelele to create a custom keyboard layout.

  • FCS doesn't remember my Keyboard Layout

    Hello everyone !
    I'm living in France, I have a french keyboard, however my system is in English and all my applications are in English.
    I've taken out from the package the keyboard layout for french keyboard in FCP. I put it in my FCP User Settings. I launched the application, choose the french keyboard layout (it then gives me the same alert message than whan I was with Mac OS X (10.4) : "Keys may not match properly". But then if I quit FCP and launch it again, the keys shortcuts don't work ("jkl" or "b" or any of them). I have to choose again the Keyboard Layout inf the Keyboard Menu. And that's boring...
    (and I have to say it works perfectly on Tiger, it just appeared since Leopard).
    I've tried to trash de FCP User Settings Folder, but it's the same.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks !

    If you use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox then restoring tabs from the last session ("Save & Quit" or "Show my windows and tabs from last time") doesn't work.

  • Ukelele generated custom keyboard layouts not working in Lion?

    I asked this question in the stackexchange site a few days ago.  Nothing I've tried has worked so far, except for creating a new account.  Because a fresh account works, it's got to be something with my preferences, right?
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/21691/ukelele-generated-custom-keyboard -layouts-not-working-in-lion
    Here's the question from above:
    I created a custom keyboard layout with Ukelele (http://scripts.sil.org/ukelele) in Snow Leopard (idea is to generate scandinavian letters with Alt-key, otherwise have a pretty much standard U.S. layout). After the upgrade, the old installed (to ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts) layout wasn't working.
    Ukelele seems to work OK in Lion, but whether I put the generated keylayout in a bundle or single file, or save it "/Library/Keyboard Layouts" or "~/Library/Keyboard Layouts" doesn't seem to matter.
    Help?
    EDIT:
    @Sergio, I cannot choose the layout in Input Sources. One keylayout file I tried:http://semeai.org/~sjl/us-scands.keylayout
    [EDIT: Removed unrelated stuff]
    UPDATE 2011/08/15:
    @Tom:
    Copied your keylayout (it naturally ended up in my Junk folder):
    midgard (01:55) >ls -l ~/Library/Keyboard\ Layouts/MongolianQWERTY.keylayout-rw-r--r--@ 1 sjl  staff  44536 Mar 13  2008 /Users/sjl/Library/Keyboard Layouts/MongolianQWERTY.keylayout
    Logged out, logged in, isn't showing in Input sources (I'm looking very closely between "Maori" and "Myanmar - QWERTY").
    I've also uninstalled bunch of software and plugins giving suspicious messages to system.log, but hasn't helped.
    UPDATE 2011/08/16:
    I created a test account, and lo, the layout works perfectly for it. Also the bug in preferences doesn't show for that account. When trying this on my own account, there are no errors in Console logs with the suggested keywords (I can't seem to locate console.log file, though).
    UPDATE 2011/08/16 later:
    Nuking Library/Caches (and relogging) didn't help.
    UPDATE 2011/08/17:
    I did
    % find Library -name "*.plist" -exec mv {} {}.renamed \;
    and restarted, but it didn't help. I restored the situation with
    % for file in `find Library -name "*.plist.renamed"`; \  do mv "$file" "${file//.renamed/}"; done
    addendum: I also went through all the .plist files with plutil -s as described inhttp://www.askdavetaylor.com/can_i_check_my_plist_files_in_mac_os_x_for_problems .html. There was some brokennes, but in very unrelated applications.

    Tom,
    I think I love you.
    That absolutely did it! Thanks so much!
    If you'll answer with the same link in the stackexchange site, I'll mark the answer as correct, so you'll get the rep there.
    Thanks,
    Sami

  • Customized keyboard layouts - modifier keys

    Hi,
    I have a question relating to the modifier keys in a customized keyboard layouts.
    One can modify existing layouts or create new ones in the form of a .keylayout XML file in /Library/keyboard Layouts or ~/Library/keyboard Layouts.
    According to "Technical Note TN2056" of Apple's online reference, http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/technotes/tn2002/tn2056.html, it is possible to discriminate between the "left" and "right" versions of the modifier keys (e.g. option - "left Option" and rightOption - "right Option"). However, on my mbp 13" all modifier keys seem to be recognized as their "left" versions by the system.
    Is this a known problem? Does anybody know a way to obtain a keyboard layout which can discriminate between left/ and right-modifiers?
    Jan

    This is from the document you cited.
    Note that many hardware keyboards do not have both left and right versions of a modifier key. It is usually safest to specify modifers in terms of the "any" variants (anyShift, anyOption, anyControl).

  • Virtual keys - JIS keyboard layouts

    I have found that the mapping of virtual key codes to actual characters is not exactly right using a Mac JIS keyboard and the US layout. For instance, the @ sign is on the key next to the 'P' key. Using a non-Mac JIS keyboard and setting the US layout gives the expected result: the @ sign is on the same key as '2'
    Is there some way to tell Carbon that when I post a keyboard event (CGPostKeyboardEvent()) for the virtual key code corresponding to key '2', I want the receiver program to get a @ sign (if shift is being pressed)?

    Thanks guys for your help. Much appreciated.
    I tried your suggestion to reset the SMC, but unfortunately it didn't help.
    So I rang the Apple customer service here in Japan. To my surprise the phone call was toll-free, even from a mobile. They were very helpful and even called me back several times. I usually only complain about Apple customer service in Japan, so it's nice to be able to say something nice about them for a change.
    Anyway, my keyboard is working properly again now, and I'll write about how it got fixed so in case anybody else has this problem they can find some help here.
    So, resetting the SMC didn't work, so we tried clearing the PRAM by restarting and holding CMD-OPT-P-R. According to the Apple operator, that usually helps with this problem, but it didn't in my case.
    Next we created a new user account to see if the problem was system-wide, or just specific to my user account. The keyboard worked fine in the new account, so the problem was specific to my user account, which suggested that the problem was in one of the libraries (.plist).
    The operator consulted her techies and called me back. Unfortunately, there was no way to find the problem without going through every .plist one by one, so in the end I had to do an 'erase and install'. So I backed up with Time Machine and reinstalled.
    When I restored from Time Machine, I had to do it manually by dragging and dropping from my external hard drive. I restored everything EXCEPT the 'library' folder. The operator went through the back-up library folder with me, taking only those .plists that I really needed, such as my email settings etc.
    And that's it. Finished. Took me ages, and I'll never know what caused the problem in the first place.
    Thanks again for your help, everyone.

  • Bug report: A keyboard layout is incorrect on the remote with Japanese keyboard

    This is a bug report for Microst Remote Desktop
    ===================================================
    ## Summary
    A keyboard layout is incorrect on the remote with Japanese keyboard
    ## Version Information, I tested
    * Client
        * Case 1
            * MacBook Pro with JIS106 Keyboard
            * Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
            * Microsoft Remote Desktop 8.0.24308
        * Case 2
            * MacBook Pro with JIS106 Keyboard
            * Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.1
            * Microsoft Remote Desktop 8.0.24308
    * Remote
        * Case 1
            * Windows 7 Professional Japanese
        * Case 2
            * Windows Server 2008R2 Datacenter Japanese
        * Case 3
            * Windows Server 2012R2 Datacenter Japanese
    ## Detail of bug
    When login from Mac OS X with Microsoft Remote Desktop, the keyboard layout is always incorrect on the remote.
    The client machine have a built-in keyboard of JIS 106 layout,
    and the primary language is set to Japanese.
    But on the remote, the keyboard layout is US 101.
    So a input of Shift+2 does not result " but @.
    I've seen the above behavior on the 3 remote enviornments described the above.
    This bug did not occcur with Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1, even if the system language is English and keyboard layout is Japanese.
    ## Captures
    I've took some of screen captures.
    I'm sorry for the capture includes Japanese words, so I added description in English.
    Capture 1:
    Mac OS X Keyboard Setting
    Capture 2:
    Windows Server 2012R2 Screen Keyboard
    Capture 3:
    Windows Server 2012R2 Screen Keyboard, with a additional registry key configured.

    This bug also affects the Canadian English settings.  If the client is set to Canadian English with a US keyboard the remote server is setup using a Canadian French keyboard.  Using the language selection in the toolbar you can temporarily correct
    the problem but the keyboard resets to french at the most inopportune times.  The was a problem in the earlier RDP client and was fixed so it's sad to see it reoccur in the new client.

  • Not work 3 keyboard layouts

    Then I use 2 languages,  Option          "XkbLayout"     "us,lt" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, then work keyboard layout.
    If I use 3 languages in XkbLayout, then not work layout.
    There some part of /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
    Section "InputDevice"
            Identifier      "Generic Keyboard"
            Driver          "kbd"
            Option          "CoreKeyboard"
            Option          "XkbRules"      "xorg"
            Option          "XkbModel"      "pc105"
            Option          "XkbLayout"     "us,lt,ru"
            Option          "XkbOptions"    "grp:alt_shift_toggle"
    EndSection

    You didn't tell what's your problem is though. I suppose you just cannot switch layouts with Alt-Shift, right?
    Try if Shift-Alt (sic!) works for you. Also try grp:ctrl_shift_toggle (only RightCtrl-Right shift work, LeftCtrl-LeftShift switches to first layout instantly).
    alikas wrote:So it is bug?
    Yes. Both xkeyboard-config 0.6 and 0.9 are buggy, but bugs are triggered for specific keyboard layout combinations.
    For example, I had bug with 0.6 with my xorg config, while many others don't.
    0.9 fixed bug for me, but now other people have problems.
    As you may see in that bug report the problem mostly depends on XkbLayout combination, though I thought it was due to grp:alt_shift_toggle first.

  • Japanese IME with non American (- Swiss) Keyboard layout?

    Hi, I am trying to use the Japanese IME to type some japanese. However that seems to change the underlying keyboard layout assumed as well - with the IME I now get Z, Y, *, (, ) and other characters when pressing the keys they are normally assigned to on an American keyboard:
    http://www.dtp-transit.jp/images/apple-keyboards-US-JIS.jpg
    which is different from the Swiss layout:
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e1/Keyboard_Layout_Swiss.png
    For example, in the Swiss keyboard, the * character is suppsed to be Shift+3, but in the American it's shift 8 and so with the japanese IME on, I only get it that way.
    Is there some way to select the keyboard layout used with the Japanese IME? On Windows, this requires a hack (you need to tell the IME which keyboard layout dll to use via the registry), but it is at least possible:
    http://nejtj.blogspot.ch/2011/09/howto-japanese-ime-with-non-japanese.html
    Is there some way to get the Japanese IME on Mac to use the Swiss keyboard layout? I wouldn't bother having to manually recreate it if that was the only option, but tell me where to start.
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

    You set it in the Kotoeri preferences, found toward the bottom of the "flag" menu when one of the Japanese IM's is active:

  • Changing keyboard layouts, the difficult way. Japanese layout into Dvorak.

    Hello,
    I was wondering if there is a way to change the keyboard layout systemwise.
    The thing is I usually use a keyboard layout that is very similar to dvorak, of course I have a working layout for this and that's what I'm using right now.
    But now and then, I need to write some japanese as well. What I would like to do is to remap the japanese layout into a dvorak table and still be able to get the shift-jis input.
    In windows it was possible to go into regedit and just change a string and voila you did it. Is there any similiar way in doing it in OSX?

    On a sidenote, the keyboard layout I'm using is downloaded off the internet and then installed, so I'm guessing the layouts that you can choose from are sort of pre-set.
    I have a couple downloaded layouts listed in mine, so I don't think these are pre-set. But I think they must be Roman (script) and perhaps must be installed in Home/Library/Keyboard Layouts. If you would like to send me your layout, I can see if there is a problem with it (tom at bluesky dot org).

  • JIS keyboard assistant configuration

    I am connecting a G4 Powerbook 1.33 Ghz to a DVI USB KVM switch sharing a generic mouse and an Apple JIS keyboard. The default language used in the Mac OS X is Japanese and other International settings (Formats and Keyboard Inputs) are in Japanese as well. When I first connect the KVM to my Powerbook, i was prompted to run the Keyboard Assistant. By selecting the JIS option in the keyboard assistant, the Apple's USB JIS keyboard has no problem inputting each key correctly, both in English and in Japanese. However, if I reboot the system or re-connect the KVM switch (disconnecting/reconnecting the USB cable) from my Powerbook, couple of the keys that input the Japanese characters will not respond when they are pressed. I have to manually trigger the keyboard assistant again to configure the keyboard to be in JIS layout for those keys to respond correctly again. So is there a way for OS X to think that every connected keyboard follows the JIS layout? If running the Keyboard Assistant is the only solution to this, then how would I automate the Keyboard Assistant after login? Thanks in advance.
    Cheers!

  • Assigning keyboard layout automatically to certain applications?

    i want to assign my keyboard layout to automatically switch to swedish or US when i switch to certain applications. the reason is because of some keyboard layout collision with shortcuts bug in some applications.
    example: i use swedish layout in my writing apps like text edit, mail and ichat, and US layout in some of my working apps because of the shortcut bug problems. so when i switch to ichat i want the keyboard layout to autmomatically switch to swedish and when i switch back to the working app id like it to switch to US.
    so far ive used the input menu, but its a drag doing that all the time, i did assign the input menu switching to a shortcut which makes the process a bit easier but sometimes i tend to forget to do it and the application shortcuts stop functioning when i activate the buggy app and i have to restart it. ugh!
    also i tried with checking the "allow a different input source......" setting in international but its just really what im looking for.
    anyway, it gets really annoying doing this manually everytime when switching, which i do really often.
    is there a way to do this, maybe some third party application? i've tried to google it but i didnt find an app that lets me do such a configuration.
    powerbook hi-res 7200rpm   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    im not sure how that OS9 keyboard layout thing works
    but im not using classic at all on my computer.
    The point is that you can use OS9 keyboard layouts that are based on KCHR resources in OS X just by changing the name and installing them in Users/username/Library/Keyboard Layouts. I have no idea if it would solve your problem, but I think it would be worth a try. You can download Swedish.rsrc here (using a Mac):
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/fs/FileSharing9.html
    Another approach is to take a keyboard that does work and try editing it so it works like a Swedish layout even though programs think it is US or whatever.

  • Problem with external USB keyboard layout that differes to the macbook one

    I have a MacBook with a US keyboard layout and attached to an older (pre aluminium) japanese keyboard. As long as I stick in the normal mode (eg not japanese input) all keys work as they should. But if I switch to japanese input, the keyboard also switches to japanese input.
    I suspect it is because in the Kotoeri Preferences under "Keyboard layout for Romaji" is US selected. But from this dropdown I cannot choose any japanese layout.
    How can I fix this? This is really annoying, all the time when I input some japanese text and want to use any of the other characters (eg & or %, etc) I need to use the keyboard on the Laptop because else I do not get the correct characters.

    Tom Gewecke wrote:

    I don't think that matters -- the point of this preference is to allow correct Hiragana input by people using non-US latin keyboards.
    Yeah, neither do I ... but somehow os x doesn't see the correct keyboard layout once I switch to japanese input.
    How can I fix this? This is really annoying, all the time when I input some japanese text and want to use any of the other characters (eg & or %, etc) I need to use the keyboard on the Laptop because else I do not get the correct characters.
    Is it not possible using the JIS Japanese keyboard to make & and %? I see them for example on this picture of one.
    If I view the keyboard viewer I see the correct japanese layout, but if I want to type the keys as shown there I get the input like on the US layout on the keyboard in the laptop.
    eg shift+6 = &, but on us you get ^. so when I am in normal input I get the &, but if I switch to japanese input I get the ^. And this is really annoying, especially some keys "disappear". the ¥ (yen/backslash key) just doesn't work at all in japanese input.

  • JIS keyboard became a US keyboard

    Hi all, this is my first post on this forum, so please be kind
    I have a Japanese Macbook 3.1 and it's nearly 2 years old. The built-in keyboard is JIS - that is, the punctuation keys are slightly different and it has Japanese characters as well as the roman alphabet. Until now, it's worked perfectly. I also usually use an apple wireless JIS keyboard, and that works fine, too (unless used in tandem with the new magic mouse, but that's a story for another post).
    Suddenly, about a week ago, for no apparent reason, the keyboard layout changed to a US layout. So now all the punctuation doesn't match the keyboard. For example, I press the ')' button, and I get '('. Very annoying.
    I've racked my brain trying to find a solution, and spent hours going through discussion forums, but I haven't been able to find a solution. I tried the 'change keyboard type' button, but that didn't work because a) it only works for connected keyboards, not the built-in keyboard, and b) even when I set my bluetooth keyboard to JIS, it still works as a US keyboard.
    I tried using Terminal (I'm a relatively new Mac user, and Terminal is still quite foreign to me). I tried deleting the .plist (sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboardtype.plist) to force the computer to re-identify the keyboard, but again, this is only for external keyboards, as far as I can tell. I also tried the keyboardsetup.app in Terminal, but that didn't appear to do anything (it didn't find any unknown keyboards)
    I also read about resetting the PMU, but as far as I can tell, the Macbook doesn't have this...is that right?
    Has anybody had the same problem? How did you fix it?
