Build quality differences ?

Are the later models ie 2010 models better built than the earlier models. I just bought a jan2010 8900 and it seems a lot better built than the one I had last year , or is it just me ?

I don't recall any differences however, I've only had one and it's from january 2009.  Everything is made in China so build quality is not that great across the entire line of BB's.  It's adequate but not exceptional.

  • Macbook vs Macbook pro for ruggedness/build quality/toughness/knocks etc.

Question is about the ruggedness and durability of the Apple models and how they stand up to knocks in the field.
Apple do two models and I want to clarify the differences in build quality. I'll compare the old and replacement models and would appreciate feedback.
Old Powerbooks are all made from titanium right?
Old iBooks are all made from plastic.
If I go for second hand, which of the above will be the toughest and stand knocks and been used in the field?
    New Apple laptops.
MacBook Pro's are all made from titanium right?
MacBook's are all made from plastic.
If I go for new (so far looking at cheapest MacBook - plastic), which will be the toughest and stand knocks and been used in the field?

If you need something truely rugged, a Panasonic Toughbook is a great, although expensive, way to go. I have a CF-29 and I have dropped it in my driveway with no damage. Heck, I have even put it on the floor and stomped on it with the lid closed to show my friends' it's durability. I work in construction, so I thought I would need something rugged. Truth be know though, my MBP would get me by just fine--especially since I can use XP on it. Drawbacks to the Panasonic? EXPENSIVE!! Oh--and it only runs Windows!! LOL!!

  • Print quality difference between iphoto and aperture...?

when ordering books, is there a print quality difference between using iPhoto and Aperture? or are they sent to the same lab?
it's possible i may have some setting wrong, but when i order a book using iphoto, i never really feel the quality is that great. it's good, i just feel it could be a lot better. the print quality sort of reminds me of newsprint, albeit high quality newsprint. similar sized prints made at home on my basic 3-in-1 printer look better.
    thanks...

Previews are what you view on your display. When you import a photo into Aperture (and I'm pretty sure iPhoto as well), your computer automatically generates a preview for quick viewing. The original images are stored in your library, but it is the preview that you see.
In Aperture, you are able to set the size and quality of these previews. When sharing photos between Aperture and iPhoto, the process is as follows:
Let's say that your images are stored in Aperture, but you also want to be able to view them in iPhoto without taking up too much room on your hard drive. Essentially, if you were to import the originals into iPhoto as well, you would be storing two exact, yet separate copies of the same image on your hard drive. As you are aware, with large images (whether JPEG's, and especially RAW) this would put quite a tax on your storage capacity after not too long.
So, you have your images in one or the other (in this case Aperture), but you want to play around with them in iPhoto. What you can do, is open iPhoto, go to the File menu and then select, Show Aperture Library. This will open a window with all of the contents of your Aperture Library. You can then drag any images you want into iPhoto . The only thing is, you are not dragging the original JPEG's, but rather, the previews of those images. If you have those previews set to a lower quality (again for capacity concerns), you will only have lower quality and lower detailed images in iPhoto. These images might not be ideal, or even suitable for printing high quality prints. The previews that you generate in Aperture though can be adjusted to be extremely high quality with no size limits.
My thinking was that since you mentioned Aperture, it sounded like you had experience with working with it and with ordering a photo book through Aperture. I guess you were saying that you ordered via iPhoto, weren't happy with the quality and were wondering if Aperture created books were better.
Anyway, if this is the case, I cannot answer that for you. I have never ordered a book through Aperture. If the quality of your images is good, you should be able to get a decent product no matter where you order it from. There is not doubt that the materials used and the print shop that does the work makes a difference, but if your images are good, you should still get a decent product through iPhoto. Perhaps iPhoto isn't the way to go though if you have had poor experiences with them.
If you haven't used Aperture yet, I would highly recommend it though aside from the photo book aspect of this thread. It is a stellar product.
    I hope this helps.

  • LARGE GPU vs. CPU Export quality differences in MPEG2 (and others?)

I noticed that encoding to MPEG2 (for DVD's) using the CPU (through Media Encoder) produces much better results than does the MPEG2 codec the uses the GPU.  Just finished a documentary and was preparing it for DVD.  During fades to black, I would get grey macroblock errors on the first full-black frame.  Also the encode quality was very poor (mosquito noise, lots of pixelation, and the macroblock errors).  Rather than exporting directly from the timeline, I decided to queue to Media Encoder (which on CS6, only uses the CPU).  While this increased the render time from 20 minutes up to 55 minutes (for a 57-minute show), the resultant file was of much higher quality (less mosquito noise, no macroblock errors, MUCH less pixelation).  Both of these encodes had the exact same parameters.  Exact. With the Media Encoder render, the CPU was maxed properly at 99% and the GPU was only handling the RT Effects from the timeline and such, varying in the low percentages of its utilization.  With the GPU direct timeline render, the CPU was working around 40%-50% and the GPU was utilizing about 50%-88% of its potential.
I also tried test renders changing from single-pass to two-pass encoding.  Absolutely no difference.  Results were visually identical with same issues in GPU encode.  Also tried the usual tests with switching on and off various features (maximum render quality, maximum depth, etc.)
I'm assuming, as with many other compression programs, there are different codecs because of the different processor architectures (cpu vs. gpu).
Has anyone else seen whether this has been resolved in later versions (CC+)?  Because while I LOVE the low render times, the quality difference is HUGE (with MPEG2 for DVD).

  • How to build a difference between to dates

    Hi @All,
Hope you can help me :) ..
I'd like to build the "difference" between two dates (e.g. date of the invoice and date of the payment receipt). As the result I expect an Integer.
I tried several functions and operations, but still get the error code: [nQSError: 22023] An arithmetic operation is being carried out on a non-numeric type.
I also tried to cast the date format into an Integer or double, but I still get an error ...
    Here is my code:
    CASE WHEN "2_Forderungsstruktur_Fälligkeiten".DIM_DATUM_FAELLIGKEIT.DDAT_DATUM_DE < 0
    THEN NULL
    ELSE
    "2_Forderungsstruktur_Fälligkeiten".DIM_DATUM.DDAT_DATUM_DE - "2_Forderungsstruktur_Fälligkeiten".DIM_DATUM_FAELLIGKEIT.DDAT_DATUM_DE
    END
Hope you guys have some good ideas to solve these problem :)

  • So, hows the build quality?

One of the thing si really like about my iBook is how solid it feels. How does the build quality of the macbook stand up?
    Any creeks?
    Much keyboard flex?
    Does it feel cheap?

    Build quality is GREAT
No creaks, even seams, very very solid.
Keyboard is very sturdy and one of my favorite things about the new book.
I think you will be impressed.

  • 5800 Really Bad build quality

Well I am now on my 3rd 5800 and they all seem to have really bad build quality.  As others have mentioned there is a big gap along one side of the phone (top right hand side running down past the volume buttons) and in the dark light leaks out through the gap
Come on - how can anything like this be put out to the general public - this is a serious issue.  If you can get one side of the phone to close properly then why didn't you get the other side to do the same?
As a product designer I know that during the design stage there are several prototypes made, parts checked etc - how could this be passed as ok?
I am seriously considering ditching the 5800 all together - for something that Nokia are classing as a premium model they really need to re-consider its quality.

This is really annoying me as well.  This phone cost me a lot of money and it's the worst build quality/design I've ever seen.
People talk about dust getting in through the gap but what worries me is that it is much more likely to let in moisture!   I've checked with Vodafone and moisture damage is NOT covered by their warranty. So unless Nokia admit that it's a manufacturing fault you'll have to pay for the repair youself.
    Of course,
    1) If their wasn't a gap down the side of the case water wouldn't get in so it wouldn't need repairing!
    2) If the phone gets water damaged it's almost certainly going to be classified as "beyond economical repair"!
Come on Nokia, admit it's a manufacturing fault, recall all the phones and repair them free of charge.

  • Blackberry Torch 9810 battery life and build quality

I'm going to be getting a new Blackberry soon and I wanted to know what the 9810 was like. Can someone please tell me how it compares the the other Blackberry 7 devices, especially the battery life and the build quality of the handset?? I'd also like to know what the call quality of the handset is like, through the earpiece and the loudspeaker.
    Thanks to anyone who replies.

    Thanks for replying,
Were you a heavy user of your 9810 (i.e. leaving the phone signed into Facebook, twitter, etc... and heavy use of BBM)?
How long did the battery last on average?
And how strong and sturdy was the slider mechanism??
I use twitter all day long, facebook set to evey 3 hours, and have 11 BBM groups.
Usage is tough to measure as there are many factors. I can go a whole day or mabye need to change once during the day when too active on it.
my 9800 not 9810, lasted me very well and the slider was still like new. it is built well. I sold it to a friend so i could have a 9810.

  • Tape or Live Capture? Quality Difference?

I have never captured live footage direct from camera to computer. I have an opportunity to do so tomorrow on a 2-camera shoot. I have questions:
    1) Is it possible to capture 2 firewire streams simultaneously in OnLocation or with some other program?
    2) Is there a quality difference between live capture from an HDV camcorder and from a tape?
    3) I have a Matrox MX02 Mini with which I can capture a stream via component HD. How does this compare quality-wise to HDV?
It is a long event - a bodybuilding contest (about 4 hours)  I would love to save time not having to capture from tape afterwards, but wondering if the setup is worth it. I do not have a laptop, so I would bring my editing computer to the gig.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
If you shooted in DV format (standard resolution) monitor your footage on a Standard tv monitor, not on a HD one.
Did you shoot with extended play activated ?

  • Build quality question

The left side of my MacBook (the side with all the ports) seems a little loose to me, especially toward the front of the machine. If I press it, it will deflect inward a little bit and creak. G4s by comparison are built like tanks it seems. Should I be concerned about this or is this just the normal build quality of a MacBook?

yeah, they all do that. Why on earth would Apple choose to NOT use real screws in the area that receives the most use, i.e. where all the ports are? The screws there are just cosmetic to balance it out with the right side.

  • Quality difference between picture taken with iPhone 4 and 4S when sent to iPad?

Is there quality difference in picture if it's taken with iPhone 4 and sent to iPad via iMessage or if it's taken with iPhone 4S? Or does the software compress the images so that it doesn't matter if the 4S has better camera because both will be compressed to equally small file size?
At least video quality is compressed so badly when sent via iMessage that it's unwatchable in iPad. Picture quality seems "ok" when sent from my iPhone 4, but I'm thining if 4S would be able to send images in better quality.

Yes, but iMessage will always "optimize" videos (= make the file size small and quality bad), does it make the same process for images too? If it does, then the slightly better camera doesn't matter because both will be compressed to same low quality file.

  • Print PDF vs Save as PDF - Quality Difference?

I know there's other posts about PDF vs Save but I didn't see my issue answered, so here it goes:
I print a lot of large-format (24"x36" and larger) Illustrator files that contain both vector drawings and raster images.  The guys at my print center insist that we do a print to PDF and not a save as PDF.  So my questions are:
Is there a quality difference between printing and saving?
Does one have better vector quality?
Does one have better raster quality?
    Thanks!

An important oversite is accessibility. Apparently screen readers, like JAWS, used by visually-impared students, can NOT interpret PDFs created via printing. However, PDFs created by "Saving As" CAN be read by JAWS.
Since colleges, like where I work, are required by law to be accessible ("508 compliant"), this becomes a huge issue. Therefore I'll be recommending that all faculty create PDFs using the "Save As" function, large file or not.
BTW, I suspect the problem with reading "print" PDFs may have something to do with JAWS inability to interpret Postscript.
    Any ideas anyone?
If so, feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]
    Thanks.

Encore - CS6 vs Older Version (2006 Copy)  Encoding Quality Difference?
I have an 2006 Copy of Encore for SD DVD's, will a new version have better quality encoding? Thank You

They both use the MainConcept encoder, so it's likely you won't be able to see much difference.

  • Build quality of the C2D's?

Just a quick question for current C2D MBP owners.
I have had pretty bad experiences with the previous generation of MBP (Core duo). The lid closes unevenly meaning to say that the gap for 1 side is significantly wider than the other.
    Hows the build quality now?
Oh and about the downclocking of the x1600 display card. Is it running full now since there is no heat issue will the C2D running cooler?

I don't believe it is running as fast as it can in the 15". If I'm remembering correctly the core clock frequency was at about 400 MHz, and the memory was at about 445 MHz. (I could very well be wrong, so don't take my word on it)
The "max" specs (without over-clocking) for the card are 475 MHz for both core clock frequency and memory. Again, I'm not positive on this.

  • Build Quality.

Am I the only person who has noticed that my older Macbook is of a far superior build quality than the newest one bought this year? The keypad for one thing on my old one feels springy and rebust - the plastic on the casing doesn't have any sharp edges. The new one feels more Emelio than Jobs!

Sorry, I've missed you saying anything about a car charger.
Anyway, it's not for me to judge. The mobile provider has to make that determination for warranty repair. You could appeal that within your provider, I suppose, but like I said, many carriers will consider that physical damage.
Since it's so fairly new, I agree with you though, doesn't seem like physical damage to me.
