Building a media server with apple tv

I am interested in building a media server to store my 500+ moves. I have an apple tv that I will use to connect it to my tv. Are there any recommendations for an expandable RAID server that would be compatible. Ideally I would like 6+ hard drive bays.

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is marked solved, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one.
Try control - clicking on it and see if you get an open option. If not, go to System Preferences/Security & Privacy/General and set it to 'Allow apps downloaded from' anywhere. For safety, you might want to change it back to something more secure.

Setup a home file/Media server with no internet access

Hi,
I have a home network with a wifi router connected to an Adsl modem. I try to setup a new server (macbook pro with Yosemite as OS) which will be only used as file and media server for my local network.
I DO NOT want this server to have access to out of my local network and no one out of my local network could access it. in other words, it has to be isolated as a local server with no incoming/outgoing access from out of my local network.
I should mention that this server can be accessed by other family members and they can setup other applications without my awareness... and I do not want to manually deny each access request (in or out) in the server's firewall and I am not always behind the server. I want to be sure that "all access" from/to out of my local network are denied.
my local network dhcp rang is 192.168.10.10 to 192.168.10.20 and I have a firewall on the router and one on this server (little snitch).
I have no idea how to do this, how to configure IPs out of my local network in the firewalls etc...
I would appreciate if anyone can help me (I have a limited knowledge about networking)

Thanks for your reply ChuckBing.
Unfortunately I had already copied the instructions I found in the Sun documentaion to the letter and it still needed access to the internet. In the end I solved the problem by pointing the iepluginurl to a non existent file and putting a URL, pointing to an offline JRE executable on the server, as the message that appears when the applet cannot be loaded. The clients then have the choice of downloading the JRE or installing it online by clicking on the URL.

Integrating Flash Media Server with other formats

I would like to create a standard screen/player that can play
any of the following formats:
windows media files, all flash files, quick time files, real
player files.
So, for example, lets say I want to manipulate the screen to
be an exact aspect ratio and have the same skin, and exact same
controls as my flash files, but I don't want to work with Real
Server or a Windows Media Server to serve these files what is the

There are two parts to this,
Flash Media Server application - both client and server side. Check out the video conference app here http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashmediaserver/sample_apps.html.
The client side app will be a .swf file which you can develop in Flash/Flex.
Second, you will have to embed this swf file in your asp.net page that will be delivered to browsers. I am not an expert in asp.net but googled a bit and get a feeling it's possible using
tag.

Possible to install and configure adobe media server with existing apache

Hi All,
I am wondering if you know whether or not there would be an issue installing AMS Pro on a server that is already running a Moodle installation (2.4) with Apache 2.2?
If I opt to install AMS without installing apache, can I manually configure the exiting apache to enable iOS support, etc?

Using a Mac Mini as a File/Media server with different accounts

I recently bought a new iMac and decided to use my G4 Mac Mini as a media/file server and backup server.
One of the decisions I can't figure out is how to organize all of my files and user accounts. I especially would like to be able to access them from either my iMac or my Powerbook. Also, I'd like to be able to use the iMac as the main iPhoto and iTunes machine.
So here's my ideal situation:
On the Mini create a user account for each media/user type: Music, Movies, Photos, Backup and then on the other Macs automount each user.
But I can't because once you connect to a mount via Finder you always connect via the same user. (is there a way around that?)
So I guess I can do it all under one user account, but then all of my configurations require subfolders which I was trying to avoid. It also means that if I give my kids access to one set of media, they get access to all.
Is there any way to create a more segmented Media Server? Is there any reason to or am I just making this too complicated?

One more important detail. I have external HDs connected to the mini as well. While testing the single user method, I realized I couldn't mount those external HDs. Could be because I set the media user to a Standard User. But I still find that odd.
One way I did find to solve my ideal situation is to use Windows File Sharing instead of Personal File Sharing. By editing the smb.conf file I can share specific directories under specific users.
But surely the best way to network on a Mac is not using Samba is it?

You should be able to stream from a Flash Media Server.
The URL should look like this:
rtmp://xxx.yyy.com//flv:
You can do some tests from a PC to get the exact URL that would suit your environment.

Is it normal for my DL speeds to drop in half while streaming video off media server with E4200v2?

I am on a 3MB plan and i noticed DL speeds drop quite a bit while the streaming from the media server? is this normal?
Also my Linsys ATA is on a static IP and when I review in Devices it will show offline though someone could be talking on the phone. What would be causing this?

There's a whole bunch of articles on the internet on DSL PPPoE MTU. If you google "DSL MTU 1492", you'll probably find a lot better explanations than what I can give you.......
If you want to run the test in the link below, you'll find that 1464 is the mtu without fragmentation. Then you add 28......and you'll get 1492.

Sharing a media server with MobileMe over Airport Disk

Is there anyway to set up a NAS drive or Linux Media Server to share over MobileMe using the Airport Extreme's Airport Disk Feature? I haven't been able to find a solution. Thanks.

The drive would need to be connected to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) USB port in order for it to be shared out as an AirPort Disk. That would rule-out a Linux Media Server (or any other Media Server) or Ethernet-only NAS drives.
On the other hand, there are potential solutions outside of Back to my Mac/MobileMe to access either of these remotely. However, if your goal is to stream, especially HD video, over the Internet you may not get the desired performance that you are looking for.

Windows iTunes Server with Apple TV clients

Hello everyone.
I am hoping to set up a new digital media system in my house. I have the following plan, and would like to know how well this would work.
I want to install a "Server" box with windows server 2008, and put the latest version of iTunes on it, then authorise it with my apple store account and set iTunes to run on start up. Then, I want to get two apple TV's put one in my bedroom, and one in the lounge and hook them both up to the server.
Next, I will rip all of the DVD's I own with something like MacTheRipper, and then handbreak them down into the smaller file format. Hopefully then I will be able to watch all of my DVD movies in both the bedroom and the lounge disc free.
Also, using home sharing, will I be able to copy media from my, and my girlfriends mac books to the server, or will I need to be on the server, and copy from the mac books? (Could syncing help here).
Also, for occasions where I am not in the lounge, bedroom (for example when cooking) would I be able to point front row on my macbook to the iTunes server?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I would like to get going with this little pet project ASAP.

You could always just hard wire the mini since it doesn't matter where you put it.

Mac mini server with Apple remote

Hi,
Bought my mac mini server november last year, and much to my surprise, with it came an Apple remote. Not the latest one but the flat all-white one.
This weekend I have redeployed the mini in my house and want to start using Frontrow, however my remote does not seem to work with the mini.
I have tested the remote with a number of other maca and atvs, there it works fine.
Any pointers appreciated

That is really strange, the remote is not list as being in the box on the Mac mini Server's Specs page!
I believe it used to be, there was definitely a pre-formed space for it in the box
Have you checked the battery since it is an old model?
I mentioned i worked perfect with any of the other Macs in the house
You can use Mac Help in the Help menu of the Finder. Go to Index>A>Apple Remote for troubleshooting and pairing instructions.
Not sure if this is the issue, since the server version does not have an optical drive, I was wondering if it has an IR eye

Home Media Server with iTunes...Please Help!

My goal:
Set up mac mini as iTunes server that stores music on NAS.
I want to be able to connect with multiple laptops.
Also, I want to be able to purchase from the laptops and download to the NAS so that all of my libraries are the same.
Is there a way to configure this in iTunes, or do I need to use a 3rd party application( If so, boooo apple).

Can Connect To Server With Apple Mail?

Hey All,
I've had my OS X Server running as a mail server for a few months now and things have been pretty sweet. My local clients have been using Mail.app to access their mail and Squirrelmail for when they are out of the office.
My question is, some of my employees have asked about using Mail.app/Outlook etc instead of WebMail to access mail when they are outside of the office. I figured this wouldn't be a problem but I seem to be having some connection issues. I can successfully get mail to pull down messages via pop, but it fails to connect to the SMTP (running on the same box) Not sure if it's a culprit but we have a firewall in place that blocks pretty much everything but the following:
53, 21, 80, 143, 110, 25 and I've just added 587.

I put the server into the DMZ on our little router still with no luck so it makes me think it's not likely a firewall issue with the router. I'm not using the software firewall that comes with the server (yet).

Building a music server with g3

Hi- I have an old blue and white powermac g3 which I'd like to turn into a music server. To do that I need a much bigger hard drive (min 250g) and the ability to link into my airport network. Can folks give me some ideas about how to accomplish this at a reasonable price (I'm not a computer geek, but I'm also not afraid to try things). Thanks -Howard

A Mac-specific SATA controller card and SATA drive can be used to boot most PCI-slot Macs. A generic controller will not boot a Mac.
At the moment, SATA is working fast only because the drives with the SATA interface are the latest drives. There is nothing inherently faster about SATA, it is not magic, it is mostly hype.
The transfer rates advertised are the maximum theoretical transfer rates. Since there are no drives that can maintain transfers at those speeds for more than an instant, those numbers will not be seen in daily use. The same fast drives are available with pATA, LVD SCSI, and Fiber-Channel interfaces, too.
As for that software, you would do better posting on one of the iPod or other music forums, or doing a forum search for those names. They do not get tossed around regularly down here in the older Macs sub-basement.
