Building a small network with Windows 7 machines

This isn't necessarily Premiere or even video-related, but hopefully some of you hardware/networkin gurus can offer a bit of advice...
I've been using my ISP's rather cob-job DSL/hub/WAP for awhile, with my two workstations cabled to it, and my laptop accessing it wirelessly. I frequently push files between the systems, but, since the hub is only 100Mbit ethernet, and the WAP is 11g, shoving large files around is an exercise in mind-numbing patience. On the software side, I just click a bunch of buttons until the various systems show up as accessible on the others--I really have no idea what I'm doing in this regard.
I've got a GigE switch on the way, with enough Cat6 cable to connect all the computers directly to the switch, and then to the DSL modem, so at least the networking between my systems will be far faster. However, I'm still in the dark as to the best way to actually establish the network on the software side of things. How should I set up shares between the systems? I don't have a NAS yet--that'll be a later investment--so I need to be able to drop files from System #1 on System #3, etc. I've tinkered around with the Windows 7 "HomeGroup" funtionality, but that seems like it's more designed to easily set up swapping of music and documents and things like that.
Another consideration is that my laptop usually goes with me to various remote locations, where I either plug in to a cabled network, or access it wirelessly. How can I maintain some semblance of security, both at home and in the field, without unnecessarily hobbling the connection?
I appreciate any insight and advice you guys might have. Thanks!

Colin,
I have three servers, 01 and 02 and an ESX server. Two run plain vanilla Win2008 Server, the last one runs ESX/VMWare and Win2008 Server. They are physically miles apart but connected over a VPN. All local machines are either cable connected with Gb Netgear unmanaged or HP managed switches and the routers at both sides are Draytek Vigor 2820 Vn ADSL2+ modems or they are wirelessly connected over 801.11n.
Some local machines are part of a domain, others are not.  Whenever one starts a machine, they are automatically logged in, using a vbs script, and the networked drives are automatically connected. Some of these drives are local, others are over the VPN connection.
This gives me the following drives on my video machine:
but gives me the same networked drives on all other machines.
One thing to note, drive K, named 'harm' contains My Documents. This is automatically synchronized with my notebook, so I can access all of My Documents when I work off-line and they are automatically synchronized when I get back on-line on the network. The same applies to my wifes My Documents and my daughter's and my son's files, all using active directory.
Furthermore all networked drives are backed-up daily over the VPN to a NAS. To add to that, my daughter in Switzerland can connect to the servers here over a VPN so she can access our files here.
The only thing you do not yet have is a dedicated server running Win Server 2008 and possibly Exchange Server 2010. That would make your life a bit easier. For example, I only have Office on my notebook, but sometimes need to check my mail on my video machine. Using Exchange Server and OWA (Outlook Web Access) I can easily consult my mail on my video machine, send, reply or forward without having Outlook installed.
Check your PM for a graphical representation of my network.
Sharing with two PC's on the same switch seems like the most down-to-earth approach that will do what you need initially. Forgive me for not remembering all the gory details, but this network here has been in operation for over 5 years now and is a bit beyond what you want to achieve now. Just set sharing and it should work.
If you have difficulties, let me know and I will ask my son (MCITP, MCSE, MCSA, MCP, MCDP, etc.) what your best approach is.

  • Networking with windows machines

I recently bought my MacBook and one for my wife. My only problem at the moment is that I cannot figure out how to "see" or find the windows computers on my office network.
Here in my main office I have an Airport express, where I've connected my laser printer. I've installed Bonjour on the Windows machines and all of us print fine. Obviously I connect fine to the internet through this connection. But nobody can find how to put files in my drop box, nor can I find how to put anything on theirs. In all there are about 12 Windows machines connected to the Express, a few wireless, but most wired through a switch with fixed IP's. Most are windows XP. 4 are Vista.
At home I connect fine through my time machine to my wife's Mac Air.

can you confirm what IP address your mac has in the network preferences.
Then goto a pc and check what ip address that has click on start, run, cmd press enter, in the dos window type ipconfig press enter
This will display the IP of the pc
the ip addresses should be on the same subnet eg they both start wit 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x etc
If that is the case then you are indeed on the same LAN.
Then try manually connecting to a pc, from the finder press command + K then enter the pc servers address eg
    smb://192.x.x.x

  • Home networking with Windows machines

I just purchased a backup drive Clickfree Wireless automatic backup - see http://www.clickfree.com/products_c3.php#
I want to leave it plugged into my Mac, and have it back up my Mac and laptops (I have an iMac and 2 Laptops... one running Vista, one running Windows7). To do that I need to network the computers. They are all connected to the same wireless router. I can get the laptops to see each other, but can't consistently get them to see the iMac. A couple times they did, but mostly it doesn't show up. Once I was able to access the iMac from the Windows7, but the Vista machine tells me the username is wrong.
I found thishttp://support.apple.com/kb/ht1549 and followed those instructions. One thing: after going to the Advanced Network Settings and setting up the WINS workgroup (I add the workgroup name in the dropdown list), then Apply... if I later go back into that screen, it's not showing up. It's like I never entered it.
I think I'm rambling... can someone tell me... in just the simplest terms possible... what I need to do on the iMac to get my Windows machines to see it... or if I need to do something to my Windows machines?
And don't say I should have bought MacBook... I know
    I'm running 10.5.8
    Thanks

Any ideas?  Anybody else have an issue like this?

  • Networking with Windows PC

I have 2 computers. One is a Powerbook G4 12-inch. The other is Dell Dimension E310. They both connect to the Internet perfectly via an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. I would like to transfer files (picture, movies, etc.) from the Powerbook to the Dell. I created a Network Place on my Dell. In the Network tab in the Finder in the Powerbook, the Folder of my workgroup is there. I try place a file inside that folder but comes up with "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured. (Error code -61)" All I want to do is set-up a netywork so the 2 computers can recognize each other and send files to each other once in a while via the Airport Extreme Base Station. If this cannot be done, please tell me. If it can be done, what are the easiest steps to get this done so the 2 computers can recognize each other and send files to one another?

If you are asking about such a question it is best answered by posting a new question.
You can cut and paste the question you posted here and ask about networking with Windows servers. You will get more and better responses from more mac experts.
You should have no problems. The key word being "should". The reality is that frequent changes to X security and the Windows environment may break the ease with which you can network. Don't worry about reading and writing to a disk that has been formatted diffently. Mac and windows machines are frequently interfacing with drives formatted in foreign formats with no problem. The network should handle the differences.
What you should be concerned with is the IT support that you may or may not have with an orphan laptop. Many in IT don't want to deal with macs (or linux, or anything else). Without their support you may not be happy. It won't be the mac's fault but that does not matter.
The good thing about the new mac laptops is that you can also install Windows and if any problems persist you can switch to Windows while resolving any mac issues. It really is pretty tough to claim that macs can't exist in pc land any more. Before you may have had to resort to virtual pc (with it's issues) but now you can just reboot into Windows. You should not have to but it is there if needed. I see no reason to not get the mac.

  • HP LaserJet M1120 MFP will not print on wireless network with Windows 8.1 operating system

The printer worked on the wireless network with Windows 8.
I have been advised that it does not work with windows 8.1 because a driver is required. However this is not available to download.
It is ridiculous that by having the latest operating system I am unable to use the HP printer on the wireless network
When will HP have the driver to download?

  • How do I connect to a Wi-Fi network with Windows 10?

QuestionHow do I connect to a Wi-Fi / wireless network with Windows 10?
AnswerNote: This article describes connecting to wireless networks in Windows 10. Separate articles exists for doing this in Windows 8 and Windows 7.
To connect to a wireless network in Windows 10, follow these simple steps:
Select the wireless icon in the bottom-right near the clock. If you don't see it, you might need to press the up arrow to see more icons.
A panel will open on the right that lists detected wireless networks.
At the bottom of the panel, you'll see buttons for Wi-Fi and Airplane mode.
Ensure Wi-Fi is enabled and Airplane mode is disabled.
Select your wireless network from the list.
You can check the box next to Connect automatically if you prefer.
    Now select Connect.
If it requires a password, it'll prompt you. In that case, enter your credentials and follow the prompts.
You can also watch this video showing how to connect to Wi-Fi with Windows 10:

What are you trying to do the password on .. I have never noticed that it is limited to specific lengths unless you use WEP.. surely you don't use wep.

  • Message not working with gtalk on Mac in office network, but Gtalk is working in the same network on Windows machine

I was using Windows machine at my workplace (Office network), gtalk used to work absolutely fine.
Now I started using, Mac everything is working fine but my Gtalk account configured in Message is not working.
Gtalk is working fine as soon a connect to my home network.
I have tried configuring Nimbuzz and Psi , but of no use.
    Please suggest.

Ok, after 40 minutes on the phone with the most patient and helpful Apple tech ever, the problem was fixed. Still not sure what did it though. Basically what I did was this-
    Completely uninstalled iTunes, details here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224
I even removed all files associated with iTunes, which is further down the same page. Don't worry, you won't have to delete your music.
Then, I emptied the Trash and restarted the machine. I then checked for updates for every single App on my machine, upgraded to 10.6.4, and downloaded the iPhone SDK - not sure how this helped but anyway....
Then I restarted the machine again.
I then verified and repaired all permissions through the Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)
    Restarted the machine...again.
I then downloaded the latest version of iTunes and installed it...and it worked.
Now, at this stage I was skeptical as anyone who has read my first post will know, restarted the machine previously left me back at the start. Well, I just restarted the machine and all seems good.
So, I'm not sure (neither was the tech actually hehe) which step specifically fixed the problem, so you might want to try them all.
If this doesn't fix your problem, my heart goes out to you! Perhaps try calling tech support-

  • Building Small Network with Interconnected 2960Xs - No Connectivity

I am trying to create a network with a client connected to a 2960X, which connects to a second 2960X switch, which connects to a server. I have setup the switch connected to the client with an IP address of 10.0.1.1 for its vlan1. The second switch has an IP address of 10.0.2.1 set for its vlan1. I then interconnected the two switches using the GigabitEthernet1/0/1 interface in trunking mode on each switch. I was not able to ping the second switch, so I then configured the GigabitEthernet1/0/2 interface in access mode and connected the two switches. I am still not able to ping the second switch from either side.
What do I need to do to get this setup working? Should I be using a single VLAN that spans the two switches? Should I be using trunking or access mode for the interface that interconnects the two switches?

That is correct, each switch has only one vlan, vlan1.
    Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.
Thanks, will change all interswitch connections to trunk. Will leave all host to switch connections at access.
Unfortunately, I cannot post the output as it is from a terminal that cannot be connected to the Internet or even the Intranet and USB storage is not permitted in the area, so I cannot copy the output into a text file on a USB drive. I would have to type everything out. If there are parts of the sections of these commands that may be show the issue, please let me know and I can type up those sections.
    vlan interfaces are both up.

  • Hints and tips for creating a wireless network with windows

    G'day All,
I am trying to setup up a wireless network so I can share large files between my Macbook Pro and my housemates Windows XP machine.
I have no problem actually creating the network on my Macbook Pro and his windows machine can "see" it butI'm having trouble with my housemate's machine actually logging into my network (he can see it though).
I happy for him to dump the files (camera raw files) into my Drop box if it's the easiest solution.
Can anyone provide me with a basic step by step guide on what settings i need to fiddle with on both machines for it to work.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Problem networking with windows PCs

I'm trying to share my "public" folder with the Windows computers on my network, so I start Windows Sharing, and then it tells me I have to enable at least one user to start windows sharing, so I enable my username, and put in my password. When I go to the windows machine, I create a new network place, etc. and browse for my computer. My mac is found, but it won't let me open it at all. When I right-click and hit "open", it asks me for my password, so I put it in, and now my entire home directory is available to everyone on the network (not good). I can't for the life of me figure out how to stop it from sharing EVERYTHING in my home directory. Even if I stop windows sharing and reconnect, it still remembers my password and shares my entire home directory. I realize that I signed in on the remote windows computer as myself, which was a mistake. How do I sign out??? Even when I "disconnect from server" on the PC, it doesn't actually disconnect. My second question is: How do I ONLY share my "public" folder? Every piece of documentation I've found on the subject says that by default it should ONLY share that folder, yet it shares EVERYTHING. It won't let me connect to my computer at all from the PC unless I put in my user password. Please help!!! Thanks!
    Powerbook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks for your replies. I found a solution to my problem and it was indeed fixed by changing settings on the XP. It was related to sharing from a NTFS filesystem.
My problem was, I could ping the XP, even login with remote desktop, only I was unable to connect to shares. I saw the hostname in the network list, and if I connected it listed the shares, but after identification it always failed to find the alias. Trying via the command shell with smbclient showed me it gave a NTSTATUS_LOGONFAILURE.
If found this article Q304040 on the microsoft knowledge base :
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040/en-us
In my case switching the "Use Simple File Sharing" feature OFF solved the problem.

  • No Networking with windows

Ok, I have still have a big problem with networking at my work place. My mac running 10.6 can find the two other Macs and access there files ok. The big problem I am having is that the Mac will in no way find the Windows NT computer which is hooked to the image setter on the same network. This is a big problem, since I lay out art in Illustrator and send it to the Windows unit to be processed. So no Apple talk! So now what?

I'm having the same problem and none of the suggested items work.
The really embarrassing thing is that I'm trying to convince my wife to switch to mac (which I just did) and she can go on her windows machine and move files back and forth and I cannot.
Error message: "There was an error connection to the server "10.0.1.1". Check the server name or IP address, and then try again... or contact your system administrator
I cannot see the windows machine in the Finder sidebar, I do have SMB enabled. The only evidence I have that there is a windows pc out there is in the DNS tab of Network, it is listed as a server.
I'm fairly new to mac, so I may be missing something but I've gone through just about every menu item on the iMac to find some irregular setting and can't (doesn't matter whether firewall is on or off either).
I'm sure someone will find the answer, so I'll just subscribe to this thread and wait...
    thanks in advance,
    tom

  • Firewire networking with Windows

I have an Intel Mini running 10.4, two Windows machines running XP with Firewire and an external firewire hard drive. Now, in the past, I had the two Windows boxes networked via firewire (yes, Windows can do that and it's FAST) and had the hdd hooked to one. NOw I want to network my Mini to the other two. Can I? If so, how?
Would I need two firewire cards in a machine to make this happen? If so, maybe one turned on to be a network and one to be normal?
    Thanks
    Dan J

I do think it requires another FW card... think I read that with IP over FW it needed it's own.

  • Problems networking with Window Vistat

I have a macbook pro which I want to network with an older windows vista laptop to transfer files. But I cannot connect to the windows machines using the same parameters that previously worked with an older macbook 10.4 machine.
I go to connect to server, use SMB://IP address of windows machine. I have disabled all firewalls, enabled sharing on the windows directory I want to access but still nothing, despite the fact that in 'network-system preferences' the ethernet status is clearly shown as connected.

  • OS9.2- Is it possible to network with windows PCs ?

Relatively new to the world of macs -have a Quicksilver(2002) dualbooting into OS9.2.2 & OSX Tiger. It's connected via a netgear router to the internet which works fine in either system.
When booted into OSX I've worked out how to network with the 2 other Window XP computers that are connected to the router, but I can't figure out how to get the mac to see the other computers when booted in OS9.2. Is it possible or not?
Also although I can access shared documents on the PCs while in OSX I can't get the mac to see the printer that is on the network (connected via 1 of the PCS.)
Is it because it's an OKI C3200 colour laserprinter & it's incompatible with a mac, or have I just not set it up correctly?

OS9 doesn't understand SMB, it can be set up to read PC disks via SCSI, but haven't found a way to Network it yet... unless you can get hold of an old copy of Virtual PC®, or get some Mac Services on the PC itself.
