Building a Voice Lab

Hi Guys,
Im currently building a lab and looking for any knowledge in what devices i will need.
Im looking to construct 3 seperate networks connected by an MPLS WAN. The networks must be able to communicate with eachother by voice video and also be able to have Music on Hold, Voicemail and PSTN failover. The networks will also need their own CUCM server to maintain redundancy for if the WAN is not available.
Could anyone please tell me what devices i should purchase.
is this design optimum? The topology will be something like this.

Nathan,
My only suggestion would be to see if you can get anyone you know provide the bootable media or download it for you as you can change the downloaded iso to be bootable (many threads on how to do that here) with assumption that it would be just for lab and not production deployment. If your company does not currently have CUCM or you do not know anyone who could provide it to you I don't know of other ways to obtain it.

  • CCNP Voice Lab - What to buy?

    Hi folks,
I've been searching the web for some examples of a voice lab, however to me it's unclear on exactly what I need. Do you mind taking 5 minutes to help me out?
I've already got a lab using ESXi, CSR1000v a couple of PIX 515's and a POE switch along with 6 x 3750's. I've got several 2621XM on a shelf that could be restored with 64MB of Flash and 256MB of RAM. I've also got a 2851 but with no RAM or Flash. Plus 2 IP Phones.
What I'd like to do is build a voice lab that allows me to setup CME and to simulate calls going across PSTN (to simulate WAN failover). I imagine I'll only need two physical routers, the rest can be done within ESXi using CUCM with CIPC's, unless of course the IP Phones are required when the site is running CME.
I want to simulate a company that grows from single site, to multiple site centralised CUCM, then build a de-centralised cluster then move to a cluster to cluster over the WAN. Working this way with a goal helps me learn rather than reading books/watching videos.
    What cards/routers/cables do I need?
    many thanks
    Dave

    Thanks afmmanicke,
Which of these cards however do I need and why?
I've seen that the following versions of CME are available, for studying what do you folks recommend?
    8.6 - Cisco 28XX
    4.1 - Cisco 2621XM
I'm leaning towards 8.6 but for CCNP Voice not sure if it's overkill or 4.1 is not enough.  Version 8.8 and above requires 29XX which is out of my budget.
    thanks
    Dave

  • Minimum hardware for 'voice' lab ? - Please answer.

    Hi,
    I've got (3) C2610's running IP Plus IOS 12.3. I also have (2) Cat 2912XL.
If I want to play with VoIP configurations, how much am I going to miss if I don't have a Layer 3 switch ? I mean, the Cat 3550 is kind of a little expensive for me and therefore I would like to play with VoIP without a layer 3 switch for now, if possible.
    Please advise.

Thanks. It is a C2610. I put 64D and 16F and I am running in reality the Enterprise Basic image from the XM platform. The problem is that it is 12.3 and I see that XM's 12.4 don't run on C2610's.
    How about the switch ?
Can I practice voice labs (at CVOICE level) and dispense the need for layer 3 switches ?

    Hi,
We are trying to build a development lab in our setup which will be used purely for development purpose of ICM/CVP/CM.
I need some guidelines or factors to be considered or some kind of recommended approach with latest ICM/CVP SW version available and which servers are suitable to build this LAB.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Vikram,
More or less you can start from here:

  • Building A CUCM lab with SNOM 710 IP Phones

Hi there, this is very basic but since I am just getting to know about IP telephony and CUCM, If any one can guide and help me with configurations and procedure for the following tasks,
I have downloaded a free demo copy of CUCM 8.6 which i intend to use in lab for practise purposes, I have got 4 SNOM 710 SIP Phones and a cisco 2960 switch to work with, i need to enable telephony between them and also enable all the features which I can.
My question is what steps should i do on CUCM after installing it as a VM on my Vmware workstation or else dedicating a spare server which I have , installing ESXi on it and then creating a CUCM VM.
What services and features I need to enable on cucm and how do i register these phones and users to enable calling.
What configuration do I need to do on the switch and the phones.
Is there any way that i can get a free copy of Unity connectcion to enable voicemail in the same environment.
    Waiting for Help.
    Thank you

    Hi Shaik,
As far as I know , u require the licenses may be DEMO.
Since u have installed the CUCM, you can check the same under Call Manager  Administration----System --licensing Report.
If phones are in same network with CUCM, you can assign static IP  addresses or go for DHCP option assigning tftp option 150 with CUCM IP address.
else you can for Data and Voice VLAN config on the switch and do inter VLAN routing on L3 device.
    regds,
    aman

  • Voice/Data T1/E1 Crossover back-to-back Cable DIY or Buy?

    Hi All,
I am trying to build a Voice lab and it's starting to cost a fortune for the kit.
I have seen a T1/E1 cross over cable on the link below and I need two of these from my set up
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UTP-Voice-data-T1-E1-Cross-Crossover-back-to-back-Cable-Cisco-Voice-CCIE-CCVP-/230771200798#ht_1364wt_1231
Could anyone advise if this is a special type of UTP cable or is this standard Ethernet cable with RJ45 connectors just with a different pinout configuration?
If it's just the order of the wires in the cable I have a reel of UTP and a crimping tool I can use to make my own
Your help is appreciated as always
    Cheers,
    David

T1/E1 cross over cable is very easy. You should make yours and dont waste your money buying ready made..
The pin out you need is this..
    1----------->4
    2----------->5
    4----------->1
    5----------->2
The images below shows you the pin out configuration

  • Cisco Voice Home Lab

    Hello,
I was wondering what would be needed to set up a basic Voice lab for home. I have a lab currently of 1 2610, 12 2500's, 1 4000. A 2950 switch, and a Catalyst 5000 switch.
I know I would need atleast two IP Phones, 7960 or 7940's. Would a Cisco 2620 with one FXO and one FXS vic cards be a good gateway? What would I need to run CCM or Cisco CME. Can I run Call Manager express on the 2620?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks again!!
    Scott

You can run CME on a 2620XM. See the following site for specific platform informaiton for CME version 3.4.

  • Build a Cisco CCNA/CCNP/CCIE Virtual Lab with ArchLinux and CSR-1000V

    Hi All,
I'm working on the CCIE certification, thought I would share with you my scripts for building a virtual LAB. I'm using ArchLinux and the latest CSR-1000V (ISO) as of June 20th. Cisco should allow you to download this ISO for free. You'll be limited to 100kb/sec out of the box, but you can also get a free 60-day eval license that will unlock 50MB/sec.
These scripts assume you have QEMU installed of course, bridge-tools, etc.
Probably want to enable KSM first
    echo 1 >/sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run
This script makes one virtual disk per virtual router. I suppose you could boot one router, let it go through the install, then power it off. Then use that disk as the parent for many others (qemu backing_file). However, the CSR-1000V seems to generate various UUID's for itself during this process and I wasn't sure how this might affect the trial license.
    Boot'em up:
    # How many vrouters you want
    ROUTERS="1 2 3"
    # Location of your ISO
    ISO="/mnt/nfs/downloads/csr1000v-universalk9.03.15.00.S.155-2.S-std.iso"
    # Path virtual hard drive storage
    VDISKS="/srv/qemu"
    # Build Virtual Disks (might only want to do this once)
    for x in $ROUTERS; do
    sudo qemu-img create -f raw $VDISKS/r$x.raw 8G
    done
    for x in $ROUTERS; do
    sudo nice qemu-system-x86_64 -name r$x -daemonize -enable-kvm \
    -nodefconfig -nodefaults -no-shutdown -rtc base=utc \
    -S -cpu host -m 4096 -smp 1,sockets=4,cores=1,threads=1 -balloon virtio \
    -drive if=virtio,media=disk,cache=none,format=raw,file=$VDISKS/r$x.raw \
    -drive if=ide,index=1,media=cdrom,file=$ISO \
    -net nic,vlan=1,macaddr=68:09:68:09:68:5$x,model=virtio \
    -net tap,vlan=1,script=no \
    -net nic,vlan=2,macaddr=68:09:68:09:69:5$x,model=virtio \
    -net tap,vlan=2,script=no \
    -serial telnet:127.0.0.1:720$x,server,nowait \
    -monitor telnet:127.0.0.1:710$x,server,nowait,nodelay \
    -nographic
    echo Booting Router $x
    done
Note that VM's boot in CPU suspended state. That's because the CSR-1000V ISO installer doesn't correctly auto-detect serial-console mode, so you have to manually select it (but only on first boot, subsequent boots seem to get it right).
So, get xterm's going and in each one, telnet to the virtual serial port: 7201, 7202, 7203, and so on for each router.
Boot them each with this command
    echo "cont" | nc 127.0.0.1 7101
    echo "cont" | nc 127.0.0.1 7102
    and so on
Now just tie together the interfaces however you want. For the connectivity in the picture, use the following:
    # Build lab ethernet segments
    for x in 1 2 3; do
    brctl addbr lab$x
ip link set up dev lab$x
    done
    # Bring up tap devices - allocated by QEMU but not up'd
    for x in 0 1 2 3 4 5; do
ip link set up dev tap$x
    done
    # Virtually plug in our ethernet cables to correct switch ports
    brctl addif lab1 tap0
    brctl addif lab1 tap2
    brctl addif lab2 tap3
    brctl addif lab2 tap5
    brctl addif lab3 tap1
    brctl addif lab3 tap4

  • VOIP home lab with cisco 2620 and VIC-2FXO port

    Hi all,
I m considering building a home lab for studying CCVP, the lab would be based on the follow components :
    - CUCM 8.X (already installed)
    - A couple of soft phones running in VMWARE with IP Blue and CIPC (they are already in place and registered with the CUCM)
    - Cisco router 2620 with NM-2V and VIC-2FXO-M2 (for europe, I'm in France)
so here are my questions :
1/ it looks like the NM-2V comes with integrated DSP, so I should not need more DSP, I have got one PSTN analogic line only so I can make only one call at a time, please confirm
2/ my analog line comes via my home internet provider dsl box, i have already tried to connect an analog phone and it works, please confirm the router will be able to receive and place calls
thanks for your help, I m looking forward to begin my voice lab

    1. Yes, the NM-2V has built-in DSP resources for up to four calls (max voice port density with two 1st generation VICs). You cannot add further DSP chips to the NM-1V/2V, nor would you need to for what it does. You have one PSTN phone line, thus you can only make one call at a time. If you had a second line you could use the other FXO port for a second concurrent call.
    2. If the phone line works then it will work with the router to make and receive calls. As Gregory said, just configure dial peers for what you need to do.
Here is some info on the NM-2V:

  • Any recommended Ip Phone Model For CCNA Voice?

    Hi Guys,
    Good day!
Any recommendations for ip phone for ccna voice?
I plan to get basic hardware:
    1 x 2801 - already have
    1 x 3550 -  ?
    2 x 7960 -  ?
Is new phone models like 8961 compatible with 3550 poe ?
    Thanks !!!

Is new phone models like 8961 compatible with 3550 poe ?
The 3550 supports both the cisco pre-standard poe and IEEE 802.3af. So it should work.
In the official course (the exam is based on that), 7965 ip phones are used. although the 7960 is an old type model, it's still fine to practice. If you want to buy some more on eBay I would try to get some 7962 or 7965. When practicing all these phone features you need a couple of phone-buttons so I wouldn't buy 794x phones.
For your 2801 you need PVDMs and you should also look for an FXS-card to attach an analog phone.
And if you want to practice with CUE, then you need an AIM2-CUE. But these are still quite expensive on ebay, so I would skip that in the preparation.
And don't forget a VMware-host for the VMs running CUCM, CUC and CUPS.
If all this is too much effort to build your own lab, then you can rent labs with this equipment at vendors like INE or IPexpert.
Don't stop after you've improved your network! Improve the world by lending money to the working poor:

  • A Portrait of an Creative Labs as a Young

Hi-o. I'm posting this thread to spark discussion and user-interaction (supposedly the purpose of this "support" forum)
My first mp3 player was an Intel 28 meg pocketconcert from, oh, I guess it was the year 2000. Amazing player, never broke, never had a single problem. In fact, it still works today, but obviously it's pretty much useless to most shoppers without DRM support and whatnot.
My second player was an Archos Jukebox Multimedia hard-dri've that came out long before the iPod and other music hard-dri'ves (I'm not sure if it predated the Nomad or not).
Anyways, I'm telling you about those two because both of these products were better than the Creative Zen Touch.
Oddly Enough, the Archos product was quite fragile and broke on me three times. The third time it broke, the screen cracked, but it still functions to this day (aside from a dead microphone and screen). Even with faults, the Creative Zen Touch cannot compare.
Why is it that in 2005 the Zen Touch doesn't have have a microphone or a radio? The Archos player had a high quality mp3 microphone on it. They didn't even advertise that feature. In fact micropohnes seem to be standard issue on "uncreative" products. Go figure. The Intel mp3 player from 2000 could receive radio broadcasts while the Zen Touch can't be bothered.
I cannot understand why for the life of me why it doesn't have any kind of sound effect features. I was expecting to be able to have fun adjusting the pitch and making echos and stuff on songs on the player. But nada, nothing. The Archos mp3 harddri've had more audio FX features than Creative. Creative better bring a baggie for their teeth when they go toe-to-toe with Archos.
Anyways though, I don't really care about the Zen Touch. I don't really care about Yahoo Limited or Napster 2 Go either, because I barely use the thing as much more than a paperweight anyway. It does bother me reading this forum, however, to see how nasty the company has been in support of the Zen Touch. In my opinion, the company and it's support staff on this board have acted very unprofessionally and have given vague, nonsense answers to requests for information. If you haven't received any information on when firmware upgrades or whatever synonym you give to "patches" for your faulty product, then why don't you walk down the hallway to the Creative Laboratory and ask someone when it's coming? Take the initiati've; I know you can do it. *Thumbs up*
Just the fact that this message board exists boggles the mind. I've seen many posts by employees from the company that, to paraphrase, say "Creative doesn't sponsor these forums, it's just for user-interaction"... And yet this board is linked from the "Support" section of Creative's website... Shouldn't it be linked from Creative's "Community" section instead... I can't help but feel that there is a constant "Holier-than-thou" attitude coming from Creative support staff and from posters who are "in the know" or who have a product other than the Zen Touch and are "inconvenienced" by repeated requests for information regarding the release date for the product's patch. I'm probably going to be a victim to these wonderful folk in subsequent posts in this thread if precedent holds true. As if it is a "privilege" for us to even have a this support forum to post at... Puh-leeze. Anyways I don't really want any response from support staff or anything in this thread, unless it is to apologize and write me a check for $300 for my inconvenience.
All I want is to interact with some other Zen Touch owners who are sad, and make them glad.
    Hope you enjoyed my post.
    Sincerely,
    Martin Joseph

    Duffymj,
The player was sold with the features it advertised. The fact is that you can add a microphone and a FM Radio to the Zen Touch by using the FM Wired Remote with it. This is a feature that we are building in on current players, but was only available as an option on the Zen Touch.
My main objection with your post however is with your mischaracterization of the Forums and their Staff (myself included). At the top of these forums it is made very clear what they are intended to be (namely a place for Creative customers to discuss Creative products). Never have we said that these forums are not "sponsored by Creative" as that would be ridiculous given that we are Creative employees and the forums are on a Creative server. What we have said is that these forums are not for official support, mainly because we are not staffed in such a way to reasonably be able to do this (The team consists of 3 full time Moderators/Admins plus our supervisors). In the case where direct support is needed, we make sure that the person is directed toward support for their region (be that email or phone support).
As far as "walk down the hallway to the Creative Laboratory and ask someone when it's coming" comment, that would be a little difficult as the "Laboratory" is located in Santa Clara, CA and Singapore (whereas we are located in different parts of the world, but not in the same building as the labs). Instead we send regular emails to those who work on updates and post about what we get in reply. Gi'ven the huge amount of initiati've I've seen taken by the Forum team in passing along information and getting information I doubt they will need your encouragement, but thank you.
Gi'ven that Archos (the main company you used in comparison) does not offer an official discussion forum I guess I would say that it is a privilege to have an official forum for discussion (most of our competitors do not have a place like this). I certainly try not to have a holier-than-thou attitude and I don't know of any regular posters who come off that way to me (although your post seems to hit that note once or twice). Overall we have received very positi've feedback from customers about the forums because we let people have a place to get help from others, talk about products, and even on occasion, vent frustrations (in a producti've way).
Gi'ven that this was your first post I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that your intentions are to be constructi've. Another tirade like this and you will find yourself banned, but I would much rather have constructi've discussion than have to ban a user. I am closing this thread however.

  • Problems with CMYK/LAB colors

I'm independent and I send many print jobs to different print shops. I recently discovered to my horror that some color critical jobs have gone to press (to the same shop) with mismatched PMS colors. At first I blamed the print shop but they complained the CMYK values did not match. When I opened the two brochures in question, one had (for example) Pantone 288 C, color type spot, Color mode CMYK, 100/67/0/23 (dimmed because the colors came from an imported illustrator eps logo). The second (bad) brochure had the same color and color type, but in the mix it had Color Mode: Lab, L 8.039, a 8, b -50 - greyed out because again, the color came from the SAME eps file.
My next step was to remove the logo file from the bad Indesign doc. Then I doublechecked the color - success, the color now says color mode: Pantone solid coated, 288 C (which is from the built-in indesign swatch book). Then I brought BACK IN the logo file from the brochure that printed correctly. The color reverts back to LAB again!
When I import this same logo into a blank document, the colors are fine (CMYK with proper values).
I'd seen in other forums suggestions to check or uncheck "Use Standard Lab Values for Spots" in the Ink Manager, however both documents have this unchecked. (Adobe seems to encourage checking LAB but I've never done this, I'm afraid to start now as it will probably give my print shops fits.) And both have "convert spots to process" checked, which I always thought was the cure-all: shouldn't PMS 288 (CMYK) always be PMS 288 (CMYK), as long as both are converted to process? Why would one being a LAB and the other NOT being a LAB make them different? 288 should be 288....? (but I guess not....)
The good news is, the Zevrix extension "InPreFlight" will warn me if run on each document, so I don't have to drive myself crazy opening old files and doubleclicking every color. But I'm wondering what the heck is happening.
CLUE: I believe this all stemmed from a "brilliant" idea I had to shorten the list of color types to choose from by going into Indesign>Presets>Swatch Libraries and removing libraries I'd thought I wasn't using - I left all my Pantones, but I must have deleted an important one, because it was after I'd done this that I had noticed the Lab colors rearing their ugly heads. However it didn't occur to me that LAB (CMYK) would be different from regular CMYK since they have the same name. When I replaced this folder with one from another mac, viola, the problems stopped. However it doesn't stop the old, previously created files from continuing to open wrong and be printed wrong, if I don't catch them.
Any insight anyone could provide would prove most helpful. It would be nice to get a night's sleep for a change.....thanks!
FYI I'm using Indesign CS3 5.0.4 (recently updated) with Color Settings CMYK: U.S. Sheetfed Coated v2 and color management policies-preserve numbers (ignore linked profiles).

    >one had (for example) Pantone 288 C, color type spot,
Mike, you are implying in your post that your jobs are being output as CMYK, but your colors are set as spots. If that's the case your printer is converting the spot colors to process CMYK, which would cause the problem you are describingPantone Solid colors are converted to CMYK via color management when Use Lab is checked. The resulting output values would depend on the document's destination CMYK profile.
If your job is indeed CMYK you should stop using the Pantone Solid library and use the Solid to Process library instead, which always output as Pantones CMYK builds.
Use Lab is useful when a job is to be output as Spot color because you will likely get a more accurate preview of the color and a better proof to a composite printer. Many Pantone colors are out of the CMYK gamut. Lab can also be useful if you are sending a job to CMYK and you want to color manage the conversion of a solid color to CMYK, rather than using Pantones built formulas which are device dependent.

  • Problem with Gatekeeper license in lab

    Hi,
I'm dealing with my CCIE VOICE lab prepearing for exame.
I have 2811 router with ios version 12.4(24)T4.
Since i didn't find the gatekeeper functions enabled i tried to get a demo license from cisco.
1 The license site support now only 29xx and 39xx series for gatekeeper 'cause 28xx in out of sale
2 i tried anyway to get a license and looks like it worked. I got a license file.
3 Installed the license file in the flash, rebooted and checked for activation. The gatekeeper command still miss.
During license installation i got this:
    ACCEPT? [yes/no]: yes
Installing...Feature:gatekeeper...Successful:Not Supported  * ( does this mean that my router doesn't support the gatekeeper function ? or is related to the thing reported in point 1 ? )
    1/1 licenses were successfully installed
    0/1 licenses were existing licenses
0/1 licenses were failed to install
The show license command is blank, but the show license details reports this:
    HQ-ROUTER#sh license detail
Index: 1  Feature: gatekeeper                        Version: 1.0
    License Type: Evaluation
License State: Active, Not in Use, EULA accepted
Evaluation total period: 8  weeks 4  days
Evaluation period left: 8  weeks 4  days
    License Priority: Low
    Store Index: 0
    Store Name: Primary License Storage
So there is a license, active but not in use. Don't know how make it In Use.
    I tried this:
    HQ-ROUTER#sh license status
    License Type Supported
    permanent  Non-expiring node locked license
Does it mean that my router does not support demo\evaluation license?
Could be this because is an
    2800 Software (C2800NM-ADVIPSERVICESK9-M), Version 12.4(24)T4 ?
I really appreciate feedback about this issue and possible solution.
    Thanks, regards
    Michele

Gatekeeper licenses are enforced from IOS 12.4(20)T or later and requires you to install the license post upgrade (the eval license gives you 60 days in which to register). Additionally, a 2800 or 3800 series router requires a 'C' image from Table 1 in the below link:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/unified-communications/unified-border-element/order_guide_c07_462222.html
