Building my first Site, and have a few questions...

Hi people.
Despite being a Designer (albeit a non-practicing one at the moment!), I've never done website design before. So, I'm having a go with iWeb to learn some basics, in the hope that my knowledge will improve as time goes on! In the meantime however, I have some questions, which I think I know the answers to, but will ask anyway!
1) When I add an album, I notice you can choose to have a border round the picture. I know this can be changed for different styles, or even nothing at all. However, I like having a little border round the image-but the one I have comes up white. Is there anyway i can change the border colour?
2) I want a page with a few links on, but I don't want to have them listed as URL's. Can I make buttons for them? For example, if I wanted to link to the Apple Store, the idea would be to have some sort of button with the Apple Logo in which when clicked takes you to the site. Can this be done in iWeb or should I be looking at more advanced web building programs?
3) I'm going to have a page with some music interests on-can i make a link for an artist or that particular track that will take you directly to that artist/track in iTunes? Like you click it, it opens iTunes and directs you to that page?
Any help appreciated!
Dan

Or does iWeb re-size them?
Dan ~ In iWeb click on the iWeb menu and choose Preferences... You'll see a check-box for +"Optimize images on import"+. In iWeb's Help viewer it says:
Reducing a photo’s file size: Resampling (or downsampling) is a method of reducing a photo’s file size. Downsampling helps your website publish faster and helps photos display and download faster for your visitors.
Photos you add to a Photos template are imported full size and downsampled automatically when you publish.
For very large, high-quality RAW and JPG images, you can choose iWeb > Preferences and select “Optimize images on import.” This setting reduces the size of imported images by up to 60 percent so they don’t take up as much space in your Domain file.

  • First site, almost done, a few questions...

Hi all. I'm nearing the end (I hope) of my first flash site
    and have a few questions.
Most pressing - I've hit a wall on this error #1009 at frame
    1. I've read a bit online and and understand what it is, I just
can't figure out what I've left out. Code is attached.
Each label in the code refers to a label on my main timeline.
At the end of each animation I have gotoAndPlay(nextIntro). All of
the animation is located within the same scene. It seems pretty
straightforward but I'm clearly missing something.
On a related note, what is the best way to create large flash
projects with lots of animation? I've laid everything out
chronologically within a single scene. This seems like it will
work, also seems like it could get messy as projects got larger. Is
there a best practice or some reading online regarding this
    subject?
Help on my error would be FANTASTIC. Insight on general
philosophy/structure would also be much appreciated. :)

    The full error is:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of
    a null object reference.
    at portfolio21test_fla::MainTimeline/frame1()
The code extends from frame 1 to frame 29. At that point we
have a stop(); then the outro plays. The last frame of the outro
    has code stating gotoAndPlay(nextIntro);
From this point on, the other scenes in the movie have intros
without any code since they just need to play. This is followed by
    a stop(); keyframe at their midpoint and gotoAndPlay(nextIntro);
keyframe at the last frame of their outro.
In recent tests, I'm not getting the error when the file
first loads. I only get the error when I click on the button
instance "main_btn". I can click on that button as soon as the
movie loads and get the error, or I can click around to the other
frame labels without the error, then click main_btn and get the
    error...
Would a screenshot of my timeline (or anything else) be
    helpful?

  • New to IPhone and have a few Questions?

To start I want to say that I am a long time (25+ years) veteran of technology but am new the the IPhone. My IPhone is not Jailbroken and would like to keep it that way if I can. Allthgouh I did jailbrake it with blackra1n for about 30mins then I did a factory reload and let it be as it started acting stupid once I started installing apps from unofficial sources.;) Im a x86 nerd and NOT a MAC guy. I haven't sat down at a MAC/Apple in about 15/20 years.
I just got my first IPhone 3Gs/16GB. (Coming from a BlackBerry Curve 8310) the other day and although it is taking some time getting used to, I think I will like it more then I do once I get used to it.
Anyhow I have a few questions to start off with. I did some googleing already but just want to make sure I understand a few things.
All though I did the BlackRa1n jail break thing and installed a few apps then it locked up and failed to turn on or something so I did the whole reload from itunes and now its all good. Anyhow.....
1.) It appears as if one can not run a program from the home sreen and have it run in the background while doing other things? Take the many SIP Clients I have played with in the last 48 hours. Once I open the SIP Client and connect if I hit the physical button below the screen the program closes, thus the sip client no longer works. Pretty much most if not all apps iv installed from the App Store act like this. Is this the case? Does the IPhone not mutitask at all or verywell?
2.) Are there any SIP Clients that work over 3G? All the ones iv tried say they are for WIFI only. The SIP Clients work fine when on WIFI. It sounds like this is Apples way of controlling/monopolizing the voice/data/voip aspect of the platform/device. Im sure they would lose a lot of money if everyone did what I am trying to do.Just my opinion.
3.) Maybe I play with it to much but **** the battery dies fast. Is there anyway to optimize the battery at all other then for me not to use it as much?
4.) How can I remote lock it if I lose it or it gets stolen? I read somewhere this could be done.
5.) Are there any other Shells/HomeScreens/Themes that can replace the standard 4x4x4 row icons?
6.) The speaker phone (when on a call) seems kinda low even when turned all the way up. Is there any way to make it louder?
7.) I am using the built in VPN client to connect to my works PPTP Windows 2003 VPN server but the client randomly disconnects through out the day. Is there any way to have some type of keep alive set or are there any other VPN Clients that I can use?
Sorry for all this just thought I would ask for feedback.
Many thanks for any help anyone can provide,

1.) It appears as if one can not run a program from the home sreen and have it run in the background while doing other things? Does the IPhone not mutitask at all or verywell?
The iPhone SDK does not permit ANY 3rd party apps from running in the background or multitasking. It does provide for push notifications which can simulate certain background activity in terms of receiving external notifications while the app is actually closed. This works reasonably well with IM apps, news, sports, weather, travel updates and some peer-to-peer games.
2.) Are there any SIP Clients that work over 3G? All the ones iv tried say they are for WIFI only.
Just how would the SIP server connect to the cell carrier 3G network? Do you know of ANY that do??
3.) Maybe I play with it to much but **** the battery dies fast. Is there anyway to optimize the battery at all other then for me not to use it as much?
3G voice and data connections are culprits. Avoid email push and frequent fetching. See this Apple article for detailed suggestions.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
4.) How can I remote lock it if I lose it or it gets stolen? I read somewhere this could be done.
MobileMe Find My iPhone will locate, set a passcode lock and optionally wipe all data from your iPhone. You have to be a MobileMe subscriber.
5.) Are there any other Shells/HomeScreens/Themes that can replace the standard 4x4x4 row icons?
No. Apple does not permit this.
6.) The speaker phone (when on a call) seems kinda low even when turned all the way up. Is there any way to make it louder?
You can troubleshoot your iPhone as described in the User Guide - restart, reset, reset settings, restore. Or, get hearing aids

  • Totally new to external hard drives and have a few questions

Since beginning my search for an external hard drive this morning I have learned that I know very little about this subject. I really have very little knowledge of all the computer lingo used when looking at these devices. I have a few questions regarding this, if someone could help me.
    1. Are all external hard drives compatible with my mac?
    2. Do I need time machine if I have an external hard drive?
    3. I have two PCs in addition to my mac. Can I use the same external hard drive for all three or would I need a separate one?
    Thanks for helping!

Use a Firewire not a USB drive.
I have had many reliability issues, and compatibility issues with USB over the years (starting with the original iMac), right up to the PowerMac G5 and Mac Pro - devices not working properly with hubs, needing to be plugged directly into ports on the computer (even though there aren't enough), etc, etc.
For me Firewire devices cause fewer of these sorts of problems.
Firewire is "isochronous", basically meaning that you can pump "clocked" data though it in real time. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency, that is, the wait for the data to be "put back together".) Second, the Firewire protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass storage) with minimal intervention of the CPU.
No collisions, no glitches. Firewire is rock-solid.

  • Just got a Macbook and have a few questions

Ok, so I just got my Macbook laptop today and because I have never owned a Mac product i just had a few questions
First off, is it safe to be plugged into the internet right off the bat or do I need to go out and buy some antivirus software? i have heard from some people that macs have built in antivirus and that they are also just in general less likely to get a virus then your average pc.
also just wondering, when i play a cd the disk reader/laser? whatever you would want to call it makes alot more noise then i expected it to. i didnt know if that was normal or not, and just wanted some opinions from other macbook users. thanks!!

On these forums, just about anyone you ask will say that there is no reason to get antivirus software. Most mac users don't have any installed. It's not viruses on the mac you really need to be worried about; it's stupid stuff like phishing or scams - things that don't have anything to do with the operating system - that you just have to watch out for. You'll be fine without antivirus software. The thing I really liked about my mac (windows user all my life; switched 6 months ago, haven't regretted it) is that instead of worrying about viruses and keeping my anti-virus/spyware software always up to date, I was just able to start using my mac, right out of the box.
They do make antivirus software for macs. If you really are that worried about it, go to:
    http://www.clamxav.com/
The ironic thing is that it checks for windows viruses (someone correct me if I'm wrong) so you don't pass them on. A windows virus won't have any effect on your mac.
Surf the net. Be productive. Stop worrying. Have fun. Welcome to Apple.
    ...not a bad little slogan
EDIT - wow, a million people posted while I was writing this reply. meh.

  • I am upgrading from 10.3.9 to 10.5 and have a few questions

I have a 17in iMac G5 1.6ghz currently running on 10.3.9, I have previously asked about how far I can upgrade the OS, and discovered it's to 10.5.
I have currently got 1x 1gb RAM memory and will be purchasing another chip to mirror this one.
I have tracked down a retail version of Tiger on amazon
I need an external hard drive to back up onto and have limited cash. I found the Western Digital 1tb My Book in the apple store for £89, which seems reasonable and my current tiny (and full) hardrive (which was a similar price when I bought it!) is the same make and has worked really well for me so far. My question is whether it will work with my computer in it's current state as it's system requirements say OS 10.4-10.6. Can anybody help me with this?
I know my actual question doesn't relate to installation but I couldn't think where else to post this.

Unanswer your question smallbean to attract some responses.
My contribution: ask the store that is selling the external whether it would suit your G5 Mac.

  • Overwhelmed... Just received my Y2P and have a few questions

Right out of the box and when I first turned it on, I had to provide them with my microsoft account in  order to complete the initial boot. WHY?!?!? Is there a way to avoid this?
Chrome - the tabs and address bar are TINY, how do I change it?
Each window opened on Chrome opens up at a 100% resolution but my goodness, font is so small. I have to increase the resolution to 200%
What happened to the taskbar on the desktop to switch between tabs and windows?!
I realize there is some sort of taskbarish thing on the left side but it's not the same. I have been having difficulties with that "taskbar" to respond at the first swipe with the pointer. Closing/signing-off apps is a new adventure as there are no Xs on the upper right hand corner. UGH!
Switching to the desktop is no easy feat. Don't know where to find the Control Panel.
I feel this laptop has a huge learning curve and I feel overwhelmed. HELP!!!
With the issues reported and the learning curve involed, I feel I should just move to the macbook air.... sigh!

It's evil. You have to click the "Create a new account" link and then at the bottom of the form for creating an MSN account is a little link that says "Sign in without a Microsoft account" and that will then let you create a basic local account with a username and password and no Microsoft MSN online rubbish.
The "tiny fonts and stuff" issue has been much discussed here. You can change the Windows display scaling to make everything bigger (though some applicaitons still have issues with this) or you can run the display at a lower resolution so that everything is naturally bigger. There are a number of threads on this topic.
Everything else is just standard "Windows 8 is evil how do I get it to behave like old windows??" complaints that everyone has  Apparently it IS possible to eventually get used to the Win 8 way of things but boy, is it frustrating at the start. One tip is that from the start screen you can just start typing and it will bring up the apps page and search box and most of everything is still there that you're familliar with (control panel etc.) you just have to search to find it.
There are inexpensive 3rd party utilities (from Stardock etc.) that give you back an old style Start button menu, and in 8.1 you can configure it to boot to the desktop instad of the Metro UI if you choose.

  • Oracle 9i R2 Installation on RH Linux 7.3 -- Have a few questions.

    Hello,
I am at the end of the Oracle 9i R2 installation and have a few questions.
    1) The "Agent Configuration Assistant" keeps failing. I get the following message.
    Parameters "orahome" = /opt/oracle/product/9.2.0
    Parameters "nodeinfo" = NODE_VALUE
    Agent Service Failed
What does this mean and how can I complete Agent Configuration Assistant install?
    2) I completed the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant successfully and created passwords for sys and sysoper (not sure if these were the exact users). Note I did not modify any other users or unlock them.
How do I log into the sqlplus prompt, what users should I use and how can I create new users and databases?
Thanks for your help in advance.
    Regards,
    Chris Barone
    [email protected]

    (1) You can probably just ignore the Agent Configuration (are you using the Agent to collect data?)
    (2) sqlplus '/ as sysdba' will log you into the SQL*Plus prompt.

  • Owners of the 80GB iPod classic, I have a few questions

Ok, so I got my 80GB black iPod classic today and have a few questions, one of these I will need you to check something on your classic.
1: Can you get the digital booklets from the albums purchased on the store on your classic?
2: Is it normal for the hard disk to make that noise when it's spooling?
3: I've noticed this, is there a slight delay switching to the "iPod" screen from the screen before it? I need some one to check this.

All hard disks make a bit of noise. The Classic uses a memory cache to allow it to stop the hard disk and thus save power. When you switch screens, the delay is due to the hard disk spinning up and/or searching for the next thing to display. In short, it's the price we have to play for 80/160Gb of space.

  • I have a creative cloud membership.  If I don't want to build a site in Muse, can I build a business Catalyst site and have hosted free with my creative cloud membership?

I have a creative cloud membership.  If I don't want to build a site in Muse, can I build a business Catalyst site and have hosted free with my creative cloud membership?

Yes you can! It is a Basic level site but you can build it without Muse. I think you may need to create the site originally with Dreamweaver or Muse (meaning creating the site with Business Catalyst not building the site) but once that is done you can use any software to create the code for the site and upload it via SFTP. Hope that makes sense.

  • I have just bought my first mac and have been told that i can get a free upgrade to lion but it seems that this is only an option in the us and canada, not the uk. is this true?

i have just bought my first mac and have been told in pc world that i can get a free upgrade to lion, but it would appear that this is only for those in the u.s. and canada. is this true? also from reading the discussions it seems that lion is not a good thing. i am already regretting my decision to go to a mac.

I have found that both Linux and Mac (unix) are capable of reading "deep" folders while win 32 will have issues, your it people are clearly wrong.  I run a network with both win/mac. And as long as the win servers/pc's that have shares are set to allow apple file sharing in their folder properties.   And the macs are set to allow smb there should absolutely no trouble with you accessing anything across the platforms, heck, from a Mac to a win pc on some occasions you don't even need to include a "domain" name to log on to, and you can create aliases and make your own shortcuts etc... So you don't have to manually connect each time you boot up etc... But that's all personal preferences I suppose.
All I can tell you is that, I do it on a daily basis managing a small business. So your answer is yes you can.

The apps I created from "add to homescreen" have turned white and have a few lines and circles in it. How can I get the picture back on them?

Those aren't apps; they're bookmarks to websites. Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears? If all else fails, you can just re-do the shortcuts.

  • Switching from PC - Have a few questions

I have read the forums and talked to AppleCare support and I have a few questions on the Mac Pro.
    1. I was told by Apple that using RAM other than the overpriced "Apple" brand would void the warranty (I typically use matched Mushkin or Crucial)- is there any point in getting the AppleCare insurance then?
    2. Appple told me that Western Digital Raptor 10,000 RPM HD's were not supported, yet I see a number of you use this drive - are you using a SATA adapter or putting it one of the 4 drive bays?
    3. Am I limited to Apple's Superdrive DVD/CD or will any ATAPI drive work?
    4. The graphics card situation is pathetic - does anyone know is there are planned updates before I spend $700 on 2 ATI 1900's to run 2 30" Cinema displays. Does Apple typically come out with new products at the same time each year?
    5. Does anyone know of software to control multiple monitors i.e. Designate virtual desktops on a specific monitor, or specify that Application A opens on monitor 1 while Application B opens on monitor 2?
Any help will be appreciated - Apple doesn't seem to be very forthcoming on these topics - I am still anxious to rid myself of the virus a day problem and Microsoft software that becomes slower and less productive with every revision.

    1. I was told by Apple that using RAM other than the overpriced "Apple" brand would void the warranty (I typically use matched Mushkin or Crucial)- is there any point in getting the AppleCare insurance then?
It won't void the warrantee (unless you damage the computer when installing it), but it won't be covered. If it goes for service, remove the non-Apple memory first (it's a good idea to do that first, anyway, to see if it fixes the problem).
    2. Appple told me that Western Digital Raptor 10,000 RPM HD's were not supported, yet I see a number of you use this drive - are you using a SATA adapter or putting it one of the 4 drive bays?
    Same as above.
    3. Am I limited to Apple's Superdrive DVD/CD or will any ATAPI drive work?
No. Most ATA (or SATA) optical drives will work.
    5. Does anyone know of software to control multiple monitors i.e. Designate virtual desktops on a specific monitor, or specify that Application A opens on monitor 1 while Application B opens on monitor 2?
Many application remember the last monitor they used. Some (e.g. Graphics Converter) have preference settings to put the main window on one display, the controls on the other. Some (e.g QuickTime Player, VLC have view settings to put the full screen output on a selected monitor.
