Building scenes in IMovie

Is there a way to build scenes in IMovie, then assemble those scenes into a final movie? I am working with over 100 clips and would prefer to combine related ones into small scenes rather than trying to organize them all in one timeline. (Apologies if this is duplicative. I posted the same question four hours ago, but there is no trace of it.)

Select the frames you want to delete. Then right-click/Delete Selection (or EDIT/Delete Selection). That works for Projects. You could also select Edit/Trim to selection. That trims off everything in the clip except what you have selected.
If you want to permanently delete some scenes from your event file, you use the reject tool, then move to the rejected clips view, and select move to trash.

  • Making an Indiana Jones like travelling scene with iMovie

    Hi,
is it somehow possible to make a travelling scene like in Indiana Jones? I am aware of the fact that there is the animated map solution build in iMovie but I don't like it much because:
    1) You cannot use any map but the ones Apple gives you there.
    2) Only straight lines between 2 destinations are possible and I like to use arbitrary paths or even a GPS file.
    So at a glance:
I would like to take an image file (which in my case shows a map), have an arbitrary path on it (which would connect 2 destinations) and animate the path to extend over time from start to the end. Does anybody know if this is possible with iMovie? If not, any suggestions what other program I could use?
    Thanks in advance
    Phil

    I made a quick 'n dirty demo:
    http://youtu.be/cdejMJyW17Q
    that is a 2min-done Motion5 Project:
    drag in the map
    drag in the plane
'paint' the route as a bezier
apply behavior to plane, follow that line
for cosmetics: turn to direction ...
the plug-in, Motion-Master Marc Spencer demoed, allows to customize all kind of parameters in FCPX - without installing/purchasing Motion.
Motion5 is a standalone app (=can be used as 'effect machine' for iMovie projects either), but is also 'the mother' for all sort of effects in FCPX. You can open any FCPX-effect in Motion5, or create effects to be used in FCPX. The daily growing list of free effects has its source here ...

  • Can I Integrate Keynote Build Slides Into iMovie?

It's me the Mac/iMovie newbie with another question...
Is there a way I can integrate a 'building' Keynote slide into an iMovie project?
Your help and/or direction is very much appreciated!

Thanks again AppleMan, will try this tonight!
Once I export to QuickTime, where do I find the QuickTime file, and how do I pull it into my project?
Apologies if this is a dumb question once again!
    Cheers!

  • Using single scene from iMovie/iDVD

Posted before, but let me try again. I created a movie in iMovie, broken down into chapters/scenes. The last scene was a slideshow, with effects and music. I exported it to iDVD, and burned it to disc, then archived the project. Now I wish to use the slideshow (i.e. last scene), intact, for something else. I would like to be able to copy/extract the last scene. Can this be done?
    Thanks.

    Thank you, John.
I downloaded Handbrake, did as you suggested, and boom, there it is in iMovie. Thank you so very much for your help. I've been wracking my brains about this for days.
This place is a wonderful resource.
    Take care.

  • How to split scenes in imovie 11

i recently purchased an 8-core intel based mac pro to gain the video processing power over my old mac pro.  Much to my dismay and frustration, the iMovie 6 interface that i had become extremely proficient at using was now completely different in imovie 11.  For example, the simple scene-split command, apple+T, no longer exists, at least to my endless hours of searching and cursing. I have imported hundreds of hours of 8mm and VHS tape and must figure out a way to be proficient again in 11. Or, figure out a way to run imovie 6 on my intel based mac. Either is acceptable to me. Please help!!!!!

You have to right click where you want to split the clip then select split clip

  • Blocky/Pixelated dark scenes in iMovie 11

    HELP!!
I ripped a DVD to my desktop at a pretty high quality using handbrake. It's a full-length movie weighing in at 3.35 GB. I then imported that movie into iMovie 11 so I could edit out some language. If I view the movie full screen from the Event Library section in iMovie 11 it looks fine. As good as the newly ripped version on my desktop. When I highlight the whole movie in the Event Library and drag it into the Project Library as a new project, it turns to garbage. Horribly pixelated dark scenes to the point that it is not even viewable. Thinking that this was just a problem with the preview window when viewed in full screen, I edited the video and burned it using iDVD. It burned just as badly as it looked in the Project Library. There must be something happening between the Event Library and the Project Library that is just killing the video quality. Any help/suggestions would be extremely appreciated.
Relatedly, is there anyway to edit a video using iTunes? It looks fine in that program.
    Thanks

However, you are still not going to like the results of your ripped MPEG Streamclip DV-video when imported into iMovie 09 or 11. The quality will get degraded by nature of the latest iMovie programs.
To keep the DV (non-pixelated) quality, and to export the same, you would need to use any of the following: Final Cut Express (for a bit of the "pro-sumer"), Adobe Premier Elements 9 (consumer video editor that is a lot like iMovie 06), or get your hands on the old iMovie 06.
Again, these are what are necessary to edit your ripped DVD and keep them looking as nice as the original.

  • Does anyone know when a Scene Builder update is going to be released?

This issue is driving me crazy.  Does anyone know when v2.0.1 of Scene Builder is supposed to be released?

The issue you linked to is marked as fixed.
You don't need wait for an official Scene Builder release (I have no idea when such a release may occur).
You can build Scene Builder from source and you will pick up the release.

  • Building a loader inside of a scene

    Hey Everyone
I have a quick question (I think). I have some old AS2 code
from a client that has a loader in scene 1 and the movie in scene
    2. I built and external loader in a separate SWF but they want the
loader, and movie to be in the same SWF but different timelines. I
figured I could build scene 1 with two frames. The first frame
would have this code on frame 1:
    pBar.width = (Math.round(this.bytesLoaded/this.bytesTotal) *
    100)
on frame 2 the code would be:
    if(this.bytesLoaded == this.bytesTotal)
    nextScene();
    else
    gotoAndPlay(1)
I figured I could use the timeline as a constant checker of
bytes, but it seems that every time it gets to the if statement it
halts, even though I have a else statement telling it to go back to
    frame 1
This is one of many combinations I have tried but no luck at
all. I am starting to think this is not possible. Any help would be
    appreciated.
    T.I.A

that isn't quite right in as2 and it's not right in as3. are
your publish settings using as2 or as3?

  • Opening imovie project from external hard drive

I get this message: The project “last duly noted” was saved with an older version of iMovie. Opening it in this version will cause it to be upgraded, which will make it unreadable by older versions. Are you sure you want to open it?
How can I edit this item?

Hi Harmless - I do not think that your problem has anything to do with the external drive. Your project must have been crreated on an earlier version of iMovie - iMovie 4 perhaps, and contained in a standard folder. It can be upgraded to an HD project - best to use a copy for this, just in case....!
When you upgrade, it will firstly be converted only partially into the new version, so you have to take another step to fully convert>
Here's a comment about what should happen:
"A project created by iMovie 5 is a special kind of folder called a package. It looks and acts like a file. The package contains all the files and folders you see, but they are all hidden inside the package. To open the project in iMovie you double-click on the package.
If your project looks like an iMovie 4 folder instead of a package — so you can easily see inside — my guess is it's probably a project you've converted from iMovie 4 to iMovie 5. Converted projects do not look or act like true iMovie 5 projects. They contain the same files/folders but are stored in a conventional folder, just like iMovie 4.
That's not necessarily a good thing, for a user can get inside too easily, and open the project by double-clicking on that tilde file. If you do that, iMovie opens the PREVIOUSLY-saved version of the project. And when you next save, iMovie creates a second tilde file. Then a third, then a fourth. It's all too easy for the user to get confused, open the wrong project file and create quite a mess.
So it's a good idea, after converting a project from iMovie 4 to iMovie 5, to do a Save As to save the project into a new project. Then iMovie 5 builds a true iMovie 5 project that looks and acts like a real iMovie 5 project. Lots safer, and it works better." (as described by Karl Petersen)
So, you should experience no problems if you follow that advice - go ahead and convert!

  • How do I get a copy of iMovie 9?

I reformatted my iMac hard drive with Lion. I restored from the downloaded version of Lion and therefore do not have iMovie on my system. I had upgraded to iMovie 9 but now it's not available in the App Store nor from iTunes. Does anyone know how I might get a copy of iMovie 9?

    Hi
iMovie 9 can mean different things - What do You need ?
    iMovie History 08, 09 & 11
NOT AN EVOLUTION FROM Previous versions but a totally new application.
    iMovie 08 (v7) 7.1.4 (aug 2007)
A new way of storing project and an event library as well
A totally new product in a pre-release state. Far from a working application.
    Lacks even basal functions
No Speed-up or down or reverse
    Lot’s of video-formats lacking
No cont. TimeLine - Bad logic
No good for interlaced SD-video from miniDV tape aimed to a DVD release.
(Discarding every second line makes quality as VHS in LP or EP mode = BAD)
NO - Playback via Camera/FW - and this prevents 100% safety-backups and the use of an extra TV/Monitor as real-time Quality control (as in iM 1 to HD6)
Color tools got much BETTER - nearly usable - even sort of a copy function
Direct share to .Mac and YouTube
More Cameras supported even AVCHD (need of Intel CPU)
Do not run on G4 or older - G5 minimum
    Need of 1.9 GHz G5-Mac,
(Can run on 1.8GHz G5 iMac if installed on external boot hard disk and speedier Mac - can’t install directly)
    Mac OS X.4.9 minimum
    QuickTime 7.2 included
Aimed at - speed editing small video projects to be presented on the Internet - NOT DVDs
    iMovie 09 (v8) 8.0.6 (jan 2009)
Far better than iMovie 08 but still far from good.
Pic in pic, green screen but rudimentary
Image stabilization - fairly good for amateur use
    Speed-up/down and reverse
    Bl/W, Old age etc
    Still - No Continuos TimeLine
NO - Possibilities to enhance by use of third-part Plug-ins (all investments lost)
NO - Playback via Camera/FW - and this prevents 100% safety-backups and the use of an extra TV/Monitor as real-time Quality control (as in iM 1 to HD6)
Aimed at - speed editing small video projects to be presented on the Internet - NOT DVDs
    iMovie 11 (v9) 9.0.x - 9.0.4 (2011 july)
Will be - Intel Only - Snow Leopard minimum Mac OS X.6.3
    YES:
Advanced view including a true TimeLine ? Yes but rudimentary (very basic)
True Story-board - where You even can write and prepare space for lacking material that needs to be obtained or re-shoot. YES
Better wave-form presentation of audio and audio tools - Rubber-band - Yes
    Trailer creating tool
”Faces” as in iPhoto - NO - but this finds if there are people in some video-clips
Better audio tools. Equalizer and a background audio reducer
    More Camera support e.g. 24fps
    NO
    not 64-bit only
The Playback to Camera via FW - returns ? NO
Full Quality to iDVD - NO - still only half - every second line - Questionable - Some indicates it to be able to loss-less Exports - Has to be proven
    Plug-in facility ? - NO
    No free text tool
Tool to mask an identity e.g.. band over face or un-sharp area. - NO (could be obtained via Plug-ins in iM HD6 and earlier)
Animation tool - To point on interesting object/player - NO animations refer to a totally different
thing connected to Story-board and insert of ”dummy animations” while building a movie
    iMovie 13 (v10) 10.0.x - 9.0. (2013 autum)
If iMovie'09 then You need the iLife'09 boxed CD-version.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Snow Leopard - will it kill iMovie HD?

I've got a question about Snow Leopard. Does anyone more tech savy than me know if installing Snow Leopard will brick iMovie HD ('06). I know it's old, but I've got a ton of themes and stuff for it and it just cranks out good video.
If you have a snow leopard build and also iMovie HD any help would be really appreciated.

    +Germans are so efficient!+ sometimes..
I just wanted to make clear, WHAT I could test within 30min..
I'm still a blockhead , using iMovie for video from real camcorders only .. (yepp, that is very German)
we will soon see the first posts complaining, using exotic media containers, 'filming rubber gums' and usage of not-so-public-alpha-builts-of-10.6. on G4s ..

  • IMove crashes

iMovie frequently crashes when I try to export my project from share and select File. This has been an on going issue ever since I updated to the latest OS. It has never been like this until I got the latest update. Version of iMove is 10.0.6 build 252905. OS V. 10.10-14A389, Mid 2010. Please help. I need my iMovie working now so I can finish a Thanksgiving surprise video. Thanks a lot!!!!
    Yoseph

I hope I am not too resource intensive with 42 photos
using Ken Burns and dissolve transitions with each
photo and having an opening reflection black theme.
My guess is it's not a resource problem. When exporting to QuickTime your Mac can take whatever time it needs, which lowers demands on resources.
You could try creating a new user account, building a new iMovie project with most of the same elements, and seeing if that behaves okay. If it does, that suggests a software conflict when YOU are the user.
One possible source of a conflict is third-party QuickTime add-ons and iMovie plug-ins. When experiencing crashes, remove all to see if it helps.

You haven't said... Are you running QuickTime 7.1.5? That fixes some bugs apparently. We've seen a number of reports of users with Intel Macs say problems went away with that upgrade.
Note that since your photos aren't huge you might do as well using a 720p project. Yours are having to be enlarged as they are imported to 1080i.
And if you want to save the disk space, turning OFF the Ken Burns checkbox will do no harm.

  • IMovies 11 is playing the wrong picture on the right thumbnails

    Hello
I've started to build projects with Imovies 11. On each of them I have the same problem when I insert a picture from Iphoto library
the thumbnails on the project is the right one, but when I play the movie, sometimes another picture is playing.
Sometimes the right one sometimes the wrong one. It seems random and I can't see any correlation to all of this.
Please tell me i'm doing something wrong, I can't believe that Apple can't handle a simple task like playing the right picture you put in your project
    Thanks for your help
    Problem onreported on:
MacBook Pro Intel Core I7 4Gb Ram
    IMovies 11 v 9.0.4 (1634)

There is no direct option of connecting these files but you can do this with some trick.  What you need to do is to select all the files in your catalog and select say Share->Email attachments. At this point, Volume Resolver dialog would pop up for connecting the offline files. Insert your removable drive of files and you can reconnect all.
    Hope this help.

  • Imovie to aperture export

    Hi,
I'm struggling with creating a multimedia slide show in aperture. Of course it's possible to import HD videos into aperture, but how can I import movies that I optimized in imovie before? The only way so far I found is to work on every scene in imovie, save it individually as an imovie project and export it into .mov to then open that one in Aperture - scene by scene.
I didn't find a way to create an imovie project and drag and drop individual scenes or clips to aperture.
    Any idea anybody?

Hi, and welcome to the Forums.
First, just in case there's another option for recovery, do you happen to know how the pictures we're accidentally lost?
As for recovering them from iMovie/iDVD:
You can download the free open source (and useful) VLC Media Player. www.videolan.org/vlc
Below is a link to a tutorial (scroll down past the Windows portion) to show you how to grab a frame from your .mov file used to create your DVD. The quality of the photo frame captured may likely be less than the quality of the original photo from your camera, but it's better than nothing and will probably still look fine when used in other slide shows, screen savers, on iDevices, etc.

  • IDVD Scene Question

In iMovie, I have my movie separated into 4 scenes.....how do I import the 4 scenes from iMovie to iDVD to play as one continuous movie?

Do you mean you have 4 separate movies? Or do you have one iMovie with 4 chapters using chapter markers?
If you have 4 separate movies, you can import them into iDVD as 4 individual movies, and they will play separately. If you want them to play continuously, you need to put them all into one iMovie, use chapter markers to mark the beginning of each 'scene' (except for th first one which iDVD will do automatically).
When you then import the long iMovie into your iDVD project you will see the options to 'Play Movie' and 'Scene Selection' where the viewer can opt to view the entire movie or choose to have it begin at a particular scene. Just as commercial DVDs do, the movie will play from that selection to the end.
If you want to have the movie play as a continuous movie AND have each scene play separately without continuing the rest of the movie, you will need to put 5 movies into iDVD: the 4 'scenes' and the continuous one.
