Building Small Network with Interconnected 2960Xs - No Connectivity

I am trying to create a network with a client connected to a 2960X, which connects to a second 2960X switch, which connects to a server. I have setup the switch connected to the client with an IP address of 10.0.1.1 for its vlan1. The second switch has an IP address of 10.0.2.1 set for its vlan1. I then interconnected the two switches using the GigabitEthernet1/0/1 interface in trunking mode on each switch. I was not able to ping the second switch, so I then configured the GigabitEthernet1/0/2 interface in access mode and connected the two switches. I am still not able to ping the second switch from either side.
What do I need to do to get this setup working? Should I be using a single VLAN that spans the two switches? Should I be using trunking or access mode for the interface that interconnects the two switches?

That is correct, each switch has only one vlan, vlan1.
Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.
Thanks, will change all interswitch connections to trunk. Will leave all host to switch connections at access.
Unfortunately, I cannot post the output as it is from a terminal that cannot be connected to the Internet or even the Intranet and USB storage is not permitted in the area, so I cannot copy the output into a text file on a USB drive. I would have to type everything out. If there are parts of the sections of these commands that may be show the issue, please let me know and I can type up those sections.
vlan interfaces are both up.

  • Advice for Building Small Network Question

    Hello,
I am building a small network environment which will connect to a larger office, scalability is important.  We will begin having about 30 users which will all need VOIP services.  The VOIP services will be hosted by a cloud provider.  My question is as of now I am looking to obtain a Cisco 2921 ISR Router and then a Cisco 2960-X 48Gig POE, and my main question is I am confident the switch can handle the power and operation of the phones but just to make sure I should not run into any problems with the router as far as forwarding the data, correct?  Any other comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Joe

  • Building a network with MAC and windows computers.

    Hi.
Please advice how to build a network where the different computers can interact and be seen.

Since your question is extremely broad and lacking in detail...
In simple terms, get a router and connect the computers to the router. Enable file sharing on the computers you want to be seen by the others.

  • Building a small network with Windows 7 machines

This isn't necessarily Premiere or even video-related, but hopefully some of you hardware/networkin gurus can offer a bit of advice...
I've been using my ISP's rather cob-job DSL/hub/WAP for awhile, with my two workstations cabled to it, and my laptop accessing it wirelessly. I frequently push files between the systems, but, since the hub is only 100Mbit ethernet, and the WAP is 11g, shoving large files around is an exercise in mind-numbing patience. On the software side, I just click a bunch of buttons until the various systems show up as accessible on the others--I really have no idea what I'm doing in this regard.
I've got a GigE switch on the way, with enough Cat6 cable to connect all the computers directly to the switch, and then to the DSL modem, so at least the networking between my systems will be far faster. However, I'm still in the dark as to the best way to actually establish the network on the software side of things. How should I set up shares between the systems? I don't have a NAS yet--that'll be a later investment--so I need to be able to drop files from System #1 on System #3, etc. I've tinkered around with the Windows 7 "HomeGroup" funtionality, but that seems like it's more designed to easily set up swapping of music and documents and things like that.
Another consideration is that my laptop usually goes with me to various remote locations, where I either plug in to a cabled network, or access it wirelessly. How can I maintain some semblance of security, both at home and in the field, without unnecessarily hobbling the connection?
I appreciate any insight and advice you guys might have. Thanks!

    Colin,
I have three servers, 01 and 02 and an ESX server. Two run plain vanilla Win2008 Server, the last one runs ESX/VMWare and Win2008 Server. They are physically miles apart but connected over a VPN. All local machines are either cable connected with Gb Netgear unmanaged or HP managed switches and the routers at both sides are Draytek Vigor 2820 Vn ADSL2+ modems or they are wirelessly connected over 801.11n.
Some local machines are part of a domain, others are not.  Whenever one starts a machine, they are automatically logged in, using a vbs script, and the networked drives are automatically connected. Some of these drives are local, others are over the VPN connection.
This gives me the following drives on my video machine:
but gives me the same networked drives on all other machines.
One thing to note, drive K, named 'harm' contains My Documents. This is automatically synchronized with my notebook, so I can access all of My Documents when I work off-line and they are automatically synchronized when I get back on-line on the network. The same applies to my wifes My Documents and my daughter's and my son's files, all using active directory.
Furthermore all networked drives are backed-up daily over the VPN to a NAS. To add to that, my daughter in Switzerland can connect to the servers here over a VPN so she can access our files here.
The only thing you do not yet have is a dedicated server running Win Server 2008 and possibly Exchange Server 2010. That would make your life a bit easier. For example, I only have Office on my notebook, but sometimes need to check my mail on my video machine. Using Exchange Server and OWA (Outlook Web Access) I can easily consult my mail on my video machine, send, reply or forward without having Outlook installed.
Check your PM for a graphical representation of my network.
Sharing with two PC's on the same switch seems like the most down-to-earth approach that will do what you need initially. Forgive me for not remembering all the gory details, but this network here has been in operation for over 5 years now and is a bit beyond what you want to achieve now. Just set sharing and it should work.
If you have difficulties, let me know and I will ask my son (MCITP, MCSE, MCSA, MCP, MCDP, etc.) what your best approach is.

  • Building home network with wifi roaming

I live in a new apartment building which means a lot of concrete. The internet (fiber) enters the house at the beginning where the modem is hooked up to my Linksys WRT320N. From there two cables run through the house:
1 to the home office, where two computers are connected through a switch
1 to the living room, where the Xbox, blueray player are connected through a switch
I also have a wifi network running from my WRT320N, but as it is at the beginning of the house, there are some black spots in other parts of the house. I tried to fix this with a Netgear repeater, but that keeps disconnecting.
What I want to do know is place a second linksys device in the living room at the end of the already existing cable that will also broadcast a wifi network, but I want this to be exactly the same wifi network as I already have. What I want to achieve is that I can walk from one end of the house with my iPad, streaming a video, to the other end of the house and that I always stay connected to the internet and that my tabled just picks up the strongest broadcaster, basically the same as with a mobile phone.
I hope this makes some sense and that somebody can tell me what device I should buy.

As the scenario that you explained according to that you can go for RE1000 depending upon the distance. The RE1000 is meant to extend the range of an 802.11n network. While the device has the ability to extend the signal for a traditional 802.11g router, still it is not recommended. The reason for this is because the RE1000 is built to extend 2.4 Ghz 802.11n signals which use MIMO as well as other advanced technologies, if attempting to extend a G network you will not achieve the desired performance because it is not optimized to extend standard 802.11G signals.
Remember that the RE1000 will only extend the 2.4Ghz frequency. Meaning that if you have a router that is dual band you can only use an extender on the 2.4Ghz channel. The 5 Ghz channel does not currently have an Extender available for it. Since some dual band routers have the ability to select which frequency you want activated. Always make sure 2.4 Ghz is enabled if you are having troubles configuring.
Lastly and most importantly, remember that in order to get the best performance from an RE1000 you need to place the extender in an area where you still have at least 50% signal strength to your router when you place it in the final location where the RE1000 will be used. To configure the RE1000 you will need to login to the UI after you have put the RE1000 in the final location to verify the signal strength below is a reminder about signal bars and what they mean as a reminder
For ALL configurations you should have between 2-3 bars of signal at the very least. If you have less we will need to move the RE1000 closer to the router. You can also check the status on the status page of the RE1000 as well. On the status page it measures both Signal Strength and Signal Quality. If either set of bars is red you must move the RE1000 closer to the Router.

  • Too small network with AirPort Extreme

I've installed an AirPort Extreme, extended by an AirPort Express, to connect with our cable modem and improve our wireless reception; we now get a strong signal throughout the house.  But with our 7 wireless devices (2 MacBook Pros, 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, and a Kindle Fire), we rarely are successful in logging on more than two of the devices at a time.  For a third or fourth device the icon will merely churn away.  This doesn't fit my idea of a network.  What should I do to improve the situation?

... My question is. If I work with an iPhone, the AE is going to work just with g forcing to TC to work with g as well with the rest of the equipments
The answer is yes, but I believe you can avoid that by having the iPhone connect only to the new dual band TC. Configure *everything else* to run an 802.11n network exclusively - not "802.11n (b/g compatible)". This way the iPhone will be unable to connect to that network, causing it to run in the slower b/g compatible mode. Your iPhone will work fine, as long as it remains within range of your TC's 802.11g wireless network.
Remember that you will need to change all your equipment's settings: the Extreme, the Express, the TC, and maybe the AppleTV.
Galt's rule of networking: "The number of problems you encounter increases exponentially with the number of devices on your network."
    So... proceed methodically.
The new TC is very close to AppleTV but wirelessly. Will I increase the speed for watching movies which are placed at TC (through external disks connected to the USB in the new TC) if I connect the TC to AppleTV using an ethernet cable?
The speed will be limited by the slowest link in your network chain. A wired network is always preferable, since it cannot be affected by interference or obstructions.
If you are streaming movies from the Internet, your wireless link will probably be the limiting factor.

  • How to extend range of my wireless network with an Airport Express connected by ethernet with Airport Utility 6.0

    Hi everyone,
I have AirPort Express 802.11n (1st Gen) firmware 7.6.1, that is connected to my main wifi base station (a TimeCapsule) by ethernet. I would like to extend the range of the Wifi Network but am not clear on how to do so using the new interface of Airport Utlity 6.0.
Does anyone have any tips on how to do this?
    BR
    AK

    Hi Everyone!
Many thanks for the tips. I have downloaded 5.6 and have set my Airport Express in the "Extend a wireless network" mode. I was still having a few problems with the quality of the wifi connection in different parts of my apartment (by no means a very large one, but walls seem to be made of extra dense concrete here in Singapore) and went out and bought a few powerline adapters by TP Link (http://www.tp-link.sg/products/details/?categoryid=1862&model=TL-PA211#spec).
If you don't mind a slightly long post, I would be very grateful for any tips:
My setup is now as follows:
    Main room
Time Capsule - connected to a Cisco DPC3925 Modem (http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/support/modem_DPC3925.html) both connected to a TP Link adapter 1.
iMac - connected via Ethernet to TP Link adapter 2 and wifi enabled
Airport Express 1 - connected by Ethernet to TimeCapsule (and thus TP Link adapter 1) used to stream audio to a stereo that doesn't have an optical cable input. Since it is an Ethernet connection, I have wifi turned off.
Apple TV 1 - connected by Ethernet to TimeCapsule (and thus TP Link adapter 1)
    Bedroom A
Airport Express 2 - connected via ethernet to TP Link adapter 3
    Bedroom B -
Apple TV 2 - connected by Ethernet to a TP Link adapter 4
After following the tips on setting up the extended wifi network, I find that when I use a wireless client (e.g. iPad, Macbook air, etc) in either Bedroom B or Bedroom C (both don't have wifi in the room) the connection is very poor. Even more odd is that the connection in Bedroom A, one that does have Airport Express 2. To be clear when I mean very poor, I mean Skype/facetime skips frames and freezes... this doesn't happen when I am in the main living area.
I would be very grateful for tips on how to set up the most robust network given the configuration above. Specifically, I am wondering about:
When I select Extend a wireless network option on Airport Utility 5.6 the summary page states that it is connecting using "Wireless Network" vs what I would expect it to say "Ethernet connection".
Is there any advice on whether to enable 5Ghz network and if so, should I try to use that for the various wifi clients?
Does anyone know if I can somehow use Apple products to extend the reach of the Cisco DPC3925? Frustratingly the signal is quite strong (compared to Apple routers), but I cannot properly stream audio/video if that wifi network is used (as my iMac that hosts the content is on the Apple one... and I'd have to walk over to switch it to the Cisco one).
Any other tips would be much appreciated!
    Cheers!

  • Can you run a small network with different versions of OSX?

Snow Leopard has been freezing on me over and over, but I have hesitated to upgrade until we had a home finance program that worked on later systems. We have three Macs on wireless network (Airport Extreme)-- can I jump two versions of OSX on mine and test it out before upgrading the rest, or does it need to be all or nothing?
I have an 2007 metal iMac.

  • Best setup for a small iMac network with NAS?

    Hello all,
Any recommendations on how to setup a small network with 3 machines and mutiple users?
We run a design studio and currently have 3 x 27" iMacs with a couple of laptops that come and go, that all connect to a Synology DS213 NAS drive. (All the iMacs are connected to the NAS via ethernet through a gigabit switch, so we have a reliable connection)
All 3 machines have just had their HD's replaced (all backup up to the NAS) and are currently blank canvases - so I'm keen to get a decent network system up and running that works well in conjunction with the NAS drive. They're all running 10.6.8, but I'm happy to put them on Mountain Lion and install OSX server. It seems most feedback isn't great, but I'm interested to hear any ideas,
    Thanks in advance..

Rick may be right because although i didnt think of it before i tend to have notoriuosly long classnames for my php classes and i have used samba on occasion (when rsync is out of the question for one reason or another) and never had a problem. I use kubuntu (feisty at the moment )with an ext3 filesystem. if i have a chance this evening ill give it a try and see what happens.
You could also possibly use FUSE to use an ssh filesystem for the shares... i don tknow how that would figure in your back up though.
Also if worse comes to worse you could tar or dmg the the necessary files... just some thoughts.
Ill be interested to know what you end up implementing....
OH one last thought... Compile Darwin from source and use that as your server

  • Help in creating a small network

I just bought a TC and I want to make a small network with two Airport Express boxes that I already had. Right now the TC is connected and working, but I have also connected the two AE but I can not make them show in Airport utility, when
I reset one of the AE it shows in Airport utility but I can not make any changes.
I have TC set to "Create a wireless network", is this correct? I want to extend my network, can someone please guide me step my step, I am illiterate about Networks
    Thank you

Ok, since you will be using a mix of 802.11n & 802.11g base stations, your only option will be to create a WDS to wirelessly extend the range of your TC.
Here are the basic steps to set it up:
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. Also, jot down the AirPort IDs for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS.)
o Perform a "hard" reset on the Time Capsule (TC) and a "factory default" reset on the 802.11b/g AirPort Express Base Stations (AX).
Main Base Station Setup - TC
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the TC.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the TC, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base
    Station menu.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the AX.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - AX #1
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the AX #1.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the AX, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the WDS Main field.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.
Relay Base Station Setup - AX #2
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar to join the wireless network created by AX #2.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select AX #2, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the TC from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS relay” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the TC in the Main AirPort ID field.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of AX #1.
o Click Update to transfer the new WDS settings to the relay and remote base stations.

  • Small Network Issue

I have a small network with Time Capsule TC and two Airport Express bases AX.
Everything seems to be working fine, but it makes me crazy to see the Status light of the AXs blinking constantly.
In Airport utility all the base stations show Green Status light, but in the actual AX bases the Status light is blinking yellow, it has wireless Security WAP2.
In other words: what can I do to have AX light solid green?

    If your network configuration is:
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN] AEBS > (wireless) > Macs, then
AirPort Extreme Base Station Setup (AEBS) w/High-Speed Cable Modem
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the Cable modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)
Perform a "hard" reset of the AEBS.
    - (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)
    Setup the AEBS
With the network components powered down, set up the AEBS, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Create a closed network (unchecked)
    - Wireless Security: Not enabled
    - Channel: Automatic
    - Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    - Connect Using: Ethernet
    - Configure: Using DHCP
    - WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (checked)
    - Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)
Once you verified that you can get Internet access for all of your computers, you should secure your wireless network. To do so, I suggest that you make these changes:
    AirPort tab (optional)
    - Create a closed network (checked)
    Change Wireless Security
    - Wireless Security: WPA Personal
Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
    - Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)
    Wireless Options
    - Transmitter Power: 10%
    Access Control tab (optional)
    - + <add the computer(s) that will access this wireless network>

  • Help setting up small home network with PC and an imac!!!?

I have an imac in my room, and my mother has a JP PC in her room across the house. We have a router and modem on her computer(I connect to the internet through the router signal)
I just recently bought a new printer. It is a wifi printer. I was told by a friend that I need to setup a small netowrk so all the computers/printers in the house can talk to one another. Because right now my printer is installed and connected to the router signal (but my computer does not reconize it to print....)
I started a small network on my moms PC...but when I can't make a network CD like it tells me to because my computer is a Mac....how do I continue to setup this network? Can I set it up first on my mac as well???PLEASE HELP! I want to use my printer!

You can just connect the WRT54G wireless router’s LAN port to BEFSR41 router’s LAN port by using a network cable as specified in this configuring wireless router as access point article, after that can connect other computers to that wireless router with or without cable. Finally do more test to check the performance. Hope it helps.
