Building Thumbnails is taking soooo long

When I first went to open iMovie '08, I'd just finished filming a pair of high school basketball games, and had loaded them into iPhoto. It said it needed to build the thumbnails, and gave me a choice of doing it "now" or "later". I chose to do it now, and proceeded to wait for the next 90 minutes as it ostensibly built the thumbnails. I fiddled around for a bit, then closed iMovie, intending to get back to it later. The next time I opened iMovie, it had to build the thumbnails again! Now these two games fit onto one 4GB SD card. We're not talking about several hundred gigs of video here. Am I honestly going to have to wait for upwards of 90 minutes EVERY TIME I go to use iMovie? Is there a way to save the thumbnails? Help!

Dan, I feel your pain. Plug in an external hard drive and the program launches into generating thumbnails. Import a second clip from a camera and it generates thumbnails from that clip AND clips already imported! This insane waste of time has ruined this program! I am back to a much older copy of imovie. That is the only way I have figured out how to get a simple movie made quickly! Wasn't that the point, Apple?

  • Why is Migration Assistant taking soooo long?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 13". I decided to transfer most of my stuff from my old iBook G4. I tried to use a firewire cable but MA said "Mac OSX is not installed on your old Mac." Huhhh? That machine has never seen anything but OSX...
So I use an ethernet cable directly between the two computers. That works. Except that it is taking INSANELY long. I am only transferring about 30 gigs and it has been going for 6 hours and says it will need 8 more! What can possibly take so long??? When I transfer files over my network using the same cables, 30 gigs takes maximum 30 minutes I think....
    Thanks,
    Bo

Okay a few things here - first if you're using mavericks on both machines you don't need to do anything with target disk mode. Just using migration assistant on both machines connected by thunderbolt is enough.
Second, I have a 2011 MacBook Air and it does have a single thunderbolt port. Pre-2011 may have been the mini display port.
Finally, and the reason I stumbled onto this, the thunderbolt connection works wonderfully fast but there's some kind of bug in migration assistant that defaults to the wifi connection if both machines are connected to the network, even if you have a thunderbolt cable connected. I'm transferring a 2011 MacBook Air to a new rMBP and just discovered this issue. I connected with the thunderbolt cable, it estimated around an hour for about 80gb of data then inched closer to 36 mins as the estimate.
At some point along the way though migration assistant decided wifi would be better and the estimate jumped to over 20 hours. I unplugged my router (only solution for me once both machines had migration assistant running) and it seamlessly defaulted back to thunderbolt where the estimate cut back down to 30ish minutes.
The thunderbolt cable being worth the extra money or not is I suppose a matter of opinion but for me it's got plenty of other uses to justify the price and certainly made this transfer a lot faster. I just wish migration assistant wouldn't default to wifi without any kind of indicator.
So I assume too late to help you out but hopefully someone will see this and fix this bug and maybe it'll be helpful to someone else as it's still an issue as of right now.

  • Why is converting taking soooo long...any help

its taking like 4 hours to convert a 75 min. movie to mpg4

Welcome to the world of video editing. A 75-minute movie is a pretty large file, and it has to convert every frame from one format to another. Depending on the format you're converting from and the format you're converting to, the process can be fast (if you're converting from a relatively uncompressed format, which is highly unlikely I imagine) or slow (if you're converting between MPEG-4 standards or other fun stuff).
Best thing you can do is find a book to read or something else to do while letting your computer sit and do the conversion work. The less strain you're putting on it with other tasks, the faster it'll convert (so close all the other programs that are running that you don't need, as well).

  • UPDATE taking too long

    Hi everyone,
I have a small problem with a simple update statement that takes more than 15 minutes to execute. I really don't understand why it's taking that much. I'm using Oracle 10g (release 5).
    Here is the statement:
    EXPLAIN PLAN FOR
         UPDATE local_persons a
            SET a.is_deleted = '1'

                             WHERE a.person_id = z.person_id

    LOCAL_PERSONS     10     48770     622     74     09/11/11
    SELECT table_name, pct_free, num_rows, blocks, avg_row_len, last_analyzed

    WHERE table_name = 'REMOTE_PERSONS_MV';
    REMOTE_PERSONS_MV     10     48766     896     114     09/11/11I know that pct_free is not computed in statistics.
Does anyone have any idea about why is it taking soooo long??
    Thanks,

You could also try to change the query so that instead of a NOT exists you do an IN + left join.
Looking at the execution plan the optimizer already seem to be doing this, but I might be mistaken. I just wonder where the second table access to local_persons is coming from.
Also important might be how many rows are already marked as deleted. Your select each time reconsiders those rows, without any need to do so. This might take much time. I added "a.is_deleted = '0' " in the next example.
    untested
    UPDATE local_persons a
    SET a.is_deleted = '1'
WHERE a.is_deleted = '0' /* might be IS NOT NULL expression, depending how your column is filled */
AND a.id in ( /* here we build a list of IDs to be deleted */
      select p2.id
      from local_persons p2
      left join remote_persons_mv z on p2.person_id = z.person_id and p2.institution_code = z.institution_code
      left join cf_additional_persons ap on ap.person_id = p2.person_id and ap.transform_type = 'CREATE'

  • HT4736 Taking too long (2 minutes) to locate and download photos into Photo '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD).  I checked and repaired HD permissions. Any ideas?

Regarding iPhoto '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD).  I am dealing with iPhoto taking too long to download photos.  Specifically, I rechecked and repaired HD permissions. I am running the most current software my five year old Intel MacBook Pro can run.   What happens is that when I connect an external SD card, or my iPhone, the new version of iPhoto takes up to two full minutes to fully acknowledge the device. Then locate new photos and be ready to download them to my external HD.  I am kind of concerned about this.  This has never happened before.
I take 20,000 photos a year.  I really don't want to lose any.  Or is there something I am doing wrong?  Or need to be aware of?  Any experienced suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.  Have a great day.
PS.... The cameras I use are Canon SX-30, Nikon D3100, and my iPhone 4S.  Thanks again for your assistance.

Hello Old Toad.... Those sound like great ideas.
I thought I checked and repaired disk permissions on my main boot HD.  That boot disk is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  Capacity 749.3 GB.  Available 562.53 GB.   BUT.... now that I think of it.... the Seagate external HD with USB2 interface is: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Capacity 639.79 GB, Available 36.2 GB with my latest iPhoto Library 517.37 GB that was already scanned & updated to be read by the latest iPhoto version.
I'll try your suggestions tonight as far as double checking 'permissions' and setting up a tiny test library.
Or maybe it's time to fill up another External HD?
I appreciate your and anyone else's suggestions to try.
Have a great day. ~~ David in Rochester NY

  • Time to build thumbnails on import?

I am new to Aperture, and have just imported my photo library of 19000 photos into Aperture as referenced files. I know they are referenced because I have the little arrow bottom right.
I have the preview pref set to not build previews for new projects. I also have the "maintain previews for this project" unchecked.
The actual import took an hour or so during which it said "importing" next to the cog wheel at the bottom of the window.
Now it says "thumbnails" in the same place, and has been doing this for a couple of hours now.
At this point the library is 8 Gb in size but I have no idea how far through the thumbnail building it is.
I am a bit surprised at the size, since there shouldn't be any previews, and also how long it is taking to build just thumbnails.
Does what is happening sound correct? How big should a 19K library with no previews be? and how long would you expect the thumbnail building to take?
I am doing this on my Mac Pro, BTW.
    Thanks for any input.
PS (edit). When I scroll through the entire 19000 by having the cursor on the top project level in the projects window, the thumbnails appear extremely quickly.
Also, I assume that if it is building previews instead of thumbnails, it would say "previews" next to the cogwheel?
Message was edited by: Mike Boreham

Just discovered the "show Activity" window, which shows that it is building thumbnails (not previews) and that it has 6000 more to do.
So that probably answers my own questions, unless anyone has any insights, for which I would be very grateful.

  • E-MU USB 0404, what the hell is taking so long with Windows 7 drivers?

Windows 7 beta was out ages ago, the RC has been out for some time.
    WTF is taking so long?
Someone want to tell the developers I have a $200 USB audio device that I can't use with my operating system and to get off their lazy asses and put at least a beta out there.
    Ridiculous.

Woah simmer down. Have you tried using the Windows Vista drivers? I was informed that the Vista drivers are working well in the final version of Windows 7.
No they're not. They function but they're not working well. ASIO is OK, but try using Media Player for more than 5 minutes (Win 7 build 7100 x64, AMD Phenom x2/910, Asus MB) and you get timing glitches, sometimes the sample rate/bit depth gets crushed for 5 or 10 seconds. It's like listening to a dirty CD that keeps skipping slightly. Also, the sound just dies at reandom intervals, necessitating a switch in the windows control panel from 16 to 24 bit or back again to get it to 'wake up'.
The Vista drivers are 18 months old. Although the Win 7 driver model is similar to Vista it's not the exact same, or other companies wouldn't be bothering to put out Win7 drivers. Other companies...whose hardware I am much more likely to buy instead of Emu/Creative next time (even though I have purchased multiple 1820s and 0404s for myself and clients over the last 5 years). Heck, even the Creative consumer cards have beta Windows drivers. Someone at Emu needs a kick in the pants and today it's you, I guess.
'Problem? What problem?' is not support. It's the voice of failure.

  • Oracle - Query taking too long (Materialized view)

    Hi,
I am extracting billing informaiton and storing in 3 different tables... in order to show total billing (80 to 90 columns, 1 million rows per month), I've used a materialized view... I do not have indexes on 3 billing tables - do have 3 indexes on Materialized view...
at the moment it's taking too long to query the data (running a query via toad fails and shows "Out of Memory" error message; runing a query via APEX though is providing results but taking way too long)...
Please advice how to make the query efficient...

    tparvaiz,
Is it possible when building your materialized view to summarize and consolidate the data?
Out of a million rows, what would your typical user do with that amount data if they could retrieve it readily? The answer to this question may indicate if and how to summarize the data within the materialized view.

  • Aperture 2.1.4 Hangs On Building Thumbnails

I have Aperture 2.1.4 and everytime I open a specific project (the one with the most images...800+) it hangs building thumbnails. I've tried the "check library consistency" but during Running VACUUM On Database it never gets past the 80% area on the progress bar. I let it go for at least 4 hours but that's as far as it goes. Any thoughts?

    I would work my way through the steps listed on the Aperture 2: Troubleshooting Basics page;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2945
Not necessarily in that order though,
    Delete Preferences,
Disk Utility, repair Permissions & Repair Disk
    Consistency Check
    Re-build LIbrary
Depending on the size of your library you need to expect that it may well take a lot longer than you have allowed, typically leave it to work until complete, it may well sit at 80% for hours.

  • IPhoto import taking too long in processing

I purchased Aperture recently and am in the process of migrating my iPhoto library to Aperture 3.1.3. My iPhoto gallery is about 102GB with mostly photos but some videos (the originals folder is about 85GB).
I started importing the entire iPhoto library to Ap3 and it took about 48 hours to complete (ie when Ap3 showed "import complete" dialog). Soon after that, however, Ap3 started processing photos and that has taken a really long time (on its third straight full day as of today). I've a MBP 2.66GHz Core i7 with 8GB of RAM. Ap3 has continuously taken about 150% of the CPU and about 1G of RAM. It seems to be building thumbnails and filling in the previews for each project, etc. While this is going on, however, Ap3 is almost never responsive. And, while I see all of my iPhoto photos in the Ap3 masters folder, it don't see many of them in the Ap3 UI under projects (this used to have named events in iPhoto). I realize Ap3 maybe creating the Projects, etc. The masters folder is the same size as iPhoto's originals folder. The Ap3 library is growing slowly over time (about .5GB/day).
When I  click on the "processing" text on the bottom-left, a dialog showing "processing xxxx   ### of ###", where xxxx is the name of the photo (or video) and #### of #### are the how many photos it has processed including this one and the total number of items, respectively. After three full days (72+ hours) of processing, it's not even 20% done yet based on the numbers (Ap3 gives no percent complete status) and there are many more of these queued that I don't even see numbers for (see attached image). So at this rate, my Ap3 library, not to mention my MBP, isn't going to be available to use for another two weeks at the very least.
So, my questions is. Has something gone wrong in my import or is this expected. Is there another, faster approach at this point (seeing how much time I've already invested on this). One of my main reasons for migrating to Ap3 is being able to use multiple libraries with sync, etc. My iPhoto library was becoming unmanageable. I am beginning to worry if Ap3 is any better. Should I've imported each (or groups of) project(s) one at a time?
    Thanks

Yes, it takes forever. Or it seems like it. Aperture does a whole lot of background stuff - generating preview thumbnails and such in the background, and for a library like yours it's going to take weeks. The good news is that you don't need to leave it running all the time - it'll do it in the background while you can have it open, and eventually it'll get caught up.
As for breaking it up into smaller, more manageable libraries, hopefully someone with more experience along these lines will chime in.

  • Why is the game taking so long to download

when i purchased deus ex: human revolution from the mac app store it kept saying error occured and then it started to download and now it is taking too long to download the finishing time says 6-8 hours i have tried restarting the download but it is still taking too long what should i do?

How much RAM do you have?
You might want to build it out to the max.
Macs are not gaming consoles, as such are not maximized for such use. They are computers, not gaming consoles, that is not to say they can't play games. Just understand that they will generate more heat and if you are using a game that is using a high number of CPU/GPU cycles, you may have to use an additional cooling apparatus.

No, I don't have a firewall, and it's not because of my internet provider - I have AT&T at work, and Comcast at home. My husband can see the site on his laptop. I tried dumping my cache in both Firefox and Safari, but it didn't work. I looked at it through proxify.com, and can see it that way, so I know it works. This is so frustrating, because I used to only see it when I typed in artisancandies.com - it would never work for me if I typed in www.artisancandies.com. Now it doesn't work at all.
