Building vs. Buying Desktop

How much money would I actually save building my own desktop vs. buying one? I am leaning towards just buying one from someone.
What is the popular opinion as far as who to buy a desktop from?
I am looking for a decent machine that I can smoothly edit DSLR footage on and take advantage of PP (mercury engine, etc), AE, decent graphics card, ram, and hard drive configuration.... I am also looking for the best bang for my buck! (poor college student)
Thanks.

Hi,
thanks for the reply. i have always tried to be as transparent as possible.
Eric left out a good chunk of what what happens with labor. i think people have this idea we slap a bunch of parts together and ship it. here is a good look at how a system is processed and the labor behind it.
if we could do what most box builders do (remove the testing/installing/support etc) our labor would be much less.
in order of how it happens
Sales Rep (often the same guy who QA's)
Order processing
Parts pulled and put into the line up
System builder, on average a builder builds 7-10 systems a week (we have 3 full time plus others who can jump in) sytem is burned in tested/benchmarked
QA this is where hardware and software are installed system is checked for integrity, tweaks etc burned in again, benchmarked actual footage ingested/edited looped back
Shipping/receiving
Support
Repair (rare but it happens) about 12-20 a yr out of about1200ish
Building upkeep  (cleaning etc)
now to answer your post.
Marketing budget: lol there is none. word of mouth is by far the best advertising a person can have. i have never liked advertising nor seen it work very well. add to that we are not "marketing" people. we are computer geeks.
i spent a small fortune a few yrs ago running full page ads in a video editing mag. $3000 for the back page and $2000 for inside. i did it for 11 months i think maybe 10. it was the one and only time i ever did print addvertising and i wont ever do it again. the number of sales didnt even pay for the advertising. At best if was an exrecise in branding? (or bleeding money)
we come up really well in google searches (real not paid for) been down that road as well. used to spend $1000+ a month on google ads until i realized we were showing up in real searches at or close to the top along with the paid ones..
yet so few people find us.
The other side to this is i dont really want to grow this company too fast or for that matter too big. Big means you start to lose sight of whats inportant (the client) and enjoying your job.
Years ago i knew every clients name and often something about them, now orders come accross my desk (yes i see every one) and i have no clue who they are, what they do etc. its nice to grow but i do like that personal touch.
Our website is basically our advertisement. I am pretty much the one who does all that (you can see i am not the best at it) and i dont like doing "marketing glitz" (drool factor if you will)
i do have some very smart employees who are far better at graphics/photoshop/AE than i am thank goodness.. but have yet to really get them working at it.
on the front page there is a link "why Us?" http://www.adkvideoediting.com/whybuy.cfm
seems you missed it like like most do. i can tell as when i inform a client we will install your Decklink card and Adobe software (that you already own) for free they usually are shocked.
we have agonized over the main front page for yrs and how to present.. untold make overs since 98, had flash got rid of flash etc etc.
its hard to market to the beginner, to the higher end clients plus Govt/EDU and still show we sell more than just computers.. not sure we will ever find the right balance.
i do think of our competition for NLE systems we do have the best site and its easy to navigate.
no one has the system configurators we have with the options we have.
i have talked to a few marketing people and no one gets what we do! not enough to convice me to spend $
Credit card Fees: yeah its just part of doing biz. the average is 4% anymore. you know all those rewards cards you have (i got em too) well guess who pays for your rewards. it aint the bank!
95% of our individual or small corp clients pay by CC. the vast majority of Govt/EDU large corp pay by check/ACH and takes forever to pay up!
thus why the CC fees are not a straight 4% or higher. BTW card present vs internet/phone order sales the CC fees are double. we rarely have someone here in person.
more on marketing. we bought out a competitor for audio over 3 yrs ago. on that site he sold a product (very few options) vs our very advanced and often very overwhelming system configurators.
it was interesting to see how that site reached people that adk pro audio could not. we have now since shut it down. but there were definately 2 types of clients
one who wants to be told buy this and others who want options..
we have often talked about a dual site where you simply are asked do you want to configure a system or buy a pre built..
in fact at one point we offered that,  there was a buy button (basic default config) and the customize button.
very rarely did we get an order with the simple buy button..
one of the things i have been after Eric about for yrs is writing pages of why this over that and how to do this..
why more memory is needed for AE, etc,etc
(like he has any spare time).
as to the why is 32gig so much more, aside from the OP asking i dont think we get that often. it has to do with memory compaitiblity with X79 and 8 gig sticks that work are not cheap..
we use the same 8 gig sticks on the Z77. trying to not stock 2 types of memory..
sadly your post has touched upeon something that has driven us crazy for a long time.

  • Buying or Building the right desktop.

Hello, I've been saving up awhile for a desktop I have after effects cs4 for my laptop but It's just too slow.
So I have a few questions...
    1. How much ram is recomened for smooth use?
    2. Should I build or buy a Desktop?
3.How much would the total cost would be to build this or buy this Desktop?
    4. What should the Desktop have, to Run After Effects smoothly ?
    5. idk what else.
    Please Respond,
    Thank you.

    1. if you have Win x64,  the more RAM, the better, I have 24GB and still get RAM full every now and then - http://blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2009/12/performance-tip-dont-starve-yo.html or http://blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2009/03/cs4-production-premium-on-64bi-1.html
    2. generally yes, desktops are faster than laptops, and you have more possibilities to upgrade/extend your rig afterwards. Also, most laptops only have room for 1 HDD, and having all files on a single drive will decrease performance drastically.
    3. That's not how this issue is adressed. You go the other way around: think of how much you can spend and build a rig around that.
    4.  - video card with OpenGL 2.0 or later (most newer cards have already 4.0) - pro graphics cards like Quadro generally perform better than gaming cards;
         - separate HDD for media/projects (the faster the better); prefferably a 3rd HDD for renders;
         - enough RAM (the more the better)
         - fast CPU - check http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html and see what you can afford

P.S. don't cheap out on the mobo, it's the central part of your comp. You get more performance and reliability with a good mobo + slower CPU than cheap mobo + monster CPU

  • Mobile product- Build Vs Buy

    Hello,
Can I get information about differentiation between a Mobile product which can be built and bought off the shelf. There are various vendors who are partners with SAP and have their products certified. Can this solution be built as per the needs? I do understand that there will be a turn around time if a solution is built rather than a built product.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I cannot directly advise you on buying or not buying certain product but I can explain the SAP-Sybase Co-Innovation platform and help you make a decision.
Sybase and SAP have jointly developed a co-innovation platform to bring the SAP business suite of applications to handlhelds. The platform includes SAP NW Mobile 7.1 and above from SAP and SUP solution from Sybase. These two products together make a platform which can be used to develop, deploy and administer an enterprise mobile landscape. With SAP acquiring Sybase the investments into the joint solution will definately increase and yield a more cohesive solution in future.
At present Sybase shipped two mobile applications, one for CRM Sales and other for ERP workflows. There are various certified vendors who have partnered with Sybase or SAP to deliver more applications on this platform. As a platform even Sybase and SAP want more and more vendors to build applications on top of this and sell as it provides a fast acceleration and delivery cycle for customers. SAP will continue to provide more applications on this platform too. Additionally, the customers can choose to develop there own applications on this platform if no custom solution exists in market.
Thereby a build vs. buy decsion is totally dependent upon availability of the application but going forward this platform will prove to be a good investment for enterprise mobility needs of SAP customers.

  • Building icons on desktop

My buddy has dragged the contents of the "all images" folder to the desktop. 6634 files now are on his desktop. It appears the finder is building icons for each file and the computer is running really sluggish... click... select... you get the idea.
I am leaving the computer on to see if it can just fix itself. I tried to erase the files but I get the message "the item is in use by the system, erasing may interrupt the program..." I need to select the "continue" to erase the file, then is waits about a minute before returning to me the same message. Might take a while with 6633 files now.
I upgraded the computer to Snow Leopard, fixed permissions; all to no avail.
Set up a new user and the computer is fine so it must be the 6633 files on the desktop.
Options to fix this problems would be appreciated...

  • Buy desktop version of Indesign for teachers at special discount

I'm a teacher and want to buy InDesign for my desktop which runs windows 7, I understand as am a teacher and eligible for  at a special discount.
PS help me with the link to buy the product with the discount available.
    Thanks,
    Arif

Despite the name, no version of InDesign runs "in the cloud". It is always a local app, running from your hard disk.
However, current versions are ONLY available in subscription and ALWAYS need to check the internet regularly.
At least, that is the retail position. An educational establishment should enquire about volume licensing and possible offline use.

  • Resources on building multi-resolution desktop games?

Hi, I'm currently working on a game and was wondering if it was at all possible to build an Adobe AIR desktop game that has multi resolution handling.
For instance, when you boot up Binding of Issac, or any other desktop game, in the settings page you can change the resolution from2560 x 1440, to 1920x1080, and so on so forth to accomadate the game to your monitors screen / fullscreen, windowed, etc.
    Is this possible to do?
I've looked on the web for and I've come across is iOS resolution development. Are there any resources available for desktop games? So that hypothetically in the future, if I use Adobe Air to package up my game I could submit it to steam, and not neglect users who have monitors bigger than 1920x1080 6:9?

    O.K.
    This is my opinion:
If you want to create high quality applications using Apex you will need the following
(the percentages in the brackets are supposed to show the importancy in the total of 100%):
    1. Good knowledge of PL/SQL and SQL (70%)
    2. Good knowledge of javascript (10%)
    3. Good knowledge of HTML and DOM (10%)
    4. Good knowledge of CSS (5%)
    5. Other programming skills (5%)
How can you get (improve) that knowledge?
    1. getting a training (5%)
    2. reading documentation (15%)
    3. learning by doing (50%)
    4. participating in forums (20%)
    5. using google (10%)
As I said, this is only what I think and how I see that. Other people may dissagree.

  • Building a budget desktop PC for CS5 (under $1,700)

After reading most of the posts here and elsewhere about building a PC to run Premiere CS5 I decided to take a stab at assembling the components to build my own (keep in mind I have never done this before). Below are the items in my Newegg shopping cart followed by an explanation about why I chose them. Please note the prices are valid as of 8/19/10 and the ones with a * are the prices after rebate so the actual prices may be higher when you read this. I welcome any comments and suggestions:
    MOBO: Asus P6X58D-E LGA 1366 - $229.99
I looked at the Gigabyte Mobo but some of the bad reviews really concerned me. The Asus seems to get much better feedback and is only $20 more.
    Processor: Intel Core i7-930 2.8GHz 4x256KN L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W - $289.99
This was the easiest item to choose since everyone seems to like it.
    Ram: G.Skill PI 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1600 - $199.99 - But I'm ordering two (12GB total) for $399.98
I have never heard of G.Skill memory but it seems to be the most popular and highest rated at Newegg.
    PSU: Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750W - $89.99 *
Corsair seems to be highly rated although not perfect... several customers reported problems or DOA units. I guess there is no PSU maker that you can really count on.
Case: AZZA Solano 1000 ATX Full Tower - $59.99 *
My alternate choice is the Antec 1200 for $159.99 but the Azza gets very good ratings so with that price difference I am leaning towards trying it. By the way, I was hoping to get a mid-tower case but have concerns about my graphics card fitting so I guess I'll go with the full tower. Like Harm said elsewhere "bigger is better".
    Video card: MSI N465GTX - $234.99 *
This was a tough decision because everyone here seems to recommend the GTX 470, yet the 465 is about $100 cheaper. I'm really wondering if I'll see a HUGE difference in performance between the 465 and 470. I may still go with the 470 if I can find one under $300. By the way, this MSI model has dual fans which I read elsewhere is better than the single fans found on most cards. Not sure if it really matters with all the fans included in the case I am getting. If it doesn't, maybe I should get a GTX 470 with one on-board fan?
    System Drive: WD Caviar Black 640GB 7200RPM 32MB Cache - $74.99
I read how others recommend a smaller drive with 10K RPM but I may use this PC for other things besides video editing so I think I want the larger drive.
Video storage drive (internal): WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200RPM 32MB Cache - $94.99
    DVD/CD Drive: LG 22x DVD OEM - $24.99
I don't have any plans to do Blu-ray anytime soon.
    Wireless Net Card: EDIMAX EW-7128G - $19.99
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM - $99.99
I haven't been able to see how the higher end versions of Win 7 improve Premiere performance.
    TOTAL:  $1,619.88
(I already own a monitor, keyboard, mouse and Premiere CS5. I'm also not including liquid cooling until the system is up and running and I see if I really need it.)
I had hoped to stay under $1,500 but I don't see how that is possible.
What do you think? I won't pull the trigger on this system until the end of August so feel free to offer comments and suggestions. This will be my first ever PC build and I'm kind of nervous about it but also excited about getting a system that will be a high performer for many years to come. Now I have to find some good websites that teach how to put all this stuff together!
    Thanks!

  • After upgeade to win10 build 9926, my desktop application get wrong monitor count.

I have an application that needs to query monitor counts.
I follow the below link :
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20261523/detect-number-of-display-monitor
It query one DeviceID. That is right.
But in yesterday, I upgrade my notebook to win10 build 9926.
It becomes to query two DeviceIDs, and second device is :
    DeviceID  DISPLAY\CMN1127\1&8713BCA&0&UID0
That is wrong, because I don't extend any monitor.
I also get the same result at another notebook that after upgrade to win10 build 9926.
Is it a bug in win10 build 9926?

Is this an application that you developed? If so, then these aren't the
correct forums to ask development related questions in. These are IT Pro
    forums, not Developer forums.
You should check the support forums on MSDN.

  • Buying Desktop External HD / What IOmega Units Are S/Leopard Compatible?

I own an IMAC and have never set up Time Machine. I was going to buy a Time Capsule however my printer is already wireless so I so ne real advantage. What Iomega external hard drives are plug and play?

Most any drive will work with Macs, and Time Machine.
Most drives come formatted for Windoze, but most of them can be re-formatted on your Mac to work with it. See item #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip.*
Also note item #1 there for size considerations; and items #3 and/or 4 for using with other data and/or other Macs.
If you think you ever might want to put a "bootable clone" on it, be sure it's a bootable drive (some WDs aren't). Most PPC Macs can boot only from FireWire; most Intels can boot from F/W or USB.
Depending on what ports you have, FireWire 800 is by far the fastest; FireWire 400 next, and USB slowest (F/W 400 and USB 2.0 are rated about the same, but since your Mac's CPU has to do more of the work with USB, actual throughput is usually less).
Many folks think USB is less reliable than FireWire. If you do get USB, be sure to connect it to a port on your Mac, not a keyboard (that may be only USB 1.0). Try to avoid hubs, too.
It's usually best to get a drive with it's own power supply, as taking power from your Mac can be a marginal proposition.
Take any advice for or against particular makes or models with a grain of salt: all makers (of just about anything) can have a "run" of bad components, or a relatively few early failures. Plus, by the time any really good trends are noted, the model has probably been revised or replaced anyway!

  • Thinking of Building/Buying a PC for Video Editing?

If one is thinking of building, or buying a PC for video editing, Harm Millaard has published an ARTICLE in the Adobe Hardware Forum. He has arranged it such that one can rather pick and choose from three levels of system - beginner, intermediate and full-blown advanced pro-level rig. There have been some advances in hardware, since the article was first published, but with the discussions that follow it, much has been updated.
Harm approaches the computer from the eyes of one using PrPro, but with the exception of the GPU requirements for the Mercury Playback Engine (MPE), PrE will benefit from his suggestions. Be sure to follow all of the links that he offers in that rather longish thread.
Also see his other NLE PC ARTICLE, and his storage requirements ARTICLE.
If one is considering a RAID setup, his RAID ARTICLE will prove very useful.
If one is considering working with external HDD's, then this ARTICLE should be useful.
Hope that this helps people, who are considering a new computer for video editing.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

Harm Millaard has written an update to his computer ARTICLE, and there is some good discussion in it, as well.
    Hope that this helps someone.

  • Is there any handbooks about build the Desktop Environment?

Is there any handbooks about build the Desktop Environment?
I found it is difficult to build up the Desktop Environment with Archlinux.
Of course, I am new to archlinux, and I learnd a lot by using it.  I really love it~!
I just want to make my desktop as same as Ubuntu 8.04...    It's just a small dream..
I think I need a handbook.....   Who can write it or where can find it~!  (The wiki is not enough)

Could you provide a screenshot? Picture? Something?
You say you can startx succesfully. Is this with an unmodified (shouldn't even exist) .xinitrc, or with a .xinitrc configured to start Gnome? If the latter, can you post it?

  • New build, no display

    Hi all,
I'm new to the board, building a new desktop and I've run into a slight snag. I'll get all the details out first
    AMD Phenom X4 840 3.2 ghz
    MSI 760 GM-E51
    GSkill ddr3 1333 pc310666 4GBx2
    Western Digital WD5000aakx 500gb HDD
    MSI DH42AS 24x dvdrw
those are all installed, i have an MSI r6570 video card I haven't put in yet, because well I can't get a display from the onboard video outputs. I've tried 2 different monitors and 2 different cables, a dvi to hdmi and a hdmi to hdmi and no luck anywhere. If anyone can give me a heads up on something I might have missed, it will be greatly appreciated.

Other suggestions in this thread that you get another PSU pronto are good advice--and it's free (the advice, I mean)...  So take it.
I wonder--you say it's a new build--did you by chance forget to plug in the 4-pin/8-pin 12v cpu PSU connector?  Does the Logsys (honestly never heard of it) PSU even have one?  Just a thought--probably wouldn't boot if that was the case, though.
that psu he has is junk and should only be used as a paper weight! its likely if it ever works to deliver very dirty/inconsistant power to componants and cause them to be ruined from nasty spikes and sudden dips in power! there are horror stories from uses who have had them all over the internet and should not be trusted at all JUST GET RID OF IT "BURN IT WITH FIRE SO IT WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO BE USED AGAIN!"
cheaply made psu's are the bane of the world and as such should be avoided at all costs (i personally will only buy good well reviewed (by users of them) psu's regardless of how much they cost) NEVER BUY CHEAP PSU'S PLEASE JUST DONT DO IT  (save for a few more weeks if you have to and buy a good one please  )!

  • Netbeans Java Desktop Application Problem

    Hi
I have build a java desktop application via netbeans and it creates a jnlp file to execute this applets however in my project when i press a button on an applet it opens another applet and send some parameter via html file how can i do that in desktop application because it doesnt have html file it only has jnlp file ?
    Thanks

I guess I didnt make myself clear enough,I dont want to use another applet's public methods I want to execute it
    Lets make a scenario
assume that I have an applet a and applet b
on applet a there is a button called open applet b and when somebody press this button applet b will be opened
Before I was doing that like this
                URL page = new URL("http://www.xxx.edu.tr/~team5/nps/build/giris.html");
getAppletContext().showDocument(page,"_self");but now I made the project netbeans desktop application so I dont have any html file I only have jnlp and jar files
so what should I do to maintain opening an applet from another applet?
    Thanks

I was shooting HDV when I built this system, but am now shooting with a Canon EOS C100 and a 5D Mk III DSLR. I record DNxHD externally onto Atomos Ninja Blade.
Although this system seems pretty well balanced, I have never been able to do much more than basic editing with Premiere's real-time effects, since anything else (like Noise reducers, MB Looks and Red Giant effects) pretty much cripples my system playback, rendering, exporting. Even with HDV footage I was never satisfied with performance. I recently upgraded my storage from a 2-disk RAID 0 to a 4-disk 16 TB RAID 0, which seems to have helped transfer rates a little.
I wonder if the GTX 580 is defective.  It seems to run pretty hot under load at 60 degrees or more unless I boost fan speed to the max. I cannot change any GPU clocks speeds or other settings from default without the display crashing. That is why I am considering a new GPU. I plan to build or buy a new PC within the next year, anyway, but it would be great if a GPU could extend the life of this one.
As for a new complete built, I need to know if now is the time to do it. Or, is there some new motherboard/processor series on the horizon that I should wait for? The frustrating thing about these kinds of forum threads is that the information is quickly dated and obsolete.

    I am hardware accelerated.
As for the GPU temperature. The NVidia control panel monitors voltages and temperatures, but gives no reference for what the normal operating temperature should be. How do I know if the GPU is running too hot? The same goes for the rest of the components. I'm sure you professional computer builders have that kind of info available, but how do the rest of us know when something is wrong with a component? Is there a troubleshooter I can download? or a chart that shows a normal range of numbers?
When I first built this computer 3 years ago or so, I had a GTX 470, but it fried a year later and I replaced it with the GTX 580, which gave me a good boost in performance over the 470. It would seem that a 700 series GPU would give me better performance over the 580 - with a vast in increase in CUDA cores and more RAM, etc. But, I have read in this forum and other places that a newer model GPU alone will not make much difference, which makes absolutely no sense. If that's true, then what's the point of having all those additional CUDA cores?

  • On Windows Server 2012 R2 the "Show my desktop background on Start" is grayed out

    Hi
As shown below, the new 8.1/2012R2 function "Show my desktop background on Start" is not available on Windows Server 2012 R2.
    I have tried multiple solutions:
    - Activate OS (In Win 8.1 - the feature is unavailable when Win8.1 is not activated)
    - Install Desktop Experience
    - Playing with the registry key "Subkey: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Accent Entry:
    MotionAccentId_v1.00
But no luck. Does anyone have a solution.
The reason why I need this is, that I am building a Remote Desktop solution, and here we want to give users the same experience as from their desktops.
Looking forward to some exciting feedback.
    Regards,
    Mr. Thomas
