Building xemacs on Mavericks?
I built xemacs from source under OS X 10.7 (I think it was) with no problem. My only flag to 'configure' was the path of the install directory.
That executable failed to run under Mavericks, so I tried the build again: run 'make distclean', run 'configure', and then run 'make'. That step completed compilations but failed with ld errors: many duplicate symbols. These duplicates appeared to be due to wrong preprocessing of C++ inline declarations, so I altered the #define for inlines in the Makefile that had been generated by configure. Duplicate symbols went away, and the executable got built. However, the full build includes loading lisp files. A few files failed to load, although they exist in the seeming correct place.
I tried running the executable anyway and got this:
dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/X11/lib/libXaw.8.dylib
Referenced from: /Users/marks/packages/xemacs/bin/xemacs
Reason: image not found
libXaw.8.dylib indeed does not exist, at least not at that location. There is, however, a file called libXaw8.8.dylib. I guess this is a typo in the name, especially considering that there are other files in that dir called libXaw.[67].dylib.
So: the macros in the Xemacs configuration need some tweaks; there's something screwy in Mavericks' (?) X11 libs; and there's a problem getting all the lisp files loaded during the build.
My system: 20-inch iMac (2.4 GHz Intel Duo, early 2008); OS X 10.9, XCode 5.0.2. Source for xemacs 21.4.22 (current release).
Comments? Way forward?

Clean install of Maverick on my iMac
Hi,
I have an early 2009 24" iMac and ever since my initial purchase, I upgraded my OS to the latest version, and now I have Mavericks. But my machine is performing slower and slower (even before Mavericks). Even for simple tasks like browsing a page with Safari, it takes minutes ! I'm not sure if my machine is adware free, because many ads popup, or are build in the html page.
Anyway, I decided to start all over again with a clean install of Maverick, and only restore the necessary files and apps I need and not the stuff I downloaded during the past 5 years, and never used it again. I also want to add an extra 4GB RAM up to 8GB.
I already did some research and build a bootable Maverick on USB, so I'm prepared to do the clean install.
But before going on, I want to be absolutely sure, I can restore the things I need.
So what is the best method, to take a backup of :
1) My iTunes files (music, apps, videos, books,...)
2) My personal data (documents, ....)
3) My software (most of them I don't have the installation files anymore)
4) My iPhoto library
I also took a backup on my Time Machine, but I read somewhere that this is not ideal for restoring after a clean install, because Time Machine won't recognize the new machine anymore.
So before plugin in my bootable USB drive , please help me out on choosing the right way to backup (and restore) the things I want..For your iTunes stuff, photos, and documents, you can just navigate to the media files or documents on Time machine and restore them to your new installation.
For the software, I'd get updated versions of good installers, either on disc, or from new downloads, and make sure they are compatible with Mavericks. Just dragging the app over won't work very well.
I wouldn't reinstall any "crapware", such as MacKeeper or CleanMyMac, or anything else that purports to "optimize", "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. If you have this stuff on your Mac, that is probably what is making it slow in the first place.
Antivirus software, also problematic, and not that useful on Macs; I wouldn't install it.
For any peripherals, look for updated versions of drivers or other software from the manufacturer and install those. Old drivers and kernel extensions are not going to play well with Mavericks.
I just did a clean install. I found it useful to make a list of everything I wanted to move, and wrote down passwords, network settings, and email settings. -
I've been using CFEclipse for years, looking at CF Builder as an alternative.
I installed the trial, been using it for a couple of days and like it so far, but I can't figure out (and I spent way to much time trying) how to get the CFML toolbar to show.
I'm probably missing something very basic.
Can anyone please point me in a direction?
Using CF Builder on OSX Mavericks.
Thank youThanks for sticking with me on this.
I reset the perspective, created a folder named magpie2 in the root (/Applications/ColdFusion10/cfusion/wwwroot) and created a new project called Magpie2. The Sample URL text box on the Server Details page still says "Sample URL is not available. (Project is not in the server web root local2)".
I canceled the new project dialog, created a new server (local3) and attempted the new project creation again, same message except it refers to local3.
I click on Next, leave Additional Source empty and select no applications.
I click on Finish.
Project appears in the Navigator.
I right click and select New CF Page.
It creates the untitled.cfm page, which I save.
Toolbar is unchanged:

How do I update to the current Maverics from Snow Leopard
I've been checking the Maveric downloads and it seems I need previous upgrades in order to download 10.2.x. Is it necessary to progressively download every version or is there a short cut? Right now I have Snow Leopard.
--- 21" iMac, late 2009, OSX10.6.8; 3.33 GHz Intel Core2Duo; 4Gb SDRAM; Serial# YD04xxxxxxxxxDMX; Build 10K549Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?

Cannot update Global Password Policies, no SSL bind, etc
Hello Community--
This is day 3 of the Apple Server Hostage Crisis, and it looks like I'll started clean slate build #5.
By way of background, I had a functioning ML/2.2.2 server that had RAID problems (and still does). Attempting to rebuild array failed and I lost the boot hard drives. I have access to dumpall.psql and all the user data (on an external drive). I attempted a couple of times to build a clean Mavericks/3.0 server but I couldn't figure out how to get the service data back. So I build a clean ML/2.2.2 system, got the wiki/calendar/contacts, etc data back in place to include establishment of an OD master using an archive. Turns out the archive was from one of my Mavericks/3.0 attempts, and while it seemed to create the OD okay, every time I tried to edit the global password policy, Server.app crashed. I decided to try to move up to Mavericks/3.0. Server.app no longer crashed but still cannot change global password policies. I get the following error:
servermgrd[]: servermgr_dirserv: +[PWPolicy setGlobalPolicyFromDict] error: policy data modification failed: Object class violation: attribute 'apple-user-passwordpolicy' not allowed ()
I deleted the OD master a couple of times and recreated it from a new archive. On the second iteration, my PositiveSSL cert was deleted....
Q1: Has anyone seen this password policy error and know how to solve it?
Additionally, although I have (had) the cert from PositiveSSL for my domain, the OD with Server 3 will not use it, instead reverting to a self-signed cert. All other services seem to work with the PositiveSSL cert. I've seen discussions in the community on this but have not found a solution.
Q2: Is this related to why I cannot create a secure binding?
I have not even gotten to the point of trying to set up Profile Manager to manage users and devices. I have not read anywhere that I *need* to have Profile Manger started to get a basic system running. From a Mavericks-based client where I've logged in with a local user, I can su <OD User> and log in, but the automount of the user's home directory fails due to an authentication issue.
Q3: In Mavericks, does a device have to be enrolled/configured in Profile Manager in order to bind and be usable?
Well, I'm off to start my next rebuild, but would still appreciate comments and suggestions as I suspect this hostage crisis is not over yet.
Thanks.
TimRebuilt from scratch and reloaded databases for services and the OD archive. But something was still jacked and passwords wouldn't take. I was starting to suspect it was OD again, but then I decided to completely wipe the device_management database, which I did following these steps: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5349.
That may have gotten me on track, which is good because I was getting ready to recreate each user account. I'll continue the effort tomorrow (day 4).
I have not decided if I will try again for Mavericks/Server 3. Sigh....

I am running mountain lion os 10.8.5 on mac book pro mid 2012 build. If I upgrade to Mavericks will MS Office programs still work? There does not appear to be an updated version of MS Office for Mac past 2011 that I bought last year and am using now. Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks.Office 2008 and 2011 will run on Mavericks, but you may not be able to get the installer for it at this time.

Error when starting Flash Builder 4.7 in Mac OSX Maverick
I'm getting this error when I start Flash Builder 4.7 on Mac OSX Maverick.
I solved it. The trick was to press the Install button. After a few minutes Flash Builder opened.

Flash Builder 4.7 on OSX 10.9 (Mavericks)
Hey Everyone,
If you've updated to OS X Mavericks BETA and you're unable to start Flash Builder 4.7 visit the following page and download the the file on the right.
Install Java 6 and run Flash Builder and everything should work as normal.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572Doesn't fix the general buggyness with Flash Builder 4.7 on Mavericks. Adobe needs to release a patch.

What does "Build" mean in OS X Mavericks 10.9.2?
Like
Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Build 13C53?
Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Build 13C39?
Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Beta Build 13C48?
Does it mean previous releases?
Like what they have in Wikipedia
SnapshotWhat SilverSkyRat said.
In addtion, the software developers, internal test groups, outside beta testers need to be able to report problems and specify a specific nightly build, so that the developer can go back to that version and verify what changes went into that build that might have caused the problem.
It also allows internal testers and beta testers a way to know that the version they are running is older (newer) then another version that is being offered for testing.
It also allows developers to tell all testers that they should NOT install a specific build, if it is discovered that it is a bad build.
Essentally, the development process needs a way to communicate what nightly build is what, and be able to associate bugs during development with a specific build.
And generally that build number can be used to get the exact sources from a source code control system that was used to create that build.
The same as SilverSkyRat, I do not know the exact process inside Mac OS X development, but what SilverSkyRat and I have described is what I've experienced at several different software development companies which develop Unix operating systems and Unix software for sale.
And finally, the build numbers you see in your released Mac OS X version, is just the build number where they decided to declare Golden Master for shipping to customers.

Mavericks Mail update (build 1822): constant folder syncing with Gmail IMAP
The Mail update to build 1822 seems to fix previous major problems for Gmail IMAP. I've changed my Gmail settings (on the Gmail side) back to my original setup: "All Mail" now is turned off for display in the Mail client. That allows me to search messages and see search results in Mail that show the folder in which search result messages reside...instead of "All Mail" for every message matching the search criteria, as it showed when "All Mail" was turned on.
Two remaining problems for me.
1 -- Regularly and frequently, Mail goes out to the Gmail IMAP server and checks every single mail folder and syncs with them. It doesn't matter that the folders haven't been changed or that I haven't sent, received, or viewed any mail...if Mail is open, it checks and syncs frequently. Now, very few folders have new filed messages, so bandwidth use of this behavior presumable is low...but it sure is annoying. You can see it happening by choosing "Activity" under the Window menu, and watching for a while.
2 -- I can't change the display order of Gmail folders in the left-hand column of the Mail app display. The order is fixed and it doesn't seem to follow any rule I can detect. The folder display certainly isn't alphabetical or by date.
Suggestions or insight about these two challenges are welcome.
Thanks!I've got no solution on problem one (sorry for both of us), but might for problem two.
I have four IMAP accounts in mail: 2 gmail, one google hosted app, and one Corporate. Mavericks mail (with update) constantly checks all IMAP accounts, whether gmail or not.
This contant IMAP freak out may be related to the solution I have for you on Gmail folder sorting. I've tried diabling the account (in preferences), quitting mail, then restarting mail, and then re-enabling the account. Let mail finish its IMAP freak out, then drag the folders where you want them. They may or may not appear to change succesfuly. Wait a while (so Mail does the IMAP dance again), quit Mail, restart Mail. If it looks good great, if not, do the whole disable / re-enable account thing. Sounds mental, and pretty much is, but it worked for me. I cobbled this together from hints on previous Mail version / IMAP problems.
My pet theory--which is entirely unsubstantied by any evidence whatsoever--is that Mail's local cache is not being updated properly while in use, and the flood of IMAP traffic is leaving the folder structure changes in limbo until you force changes with the quit / preference change. Whatever the cause, it seems to affect non Gmail as well (for at least me). -
This is more than annoying, the attempt to update my iOS Apps via iTunes 11.4 (18) ends each and every time with a crash of itunes, no way to update. The iPhone refuses to update via WLAN, the only way to update is to get updates via mobile data connection.
This Problem is not solved, and it startet to exist with either the installation of 10.9.5 Build 13F34 or the installation of iTunes 11.4 (18).
Thank you Apple, your updates made my digital living much more easy and comfortable.

How can i build a virtual network on mavericks please?
I'd like to run mavericks and os x server on my mac mini and be able to connect them to simulate a network. I bought vmware fusion 6 for this and think i got it wrong. I can run both as separate virtual machines but i cant get them to connect to each other, one of the boffins at work said I needed a virtual switch to be able to do this.
Anyone have any ideas how I could do this or what do I need to buy, its to help me prepare for the os x essentials exam.
Thanks.Hi John,
You need to enable both virtual servers in the same network and assign static IP addresses to them. Choose the correct networkadapter in the VMware Fusion client settings and then assign a static IP address in the network settings of both virtual machines. So if you've got a network fi 192.168.1.xxx then assign 192.168.1.100 to one virtual machine and 192.168.1.101 to the other. That way they can see each other on the same network. You can view them both from the client and connect to them as well. Just don't name them both "server" in your system preferences, as that might get confusing...
Enable filesharing on a folder, flip the switch and you're good to go. Set up both of them with the correct routeraddress and DNS server, and both machines will be able to connect to the internet.
Goodluck!

this is so frustrating!
I upgraded to mac OS 10.9.1 a few months ago. I can no longer sync my mac contacts nor calendars onto my Blackberry Curve - this is my business phone.
I've hunted and hunted around for a solution and have got nowhere, other than a very long convoluted method which requires me to back-up my mac contacts, go into various files and change things ... all very risky. I appreciate that Mac have done the dirty by seeminly removing iSync and unabling Sync Services in the normal sense of the word, but I would've thought that Blackberry by now would have come up with a work around?
Can I export the data and import it into the phone somehow? or Has anyone got a viable solution? If not the blackberry is going in the bin and I will get a smart phone that does "talk" to my mac.
Many thanksI have the same problem, and a supervisor Apple Support guy just told me (23 jan 14), after 2 days of searching, that it is impossible to sync a BB with Mavericks...
I am furious too : it is just like if Apple would be telling plainly that an iPhone cannot phone to a BB...! -
CMake now fails under OS X Mavericks - cannot get stellarium to build.
Trying to compile stellarium under Mavericks, it worked every time under Lion prior to upgrade to Mavericks. Have xcode 5 plus commandline tools and updated cmake via macports. Using Qt 5.1 which was working under Lion. I am new to this, any ideas appreciated. Looks like cmake is having trouble finding components now.

It also appears to be just a warning and not fatal. Did you try to compile the program after the make was done? -
I am having trouble launching my Actionscript Mobile Project on a device which has iOS7 installed. It recieved this error.
Error occurred while installing the application:
Invalid <device> specified
I can still deploy to my other device with iOS6, I'm running FB4.7 and OSX 10.9. Has anyone else seen this?Hi there.
I know this is an old post, but I fell here having this same problem for some weeks now, and i just figured my issue. Hope it help others:
My iPhone is connecting automatically with my itunes on computer. Not really sure what type of connection or wireless sync, but the fact is that it IS connecting.
For some weird reason it gets Flash Builder crazy and it cannot find the right device anymore. Even when I get my iPhone connected by cable, it says that it found the device, but doesn`t publish to it. The Flash Builder says that it was published, but nothing gets installed, and the debugger cannot connect.
MY SOLUTION (for now): Turn off the phone wi-fi, so it gets out of my home network. works like a charm and I finally can test on my device again.
Really hope this helps.
