Built in 2D Vector?

I was wondering if you are aware of any data structure provided in java that lets you easily deal with two-dimensional storage. The condition is that this data structure should be capable of storing heterogeneous objects (similar to the capability that Vector provides). So I guess what I am asking is "Whats the best way to implement a structure like a 2-D vector?"
I can create my own 2-D vector class with the appropriate accessor methods, but just wanted to refer to you guys before doing so.
Thanks,
Alan

• Photoshop vs Illustrator...keeping it vector

Hi all,
I use photoshop ALL the time and love every feature. However, I've been forcing myself to use Illustrator (love it, but find it's limited compared to photoshop for many projects I do). I'm hoping you all can help with two questions that I have.....
Question 1: I've often heard people starting a project in illustrator then "bringing it in to photoshop" to do other effects....this might seem like a dumb question, but won't that rasterize the work you did in illustrator? And if that's the case, why not start and end the project in photoshop?
Question 2: I started a project in illustrator that involved a lot of pathfinder work and gradient mesh. I'm sure I could have airbrushed in photoshop to get a similar technique but like i said, I want to stick and learn illustrator than always depending on photoshop. I'm currently at a impasse because now I want to use certain parts of a jpg image to mask into the objects i created in illustrator (see link below for example of my objects in question) at lower opacities (in PS I would create a layer with the image i want to use, make a layer mask, lower the layer opacity and soften the hard edges and around the areas I don't want). I tried the clipping mask in Illustrator and it SORTA does the job but not quite.
What i create in Illustrator is very similar to this:
http://vector.tutsplus.com/tutorials/illustration/design-wedding-rings-using-adobe-illustr ator/
What i want to do now is to clip certain parts of other photo images into these rings to make them look part of the ring (in photoshop i would use masking, warping, opacity, layer blending etc). When I created the mask in illustrator, it sorta worked but there's hard edges from the image i made the clipping mask from that i would like to smooth out....among other issues i would normal not encounter in photoshop.
Should I just take it into photoshop and finish it off or is there a way to get my end result in illustrator? And if the answer is to take it into photoshop, then my first question comes into play. I hope this makes sense
any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I've often heard people starting a project in illustrator then "bringing it in to photoshop" to do other effects....won't that rasterize the work you did in illustrator?
Yes, it will.
And if that's the case, why not start and end the project in photoshop?
First, because just as there is a multitude of things you can do by editing raster images, there is a multitude of things you can do in vector-based drawing that you can't do in raster imaging.
Second, the resolution independence of vector graphics is not a matter of whether your work will be rasterized; it's a matter of when. Everything eventually gets rasterized. When you print vector graphics, they are rasterized by the printer. When you display vector graphics on a monitor, they are rasterized by the monitor. In fact, even while you are editing vector paths, you are viewing what you are doing as a raster image on your screen.
Third, raster imaging is lossy by nature; not just in terms of resolution but also in terms of color conversion and color correction. So it's quite common to create a vector-based graphic and keep it as a master which you then rasterize and/or enhance with effects for specific final uses. In other words, it's quite common to create and keep a vector-based file to maintain lossless editability and then "nail it down" to specific rasterization settings optimized for a particular use.
When I created the mask in illustrator, it sorta worked but there's hard edges...
Crisp, sharp edges are naturally germane to vector graphics, just as detailed, noisy texture is germane to raster imaging. That's why both exist. When it comes down to it, vector graphics are mathematically-described shapes; therefore, by nature, sharp edged. When Photoshop needs scale-independent sharp edges, what does it do? It resorts to vector-based paths. Inversely, when Illustrator needs soft fuzzy drop shadows and blurs, or highly-textured fills, what does it do? It resorts to raster imaging.
You can do the things you describe in Illustrator. It has features for raster-based masks, transparency, etc., as do other vector drawing programs. Just as with raster imaging, some programs are better at specific things than others in the same category. Xara Designer Pro, for example, is another vector drawing program, but it does live raster-based feathering far better than does Illustrator.
Many things which appear to be raster-based (reflections, transparency, realistic grads, glows) can, in fact, be rendered entirely with vector-based drawing and thereby retain true resolution independence. For example, you mention mesh grads; an entirely vector-based construct. Soft drop shadows were built entirely from vector-based blends long before raster-based effects appeared in programs like Illustrator.
This is a detail taken from an entirely scaleable vector-based drawing. Some of the object-level feathering and noise texture is raster-based, but mathematically rendered on-the-fly; and therefore scaleable when needed for different output purposes:

• Error when trying to .clear() or .removeAllElements() in 2D vectors

hi,
vectorA is the big vector and it contains a vectorB.
i will like to built a 2D vector. However it happens that when i try to use a vectorB.clear() or vectorB.removeAllElements(), so that i can push in elements again in a fresh vector. Nothing was pushed in.
is it that i haf to
vectorB = new Vector();
inorder to start a new element in vectorA ??
logic goes....
Vector vectorA = new Vector()
Vector vectorB = new Vector()
cnt = 1
//for(j = 1; j <3 ; j ++){
do{
vectorB.addElement(i);
cnt++;
}while(cnt<3)
vectorA.addElement(vectorB);
if i do this once , i can get
vector[0][0] = 1
vector[0][1] = 2
but if i add the commented statements, i get
vector[0][0] = 1
vector[0][1] = 2
vector[0][2] = 1
vector[0][3] = 2
vector[1][0] = 1
vector[1][1] = 2
vector[1][2] = 1
vector[1][3] = 2
do i declare vectorB in the do loop, that is create a new vector everytime or do i declare it globally?? thankz for the time pals.

try this
int cnt = 1;
for(int j = 1; j <3 ; j ++){
Vector vectorB = new Vector(2);
for (int cnt = 1; cnt<3; cnt ++) {
vectorB.addElement(i);
vectorA.addElement(vectorB);
}

• Importing Illustrator with effects into flash

I was curious if there is a way to import Illustrator files seamlessly into flash. My project in Illustrator has a lot of effects like drop shadows
here is what the file looks like: http://adjustreality.com/uploads/mando.jpg
so as you can see it is pretty complex. I want to import as much as I can in vector so that it saves on load time since i already built it in vectors. is it possible to import most of it in vector then just rastor the stuff that might not translate like gaussian blur etc?

answered my own question, I just pasted it in and it asked to use some illustrator import tool, works perfect.

• How do I create a High Quality Image with a low file size???

Dear All,
I am creating an invitation in Illustrator which I then place into photshop to create a JPEG. I want to create a high quality JPEG version of it but with a low file size because I am emailing the invitation. Am I correct in placing the image into photshop or should I export it from Illustrator.
The image is built of of vectors and one JPEG but they are not high in quality.
Can anyone help me please
Thanks
Ben

The image is built of of vectors and one JPEG but they are not high in quality.
For this type of image you would probably be better choosing GIF format (now known for some reason as 'Compuserve GIF'). Taking the number of "colors' down untl it still looks high quality, and anti-aliasing is preserved.

• Do iphone size apps submitted as universal/ ipad apps automatically scale to ipad size?

We have an iphone size application developed in flash builder, we'd like to submit as universal for ipad. Its built mainly in vectors and scales fine to higher resolutions. If we submit the iphone size application as an ipad or universal application:
a) Will apple accept it as universal?
b) Will it automatically scale to full screen to fit the ipad even though the .ipa is iphone size?
Hope you can help,
Cheers,
T.

Have you got automatic downloads turned 'on' on your iPhone in Settings > Store ?

• Built in camera not showing up in devices

I have installed Skype but it can not find my built in camera (when I go to select the video device it doesn't find anything). My system is a Dell Studio 1458.
uname -r -s
Linux 3.16.3-1-ARCH
I have searched and can not find anything useful. I can't even seem to locate my camera. The Arch Webcam Setup has some information but I can't even find my device listed. This webcam has worked in the past (on other operating systems) but I have never tried to get it to work on Arch until now.

I need some help for Difference Between 2 Vectors Implementation
I have written a short program to explain what I exactly one.. BasicallY I am looking for a method that returns a Vector containing the elements of vect1 minus the elements of vect2
I tried using 2 for loops but its not possible. Is there a built in or a easier way to achieve this difference between 2 Vectors?
import java.util.Vector;
public class VectorDifference {
static Student stud1 = new Student("Test1", 15);
static Student stud2 = new Student("Test2", 15);
static Student stud3 = new Student("Test3", 15);
static Student stud4 = new Student("Test1", 15);
static Student stud5 = new Student("Test3", 15);
static Student stud6 = new Student("Test7", 15);
static Vector vect1 = new Vector();
static Vector vect2 = new Vector();
public static void main(String[] args) {
vect1.add(stud1);
vect1.add(stud2);
vect1.add(stud3);
vect1.add(stud4);
vect1.add(stud5);
vect1.add(stud6);
System.out.println("Vector 1 - Vector 2");
class Student{
String name;
int age;
public int getAge() {
return age;
public void setAge(int age) {
this.age = age;
public String getName() {
return name;
public void setName(String name) {
this.name = name;
public boolean equals(Object obj){
if(!(obj instanceof Student)){
return false;
Student student2 = (Student)obj;
if(name.equals(student2.getName()) && age == student2.getAge()){
return true;
return false;
public Student(String name, int age) {
this.name = name;
this.age = age;
}

Btw, vectors went out of fashion many many years ago. Use ArrayList instead.Around '98 with the introduction of ArrayList.
The OP could also consider using generics, and using a local variable instead of a field, esp a static field, when ever possible.

• Pixelation of Built In Buttons in Captivate 6

All,
I am creating a new E-learning course in a resolution of 995 x 627 which after much research have found to be the best resoultion. I am having some issues with pixelation that is weird and wanted to bounce it off the group.
I am using the built in buttons in captivate 6 for navigations. If i resize any of the buttons even with using the SHIFT key, I see a lot of pixelation or the buttons seems blurry.
Can anyone tell me a way to fix this issue as i dont want to increase the resolution size of this project?
Thanks
S

Hello,
The 'old' buttons, think you are talking about those, are bitmap (format bmp) and think that is the cause. Just some ideas: did you try out the shapes (vector based) and use them as buttons? You have a lot more possibilities for customizing, and I find them showing up a lot crisper. Moreover they can be used on master slides, if you are talking about navigation, which is not possible with the old buttons. Or you can set them on the first slide and display for the rest of the project. I am finishing a blog post about using shape buttons on master slides.

• Problem to get glyph vector's shape

Some Chinese fonts(TrueType) were created from embeded font files in a PDF file and glyph vectors were

Hi,
I solved my problem.
In my rule 's container, i had declared my subtype (ZBUS0050) like in my task 's container and in my workflow 's container.
ZGCA0050
|----
Attribute 1
|----
Attribute 2
|........................
But my FM couldn't access to the attributes...
So, i just set Attribute 1(FundsCenter) in my rule's container without subtype reference, and it's good.
Thanks for your help.
Regards.

• Is it possible to display the content of complex mutlidimensional datastructures (e.g. std::vectors (dim = 2) of (non-primitive) types) in Xcode debugger?

Hi,
First, let me say that I like Xcode and coding in OS X. However, there is something I miss:
Let me demonstrate what i mean:
This is the representation of a 2D-Vector in Xcode Debugging environment:
v          'std::vector<std::vector<int, std::allocator<int> >, std::allocator<std::vector<int, std::allocator<int> > > >'          [{...}]
0          'std::vector<int, std::allocator<int> >'          [{...}]
1          'std::vector<int, std::allocator<int> >'          [{...}]
2          'std::vector<int, std::allocator<int> >'          [{...}]
3          'std::vector<int, std::allocator<int> >'          [{...}]
4          'std::vector<int, std::allocator<int> >'          [{...}]
5          'std::vector<int, std::allocator<int> >'          [{...}]
6          'std::vector<int, std::allocator<int> >'          [{...}]
7          'std::vector<int, std::allocator<int> >'          [{...}]
8          'std::vector<int, std::allocator<int> >'          [{...}]
So, the above representation is what I would call bad (even useless).
The problem is that the current Linux Kernel (3.1.1) has some problems with the new MBA 2011 (which is really sad) so I can not show you the representation of a 2D-Vector in Qt-Creator for Linux right now (I'm not sure if the Qt-Creator for OS X could display the content properly, since I've never tried it). But you can believe me, that the represantation would look something like the one in Eclipse (which would be a good representation).
So my question: is there a "fix" for this?

What you want is a custom data formatter. I would give you some links, but my iPad wants to convert them into the documentation viewer.
You aren't going to find much help with C++ debugging. While Apple's Clang has made great improvements in C++ support compared to GCC, C++ is really not something that Mac or iOS programmers typically use. The Cocoa containers and objects are so much more versatile. You kind of have to have a masochist streak and a 7 year development schedule to use C++. C++ is experiencing a bit of a resurgence, especially in defense markets. For a long time, compilers had such poor support for C++ that it just wasn't possible. After simplifying the language a little, compilers can now compile and link C++. Consultants have realized they can provide C++ services and burn though billable hours better than any other language on the market. Independent developer, however, don't have those schedules and budgets so they tend to use NSArray. Xcode supports it better in the debugg and, chances are, you don't need to debug it anyway. There are a number of matrix classes built on Cocoa.

You can either set the text in the psd-file, vectorize the type and use these paths as a Vector Mask for a layer with the intended color or place the psd-file without the text in Illustrator or Indesign and apply the text there.
To the best of my knowledge the Smart Object will simply not output as vector data from the psd-file as of this time.

• Vector problem

Hi to you all,
I have built a table which retrieves data from a .jsp file by making an http request. The particular request is made every 10 seconds.
The data is read in lines and the lines are stored in a vector.
i.e. the line is: 1 34 er ty 23
where id=1
The table is built by getting the vector elements (lines). The first element of each line is the "id"(int). On the second request data might have been changed in one or more lines in the .jsp file, thus the program must identify the change(s) and update only the specific line(s) according to the "id". I tried to do something but unfortunately the program reads only the first line of the .jsp file. Can u give me any hlep. Apologies if the explanation of my problem is poor.
I am including the specific part of my code.
Thanx

Actually, I doubt it reads the first line. You've written while (null != inStream.readLine())
String st = inStream.readLine();This reads the first line, discards it, and then reads another line. What you should replace it with is String st;
while ((st = inStream.readLine()) != null)
{or, if you want to keep your scope minimal,for (String st; (st = inStream.readLine()) != null; /* do nothing*/)
{There may be other errors, but it's hard to read unformatted code. If this doesn't fix the problem, please repost the code using [code] tags.

• Where is the Vector class? Can't use it.

Hello!
I've downloaded Flex Builder 3 Trial from Adobe's website.
Now I want to use the Vector class, but this code for example:
var v:Vector.<String>;
v = new Vector.<String>();
Gives me this error:
1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: Vector.
At the IDE, going to
Window -> Preferences -> Flex -> Installed Flex SDKs
I can see that I have Flex 3.2 SDK.
Even more than that: When I search for "Vector" in the help ("Adobe® Flex™ 3 Language Reference") I can see all the details about Vector.
What can I do?
I'd like to avoid installing any newer SDKs due to all the bugs I see listed here in the forums.
Thank you!

It looks like you are trying to type Java code in Flex Builder. Flex applications are generally built using ActionScript.
These docs might help you learn ActionScript:
http://www.flexafterdark.com/docs/ActionScript-Language

I hope that helps...

• How can I make ANY vector graphics with graphics2D and save on clipboard?

I am at my wits end here, and need some help. Simply put, I have a program that creates a basic x-y graph, drawn in a jpanel. I want to create the graph as a vector (emf, eps, svg, I don't care anymore, any of them would be good). But, all I get is a jpg or bitmap.
I tried using the infamous FreeHEP programs, but it won't recognize the output as anything but "image" which means bitmap/jpg.
The user enters x/y data, clicks a button, which crreates a jpanel thusly:
public class GraphMaker extends JPanel {
static BufferedImage image = new BufferedImage(600, 500, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_ARGB);
GraphMaker(double[] xVals, double[] yVals, double[] sems){
setPreferredSize(new Dimension (600,500));
symSize = 10;
XminV = 0;
XmaxV = 0;
// code here just converts input x and y's to pixel coordinates, spacing of ticks, etc...
for (int i =0;i < ArLn; i++){
gX[i] = xO + (gX[i] * xRat);
gX[i] -= xStart;
gY[i] = gY[i] * yRat;
gY[i] = yEnd - gY;
semVal[i] = semVal[i]*yRat;
Ymin = yEnd - (Ymin*yRat);
Ymax = yEnd - (Ymax*yRat);
BufferedImage anImage = new BufferedImage(600, 500, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_ARGB);
Graphics2D g2 = anImage.createGraphics();
g2.setBackground(white);
g2.setColor( Color.WHITE );
g2.fillRect(0,0,600,500);
g2.setStroke(stroke);
// here I use the values to draw lines and circles - nothing spectacular:
g2.setPaint(Color.blue);
int ii = 0;
for ( int j = 0; j < ArLn[ii]; j++ ) {
g2.fill(new Ellipse2D.Float(LgX[ii][j] - symOffst, gY[ii][j]-symOffst, symSize,symSize));
g2.draw(new Line2D.Float(LgX[ii][j],(gY[ii][j]-semVal[ii][j]),LgX[ii][j],(gY[ii][j]+semVal[ii][j])));
g2.draw(new Line2D.Float(LgX[ii][j]-2.0f,(gY[ii][j]-semVal[ii][j]),LgX[ii][j]+2.0f,(gY[ii][j]-semVal[ii][j])));
g2.draw(new Line2D.Float(LgX[ii][j]-2.0f,(gY[ii][j]+semVal[ii][j]),LgX[ii][j]+2.0f,(gY[ii][j]+semVal[ii][j])));
g2.draw(new Line2D.Float(xLoVal[ii],yLoVal[ii],xHiVal[ii],yHiVal[ii]));
image = anImage;
And, when the user clicks on the "copy" button, invokes this:
public class Freep implements Transferable, ClipboardOwner {
public static final DataFlavor POSTSCRIPT_FLAVOR = new DataFlavor("application/postscript", "Postscript");
private static DataFlavor[] supportedFlavors = {
DataFlavor.imageFlavor,
POSTSCRIPT_FLAVOR,
DataFlavor.stringFlavor
private static JPanel chart;
private int width;
private int height;
public Freep(JPanel theGraph, int width, int height) {
this.theGraph = Graphs;
this.width = width;
this.height = height;
//******This is the key method right here: It is ALWAYS imageFlavor, never anything else. How do I make this an EPS flavor?
public Object getTransferData(DataFlavor flavor) throws UnsupportedFlavorException, IOException {
if (flavor.equals(DataFlavor.imageFlavor)) {
return GraphMaker.image;
else if (flavor.equals(POSTSCRIPT_FLAVOR)) {
return new ByteArrayInputStream(epsOutputStream().toByteArray());
else if (flavor.equals(DataFlavor.stringFlavor)) {
return epsOutputStream().toString();
} else{
throw new UnsupportedFlavorException(flavor);
private ByteArrayOutputStream epsOutputStream() throws IOException {
EPSDocumentGraphics2D g2d = new EPSDocumentGraphics2D(false);
g2d.setGraphicContext(new org.apache.xmlgraphics.java2d.GraphicContext());
ByteArrayOutputStream out = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
public DataFlavor[] getTransferDataFlavors() {
return supportedFlavors;
public boolean isDataFlavorSupported(DataFlavor flavor) {
for(DataFlavor f : supportedFlavors) {
if (f.equals(flavor))
return true;
return false;
public void lostOwnership(Clipboard arg, Transferable arg1) {
The same happens with FreeHEP - I want the flavor to be EMF, but the program sees an image so it is always imageFlavor. I know I am missing something, but what, I don't know.
thanks for your help.

I don't think there's a built-in solution. One workaround I've seen is to create a dummy graphics class that overrides the desired drawing functions. Instead of actually drawing pixels, the object writes postscript commands to a buffer. There also seems to be commercial code that does exactly this.
