Built-in audio inputs and output don't respond to anything.

Hi there,
Maybe somebody can help me, I have a macbook pro os x 10.8, and i'm having a bit of problem.
I connected a cable to the line input, and before i had a chance to balance the high volume the whole software in the system preference froze, and now the built-in audio inputs and output don't respond to anything, also in the audio MIDI setup menu. The volume button moves extremely slow, and there is no sound at all. Anybody has any idea?
Thanks in advance

  • How can I use a different driver for audio input and output?

I did a search of course, and came up with something about an aggregate. I have no idea what this is, how to do it, or if it would even work for me.
What I am trying to do is:
    1) Record into Logic Express using my Tascam US-122.
    2) Have playback come out of my computer sound system, not the Tascam.
If I go over to the Audio setup window, I can only record when the driver is set to Tascam US-122. Likewise, I can only listen to sound when my Built-In Audio is selected. It gets rather annoying going between the two.
So, would this aggregate thing solve my problem? If so, how do I do it? Thanks for any help!

Yes it should do what you want.
Go to "Audio Midi Setup", and go to the Audio menu and click "Open Aggregate Device Editor". The interface is pretty simple but if you do get stuck, just use the help function in Audio Midi Setup, as it has a step by step guide.
Then when you return to logic, go to the Preferences>Audio>Drivers section and select Aggregate Device as the new driver rather than either the built in sound or the tascam. Then the inputs and outputs will apply to BOTH devices.

  • How to use a bluetooth cellphone for audio input and output

Hello, I was wondering how to set-up my Mac Book so that I can use my bluetooth cellphone for audio in and audio out. Ideally, I would like to use my handset for talking on iChat and Skype. Has anyone had any luck doing this? When I bond my cellphone these optiosn do not appear. I know that this is easy to do on a Windows machine but I am not sure about how to do it on my Mac Book.
    Thanks!

  • Audio input and output

I am trying to get audio to play through from the audio input to the audio output. I have plugged a line-level keyboard into the audio input and as I play it, it shows that it has plenty of input level in the sound panel of the system preferences. However, there is no sound coming out. I have tried speakers, headphones and the Griffin IMic. If I use a program like SoundStudio3 and click the audio "thru" button it works fine, but it does not work without.
Is there a THRU switch that I am missing somewhere? I tried the Applications/Utilities/AudioMIDI setup to configure it, but the Thru button at the bottom is greyed out (not in operation).
    Thanks.
2 GHZ intel core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Rich,
    Welcome to apple forum.
In my opinion, I don't think OS X have the capability to sent the audio input "THRU" to output directly (I could be wrong).
You need to use Garage band or third party software like you mention before to allow it.
Maybe if you connect third party device that is "supported" the signal become audible and you can hear it. Like mBox using core audio driver.

    Good Luck.

  • Audio input and output at the same time

    Hello mac users.
I have one simple question: since the new macbook has one single audio port for both input and output, how could I, for example, play my guitar AND listen to the headphones at the same time?
I KNOW (because I've tried) that with the iPhone headphones with microphone the port CAN physically work at the same time for input and output, so the question is: what can I use to do that? Will a simple splitter do or do I have to use different tricks?
(I know there is a thread on this already, but it doesn't provide a definitive answer)
    Thank you!

One of the first questions to ask...
Is the audio input stereo or mono?
When using a headset mic you're dealing with a mono input so you at least know the Mac is capable of that.
If it's mono, and I suspect it is, should be easy to either make or purchase a custom cable that has two female input connectors, one mono input and a stereo headphone input.
However, I'd probably just purchase a USB audio interface, the sound, both recording and playback will be head and shoulders above the Macbooks built in internal audio.

  • How can I get my audio input and output devices back? I have no sound and cannot see any of the devices in Audio MIDI Setup..??

Hi, I tried to set up a new output audio device on my mac that would have multiple outputs (iBox Twist speaker and my internal speaker) but when I went to click onto one of the iBox Twist (there were 2 options available: iBox Twist and iBox Twist Stereo), Audio MIDI Setup crashed and when I finally got that back open, I found that there were no audio input or output devices to be found. My sound is working, as when I turn on my iMac, the starting sound still plays, however the volume control in the menu bar is no longer a black colour, but grey and when I try to change the sound on my keyboard it does not change. This already happened to me once, and after 3 hours I managed to fix it very simply (switching off Mac, unplugging power cord, leaving for 15 seconds, plug power cord back in and switch Mac back on, holding Alt, Cmd, P and R keys until you hear the Starting Up sound twice) however this same technique that fixed it once before is not working this time and I am still stuck without sound. I have tried Repair Permissions, rebooting in Safe Mode, Hardware Test and checking for Software Updates. Has anyone else had this problem and managed to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me!

In case anyone has had the same problem as me, I have just managed to fix this by doing the following:
    Switch off Mac
Switch back on in Safe Mode (Hit power button, then hold Shift key until a loading bar appears at the bottom of the screen).
    Switch off Mac again
Remove power cord and wait 15 seconds
Plug power cord back in and hold down the keys alt, cmd, p, r all at the same time until you hear Starting chime for a second time and hopefully your audio will back.

The first things we need to know in order to be able to help are what are your operating system and audio device?
Also the FAQ Setting the Sample Rate in Windows Vista and 7 may help.

  • Is there a reason why no one uses the built in audio inputs on the Mac?

I'm curious.... I've heard various things - but the sound did seem okay to me when I recorded straight into the Mac's input in the past. So... what is the problem with the Mac's inputs and outputs and why does everyone buy a sound card/device instead?

It seems rather odd that Mac fans generally take pride in owning high quality (expensive) machines but are happy ignore poor audio inputs and outputs.
It has nothing to do w/ taking pride in owning high quality machines - you don't buy the Mac because it has great Analog/Digital conversion (it doesn't). You buy a mac because of its stability, its out of the box compatibility with the two most proficient, professional DAWs out there (Pro Tools and Logic), its easy integration with most hardware, the way it handles audio processing. . . the list goes on and on and on. I don't really have the time to go into the intricacies of high quality audio processing, but NO COMPUTER has it. If a computer did come built in with Apogee master clocking, A/D/D/A conversion, and high quality analog mic preamps, you might be looking at your normal computer plus about $15,000 (at least.) Your machine is there for stabile, consistent, day to day recording and audio processing (whether it be editing, mixing, mastering or all three), and you purchase external audio interfaces for the dedicated function that they are made for.
With audio interfaces comes expandability and flexibility that NO system has right out of the box.

  • Utility to switch between Bluetooth headset and built-in audio input/output

I'm looking for a utility that will switch the Sound preference settings between my Mac's built-in audio input/output device and my Bluetooth headset for use with applications such as Skype.
The way I envision it working is that I would click an icon at the top of the screen and it would toggle the Sound preferences settings from
Output = Line Out (or Digital Out)
Input = Line In (or Digital In)
    to
    Output = (my Bluetooth headset)
    Input = (my Bluetooth headset)
    or vice-versa.
That's it. It doesn't need to automatically detect my headset as I might be using the headset on another device. Just a button that would toggle between the built-in and Bluetooth device settings.
Has anyone seen anything like this?

    Thanks, it works great.
It would be even better if one could define device groups. e.g. Headset, built-in devices, etc. I'll drop a note to the developer.

  • How can I make Apple Earphones be the Input and Output for Audio

I have some older headphones and they aren't compatible with a Mid 2010 (Intel Core i3) 21.5 Inch iMac
Is there some way to make Apple Earphones be the Input and Output for Audio in the iMac
This is a problem for me personally as when I am talking to someone on Skype the iMac picks up the In-built Microphone audio, and yes the headphones I'm using do work straight from the iMac as audio output
    Any help is appreciated

you can connect the headset to something like this

  • Xbox digital audio input and then output through MacBook digital audio port

    Hi,
Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm trying to output a Dolby Digital (I think AC3) signal from my Xbox 360 into the MacBook's digital audio input and then output it through the digital audio output. I can output 5.1 sound from the MacBook itself but I can't get the Xbox audio to pass through. I don't know if the audio is at a sample rate not supported or needs decoding or what!
    Any help would be appreciated!

If that doesn't work, I'm not quite sure.
A combination of the Audio MIDI Utility (in Applications/Utilities), SoundSource, LineIn, and Soundflower (http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/) might work, otherwise I'm stumped. Your best bet is probably a dedicated external USB or FireWire audio interface.

  • Creating seperate audio input and audio output tracks?

I need a bit of advice on how to do this. I'm using a simple Lightsnake USB cable to hook my guitar directly into my computer, now i can record into the program but need to switch between the Unknown USB input and the built-in inputs to get sound. This has made monitoring tracks impossible and is pretty frustrating, any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Dennis
Logic Express seems to like a single source in and out, however you can get around this by going into Audio Midi Setup (Applications -> Utilities -> Audio Midi Setup) and creating an aggregate device with which you can choose separate input and output devices. Then, simply choose the aggregate device as your audio driver when you're back in Logic.
P.S. I assume this is still valid for LE8 as I havent got my copy yet
Good luck and may the force be with you

  • I have on;y one audio port can i use it for input and output at the same time?

i have the new macbook pro 13 in and i want to connect aguitar as input and output on an amp but i have only one audio port

You can't use the jack as an input and output simultaneously. The solution is to look for a USB or Firewire interface to get your guitar sound into the computer.

  • Input and output audio not working and no startup chime

The audio, both input and output, on my MacBook Pro has stopped working as well as the startup chime. Otherwise the computer starts up and seems to be working normally. Any ideas as to what the problem is and solutions?

Hey, my MacBook Pro has been doing the EXACT same thing off and on for a few weeks now.
I'm just now having time to browse the forums, so I've not even asked about it.
Yesterday it all started working normally - all sounds.
I'll follow this discussion for sure.
There definitely seems to be enough 'Mac-Daddy' Mac Helpers on here to be able to easily resolve this issue.
i.e.: Andreas!  Just reading her stuff lets me know she REALLY knows what she's talking about & is able to explain the highly advanced info in terms people actually get!
    Thanks for asking that question!
