Built-In Core Audio latency wierdness...
Hi all,
Could someone verify this for me please. Using just the Built-In inputs and outputs on a MacBook Pro:
1. Connect something to the line input. Connect speakers or headphones to the MacBook Pro outputs.
2. Start Logic. (Choosing Built-in core audio in audio prefs if necessary, with Software monitoring enabled. Use low-ish buffer size eg 256 samples.)
3. Rec-Enable an audio track from line input.
4. Check Audio throughput is as expected i.e. negligible latency.
5. Unplug headphone/output.
6. Re-Plug headphone/output
7. Latency is now around 1 second!! What the...?
If anyone else can verify this I'd be most grateful. If it's just me (and I hope it is) then I can set about sorting it out myself with re-installs or whatever....
The strange thing is that audio instrument latency remains normal - it's just the audio input --> output chain that seems to be affected. Pressing play seems to temporarily reset the buffers again, although I am sometimes getting clicks, pops and jitters.
Cheers,
Bryan
Hi,
Of course, I realize that the Built-In in/out is not sufficient for professional audio work.
I'm really trying to get to the bottom of serious general Core Audio problems that I've been experiencing with all my audio devices: Motu828mkII, IK-Multimedia Stealth Plug (A Guitar cable) and Built-In. You may remember this thread about latency issues when recalling Channel Strips saved as Performances.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4903770
Basically, core audio becomes totally unstable after recalling a channel strip saved as a Performance. Latency increases dramatically - until you press play again, which resets the latency, although core audio remains unstable i.e. glitches and other strangeness. Identical behaviour when plugging/unplugging headphone out.
I do hope I'm not whining too much, it's just that I'd like to be able to use MBP to process live guitar, and at the moment it is unstable.
Cheers,
Bryan.

Mac pro latency...core audio
While I wait for the Apogee Enseble to arrive, I am working a little bit using the core audio. There is a little more latency than I am used to @512 but the worst thing is everytime I press play I have to wait about 3 seconds before anything happens. Other functions seem to be delayed as well. I checked out Garageband and the latency was terrible, completely unusable, yet when I first tried it a few days previous it was fine.
Any suggestions would be great
2GB of Ram by the way and another 2 are on order.
7.2.2
10.4.7
Thanks
-AllanUse an extra HD for audio recording.
Done
Deactivate journaling for that.
Don't use plugins like Linear Phase EQ or AdLimiter.
Okay
You should be able to use 64 or even 32 as buffer
I will go down to 64
Don't run Logic under Rosetta.
How do I know if Logic is running under Rosetta? I am running 7.2.2.
Thanks for the help! -
The core audio for Logic 8 has stopped working.
I was successfully running Logic 8, Protools LE and Cubase on a MacPro with Leopard (10.5.5) and a MOTU traveler interface. I loaded on the Ignition Pack bundled with Protools LE (Mbox mini), including Melodyne/Reason/Live 6. This then stopped me opening any of my programs, Logic, Protools, Cubase and Garageband.
I have surfed several forums and found that Melodyne has caused the same problem for others. Following advice given on these forums I have...
- Deinstalled all new programmes, including all links, files, rewire stuff
- I have trashed Logic preferences
- I have completely reinstalled Logic
- I have updated the latest MOTU drivers and Apple software updates
I can open Logic using Ctrl and selecting 'no' to core audio, but when I change the core audio, either to MOTU or built-in, and enable Logic freezes and I have to force quit. I have read other threads with people having the same problem, but after following all the advice the problem is still there. Help!
Just for info: I cannot not open Cubase, Protools or Garageband, but there is no problem with standalone Kontakt 2, Itunes, Soundtrack Pro, Waveburner or Mainstage, using the MOTU.
Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Sounds like a problem with an incompatible version of either Melodyne or Rewire.
Rewire is used to connect application. Ex. Reason can run rewired into Logic, the audio output of Reason will appear as a separate audio channel in Logic.
Two choices... see if your version of Rewire can be upgraded to the latest version. (don't know if that's even compatible)
Remove Rewire from your system, move the rewire plugin out of it's folder, to the desktop. (run a search)
The other plugin that might be giving you problems is Melodyne, move the plugin to the desktop. Again, run a search to find this stuff.

How do I use 2 Core Audio devices at the same time in Logic w/out switching
Hello, I use the Aardvark Direct Mix usb3 as my audio interface for mic and guitar. I just upgraded to Logic Pro 7 today and was hoping someone could tell me how I could use the Built-in Audio Core Audio driver along with the Direct Mix USB Core Audio Driver at the same time without having to switch Core Audio Driver's and than rebooting Logic. It is very frustrating doing that as well as not being able to hear my Logic audio during playback/record mode when I am trying to record via the USB3. WHat can I do? Thanks! If ther are both core audio, why can I not just use both of them at the same time? Why must a switch back and forth? Thanks!
[email protected]THanks everyone! awsome article! Thanks for posting it, nh!
The weird thing is, once I go up to the Menu and select Open Aggregate Device Editor in the AUDIO/MIDI setup utility and try to add a new Aggregate Device setup (step # 6 from the link), the only audio device available is the "Built-in Audio". What's weird is when I have the main Audio MIDI Setup utility open, every single drop-down menu/tab has the "Direct Mix USB 3 1.0.9.1" device right beneath the "Built-in Audio" option. To me that says that the core audio device is indeed recognized by my computer (obviously since I can record with it using Logic). Can anyone help me with this one? Any suggestions?
Not that it should matter but, the hardware audio interface that I am using is made by the no-longer-existant company once known as Aardvark. I actually had to purchase a third party Core Audio driver just to have it recognized by OS X.
This is the website where I purchased my audio driver :
http://www.usb-audio.com/
A little more on how this device and it's core audio driver function within Logic . . . (Hopefully this might clarify something I may be screwing up) . . .
I launch Logic with its default Built-in Audio which allows playback of audio from the app. I than go up to Audio Hardware and Drivers and than drop the flip down Driver menu down to the second option, "Direct Mix USB 3 1.0.9.1." Logic than prompts me that I should try to (re)launch Logic Pro to load the appropriate CoreAudio.. I do that. Now I am ready to record guitar through the Direct Mix USB3, I just can't hear anything (unless I use head phones as an output from the Direct Mix).
Anyway, you all probably already knew what I meant so explaining that was pointless. But my question is, if the Driver is obviously recognized by my comp in both the Audio MIDI Setup and in Logic, than why won't the Direct Mix device show up as a possibility for setting up an aggregate device? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Digidesign Core Audio not working in Logic pro 7.1
Help! I'm not able to use Digidesign's (002 interface) as a core-audio interface for Logic Pro 7. Pro-Tools works fine with the 002. Logic works fine with built-in interface. However whenever I go to change from the built-in audio interface to the core audio 002 interface in audio drivers (in preferences), it won't allow me and I get the following message:
"Audio device has been removed" (press OK) then
"Previously selected audio interface is not available" (Press OK) (digidesign 002 interface has double brackets around the name in the audio drivers). If you try to relaunch driver again it disappears from the drivers list? In addition the "Digi design core-audio " application that opens up on the dock - just says "not connected" and some buttons are greyed out and you cannot "reconnect"?
Is there a conflict of drivers with the OS/Logic version and digi core-audio? I'm running Pro-Tools ver6.4, with digi core-audio 6.9 (updated from 6.4 - didn't solve the issue?), Logic Pro 7.1 and OS 10.3.9 (on a G4 1.25Ghz, 512Ram)?
It seems like a core-audio driver problem - but having updated to the latest version I'm still not getting any joy? Any offers?! Cheers.Check the FW cable.
Anyway about compatibility Digidesign says this:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Not Supported
With ALL versions of Pro Tools 6.x for Panther (other than Pro Tools LE 6.8.1 with Mbox 2 hardware only), the highest version of Mac OS X 10.3 that you should use is Mac OS X 10.3.8. There are incompatibilities with Pro Tools 6 and QuickTime 7, which is installed by Mac OS X 10.3.9. If you must use Mac OS X 10.3.9 for some reason, you should revert to QuickTime 6.5.2, available from the Apple website.

I would be interested if any other Powerbook Titanium user has come across the same problem I am having with core audio.
I can only explain the problem as "a stall" or glitch in the sound output. It is very irregular but very annoying. It happens when playing tracks through iTunes and also when I am playing my guitar through Garage Band. The problem seems to be internal as I have the problem with external speakers & earphones.
Unfortunately it is difficult to hear the glitch through the on board speakers.
My battery packed up over a year ago, as they do, haven't replaced it so run off power pack.
ANY IDEAS OUT THERE ?Which model TiBook do you have? How much RAM is installed? Do you know the speed of your hard drive? What is your hard drive capacity? How much free space do you have on it, now?
From my experience, I find that you can get "glitchy" audio when your hard drive is too slow, too fragmented, too full, or is failing. You can also get the same kind of glitches if you don't have enough RAM, or if your CPU is on the slower side. Aside from those rather simple-to-fix causes, it's possible that the sound board (built-in to the logic board on TiBooks, I think) is bad. That would mean you'd have to replace the entire logic board, which is pretty expensive (less so if you can do it yourself.)
One way to rule out the hard drive would be to run Disk Utilities, to see if the disk is ok, and then running a defragmentation program, such as the one that comes with Norton Utilities. You could also try deleting old, unnecessary files, if your drive is too full. Finally, if you don't have a defrag program, back up your hard drive, reformat it, and only reinstall the programs/files that relate to the problem. You could also install more RAM, but if the problem is not RAM-related, you'd be out the cost of the new RAM and still be at square one.
When did the problem start? Did it start after you installed a new program? Sometimes problems can be caused by software issues, so if you first noticed it after installing something (anything) new, delete it. If the problem goes away, you might be ok.
I hope this has been somewhat helpful. Good luck! -
'Core Audio Overload' with Halion Symphonic Orchestra
I use a G5 2.5Ghz Quad with 6GB of RAM. I have 59 tracks open on my Autoload that I whittle down during mix time by comping the various instruments and generally never have a problem.
I installed Steinberg's Halion Symphonic Orchestra and have been experiencing Core Audio Overloads frequently since then. Watching the performance, I had 64% of my processor power idle and 1.79GB of RAM free when it last occurred. I'm stumped!
I may be wrong, but I think with that much Idle system resource I should be able to get away with an I/O Buffer size of 512 to avoid latency? It will run fine in 24 bit on 1024 or 16 bit in 512. I used to find the I/O buffer at 64 was enough.
Steinberg are as interested in my query as a monkey reading poetry - the helpline guy even told me he hadn't configured his software properly, so unfortunately could not help. Hilarious. Steinberg have no Genius's apparently.
Halion aside, does anyone else have this problem where system resource seems adequate but Core Audio is still overloading?Have a look at my post - Core Audio Overload...
Similar problems with the Vienna Instruments - and again, I'm simply stumped. I vaguely remember this happening less with OSX 4.8, but that may be a dream of times gone by when such things didn't seem to frustrate me as much as they do now.
I have everything maxed out on the buffer side and still to no avail. Certainly, when I did a DiskWarrior rebuild it help for a while. My most recent one, however, told me that it couldn't replace my drive because it was too severely damaged. Had to Clone it to keep the repaired version. Running out of places to put all my back-ups.
Am about to re-install entire operating system and Logic and see if that helps. Will return to my post and update it if things do improve.

What does Core Audio mean?
Friends -
While recording from a tuner/cassette player direct to my line-in input in Cacaphony, Audicity and even Garage Band 3 (while studying chapter 1 of the CD for Mary Plummer's Garage Band 3 book) I have received the following dialog box after my machine locked up "Core Audio - Disc is too slow - (Write) (-10002). My question is why - how to fix (I'm not a techie)?
Thanks,
Lindsey

Core Audio is the built-in "infrastructure," if you will, or advanced audio in OS X.
How much RAM do you have installed?

Logic Freezes During Playback w/ Core Audio Error
I'm trying to mix a song in Logic 9.1.7, but it has gotten to the point where Logic immediately freezes as soon as I hit the playback button in order to actually listen to my project. Before this I was occasionally getting the Sudden Motion Sensor/ Core Audio Error. I have increased the buffer size to 1024 and set the buffer range to large. I am currently using a Macbook Pro which is not connected to the interface, so this shouldn't be a problem. However, I use a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 interface. The only third party plu-in that I am currently running on the project is the Focusrite Plug-in Suite - which I think might be the problem, considering that my other laptop is runing the same plug-in and having the exact same error. I already tried downloading every relevant software patch and update from the Focusrite website, all to no avail. I have been running Logic along with this plug-in, for over 2 years now and have never once had this problem. I haven't had any problem running Pro Tools, so obviously this problem is specific to Logic. This is incredibly frustrating, and I need this resolved soon. I have a deadline that I must meet by the end of the week.
Update: I just tried running Logic in 64-bit mode. It played for maybe a second and then gave me an error indicating that the plug-in suite was keeping it from running properly. Guess I was right. I will put that error report log above the initial one I recieved while stil running 32-bit.

Can I use a Protools HD interface as core audio for Logic 9?
I am moving to a studio that already has Protools HD running on Mountain Lion.
I don't especially like PT, so my question is... can I just use the PT HD hardware already there and run Logic and my AU plugs without using TDM?
And if I do, how would it compare to the RME Fireface 800 I am currently using?
Or would I be better off taking the RME and switching between the units depending on who was driving in the studio?
Thanks in anticipationYes, higher latency...
Avid/Digidesign never put a lot of effort into their core audio drivers because they would rather have you purchase their hardware which uses proprietary drivers.
There is an I/O limit but from the looks of it you won't be coming close.
Offhand I'd say you will be missing the RME hardware but it may work for you.
Keep us posted as to how it's going. -
Keeps crashing on start up! Can start without core audio, but crashes with!
Hello
I've run into a strange problem, when starting Logic it keeps on crashing after core audio initialize. I have tried starting whilst holding control to select start without core audio. This works and the app starts, i then go to audio preferences to select a audio driver to use. This is the strange bit i think?
It only gives me my audio input options, Built MIC, Built Input/ Built Input Aggregated. It does not give me an output option. I recall this not being normal? I am right or wrong here?
I also have a motu 828 which when connected and selected also crashes the program. It was all working fine one day and not the other, i have tried a reinstall twice also. I have no idea of what is happening so any insight and help would be great.I have finally solved the problem. Do not use melodyne with LOGIC 8 it will not work! To run both on the same machine the melodyne rewire files must be removed from application support.

Logic pro 9 quit unexpectedly while initializing Core audio
i've installed my logic studio 9 and it does not work, it quits unexpectedly while initializing Core audio I am using mbox 2 mini but i don't like protools, i deleted it. I've installed the digidesign standalone core audio drivers 8.0.3 which is compatible with my OS, but logic pro doesnt launch, soundtrack pro works and waveburner does too, mainstage and logic pro do not. I've configurated system preferences/sounds and mbox2 mini appears right. I've configurated applications/utilities/audio midi setup and everything is correct , system preferences/ mbox2 says "connected to mbox 2 mini" so if everything is correct why it doesnt work in logic pro and with soundtrack works perfectly? OMG it drives me nuts already... i tried also run logic pro without audio interface, just with "built in" device. it didn't work too. i launched it pressing control(without launch core audio) in audio settings appears mbox2 mini but doesnt work. I did read in a forum "you should delete logic's preference file" .... didn't work too.... like i said can't deal anymore with this issue. please HELP!!

Hi -
I just got my new 2 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac up and running but I don't get any sound from it. The boot chime works, but by the time it is all up there's no sound at all. The speaker icon disappears when I click it and the button for it on the preferences page gets unselected. Another thread said to boot Garage Band for a fix, but that gives me a Core Audio Error Code -2 dialog box. Also, nothing will play in iTunes either. Did any of you ever have this and/or know a way around it?You may need to adjust the configuration in Audio MIDI Setup.
From Mac Help in the Finder Help menu;
You can use Audio MIDI Setup to configure the audio input and output devices you use with your computer...open Audio MIDI Setup, in Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup.
The default setting for Properties For: Built-in Output should be Source: Internal speakers, 44100.0 Hz, 2ch-24bit -
Core audio stutter after user migration (with system settings)
my girlfriends mbp recently fried its logicboard. Shes got a new 13" now, but migrated her user to my mbp in the while waiting. She also imported the system settings (machine name was changed) and since then my core audio is messed up. I use a Tascam US-122, Motu 828MK2 and Digi 003 and at the moment only the Motu and built-in audio drivers work normally. The other two stutter. Re-installing drivers for the devices did not help.
Any advice on what to trash or should i try to install 10.6 on top of this again?
This is a 3 month old install and i'm not keen on doing it again.anybody?

Garage Band 09 Changes Core Audio
I upgraded to Garage Band 09 on my aluminum 20", 2.4G Core 2 Duo, 2-GB RAM iMac. I record through a Lexicon Omega USB interface.
The Lexicon Omega has three possible USB interfaces: Channels 1-2 I/O; Channels 3-4 I only; and Mac USB. One chooses the interface using Audio MIDI Setup.app. I chose the first option above, which was the default offered by the app to set the Mac's core audio system.
I then launched the new Garage Band and, using GB's metronome for tempo, laid down four guitar tracks. Very nice and easy!
I then wanted to include a software drum loop. As soon as I chose it, GB said it had to download 1.1 GB of updates. OK...I did so. Relaunching GB, I now had my loops, but the audio input, under "Preferences", was now Mac USB. No external others were available. The guitar input now had insufferable latency.
Please don't offer to tell me to do all of the anti-latency things. Bottom line is it worked, and now it doesn't.
I can quit GB, launch Audi MIDI Setup, and set it again to Channels 1-2 USB. But as soon as I launch GB, it changes it to Mac USB with no other choices.
Why is a program such as GB allowed to change a core system setting? How do I fix it? It has ruined my ability to use the program.I have the same equipment you do, and have been encountering similar problems. Sometimes I've had Channels 1-2 available, sometimes Mac USB, and sometimes, as right now, Audio Midi Setup cannot connect to the Lexicon Omega at all, although its icon still shows.
USB is finicky, and with a dozen USB devices it can be a trouble-shooting nightmare. I'm going to look for a firmware update for the Omega. I have a Logitech Harmony Universal Remote (USB, IR, with an RF Extender) which was nearly unusable for two years until a recent firmware update corrected the connection problems.
Please, let me know if you learn anything!
