Built-In Dictionary

Hello. Simply, my dictionary does not "find any entries". Just basically stopped working. I has also effected my dictionary widget. Have no clue what to do. Any help is appreciated.

Hello,
Perhaps this is a corrupted preference file. Locate this file: com.apple.dictionary.plist
It's here: /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file, drag it to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Your Mac will create a new pref file for you the next time you open the Dictionary application.
See if that helps...
Carolyn

  • The built-in dictionary on my iPad only works with certain sites.  What do I need to do so that I can it all the time. (For example, it does not work when I read e-newspaper.)

    What do I need to do so that I can use the built-in dictionary all the time? My iPad 2's dictionary functions on Japanese e-newspapers but not on the Arizona Republic or other e-newspapers.

    Are you talking about the English dictionary?  Mine seems to work ok on the AZ republic web page.  Does yours not work on all webpages?  Does it not work when you type an English word in Notes and then do select and define?

  • Built-in dictionary not showing

    Hey all , how are you ?
    The built-in dictionary not working !!
    It was working before but i don't know what happend ! I formated my iphone and then restored it from itune and when i went to notes and highlighted a word and clicked on define , it told me to download it and i was using 3G network and it told me to use wifi , and now when i'm using wifi The "define" button isn't showing !! What's wrong !!? And i reset settings but it didn't work ! What's the problem ?

    Sounds like either there is something plugged into the 3.5mm Audio Output port or the micro switch inside of the port is stuck.
    If have something plugged into the Audio Output port, try unplugging and replugging it in several times to see if the internal micro switch will reset from Digital to normal Output.
    If not, then you may need to contact your local AASP and take the Mac Mini in for service.

  • Multi-language support for built-in dictionary

    Hi,
    Could anyone tell me if the built-in dictionary in iOS supports multi-language environment? Say, for now the dictionary explains an English word in English, is it possible to have it explain German or French words in English?
    Thanks in advance!

    No, the built in Dictionary is only English-English and Japanese-Japanese.

  • Built in dictionary missing after ios6

    My built-in dictionary is missing after updating to IOS6
    When I double tap on a word and click "define" button it brings up the "dictionary" block and it says inside the block "would you like to download a dictionary now?"
    I then click the "download" button and it looks like it tries to download it, but I don't see the blue progress bar.
    It then comes up with a message "no definition found"
    Any suggestions on a fix, or if this is a bug that can only be rectified with an update?? I have another iPad and it is running iOS 6 and has a working dictionary.
    HELP.

    On my iPad 3, English and German dictionaries don't work, and the proposed solutions don't help.

    At the moment no - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4059 says :
    iBooks allows you to look up the definition of words using a built-in English or Japanese language dictionary
    So it looks like just the two languages are currently supported

  • Bulk add words in highlighted text to built-in dictionary

    Is there a 3rd party utility, OSX Service, or AppleScript that would allow me to highlight a block of text (might be a full document) ... parse out all the words, and add any words not in the built-in dictionary to the built-in dictionary ... ideally with a list of automatically added words.
    Use case: I'm working with a bunch of technical docs that have been editorially reviewed and spell checked on other systems. When I go to edit these documents on my OSX Mavericks applications, tons of correctly spelled words show up as misspelt. Manually clicking through many pages of content to add new words is not efficient.
    I googled this question and learned that I could manually edit my list of words in ~/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary. That's a good tip, but I'm looking for the word parsing, dictionary check, and dictionary add workflow not just the location of the dictionary.

    Hi Julian,
    Is this you asking?
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    app.findTextPreferences.findWhat = "figure";
    var found = doc.findText();
    for(var i =0;i<found.length;i++)
            doc.xmlElements[0].xmlElements.add({markupTag:"figure", xmlContent:found[i]});

  • Adding Other Dictionary to Built In Dictionary

    I want to add Chinese - English and English - Chinese dictionary to the built in Dictionary thats made by Apple (Version 2.2.1). I searched all over the web for how to do this and obtain the dictionary I need; however, most of the instructions I get over google have dead links. I searched the APP store as well but the dictionarys there have their own stand alone applications.
    I truely believe Apple didn't make Dictionary just for the few languages, I wish they provided an easy way to download new languages from the application :/

    Apple did make a dictionary development kit so third parties could do whatever they want, but unfortunately it has not attracted interest from publishers.  Have you tried the stuff mentioned here?

  • Is there an app that adds medical terms to the built in dictionary?

    We use the iPad at work and it would be helpful for things like medications and medical terms if there was an APP that added common ones to the built in dictionary. Thanks for the imput

    One of my most favorite apps, Drafts, has arrows on its on screen keypad. Drafts has been my go to app for any text entry for about a year. The interface is beautiful, it syncs with the iPhone version and, from the app it only takes a couple of taps to move whatever you've typed to whatever app you want to use it in. Another big plus is that it supports TextExpander.
    Best of luck.

  • Does the iPad come with a built-in dictionary?

    Does the iPad come with a built-in dictionary? I sure can't find it! I like the built-in dictionary on my iMac. Why does not the iPad have one?

    So, the iMac dictionary also give us translation, because we have activated a second language in System Preferences...there is apparently no way to get this function with built in Apple apps on the iPad, I assume, from your reply...
    Thank you!

  • Transcription definition for ipad built-in dictionary in iBooks

    Could you please give me information where i can find Pronunciation Symbols (transcription definition) for ipad built-in dictionary in iBooks?

    Take a look at the ios4 upgrade for the iPad coming in November, keyboard and dictionary.
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/software-update/
    I don't know if this means a separate dictionary for the iPad. If so, I dough third party apps will have access to the dictionary. Third party app developers would probably need to build a dictionary function into their app. Who knows...? We won't untill ios4 comes out.
    You can give Apple feedback for the ipad about you idea:
