Built in ethernet not showing in network preferences

A friend has been experiencing random dropouts via airport, as a workaround she has been using a direct cable to the adsl router from time to time. Now all of a sudden she cannot see the ethernet anymore.
In network preferences ethernet is not displayed in the network status, regardless of whether a cable is inserted or not.
About this mac lists an ethernet adaptor and ethernet is enabled in the network port configurations in the preferences.
Dis/enabling the ethernet in network port configurations has no effect neither does repair disk permissions.
The machine is less than a year old, fully updated and still under warranty, anything else she can try?

did you fixed the problem?
i am having something like you where the ethernet worked for a while and then it was greyed out... and i went as far as formating my computer and reinstalling os x... but now the computer thinnks i don't have a ethernet card...

  • Built in Ethernet not showing up

I'v got a 15inch Power book running 10.4.3 In my network settings the Built in Ethernet option is not showing up. I plug in a working ethernet cable (works fine with other powerbooks) and the computer can not detect a connection. Run network setup assistant and it can't make a connection.
    Help.

This is my 5th post on my problem and I've received only one response--and that was just to tell me to post my question somewhere else. So here I am again.
When I go to Sys Preferences and Network. I pull up TCP/IP and there are no visible addresses. Network Status is all blank. What's the deal with my ethernet connection?
    Anyone?

  • Thunderbolt ethernet not showing up in network preferences

this is happening with both my thunderbolt display and thunderbolt<->ethernet adaptor....
the ether net in the t-bolt display WAS working.... but was having probs with the ethernet adaptor while on the road, so I tried deleting the thunderbolt ethernet entry from the Network Preferences panel.  Well, now when I hook up my thunderbolt Display, the option doesn't re-appear!  So now I'm thinking there's something in the system that's keeping that from re-appearing in the network preference panel, and it could be the reason for both items not working.
The controller is recognized at a low level by the system - in system report I get:
    Apple 57761-B0:
      Name:          ethernet
      Type:          Ethernet Controller
      Bus:          PCI
      Slot:          Thunderbolt Slot 2@11,0,0
      Vendor ID:          0x14e4
      Device ID:          0x16b0
      Subsystem Vendor ID:          0x106b
      Subsystem ID:          0x00f1
      Revision ID:          0x0010
      Link Width:          x1
      BSD name:          en2
      Kext name:          AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext
      Firmware version:          57761-a1.48, 0x2fe676f9
      Location:          /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleB CM5701Ethernet.kext
      mDNS offload capable:          c8:2a:14:4f:a3:90
      Version:          3.2.4b8
So it's a problem with the Network Preferences panel getting loaded, somehow.   I tried re-creating the kext cache, that didn't help.
Digging around a little in the system, I see this:
    cd /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/
    $ ls
    AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext          AppleYukon2.kext
    AppleIntel8254XEthernet.kext          IOEthernetAVBController.kext
    AppleUSBEthernet.kext                    Intel82574L.kext
    AppleUSBGigEthernet.kext          nvenet.kext
But I'm out of ideas how to get the thunderbolt ethernet option back into the Network Preference panel.  help?!

I also tried disconnecting the display and adding it back and rebooting - nothing worked.
But here's a bizarre twist: I show "Bluetooth PAN" connected and active, and it's coming from the Thunderbolt display! I can get online. Then I disconnect the network cable from the display, and test again - no network. So somehow, the driver for Bluetooth PAN is totally confused with the display Ethernet. In fact, the Bluetooth PAN shows connected, and "No PAN devices found". So I'm connected to a phantom device.
Maybe deleting the PAN and display, adding back the display, will get it to recognize it properly.
The short of it is I have Ethernet connected now through the display, but using the Bluetooth PAN device driver.

  • Photoshop CS6 is not showing any network drives within windows 8.1.

Photoshop CS6 is not showing any network drives within windows 8.1, I can only browse the local disk for files. Please advise?
And when i try opening a file directly from the network, photoshop starts but does not open the selected file?

The dialog you show there looks like it may be a CS6 open dialog running on windows 8.1 that is showing what is local.  Network is not highlighted selected.
Here is a CC Open one windows 7 pro showing  areas of what is accessible.

  • JHeadstart not showing in Tools/Preferences

    JHeadstart not showing in Tools/Preferences.
I have done exact as in instructions.:
Unzip JHeadstart10.1.2.0.x.zip (using folder names) to a folder of your choice, >>for example C:\JHeadstart (in the next steps referred to as <JHeadstartHome>). I have unzipped to c:\case\jheadstart
Find out in which folder JDeveloper 10.1.2 is installed (in the next steps
    referred >>>to as <JDeveloperHome>).
In <JHeadstartHome>\config\jdevaddins you will find a number of JAR files,
which need to be installed as plug-ins for JDeveloper. Create a new
directory <JDeveloper_Home>\jdev\lib\ext\jheadstart and copy the JAR files
to that directory: You have now extended the JDeveloper 10g IDE with
JHeadstart specific functionality! My jdev directory is:
    C:\jdev_extract\jdev\
    I have created a directory: C:\jdev_extract\jdev\lib\ext\jheadstart
If you want to be able to use JHeadstart Designer Generator: in
<JHeadstartHome>\config\jdevaddins you will also find a file named
migration.xml. This file must be copied to the system directory of
    JDeveloper, for example: <JDeveloperHome>\jdev\system10.1.2.0.0.1811.
The exact name of this directory depends on the build number of JDeveloper. There was no such directory I created a directory called:
    C:\jdev_extract\jdev\system10.1.3.36.73
Because I have JDev version 10.1.3.36.73 copy the *.xml in their.
I have tried all other "extensions" name like directories and copy the
migration.xml in their as well. Still did not show under
    Tools/migration
As the last step, we have to tell the plug-ins where the JHeadstart Home is. Start JDeveloper 10.1.2, go to the menu option Tools - Preferences, select the category "JHeadstart Settings" and enter the JHeadstart Home. It should report a valid JHeadstart Home and show the version and build number.

This is probably better off posted in the JHeadstart forum but from your post you seem to be trying to use JDev 10.1.3 with JHeadstart as far as I'm aware a 10.1.3 compatible version of JHeadstart has not yet been released and you must therefore use JDeveloper 10.1.2 if you want to use JHeadstart.

    Lisa

  • Satellite not showing wireless networks, adapter seems ok

my satellite is not showing wireless networks and i can't figure out what networks are available. the adapter seems to be working properly according to windows device manager. i had to uninstall configfree, although i'm not sure that caused any problem. i have had to run a bunch of anti-spyware programs, registry cleaners etc., system seems much better but a few glitches.

It's possible, but it might be a lot more work to do so.  It all depends on how soon you need to get it fixed.  I'm not a network specialist so I can't really offer much in the way of assistance other than what I already did.  It's possible someone else might have other ideas, but since you didn't post this in the Networking and WiFi Forum where it belongs it's quite possible that those networking specialists will never even see your post to respond to it.  I know that I rarely go into the Networking Forum as it isn't my strong suit.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Built in ethernet not working on some networks

Ok i have read everything there is to read, that i can find, i have asked a mac specialist, and after all of this i am still baffled. I have been connecting to the internet from the vary first day that i received my mbp, via wireless and ethernet. There have been no problems until i go to work and try to connect through the built in ethernet.
I have received three different status messages when i try and play with the settings, one says
The cable for built in ethernet is connected, but your computer does not have an ip address and cannot connect to the internet.
Built in Ethernet is currently active. built in ethernet has a self assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet
built-in ethernet is currently active and has the ip address
well with all of these messages my internet doesnt work.
I then go home plug in my cable there and it works fine.
Why cant life be easy...please help i am at my wits end

I have this same problem (and error messages) using the wired ethernet at work with my MBP. I turn off to travel to work, connect sucessfully to ethernet but when the MBP sleeps I loose the IP address. I have to go into Network preferences and switch from "automatic" to another location and then back to "automatic" to get the network IP address to re-populate. This did not occur when I first got the MBP, but started a few weeks later. I used powerbook G4 on this network with no issues for over a year. Never have an issue using wireless. I think I have used wired connection in a hotel without issues. Could it be something related to this network?

  • AirPort does not show under System Preferences Network Show

    Hello,
I am having problems with my AirPort Express. It is listed in AirPort Admin Utility (with an IP Address), but does not show up under System Preferences > Network > Show.
How can I get the AirPort recognized?
    Thanks,
    Fidelio

In System under "Network" it shows "AirPort Card" with "No information found"
Your Mac does not have a wireless card installed or it is not working.
However, I would like to set up a shared printer and instructions I have for this say that I need to get the IP address of AirPort under System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort.
That information should have nothing to do with a printer since the information there relates to your Mac... not to the AirPort Express (AX).

  • Built in Ethernet not being recongnized

I have a Mac Pro Tower 2.66 version 1.1, 2006 model and the built in Ethernet in not being seen by the system. I have tried multiple things to get it to work but I'm about positive it's a logic board issue. I tried tons of tips, throwing away Network.plist files and others suggestions but still it's not showing up. I also put in a new ethernet card and it still wouldn't show up. I installed a new system on a clean drive and booted from it and it has the same issues so I don't see it being a preference. System profiler shows no ethernet at all on the computer.
So my issues aren't that I can't connect to the internet because I installed a Airport card after the issue started so I at least have access to my network. My problem is that the Mac App Store looks like it requires you to have a ethernet card which has a MAC Address built into the ethernet card and that is how it recognizes the computer. iTunes works fine because it must have some other identification method but I can't get the Mac App Store, iCloud or iTunes Match to work. It won't recognize my Apple id on the Mac App Store or iCloud, but iTunes recognize may Apple id and it works fine and it also works on all of my iDevices.
So here is the delema I can't update Apps that I bought on the Mac App Store, nor can I download new apps and some of the Apps I bought won't work because it can't identify my computer with the Apple id to show I purcased the App.
I have talked to tech support and all they do is tell me to scan the Apple Support Communities which I have and many web searches too. I have seen that this model Mac Pro must be prone to having issues with built in Ethernet failing, but I haven't found a work around to log into the App Store. So I am hoping someone knows a way to get around the Ethernet MAC Address issue, maybe trick the system into thinking it has a ethernet card or just a different way for the App Store to identify the computer.
    Thanks for any help,
