Built in iSight camera will not show on iChat or PhotoBooth

When logging on to these applications I get the same message " Camera being used by other application" but cannot find any others that would be using it. How can I get around this problem? Thanks anyone?

  • Built Flash Video and will NOT show in Hosted Environment

Built Flash Video and will NOT show in Hosted Environment.
The files generated work on development machine. I posted the same
files in hosted environment and flash will not show. I first
thought it was Vista 64 IE 7 so I switched to XP IE7 and same
results. Still it is strange the falsh works locally. I am sure it
is something simple that I am missing. Any help would be
    appreciated. Thank you.

Nickels55, I appreciate the response. Here are the
interesting facts. I had my hosting provider apply the mime type
and restart IIS. No flash video. I have Vista x64 Ultimate with I
think IIS 7 (the default IIS that comes with the OS.) The flash
video would not show in that environment until I applied the MIME
and then it WORKED. Yeah! But I still don’t have it working
on my web hosting provider with server Win2003. I thought it was
the hosting provider but I posted on my work server Win 2003 and
changed the MIME with a reset and could not get the video to work
    there either.
I would like to try another angle here. Again I am using the
wizard to encode and publish the flash video. Maybe I don’t
have a settings correct. I can approach this a few ways.
1.) I can send my video to someone to post on their Win2003
server and see if they can get it going.
2.) Someone send me a short 3 second video that they produced
that they know it works on Win2003.
3.) Any other ideas? Surely someone in this universe has used
the flash wizard to encode a video and published to a Win2003
    server. :)
I guess the other thing to note is when creating the flash
video I chose no controls (play, stop, pause). I want the video to
start when someone accesses the page for the first time.
Thank you for the help everyone.

  • Built in iSight camera no longer showing up or recognized by iMac

Hello there - I have a white 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with a built in iSight camera, and the camera is no longer showing up, or is not recognized by the computer any longer. Very strange! The little green LED by the camera is not lit any longer, and the camera is not recognized any longer by Photo Booth, iChat AV, or any of the other apps that would use the camera. This is a real pain, because I am leaving for France in a couple days and am taking my MacBook Pro with me, and am hoping that I can use iChat AV to talk to my kids at home on the iMac. I do have an extra iSight camera that I have hooked up to the iMac and can use in a pinch, but I really want to use the built in camera on the iMac. Any hints / ideas / suggestions on what to do for this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No, unfortunately that did not help. I did the following...
    1. See if the issue is application-specific. - Nope. Camera is not recognized in any of the apps that it should be recognized in, I tested iChat AV, PhotoBooth, ImageCapture, and iMovie.
    2. See if the issue is user-specific. - There's only one user account on this Mac, so I couldn't do that.
    3. Find out if the computer recognizes the iSight. I went into System Profiler and checked the USB profiler, and the camera does not show up.
    4. Reset SMC or PMU. These just looked like different ways of restarting, which I did multiple times.
I have also run my Software Updates (on OS 10.5, which I did with a clean install from an OS 10.5 DVD by the way) and still no camera. This problem started happening with the original OS 10.4 (which it came with) and I was hoping a clean install of the OS would help, but no.
I'm wondering if resetting the PRAM might help, but I can't remember those keys you hold down while restarting (was it Apple-Option-P-R ?) or if that is just reaching waaaaay back to the pre OSX days.
Here's the kicker though - if I plug in a FireWire iSight camera, all is well. I'm really hoping that the camera isn't jsut dead, but it's starting to look that way. Would Disk First Aid or maybe DiskWarrior help?

  • Camera will not show for import in managed account

In my administrator and one managed account, when I connect my kodak digital camera it displays for import. In another managed account despite enabling access to image capture, selecting iphoto for import in image capture and fixing permissions, neither image capture or iphoto show the kodak camera for import. I also tried removing the preference files from that user's library for iphoto and image capture. Help!

    Hi ckauf49!
    Thanks for the post.
The camera may not show an image on the LCD screen if the camera is not set for live view shooting.  However, it will always display the menu on the screen if you press the MENU button.  If it does not, then the camera will need to be serviced.  To start this process, you'll need to complete a Repair Request on our website.

...from my network anyway! I have firewall turned off on my MBP, my wireless router settings have firewall settings off AND my ISP (DSL) router firewall settings are off. It works on my network at the office but any time I try to connect (one-way or otherwise) from home, no dice.
    Anyone have any tips?

    Hi Ken,
In this case the modem itself is routing to your LAN.
This will almost certainly mean that the ports needed for iChat will have to be opened. (See Rj's first post re Firewall and Ports)
By default most domestic devices that route have ports up to port 1024 open. This allows common apps like Web browsing and mail to work "Out-of-the-Box".
iChat uses a total of 29 ports for iChat to work with AIM, Jabber and Bonjour.
They also use two interent protocols as well.
    TCP 5190, 5220, 5222, 5223, 5298
    UDP 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403
More on why and which does which here http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page3.html
In your Network Preferences it will list a "router" IP towards the bottom. This should be the default IP to use in a Web Browser to access the modem's set up pages.
This page http://portforward.com/routers.htm may list your device. By clicking it you will come to a list of Applications and Games that you can also click on.
This will lead to a specific set of instructions for that APP.
Currently that site does not have the right ports for iChat (it used to).
However at the top of the page it will give you instructions on how to access the device with default User ID and Passwords as well as the IP.
Next we have to know if the 192.168.xxx.xxx IP that you computer gets is given out from the modem by it doing DHCP.
(you have one level of DHCP to the ISP that by the nature of the modem stops there)
IF the modem is doing DHCP to the LAN then we have to make sure it or the Wireless router are not doing it.
iChat does not like it when two devices on a LAN are doing DHCP (The nature of routers is that they allow the passing of addressing data through. This creates subnets.
    Modem to Computer via router
    Router to computer.
As the router is "closer" you only see this IP in the Network prefs. In some circumstances you may want to use two IPs, but iChat is not one of them.
If we know the Modem make and Model and the same for the wireless router we could point you at more direct info.
The goal is to have only 1 DHCP server and one instance of NAT
Network Address Translation (NAT) is how the modem and router move data arriving on one IP number to the number(s) on the other side of the device. There are about 6 main ways of doing this which in iChat's case can lead to problems betewwn either end. Port Forwarding, Port Triggering and DMZ are all use NAT
Now unfortunately differnt routing devices do different things when you change the settings.
Turning Off DHCP in an Apple Airport device makes it a Wireleess Access Point. It allows any addressing from the modem to control the LAN.
Most other devices, if you turn Off DHCP, require that you set Static addresses.
Static addressing limits the data from one device to the next.
To acheive the goal of avoiding NAT being done twice you may need to use Static addressing with UPnP (a non NAT way of opening the port) between the devices.
    Modem <-> Router <-> computer
This is two subnets but they are closed and independent of each other.
I know this is a lot of info. It can be shorter if we know what devices you have.

  • My built in isight camera is not working since loading mavericks

Can anyone help me please? I can't seem to get the isight built in camera to work on my 27'' imac since I installed Mavericks. First noticed this when using skype but it also doesn't work on facetime either.
    Any suggestions.
    Thank you
    Nick

If restarting Mac does not resolve the problem, use Disk Utility in OS X Revovery  to repair your startup disk.
If the camera is still not working properly, follow Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 suggestions.
(Over time, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD."  Regardless of the name of your Mac's built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)
If the problem the problem continues after using all the above, the last thing you can try is to reinstall OS X 10.9.
If that fails, too, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

For any iSight problems, first try restarting the Mac. If the problems persist, try all relevant suggestions from:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If your iSight problem still occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if your built-in iSight still does not work after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, and if iSight does not show as a USB hardware device in your Mac's System Profiler utility, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

  • Built in isight camera not working with flash

My built in isight camera on my macbook works just fine in photobooth and in skype or ichat.. but just in the past week or so, it will not work when im on websites that use flash. I've seen some threads that say that I need to go into settings and make sure that the camera chosen is the USB. When i go into flash settings, the only options are Google1, Google2, or Built in isight. It doesn't work with any of them. Does anyone have any idea how I can make it work again?

Your problem is not the same as that posted by the OP, and your system info shows you using Mac OS X (10.5.6).
For your symptoms with this system, I suggest you do the following:
    (1) Apply the 10.5.8 Combo Update using the following process:
      • Backup your Mac and turn off Time Machine
      • Disconnect peripherals and restart Mac
      • Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
      • Download and install
       http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
      • Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that finishes the update.
      • Test whether Flash works for you now.
(• Turn Time Machine on later when you are satisfied that the update worked.)
    (2) After applying the 10.5.8 Combo, if you are still having problems, download and install the latest Flash player compatible with your system:
      http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
Also check any other third-party browser plugins or other add ons. Apply all available updates and uninstall any third-party items that are known to be incompatible with your system.

    On this page
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS2472
iMovie '08: Built-in iSight camera not recognized
    it says:
    In Finder, navigate to /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/
Select the file com.apple.mio.VDCAssistant.plist and delete.
    Restart your system.
You should now be able to use your iSight camera with iMovie.
However, in Yosemite, it only has this file name
    com.apple.cmio.VDCAssistant.plist
and I don't want to delete it as instructed without someone who knows telling me it won't hurt my newly installed and thus far working well OS 10.10.1, with iMovie 7.1.4 on my iMac 24 inch, Early 2008, 2.8 GHz Intel Dore 2 Duo, 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2  SDRAM.  It worked with Leopard, and I don't recall having to use the above mentioned support page.

Contact Apple. I believe you have a hardware issue there if it's not showing up in your System profiler.

  • IMovie 6.0.3 does not recognize built in iSight Camera on new iMac

New iMac, Intel, OS 10.5.4, QT 7.5.
Built in Camera works with Photo Booth, the new iMovie 7.1.3 and iChat.
iMovie HD 6.0.3 or 6.0.4 does not recognize the camera. Opening a new project results in a No Camera Connected error. I have tried selecting various options in the video format drop down when creating a new project. I have repaired permissions, tried it under various users, removed the imovie plist, reinstalled imovie (both 6.0.3 and 6.0.4) without success. All 10 of the new computers are exhibiting this problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.

That is not an option that I can select on the imac's. On my iBook under 10.5.4 with iMovie HD 6.0.3 or 6.0.4 I can click on the triangle next to the camera icon and select the built in iSight camera. On the new iMacs that does not work. The built in iSight is not listed as an option.
