Built-in iSight & External Webcam - Adjusting for both?

I have a Microsoft LifeCam Cinema that I use when I'm at my desktop (external monitor). I find that the camera works great, but the video is squeezed into the frame. Is there any way to adjust the fit of the video in the frame?

(1) Because you are asking about a non-Apple item, your retailer or Microsoft may have the best answers for how to use their product with your System. If you do not get the answer you need here, try those sources.
(2) Your posted system info shows 13" MacBook Air (2010) Mac OS X (10.6.6) but you say you are using your LifeCam on an unidentified "desktop (external monitor)".
If you need to post back for clarification or more suggestions, please tell us what desktop, OS, and display you are using with your LifeCam. If you are using Windows® on a Mac, please tell us how you have installed it and what application exhibits the distortion.
Until then, I will offer some suggestions you can consider based on the assumption that you are using a Mac Desktop with Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later and are NOT using Windows®. If my assumption is wrong, stop now and post back the information requested above.
(3) In Mac OS, *software runs webcams*. Everything you need is included in 10.4.11 (or later) and the app being used. Some third party software can conflict with the Mac's software.
Therefore, *if you installed any software that came with your LifeCam*, my first suggestion is that you uninstall it now. Be sure to follow the instructions on how to uninstall. Do NOT merely drag something to the trash unless that is what MicroSoft's instructions direct.
Restart your Mac and test again after uninstalling to see if the problem is resolved.
(4) If your problem persists, search Help in the application you use with your Microsoft LifeCam Cinema to see if one of the topics helps you.
For instance, if your problem occurs when using iMovie, search Help for "aspect ratio" (without the quote marks.) You may only need to configure as explained in this article (also available in your Mac's iMovie Help):

  • Built-in iSight as webcam???

I have a 2.1 GHz G5 iMac (Pre-intel), w/ a built-in iSight and I am having issues using it as a webcam on various cam-chat sites. All the sites I am on say they support iSight, and friends that have External iSight's use them fine...anything I should know on how to turn the Built-in cam on? iChat and Yahoo Messenger recognize it. Oh..iMovie HD doesn't see it either.
    Thanks for any help!!
    Scott

I do not have a built-in iSight, but here are some ideas you can consider, Scott.
Video web sites may have unique requirements. The site FAQs, Help links, or Technical Support should give you the best answers for compatibility, configuration, and operating questions about these sites.
If the websites you are visiting use the Macromedia Flash plug-in for internet video support in your browser, you may need to configure your plug-in settings. A <control>Click on the video window may let you check your settings.
Have you tried the suggestions from your iMac's users manual? If you do not have it available with you, you might find help or useful info at the iMac G5 (iSight) User's Guide (Manual) link. (If you use Safari as your browser, you can <option>Click to download the manual.) The section on "Using the Built-In iSight..." begins on page 29, and the "TroubleShooting" section begins on page 53.
If an you explain what "having issues" means, perhaps some built-in iSight users can offer suggestions. Try to describe the problem more specifically. Are you getting a colored screen, no reaction, an error message, or some other problem?
Any built-in iSight users have suggestions for Scott... ?

  • Want to partition a new External Hard drive for both pc and mac

    Hello!
I am going to partition a new Seagate external hard drive for both my pc and mac.  What format do I choose for the PC partition?  MS-DOS (FAT), ExFAT, or Free Space.
    Thank you!
    Nikki

    If I may suggest:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting has completed select the main entry for the new drive (mfgr.'s ID) then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Click on the large partition rectangle then click on the Add [+] button. The partition should divide into two equal volumes. Resize as you prefer. Select the second or bottom volume to use on the PC. Set the format type to ExFat, then click on the Apply button. Wait for the two volumes to finish mounting on the Desktop.

  • Is there an external webcam made for the original iPad?

Is there an external webcam made for the original iPad?

There was an iClops project for awhile, but the folks abandoned the idea, I heard for possible legal reasons.
There is an app, Camera for iPad, that lets you use the iPhone's better resolution camera to take photos for other iOS devices. But it does not work with any video apps. I am not sure why I would take photos with an iPhone for the iPad, unless it was for later viwing on the larger display.

  • How to use built-in iSight & external Firewire iSight simultaneously?

The solutions I've found here and elsewhere, about launching iChat first so it "controls" the internal iSight and will force the firewire iSight to work, does not work. With Quicktime and Photo Booth, I stll get the feed from the internal camera.
iChat has a dropdown menu showing "Built-in iSight" and "iSight". But when "iSight" is selected, the message "Camera is off" appears.
What is the definitive method for using the built-in iSight and the firewire iSight simultaneously?  Thank you.

    Hi,
Several answer to the implied questions.
By Default iChat will choose the camera listed in the iChat menu > Preferences > Video section > camera drop down.
(If there is only one camera this drop down does not appear)
The External iSight may need it's iris opened if it is plugged in but you are being told it is Off.
However also you may benefit from ticking the check box about an External Camera at the bottom of the same pane.
    As for "Simultaneously" http://b-l-a-c-k-o-p.com/CamCamX.html
Other VJ type apps or that will do VJ type stuff are listed here under Movie Capture.

  • Isight External Firewire Drivers for Vista & Win7

I own an Isight EXTERNAL (firewire) and I need a driver that will work for it, Iv tried an XP driver i found online didnt work..
I need a driver for Win 7 or vista

    Welcome to Disccussions, rasprenkle
If you get no better help here, click here to see ->this Google Search for your topic.
My quick look did not find any drivers, but as stated in the first link that the search returned,
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISight#iSightonWindows
a working external (Firewire) iSight should be auto-detected, at least by Vista.
Although I no longer use Windoze, I have seen reports in Apple Discussions that Windows will recognize the Firewire iSight's camera. However, the microphone is different. I have never seen any verified report that Windows can connect to iSight's great microphone. While that may have changed in Vista or Win7, it seems to me that the only way to take full advantage of external iSight's full capability is to use it on a Firewire equipped Mac.
FWIW, while answering researching for this answer, I came across this blog that might be of interest:
      http://retiredblog.gkaindl.com/2007/10/11/using-an-external-isight-on-a-windows- notebook/
If all else fails, the simpler approach may be to buy a Windows-compatible USB webcam. They come in great variety of prices (and features.)

  • Can I use an External Hard Drive for both my Powerbook ad my PC?

I would like to purchase an external hard drive for safety reasons.
Can I store both information of my PC and my Powerbook on the same ext. hard drive? Probably a dumb question but I'd still like to know...
    Thanks in advance.
    Milli.

Any should do. Buy an external enclosure, purchase a bare drive of your choice, do your own installation. Takes 5 minutes. Save a little money. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • External hard drive for both windows and mac

hello, all - just bought a western digital 500gb my book premium edition external hard drive. will be using for both pc and macbook, not necessarily to share files (though i may on occasion), but rather as a backup. been researching the discussion boards and concluded that i should use it as pre-formatted fat32. few questions...
    1) if i do use to share files, from what i understand i will be able to read windows files with my mac but i can't read mac files with windows (unless i have macdrive installed). is this correct?
    2) since mac can read/write to fat 32, is it necessary to partition the drives and keep the files separated? i talked to a "computer guy" earlier today and he said i should consider having two completely separate external hard drives as having files from two different operating systems on the same drive could cause major problems for both... i didn't really believe him.
    3) i have seen different posts stating using fat32 format for mac limits file size to 4gb. another post said 32gb. which is right? i have os is 10.4.7 if that makes a difference.
thanks in advance for any insight.

2 - i don't mind partitioning at all. but he strongly suggested not even partitioning but using two completely separate hard drives. yeah, the 500gb was a bit overkill, so if i can use it for both as opposed to one and buying an additional, i'd rather.
2/3 - if i partition, is it best to divide it into ntfs and hfs+? or should i keep the pc portion fat32? if the mac portion is hfs+, can i store any size file? i have videos that are anywhere from 10-20gb, and i'd like to get them off my computer and into the external drive.
    thanks.

  • Getting player to recognize Mac Book Pro built-in iSight as webcam

Flash Player 10 in Firefox 3 will not recognize the MBP's
built-in iSight camera as a web cam. I'm trying to view the virtual
    hologram on this page:
    http://ge.ecomagination.com/smartgrid/#/augmented_reality
It's so cool! I'd hate to think that my fellow Mac Book Pro,
Mac Pro, and iMac users can't check this out for themselves.
    Any ideas?

Thanks punkin, but I tried that -- no go. I spent at least an
hour messing with it, so of course I started with the instructions
(followed by a call to my Mac IT buddy, then the Apple forums, but
it seemed to me to be a Flash issue, as the camera works
otherwise). It's as if the built-in is not recognized as a web
    cam.

  • How can I format external hard drive for both Mac

Hi, I want to use my Seagate external Hard Drive 1 TB on both Mac & Windows. I go to know that FAT 32 supports both but it can not transfer more than 4 GB data at a time. Is there some better alternative? Please suggest.

As said above Use exFAT but do the formatting on a Windows PC as I have had problems of Windows seeing the drive when done on a Mac. Once done on a PC it was seen by both platforms.
Also if you are running XP on the PC you may need an update for XP to see and use exFAT drives. It may be included with XP SP3, i'm not sure, but Microsoft has an update for both XP SP2 and SP3 so that exFAT drives are usable.

  • How can I use one external hard drive for both Time Machine and iPhoto Library?

I have been using a 1 TG LaCie external hard drive for Time Machine backups.  My (older) Mac has 160 GB and is almost full.  I would like to move my iPhoto Library to the external hard drive, but I've heard Time Machine doesn't share one space well.  Should I
    1.  create another partition (but will this erase what I've already saved) with Disk Utility?  *I am running Snow Leopard*
    2.  create another volume to use for iPhoto, and if so, should the two volumes be of equal size?
    3.  leave it with one partition and move the iPhoto Library to the same partition with Time Machine back ups?
I know I don't need the entire 1 TG for back up of 160 GBs.  Please advise the best path to take.  Thank you!

You are getting incorrect information from your ASP. If you look at drive specifications the heat generated is no different for high vs low capacity drives.
I have upgraded the internal drive in my iMac 2007 with a 3TB Hitachi drive without any heat issues or other problems.
Larger hard drives have higher density platters so to access any given amount data the drives travel a shorter distance. Higher capacity drives should therefore run cooler than lower density drives because the drive spends less time spinning to access data.

  • Airport Extreme with NTFS external HD solutions for both Mac and Windows

I recently bought an apple extreme when friends who have them say you can shared both printers and external harddrives really easily. However, it seems I am unable to share my many NTFS harddrives. I see after searching forums that it does not support NTFS but does FAT32.
One day I will convert all my home laptops to mac's but at the moment I am using XP and Vista for the time being so converting them to the apple format is not an option.
The problem i have is that if I convert them to FAT32 then I will only be be to have ISO's that are less than 2gig in size, an only be able to format up to 30 gig. If I have a 500 gig disk I'll be left with 470 gig of wasted space that cannot be used.
Can anyone suggest a good solution for me? perhaps someone has worked out how to format FAT32 greater than 30gb. or perhaps there is another disk format that would be better to use and can be read/write from XP/Vista PC as well as being recognised by Airport extreme. Any help would be good as I am reluctant to get a refund on it, but will have to if I can get it to work with large files/partitions.

I think I answered my own question. I found this on the web:
    http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
Seems to suggest that using this third party exe to format it instead of windows inbuilt one will allow for partitions greater than 32GB. So this looks the way to go. And the 2GB limit per file is just for FAT16 not FAT32 apparently, but even if it is I only have a few iso/video files bigger than 2 gig so will just use a splitter on them.
Hope this is useful to someone else

  • External hard drive for both 10.3.9 and 10.4.6

I need a 500 GB external hard drive that will work with both my iMac OS 10.3.9 and my MacBook Pro 10.4.6.
I'm looking at the Seagate FreeAgent Pro ST305004FPA1E3-RK -- which seems to fill the bill:
    - - - - -

Here's the full text of my question, including what went missing before!
I need a 500 GB external hard drive that will work with both my iMac OS 10.3.9 and my MacBook Pro 10.4.6.
I'm looking at the Seagate FreeAgent Pro ST305004FPA1E3-RK -- which seems to fill the bill:
    Interface USB 2.0 / eSATA / FireWire 400
    compatible with both O/S Mac
    * Power PC G3, G4, or G5 processor running OS X 10.3.9 (or higher), or
    * Intel Core Duo or Core Solo processor running OS X 10.4.6 (or higher)
I understand the disk has to be reformatted for Mac--no problem.
But the software? The User Guide for Mac says
"The FreeAgent Pro software and the Memeo LifeAgent software that powers the Backup & Restore are already loaded on your FreeAgent drive and ready to be installed on your computer."
But the screenshot for installing the software says: The FreeAgent Pro software and the Memeo LifeAgent software runs on Macs using OSX 10.4.8 and higher.
Will the drive still work with the iMac even if I can't install the FreeAgent Pro software and the Memeo LifeAgent software?
And what's the scoop with the MacBook Pro's Time Machine? If I use that software with the drive, will it make the drive unavailable for use with the iMac?
Thanks for any suggestions and help you can offer!

  • External hard drive for both a PPC and Intel Mac?

I have 2 LaCie Hard Drives (500GB & 750GB) that I'd like to use for backing up my 2 laptops and for storing photo and music files.
When I got the MacBook Pro, I partitioned the 500GB drive into 3 volumes and used SuperDuper! to make "bootable" copies of the MBP on one volume, theiBook on one volume, and put photo files on the third. I don't know/can't remember how I dealt with the directions below from Disk Utility and I fear I may have done the impossible or at least done the wrong thing.
"If you will use a volume as a Mac OS X startup disk, click Options and choose the appropriate partition scheme. To use a volume to start up an Intel-based Mac, choose the GUID partition scheme. To use a volume to start up a PowerPC-based Mac, choose the Apple partition scheme."
As I ask these questions, I find myself getting tongue-tied so please bear with me and read on...
#1 - Is it *even possible* to do what I want and have the bootable copies of both of these laptops on the same HD since one is PPC and the other Intel? If the answer if yes, it's OK then the rest of this is moot.
#2 - I can easily delete one or the other laptop backup from the 500 LaCie and put it on the virgin 750 and partiton it - problem is, is there a way to know how I partitioned the 500 HD so I won't have to redo it -I don't want to have to recopy the thousands of photo files already on the HD. If I knew how it was partitioned - Intel or PPC - I could just delete the appropriate laptop and move it to the other LaCie, assuming I have to.
#3 - And, is it possible to use a drive that has been partitioned for PPC or Intel with the other type computer - will I be able to access the jpg photo files from both the MBP and my G4 both of which are Tiger no matter which way the HD is partitioned? Now I as able to do this, but as I said, I don't remember which way I partitioned the HD - all I remember is that I did choose to include OS 9 drivers since I still use Classic and OS 9 on the G4. ( I have yet another LaCie that I use exclusively to back up my G4 and it is not part of this issue)
    Mrs H

So "To use a volume to start up a PowerPC-based Mac, choose the Apple partition scheme." really means it will work for my Intel MBP too?
    Yes.
Is there a way to tell if that is what I already choose?
Select the existing drive in the Disk Utility and find the Partition Map Scheme text at the bottom of the window.
